1 2 Nagpur: Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Monday informed the legislative council that the probe into the murder of Beed district's village sarpanch, Santosh Deshmukh, is being carried out with artificial intelligence (AI) to expedite information gathering, apart from traditional investigative methods. Replying to council leader of opposition (LoP) Ambadas Danve, the CM said police are not sheltering any accused and have also suspended a policeman. While there's no Question Hour or Calling Attention Motion in this winter session, Danve started the discussion under Rule 289 (SEE BOX). Danve said, "In Beed district on December 9, a village sarpanch, Santosh Deshmukh, was killed. Three accused were arrested, and later got bail. Photographs of the accused having tea with police officials went viral. This is dereliction of duty by police, who were supposed to act against the accused and here they are partying with them." Fadnavis said his department has acted against those cops. "The police inspector has been sent on forced leave and the in-charge sub-inspector has been suspended," said Fadnavis. The CM added latest technology is being used to track down the accused. "We are using AI and other technical tools to track sequence and involvement of accused. We want to assure people that no one will be spared. And if more cops are found guilty, we will act against them," said Fadnavis. Without taking names, Danve alleged that a minister from Beed district is said to be "close to one of the accused". "There are six accused in this case, of which three have been arrested. I have heard the trio is linked to a political party. Also, it's being said a minister from Beed is close to the accused Valmik Anna. People are saying that Valmik called not only one of the accused, but also police officers." Senior Shiv Sena (UBT) leader said "CM should answer whether Maharashtra is being ruled by law or by criminals." Fadnavis said the investigation is being carried out without prejudice. "I assure the LoP that we will take strict action against the accused irrespective of their political affiliations. I have already transferred the case to CID and directed them to form a SIT," said Fadnavis. The CM added that Danve should refrain from accusing any minister without evidence. That was the day, though, that the war finally became more than an abstraction for America. There already was full-blown fighting in Europe, with Germany and Italy vs. the Soviet Union (eventually) and Great Britain, and in Asia, with Japan vs. China. But for some — or many — U.S. citizens in 1939, 1940 and most of 1941, that probably seemed remote, such as when Russia invaded Ukraine in February, 2022, or when fighting continued to amp up in the Middle East this year. Ask yourself this question: Did Americans worry about Adolf Hitler, or Japanese Prime Minister Hideki Tojo, or both in 1941? Did Americans think their world could be rocked the way it was? They probably worried some. But I seriously doubt that many of them realized just how bad it would get. Those who lived through World War I might have seen the signs. But while that conflict, at that point known as the Great War, was brutally bloody, it wasn’t a world war in the ways of World War II, sprawling across Europe, Asia and Africa. The advance of the weaponry, along with the fanaticism of the Nazis and Japanese, made for hitherto unthinkable violence. And remember, 23 years had passed since the end of The Great War in 1918. Those years were filled with a deadly pandemic, the Roaring ‘20s, the stock market crash and then the Depression. That was a lot to take in/deal with, and it served to cloud the memory of war. It’s been nearly 80 years since the end of World War II. If you count 25 years as a generation, that’s three of them, and a fifth of another one. That’s a lot of time to forget, and a lot of differences to absorb. The Americans of 1945 didn’t have interstate highways, many still didn’t have indoor plumbing or even electricity, and a good many had left their farms for the first time to fight in the war or to work in the war industry. Think of all the changes since, so many that it’d take an entire newspaper, and probably even more, to name. Those who lived through World War II, or at least the ones who can remember much of it, are either dead or in their twilight years. While history doesn’t repeat itself, at least not exactly, it does have a tendency to demolish humanity’s hopes and dreams every so often. That happens when people forget the basics, such as the Golden Rule and the universal idea that killing other people is a craven crime, and put first their avarice. The fallout always has been devastating, dating back to the tens of millions killed in China’s Three Kingdoms War and even beyond. World War II was the deadliest of all, though. Hopefully humanity won’t have to learn this lesson again. But don’t count on it. Because remember: Even with much of the world engulfed in war in late 1941, only a handful of Americans saw the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor coming. It’s great to shop local. Online shopping is a necessity, I guess, because it’s just about impossible to find some things in West Virginia, and especially in the more rural parts of the Mountain State. But shopping in person is another chance to interact with people. That seems like something we ought to not want to give up, but maybe that’s just me seeing the world through yesterday’s glasses. There’s one other reason to shop local: It’s a lot easier to return something in person. And this is especially true when buying something large online. At least make sure that if you have to return that heavy, or bulky, online item, that return shipping will be paid, or at least most of it will be. Otherwise, that’s an expensive mistake. Finally, if you’re buying something that’s going to need maintenance, buy it from a small business owner who will provide it.

Colorado two-way star Travis Hunter plans to turn pro and prefers to continue a dual role, playing wide receiver and cornerback in the NFL. Hunter could be the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft and is the favorite for the Heisman Trophy. Speculation about his future quieted as he gained notoriety by the week this season. Field Level Media projects Hunter as a top-three pick in the draft, and he confirmed Thursday this will be his last season at the college level. "That's definitely for sure," Hunter said on a conference call with reporters. Hunter is consistently playing between 100 and 125 snaps per game for Colorado. He has three interceptions on defense with 74 receptions, 911 yards and nine touchdowns playing wideout for quarterback Shedeur Sanders. Also a projected early first-round pick, Sanders committed to play in the East-West Shrine Game in Dallas. The son of Colorado head coach and Hall of Fame cornerback Deion Sanders, Shedeur Sanders said Thursday he would cast a Heisman vote for Hunter. "If it's between me and him, I would want him to get it," Sanders said. "He does a lot of amazing things and things that haven't been done before. I'm not a selfish guy. I know what he's capable of, so I would rather him win." Hunter said he would invite his QB to New York if he's not named a Heisman finalist before they go about the business of finishing the season, possibly in the 12-team College Football Playoff. Shedeur Sanders said he's the best quarterback in the draft, and doesn't believe that's anything new. "I feel like I was the best quarterback in the last draft, too," said Shedeur Sanders. "Ever since I was draft eligible, I knew I'm the best quarterback. It's not up for me to prove myself to talking about why." Former teammates at Jackson State where Deion Sanders also coached, Hunter said he felt his draft stock began to rise only after critics moved past "the hate" for his coach. The start of a new year can bring a surge of motivation around setting new goals, including financial resolutions. One way to help those goals become reality, financial experts say, is to make them as specific as possible. Then, track your progress, while allowing flexibility for unexpected challenges. “It’s easier to track progress when we know where we are going,” says Sylvie Scowcroft, a certified financial planner and founder of The Financial Grove in Cambridge, Massachusetts. That’s why she encourages her clients to set clearly defined goals, often related to paying off a specific debt, saving a certain amount per month or improving their credit score. Here are more tips from financial experts about crafting 2025 financial goals : Trying to accomplish too much can feel overwhelming. Instead, pick your priorities, says Cathleen Tobin, CFP and owner of Moonbridge Financial Design in Rhinebeck, New York. She suggests focusing on those big, often emotionally-driven goals to find motivation. “It’s more compelling than just a number,” she says. For example, do you want to make sure you’re on track for retirement or save money for a house? “Start there.” Scowcroft says she sees clients get tripped up by selecting overly broad goals, such as “get better with money.” Instead, she encourages people to select specific action items, such as “sign up for a budgeting tool and set aside time each month to learn where my money is going.” That level of specificity provides direction so you know what steps to take next, she adds. For example, if your top priority is to become debt-free, then your specific goal might be to pay off an extra $200 of your debt balance each month. Tobin says labeling savings accounts so they correspond with goals can also help. An emergency fund could be named something like “Peace of mind in 2025,” so you remember why you’re saving every time you make a transfer. “It’s more motivating than just ‘emergency fund,’” Tobin says. Measuring your progress as the year unfolds is also a critical component of successful goal setting, Tobin says. She compares it to weight loss. If you want to lose 20 pounds by June, then you need to lose about a pound a week for the first six months of the year. Similarly, she says it helps to break savings goals into microsteps that specify what you need to do each week. Schedule a weekly or monthly check-in with yourself to make sure you are meeting those smaller goals along the way. You might want to review your debt payoff progress or check your credit score , for example. “Being able to break it down into steps that can be done each week or twice a month really helps,” Tobin says. If your goal is to save more money , then setting up an automatic transfer each month can help turn that goal into reality, as long as you know you have the money in your checking account to spare. “It reduces the mental load,” says Mike Hunsberger, CFP and owner of Next Mission Financial Planning in St. Charles, Missouri, where he primarily supports veterans and current members of the military. He recommends starting small to ease into the change. “I wouldn’t jump to double what you’re currently saving,” he says. For example, when it comes to saving in a retirement account, if you’re starting with a 3% contribution, you might want to bump it up to 4%, then slowly increase it from there. “My number one piece of advice is to start small, but make sure you scale over time,” Hunsberger adds. “Because it’s gradual, you probably won’t notice it impacting your lifestyle.” “Stay flexible,” Scowcroft says. “Part of it is just being kind to yourself and not being too rigid.” When unexpected challenges come up, such as a big unplanned expense, you might have to pause making progress on your goal and reset. You might even need to change your goal. Scowcroft says that doesn’t mean you “failed,” just that life changed your plans. Dwelling on any negativity won’t help your forward progress. Sharing your goals with a friend can also make it easier to reach them, Scowcroft says. “It really helps to have an accountability buddy,” she says. Georgescu, a former member of the right-wing populist Alliance for Uniting Romanians (AUR), left the party after senior officials criticized his views on Russia and NATO, the outlet separately reported . “I voted for the unjust, for the humiliated, for those who feel that they do not matter in this world and they are the ones that matter!” Georgescu said in a Facebook post after casting his ballot. “Today, the vote is a prayer for the nation.” Georgescu campaigned primarily on TikTok and leveraged the platform to propel him from political obscurity, according to EuroNews. He also holds a doctorate in soil science and represented Romania on the national committee of the United Nations Environment Program from 1999 to 2012. His runoff opponent, Lasconi, advocates for continued Ukrainian support and increased defense spending. If elected, she would become Romania’s first female president. Georgescu has called for halting aid to Ukraine, according to France 24.
