Western Digital CEO David Goeckeler Elected Chair of Semiconductor Industry AssociationAsian Games 4x400m relay gold-winning quarter-miler VK Vismaya, who was provisionally suspended earlier this year after returning positive for a banned substance, has vowed to clear her name from the doping charges. Vismaya, who was a part of the Indian women’s quartet that won gold in the 4x400m relay in the Jakarta Asian Games, also claimed that she had submitted Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE) during the dope sample collection, which, if proven, may help her in her case. The 27-year-old Vismaya’s urine sample was collected at her home in Perumbavur, near Kochi, in an out-of-competition test on August 15 and the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) informed the athlete in September that her urine sample contained Clomiphene which comes under the hormone and metabolic modulators category which is prohibited at all times. Clomiphene is a non-steroidal medication used clinically to induce ovulation in women, and Vismaya said she had taken it as a fertility drug. “I want to clarify that I was prescribed this medication by my doctor for a legitimate medical purpose -- pregnancy treatment. It had absolutely nothing to do with performance,” Vismaya wrote on her social media handle. “Clomifene is in a class of medications called ovulatory stimulant. It works by helping your body produce an egg ( ovulation), which increase the chances of pregnancy,” she said. “I fully disclosed all medications I was taking on the doping control form. I’ve submitted all required documents, TUE, medical records, and proofs to concerned authority demonstrating the legitimate medical purpose of my treatment,” said Vismaya. The bone of contention could be whether she had applied for the TUE before the dope test or not. ALSO READ | Paris Olympics: Anti-war protestor gets 8,000-euro fine for attempt to disrupt men’s 100m final Vismaya said throughout her athletics career she had “never taken shortcuts or compromised my values to enhance my performance.” “... 11 years into my career, I’m faced with a challenge that undermines everything I’ve worked for. The recent doping allegations have cast a shadow on my hard-earned achievements, and I’m determined to clear my name. As a professional athlete, I’ve always upheld the values of fair play and integrity,” she said. “I trust myself and my integrity. I did nothing wrong, and I will not let these allegations define me. I will stand tall, fight for my truth, and emerge stronger,” she added. Visamaya was also a member of the teams that clinched silver medals in both the women’s 4x400m relay and the mixed 4x400m relay at the 2019 Asian Athletics Championships. She said from 2019 onwards, she was part of NADA’s Registered Testing Pool and she cooperated fully with the testing procedures. “During all this time, I provided numerous samples, both in-competition and out-of-competition and none of them showed any presence of banned substances. I have always been committed to clean sports,” she said. On June 27, Vismaya participated in the National Inter-State Athletics Championships but she could not complete her race due to a soleus muscle (that runs along the back side of her lower leg) injury. This was her last competition before her urine sample was collected on August 15. “As an athlete and an individual, I want to emphasize that pregnancy is not a disease or a mistake. It’s a deliberate choice ... I expect the same respect and consideration from everyone for my personal choices and decisions,” Vismaya said. “... I’m currently pregnant and navigating the emotional ups and downs that come with it. Being pregnant and dealing with these allegations simultaneously has been a significant emotional challenge,” she added. Vismaya’s case will now be heard by the NADA’s Anti-Doping Disciplinary Panel (ADDP). If proven guilty, she will face a maximum ban of four years. NonePresident Jimmy Carter may have only had one term in the White House, but he remained a familiar figure on the world stage long after clearing his desk at the Oval Office. Despite a resounding defeat at the hands of Ronald Reagan in 1980, the Democrat forged a new path promoting causes such as electoral probity abroad, social justice and drives to rid the world of medical conditions. His first foreign visit as president was to the UK where then prime minister James Callaghan, as well as the usual visits in London, took his guest to the North East with a visit to Newcastle, Sunderland and Washington – the village bearing the name of the first ever president. Mr Carter delighted crowds in the North East by saying “Howay the lads” during a speech to the assembled throng. He also received a miner’s lamp from 12-year-old Ian McEree in Washington. The 39th US president also carried out more traditional presidential duties, including meetings with western European leaders during his time in London while the Cold War was still ongoing. The practising Baptist continued his globetrotting ways after leaving power, even without Air Force One as his vehicle. He was also part of the Elders, a group of experienced statesmen and women drawn from all corners of the world. The youth-led political party deemed such remarks by Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS) as more than just an act of disagreement, as they were also seen as direct attacks on the essence of Malaysia’s identity as a harmonious, multi-racial and multi-religious nation. “Ours is a country founded on mutual respect and understanding, where the diversity of our people is not a weakness but a profound strength,” said Muda in a statement yesterday. “To question the celebration of Christmas or any other cultural or religious festivity is to undermine the values that have held Malaysians together for decades. “It is an attempt to sow division and distrust, and it risks eroding the delicate social fabric that binds us as Malaysians. “Festivals like Christmas, Hari Raya, Deepavali and Chinese New Year are not merely traditions, but are opportunities to build bridges between communities. “They remind us of our shared humanity and create a sense of belonging for all Malaysians, regardless of race or religion, and those who criticise such celebrations fail to see the bigger picture.” Muda further pointed out that inclusivity was ‘not a luxury, but a necessity in a diverse nation like Malaysia’. “Rejecting these moments of shared joy is not only divisive, but also a betrayal of the ideals upon which Malaysia was built. “For leaders who question these celebrations, one must ask what kind of Malaysia that they envision. “A nation fractured by distrust and suspicion? How can leaders who dismiss acts of inclusivity claim to represent the interests of a multiracial country?” it argued, adding that such rhetoric risks would only create divisions and harm the future of our nation. “Let us be clear. Rhetoric that pits Malaysians against each other based on race or religion has no place in our society. Muda stressed that it was high time for Malaysians to stand against such divisive narratives by rejecting any attempt to stoke fear or hatred in the name of politics. It said Malaysians must look beyond the narrow politics of division and work toward a Malaysia that celebrates its people in all their diversity. “This is not just about Christmas; it is about the Malaysia we want to build – a nation where unity triumphs over division, where respect is the norm, not the exception. “Let us remind ourselves that Malaysia’s true strength lies in its ability to embrace all its people, not just some. “This is the vision we must defend, and this is the Malaysia we must fight for,” it added.

He transformed the economy of the Indian Union to the point where it can be described as a before and after of Manmohan Singh's era. A scholar of the three Tamil languages, he is worthy of affection and respect. He pioneered rural economic development through many creative projects, including the Hundred Days Program. Mr. Manmohan Singh achieved a lot during his 10 years as Prime Minister. During his tenure, Tamil Nadu received many projects and made considerable development. The passing of Manmohan Singh, who correctly understood the direction of the global economy and formulated India's economic policies, is a significant loss for the country. My deepest condolences on his passing. I extend my condolences to the Congress party workers, family, and friends who are grieving his loss.” Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also shared a social media post on the former PM’s demise. Manmohan Singh, the former Prime Minister of India , has died at the age of 92 due to health issues associated with aging, as reported by AIIMS. He held the position of Prime Minister for two consecutive terms, from 2004 to 2014. Singh first ascended to the role following the Congress party's victory in the Lok Sabha elections, defeating the National Democratic Alliance led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee. His leadership continued into a second term, spanning from 2009 until 2014, when he was succeeded by Narendra Modi.Foot traffic at retailers soared on Dec. 21, the Saturday before Christmas. Here's a look at the potential winners from the last week of holiday shopping. What Happened: Foot traffic at retailers was up an average of 58% compared to daily averages in 2024, a trend that could see retail stocks benefit for the 2024 holiday shopping season. The 58% gain to the daily average, reported by Placer.ai, is higher than the 51.1% gain over the daily average seen on Black Friday. Sunday, Dec. 22, also saw retail foot traffic up 38.2% to the daily average. While foot traffic was up compared to the daily average for the year, the 58% gain was smaller than last year's Super Saturday, which saw a 74.4% increase from the daily average. The caveat with last year's data is that Super Saturday was Dec. 23, one of the last remaining shopping days before Christmas. Among the potential biggest winners for this year's Christmas shopping season could be department stores, based on the report. Overall foot traffic to department stores was up 128.7% compared to the Saturday 2024 daily average, surpassing last year’s 119.4% increase over the 2023 Saturday average. Among the department stores tracked by Placer.ai, these were the year-over-year visit growth: Nordstrom JWN : +8.8% Bloomingdale's , a unit of Macy's M : +4.7% JCPenney : +1.3% The report also found that recreational and sporting goods stores, beauty and self-care stores and other specialty categories saw strong traffic gains. Here's a look at some of the retailers tracked and the foot traffic gains on a year-over-year basis to last year's Super Saturday: Ollie's Bargain Outlet OLLI : +7.3% T.J. Maxx , a unit of TJX Companies TJX : +4.6% Five Below FIVE : +4.2% The report found that superstores, grocery stores, and discount retailers saw lower year-over-year growth due to last year's timing of Super Saturday being so close to Christmas. Indoor shopping malls like those owned by Simon Property Group SPG may have also benefitted from Super Saturday. Placer.ai data shows that foot traffic to indoor malls was up 177.1% on Super Saturday compared to the 2024 daily average. Read Also: If You Gifted Your Family $100 In Bitcoin, Dogecoin And Ethereum Last Christmas, Here’s How Much They Would Have This Christmas Why It's Important: Ahead of Super Saturday, the National Retail Foundation estimated that 157.2 million consumers would shop on the shopping holiday based on an annual survey. The figure comes in higher than the 141.9 million Super Saturday shoppers in 2024 and is the second highest figure over the last nine years, trailing only 158.5 million in 2022. "Super Saturday is one of the last opportunities during the holiday season for consumers to get the remaining items on their shopping list," NRF Vice President of Industry and Consumer Insights Katherine Cullen said. Cullen cited the shortened holiday shopping season, due to Thanksgiving falling late in November, boosting the odds of last-minute shoppers. The survey found that 69.5 million people plan to shop both in-store and online, up from 58.3 million in 2023. The amount of people exclusively shopping in-store was down in the survey from 37% to 31%, while the percentage of people who said they would shop exclusively online increased from 22% to 24%. Similar to the results above, the NRF survey highlighted department stores as potential winners on Super Saturday, with 37% of shoppers saying they planned to finish their holiday shopping there. Finishing shopping online was the most popular response at 49%, with discount stores named by 27% of consumers and clothing and accessory stores named by 25% of consumers. The NRF survey found the most popular gift purchases were clothing and accessories (50%), toys (32%), gift cards (26%) and books, video games and other media (24%). The shortened holiday shopping season could have been good for retailers with more foot traffic each day and especially on the weekends. The key will be if the daily increase is enough to offset the lower number of total shopping days between Thanksgiving and Christmas. The post-Christmas shopping time could also see a boost, with 71% of consumers in the survey saying they planned to shop after Christmas, similar to last year's survey. NRF estimates that the entire holiday shopping season of Nov. 1 through Dec. 31 is expected to be up 2.5% to 3% from 2024, hitting a record range of $979.5 billion to $989 billion. Easter Sunday is four months away, falling on April 20 in 2025 but some supermarkets already have seasonal stock out on their shelves. Chocolate eggs and hot cross buns have already been spotted for sale in shops including Morrisons, Tesco and Asda. As reported by Sky News , Gary Evans, 66, from Margate, shared a picture of Creme Eggs on display at his local Morrisons on Boxing Day. "I just think it's crazy that everything is so superficial and meaninglessly commercial... [there's] something quite frantic about it," he said. Meanwhile, Joseph Robinson, saw themed Kit-Kat and Kinder Surprise products at his local Morrisons in Stoke-on-Trent on Friday evening (December 27). He said: "It's funny as they've not even managed to shift the Christmas chocolates off the shelves yet and they're already stocking for Easter. "I wish that supermarkets weren't so blatantly consumerist-driven and would actually allow customers and staff a time to decompress during the Christmas period." Jesus hasn’t even been born yet". Another added: "I’m a very liberal person but seeing Morrisons selling #Easter eggs right after #Christmas is where I draw the line". In an alternative view, marketing consultant Andrew Wallis, 54, admitted he was surprised to see Easter eggs in the Co-op in Kilgetty, Pembrokeshire. However, he added it also illustrates "forward-thinking" from big businesses. Recommended reading: He explained: "It made me reflect on how big brands are always thinking ahead and planning early. "My message to retailers would be: while planning ahead is important, it's also essential to be mindful of consumer sentiment. "Some might feel it's too early for seasonal products like this but others might see it as a sign of forward-thinking. Striking the right balance is key to keeping customers happy."

Manmohan Singh passes away at 92: Chiranjeevi, Mammootty, and Udhayanidhi Stalin share deep condolencesBy Marshall Cohen , CNN Smartmatic, the voting technology company suing Fox News over its promotion of 2020 election lies, is trying to obtain evidence from the secret court battle between Rupert Murdoch and his children over the future of his right-wing media empire. For the first time, Smartmatic has gone directly to the probate court in Nevada and asked a commissioner to turn over some of the secret documents in that case, a source told CNN. The voting technology company wants to examine sealed documents from the family fight that it thinks will bolster its defamation lawsuit against Fox, according to a source familiar with recent filings in the Murdoch trust case. The source said these documents could include transcripts of depositions or trial testimony from media mogul Rupert Murdoch and his and family members, who control Fox's parent company After Donald Trump lost the 2020 election, many of Fox News' on-air hosts and guests falsely accused Smartmatic of rigging the results to help elect Joe Biden. Those lies are at the heart of Smartmatic's massive defamation suit against Fox News and its parent company, Fox Corporation. The Fox entities vehemently deny that they defamed anyone. The Murdoch family has battled over succession in compete secrecy in a Reno court. Earlier this month, a probate commissioner rejected an attempt by Murdoch, 93, to retool the irrevocable family trust so his most conservative son, Lachlan, could singularly lead Fox Corporation after his death, instead of sharing power with his three siblings as planned. The source said Smartmatic's filings say testimony from the Nevada case might contradict past assertions in the 2020 election litigation, where Fox claimed control of the parent company doesn't impact the editorial direction of Fox News. In the Nevada case, Rupert has argued that Lachlan must succeed him in order to maintain his outlet's right-wing political bent. On the public docket in Nevada, there are indications that an outside party filed a motion last week. The records are sealed and CNN has not obtained Smartmatic's filing. A Fox spokesperson and attorneys for the Murdochs did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Lawyers for Fox previously said in Smartmatic's election defamation case that they oppose disseminating the records from the family trust fight. "That litigation is entirely irrelevant to this case," Fox lawyer Winn Allen told a judge during a hearing last month. "That is litigation pending in a Nevada probate court, and concerns changes that Mr. Murdoch made to the family trust in 2023, years after the alleged conduct in this case... It has nothing at all to do with the issues in this case." CNN previously reported that the Nevada probate commissioner eviscerated Rupert and Lachlan for acting in "bad faith" to manipulate the family trust, rejecting their bid to amend the family trust. They can appeal the decision. That ruling was sealed. The New York Times, which obtained the full 96-page ruling, reported that the commissioner further concluded Rupert's proposal was a "carefully crafted charade" and that his representatives "demonstrated a dishonesty of purpose and motive." Smartmatic's defamation case against Fox is slated for trial next year in New York, unless there is an out-of-court settlement, which is common in these cases. Smartmatic is also trying to obtain the Nevada records through the discovery phase of the New York litigation. The lawsuit is just one of many 2020-related cases that are still pending in the courts. Smartmatic is suing Trump allies Mike Lindell and Sidney Powell. The company has settled similar litigation against conservative network Newsmax and the far-right channel One America News. A separate but similarly aggrieved voting technology company, Dominion Voting Systems, famously settled with Fox for more than US$787 million after jury selection began in that defamation trial last year. Dominion is still suing Newsmax, OAN and other Trump allies. All of the media outlets and Trump allies facing lawsuits deny wrongdoing. - CNNVisiting places such as Manassas provides an opportunity to relate to our past and reflect on our common heritage,. writer Jacob Lane argues in a guest column. In a major blow to the CPI-M, Bipin C Babu, a prominent leader and former Vice President of the Alappuzha District Panchayat, formally joined the BJP on Saturday. Bipin, who previously served as a CPI-M Alappuzha Area Committee member and represented the Krishnapuram division in the district panchayat, received his BJP membership from the party’s National General Secretary, Tarun Chugh. A host of senior BJP leaders welcomed him during a leadership meeting in Thiruvananthapuram. Advertisement Over his political career, Bipin has held several key positions, including District Secretary of the SFI, DYFI District President, State Committee Member, and Kerala University Senate Member. Speaking to the media, Bipin criticized the CPI-M for allegedly losing its secular values and falling under the control of communal forces. He also hinted that more CPI-M members might follow him into the BJP. Bipin denied any personal ambitions behind his decision and announced plans to resign from his district panchayat role. Bipin expressed disappointment over the treatment of senior CPI-M leader G Sudhakaran, saying it was a significant factor in his decision to leave the party. “The sidelining of G Sudhakaran, one of the country’s foremost social activists and among the best ministers Kerala has seen, is deeply disheartening,” he said. Lauding Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, Bipin remarked, “In the last ten years, Modiji’s government has executed projects that have genuinely benefited common people. The National Highway project in Kerala is just one example. This convinced me to join the BJP.” However, controversy surrounds Bipin’s personal life. Allegations of domestic violence and witchcraft practices emerged, with reports of his wife seeking medical treatment after claiming physical abuse. The BJP, which has faced recent setbacks in Kerala, including Sandeep Warrier’s defection to the Congress and the loss in Palakkad, welcomed Bipin’s entry as a morale booster. BJP State President K Surendran expressed optimism, stating that more CPI-M leaders from Alappuzha are expected to join the party soon. Taking a swipe at former BJP leader Sandeep Warrier, Surendran remarked, “Sometimes, sewage must be removed to ensure clean water flows again.” Meanwhile, CPI-M leader G Sudhakaran was conspicuously excluded from the party’s Ambalapuzha area conference, held just a kilometer from his residence. Sudhakaran, currently a special invitee to the CPI-M district committee, has yet to comment on the developments. Advertisement
