How Is The Market Feeling About Western Union?
Jim Montgomery was hired as coach of the NHL's St. Louis Blues on Sunday, five days after being fired as coach of the Boston Bruins. The 55-year-old Canadian, who guided Boston to an NHL record for wins and points in a season but never got past the second round of the playoffs, replaced Drew Bannister, who was fired after a 9-12-1 start by the Blues this season. An 8-9-3 start this season by the Bruins led to Montgomery's firing, but he signed a five-year contract with the Blues. "This was more an opportunity to get someone of Jim's caliber more than anything else," Blues president of hockey operations Doug Armstrong said. "We've had to deal with our situations off the ice with injuries and everyone deals with that, but this decision was based 100% on having someone of Jim's caliber becoming available when I didn't know that was going to happen." Montgomery is 180-84-33 as an NHL coach, having guided Dallas for two seasons and Boston for just over two campaigns, going 120-41-23 with the Bruins. In the 2022-23 season, the Bruins won an NHL record 65 games and compiled a record 135 points under Montgomery, who was named the NHL's Coach of the Year, but were upset by Florida in the first round of the playoffs. Boston also lost to the eventual 2024 Stanley Cup champions in last year's playoffs. Montgomery was dropped by the Bruins last Tuesday and replaced by Joe Sacco. "He certainly has a very positive demeanour, works well with the top players in the organizations that he's been with," Armstrong said. "He has a wealth of experience and he's at the prime of his coaching career." The Blues, who won the 2019 Stanley Cup, have missed the playoffs the past two seasons. Bannister went 39-31-6 as the Blues coach after replacing Craig Berube last December. Montgomery gets his first test with the Blues on Monday when they visit the New York Rangers. js/sevNone
ATLANTA — Politics dominated 2024 in Georgia, a presidential election year that saw former President Donald Trump turn the tables on Democrats in the Peach State. But Republican Trump's victory four years after President Joe Biden became the first Democrat to capture Georgia's 16 electoral votes since 1992 was far from the only political news to reverberate under the Gold Dome. Two high-profile crimes that occurred this year in Georgia - the murder of nursing student Laken Riley at the University of Georgia and a mass shooting that killed four at a Barrow County high school - drove state lawmakers' agendas. Here's a look at the top Georgia stories of 2024: Feb. 23: Nursing student Laken Riley is murdered while jogging on the University of Georgia campus in Athens. Jose Ibarra, an illegal immigrant from Venezuela, is convicted in the killing. In the wake of the murder, majority Republicans in the General Assembly pass legislation cracking down on illegal immigration, largely along party lines. March 20: The Legislature's Republican majorities pass a private-school vouchers bill after years of failed efforts. The measure provides up to $6,500 in annual funding to students who reside in a public school attendance zone that is in the lowest-performing 25% of all public schools in the state and wish to transfer to a private school. April 29: After years of delays and cost overruns, the nuclear expansion at Georgia Power's Plant Vogtle goes into full commercial operation with the completion of the second of two new nuclear reactors. June 27: President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump take part in a nationally televised debate in Atlanta. Biden's halting performance leads Democrats to replace him on the ticket with Vice President Kamala Harris. July 12: Former Georgia Insurance Commissioner John Oxendine is sentenced to three and a half years in prison for conspiracy to commit health-care fraud in connection with unnecessary lab testing. In a guilty plea, Oxendine admits that his insurance consulting business ordered the tests from a lab company in Texas in return for hundreds of thousands of dollars in kickbacks. Sept. 4: A teenage gunman is arrested and charged with shooting two teachers and two students to death at Apalachee High School in Barrow County. Colt Gray's father Colin is charged with giving his son access to the murder weapon, prompting Georgia lawmakers to call for legislation incentivizing gun owners to safely store their firearms. Sept. 27: Hurricane Helene tears a path through South Georgia north through the Augusta area, killing 34 Georgians and causing heavy rainfall and widespread flooding as well as extensive power outages. Oct. 19: A gangway on Sapelo Island collapses under the weight of passengers waiting to take a state-operated ferry to the mainland following the annual Sapelo Cultural Day celebration, killing seven people. Nov. 5: Republican Donald Trump carries Georgia by more than 115,000 votes over Democrat Kamala Harris on his way to winning the 2024 presidential election. Nov. 24: Georgia Commissioner of Labor Bruce Thompson dies at age 59, eight months after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

A passenger aboard a domestic Volaris flight on Sunday morning attempted to hijack and forcibly divert the aircraft to the United States, prompting an emergency landing in Guadalajara and the man’s subsequent arrest. The individual — a 31-year-old Mexican national identified as Mario “N” — was traveling from Leon, Guanajuato, to Tijuana, Baja California, with his wife and two children when the incident unfolded. According to authorities, Mario assaulted a flight attendant and attempted to breach the cockpit, citing a recent kidnapping of a close relative and a death threat as motivations for his actions. Crew members and at least one passenger subdued the suspect while the pilot issued an alert code and diverted the Airbus A320 to Guadalajara International Airport. Authorities, including the National Guard (GN), arrested Mario upon landing and transferred him to the Federal Public Ministry (MPF) for further investigation. His legal status will be determined by the Attorney General’s Office (FGR). “The crew subdued the aggressor in accordance with established security protocols,” Volaris said in a statement. At the Guadalajara airport, “GN personnel were already waiting for him.” The passengers and crew later continued on to Tijuana. “All passengers, crew and the aircraft are safe,” read a Volaris statement that was posted to the social media site X . Volaris also announced it had formally filed a complaint to ensure the suspect faces legal consequences. According to the authorities, the suspect said that upon taking off from León, he received a message that threatened either his own life or his kidnapped relative’s life — it’s not quite clear — if Mario traveled to Tijuana. According to witness reports, Mario grabbed a flight attendant, threatened her with a pen against her neck, and grabbed the handle to the plane’s door, saying he would jump to his death and take the flight attendant with him. Another passenger reportedly played a pivotal role in defusing the situation by persuading Mario to release the flight attendant and surrender peacefully. This person said no security personnel were present, and that it was he, with the help of other passengers, who managed to contain the attack. One witness said the man managed to get the plane door cracked open as passengers could be heard screaming, crying and pleading with him not to open it. Videos of the incident appear to confirm that account. Another witness said the suspect initially told passengers that he wanted to attract attention because his wife had been kidnapped and was seeking political asylum in the United States. Authorities noted that the state of Guanajuato, the flight’s departure point, is a region heavily affected by cartel violence , including extortion and kidnapping. It remains unclear if the threats Mario said he had received were connected to organized crime. With reports from Milenio , AP, KABC-TV , Infobae, The Guardian and Fox 5 San DiegoOpposition fighters are closing in on Syria’s capita l in a swiftly developing crisis that has taken much of the world by surprise. Syria's army has abandoned key cities with little resistance. Nervous residents in Damascus describe security forces on the streets. The state news agency has been forced to deny rumors that President Bashar Assad has left the country. Who are these opposition fighters? If they enter Damascus after taking some of Syria’s largest cities , what then? Here’s a look at the stunning reversal of fortune for Assad and his government in just the past 10 days, and what might lie ahead as Syria’s 13-year civil war reignites. > Watch NBC Bay Area News 📺 Streaming free 24/7 The aim? Overthrow the government This is the first time that opposition forces have reached the outskirts of the Syrian capital since 2018, when the country’s troops recaptured the area following a yearslong siege. The approaching fighters are led by the most powerful insurgent group in Syria, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, or HTS, along with an umbrella group of Turkish-backed Syrian militias called the Syrian National Army. Both have been entrenched in the northwest. They launched the shock offensive on Nov. 27 with gunmen capturing Aleppo, Syria’s largest city, and the central city of Hama, the fourth largest. The HTS has its origins in al-Qaida and is considered a terrorist organization by the U.S. and the United Nations. But the group said in recent years it cut ties with al-Qaida, and experts say HTS has sought to remake itself in recent years by focusing on promoting civilian government in their territory as well as military action. HTS leader Abu Mohammed al-Golani told CNN in an exclusive interview Thursday from Syria that the aim of the offensive is to overthrow Assad’s government. Possible rifts ahead The HTS and Syrian National Army have been allies at times and rivals at times, and their aims might diverge. The Turkish-backed militias also have an interest in creating a buffer zone near the Turkish border to keep away Kurdish militants at odds with Ankara. Turkey has been a main backer of the fighters seeking to overthrow Assad but more recently has urged reconciliation, and Turkish officials have strongly rejected claims of any involvement in the current offensive. Whether the HTS and the Syrian National Army will work together if they succeed in overthrowing Assad or turn on each other again is a major question. Others take advantage While the flash offensive against Syria’s government began in the north, armed opposition groups have also mobilized elsewhere. The southern areas of Sweida and Daraa have both been taken locally. Sweida is the heartland of Syria’s Druze religious minority and had been the site of regular anti-government protests even after Assad seemingly consolidated his control over the area. Daraa is a Sunni Muslim area that was widely seen as the cradle of the uprising against Assad’s rule that erupted in 2011. Daraa was recaptured by Syrian government troops in 2018, but rebels remained in some areas. In recent years, Daraa was in a state of uneasy quiet under a Russian-mediated ceasefire deal. And much of Syria's east is controlled by the Syrian Democratic Forces, a Kurdish-led group backed by the United States that in the past has clashed with most other armed groups in the country. Syria's government now has control of only three of 14 provincial capitals: Damascus, Latakia and Tartus. What’s next? Much depends on Assad’s next moves and his forces' will to fight the rebels. A commander with the insurgents, Hassan Abdul-Ghani, posted on the Telegram messaging app that opposition forces have started carrying out the “final stage” of their offensive by encircling Damascus. And Syrian troops withdrew Saturday from much of the central city of Homs, Syria's third largest, according to a pro-government outlet and the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. If that city is captured, the link would be cut between Damascus, Assad’s seat of power, and the coastal region where he enjoys wide support. “Homs to the coastal cities will be a very huge red line politically and socially. Politically, if this line is crossed, then we are talking about the end of the entire Syria, the one that we knew in the past,” said a Damascus resident, Anas Joudeh. Assad appears to be largely on his own as allies Russia and Iran are distracted by other conflicts and the Lebanon-based Hezbollah has been weakened by its war with Israel, now under a fragile ceasefire. The U.N. special envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, seeks urgent talks in Geneva to ensure an “orderly political transition,” saying the situation is changing by the minute. He met with foreign ministers and senior diplomats from eight key countries including Saudi Arabia, Russia, Egypt, Turkey and Iran on the sidelines of the Doha Summit. President-elect Donald Trump in his first extensive comments on the developments in Syria said the besieged Assad didn’t deserve U.S. support to stay in power. “THIS IS NOT OUR FIGHT,” Trump posted on social media. ___ Associated Press writer Abby Sewell in Beirut contributed.

Robert Redfield, former director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ( CDC ), said during a Saturday appearance on Fox & Friends Weekend that "it's possible" the United States' intelligence apparatus was involved in creating viruses in China in reference to a recent report on the government's investigation into the origins of COVID-19. Newsweek has reached out to the CDC's press team and the White House for comment via email on Saturday. Why It Matters A recent Wall Street Journal investigation reported that three scientists affiliated with the Pentagon conducted a scientific study finding that "Covid-19 was manipulated in a laboratory in a risky research effort," but that information was not incorporated in a report to President Joe Biden , as it was "at odds with the assessment of their parent agency, the Defense Intelligence Agency." The Wednesday report also said that early on the Federal Bureau of Investigation ( FBI ) was the "only agency that concluded a lab leak was likely," but the agency was not present at the presidential briefing. The report has resurrected theories that the coronavirus was leaked from a lab in Wuhan, China, and that the U.S. may have been involved or had prior knowledge of it, potentially covering it up. The origins of the deadly virus are still contested and politically divisive. What To Know Five years ago, the first cases of the virus were identified in Wuhan. Since then, more than 1.2 million Americans died from COVID-19, according to the CDC, with millions more globally. It is estimated that thousands of people are experiencing "long-COVID," with symptoms affecting the neurological, respiratory, cardiovascular, and psychological systems, among others, persisting for months after the initial infection. The government's handling of the virus, including vaccinations, mask mandates, and its origin, has sparked controversy among many Americans, and forged deep political divides. On Saturday, Fox & Friends Weekend co-host Will Cain spoke with Redfield about the origins of the virus in light of the Journal's report. Redfield served as CDC director during President-elect Donald Trump 's first term, from 2018 to 2021, overseeing the agency during the initial phase of the pandemic. Referring to the Journal 's report, Cain asked Redfield why he believes intelligence that the virus likely started in a lab was prevented from reaching the president. Redfield replied, "There clearly was a proactive decision by individuals to really only present one scenario for the origin of COVID—which is the natural spillover. I will say, there really is no evidence of spillover whatsoever." He added: "Clearly the intelligence agency has been duplicitous in this cover up of the true origins of COVID." Later in the segment, Redfield said, "It's most likely that our intelligence agency had assets that were deployed inside that [Wuhan] laboratory and in fact as a consequence didn't want too much scrutiny into the laboratory." Cain then asked Redfield: "Is it possible—should we consider the fact that the intelligence apparatus was also helping to create these types of viruses, where it's illegal in the United States, but actually helping to facilitate it for their own use, but using it on some foreign land in China to do it?" Redfield replied "Yeah, I think it's possible, Will. I think it really is." The former CDC director has previously been skeptical of the virus' origin. In November, he said on the Third Opinion podcast that there's a " real possibility " it was developed as a "biodefense program" in a lab at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He noted that he does not have any definitive proof to support this claim. What People Are Saying Representative Brad Wenstrup, an Ohio Republican who chairs the Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic, wrote opening page of the report: "The possibility that COVID-19 emerged because of a laboratory or research related accident is not a conspiracy theory." Mario Nawfal, internet personality with over 1.8 million followers, wrote in an X post on Friday, "Defense and FBI scientists uncovered damning evidence pointing to a Wuhan lab leak—but spy chiefs allegedly blocked them from briefing Biden. Instead, the 2021 report claimed a natural origin. Key findings were ignored, including Chinese military ties to early vaccine patents and lab techniques that leave no trace... Who's still covering for what?" What Happens Next Trump will take office in less than three weeks with a new administration. The Central Intelligence Agency ( CIA ), which Redfield implied on Saturday may have knowledge about viruses in the lab and sought to "protect its assets" in the field, is likely to be led by John Ratcliffe. "I think the truth will come out, I'm very excited about John Ratcliffe being the new CIA director," Redfield said, adding that "he will get all of these agencies back in the room and to look at the data."
