Off the couch and into the fireMOSCOW (AP) — Russian police raided several bars and nightclubs across Moscow on Saturday as part of the government’s crackdown on “LGBTQ+ propaganda,” state media reported. Smartphones, laptops and video cameras were seized, while clubgoers had their documents inspected by officers, Russia’s Tass news agency said, citing sources in law enforcement. The raids come exactly a year since Russia’s Supreme Court ruled that the “LGBTQ+ movement” should be banned as an “extremist organization." Its decision followed a decades-long crackdown on LGBTQ+ rights in Russia, where President Vladimir Putin has touted “traditional family values” as a cornerstone of his quarter-century in power. Footage shared on social media appeared to show partygoers being ordered by police to lie on the floor as officers moved through Moscow’s Arma nightclub. The capital’s Mono bar was also targeted, Russian media reported. In a post on Telegram on Saturday, the club’s management didn't directly reference an incident with law enforcement, but wrote, “Friends, we’re so sorry that what happened, happened. They didn’t find anything forbidden. We live in such times, but life must go on.” Police also detained the head of the “Men Travel” tour agency on Saturday under anti-LGBT laws, Tass reported. The news agency said that the 48-year-old was suspected of preparing a trip for “the supporters of nontraditional sexual values” to visit Egypt over Russia’s New Year's holidays. The raids mirror the concerns of Russian activists who warned that Moscow’s designation of the “LGBTQ+ movement” as “extremist” — despite it not being an official entity — could see Russian authorities crack down at will on groups or individuals. Other recent laws have also served to put pressure on those that the Russian government believes aren't in line with the country’s “traditional values.” On Nov. 23, Putin signed into law a bill banning the adoption of Russian children by citizens of countries where gender-affirming care is legal. The Kremlin leader also approved legislation that outlaws the spread of material that encourages people not to have children .

By Political Reporter-President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s top aide and Masvingo Provincial Affairs Minister Ezra Chadzamira has been taken to court over allegations of seizing an 8-hectare plot in Morningside, Masvingo, belonging to widow Farai Mazenge Mutsetse. According to Mutsetse’s High Court application, vital documents related to the property have vanished from Masvingo City Council’s files, leaving only a house plan. However, Mutsetse retained her own copies, including a full ownership history dating back to 1998, and proof of up-to-date payments for water, rates, and services. Chadzamira, who claims to have bought the plot from the Ministry of Local Government, has failed to produce any documentation to support his ownership claim despite requests from Mutsetse’s lawyers, Dube Banda Nzarayapenga. The widow alleges Chadzamira has disrupted her farming activities and taken over grazing land with unauthorized construction. This is not the first time Chadzamira has been accused of targeting widows. In 2016, he reportedly seized a mansion and a farm, Cresta Ibeka, from 66-year-old Yvonne Goddard, leaving her homeless. Mutsetse is seeking an urgent court order to stop construction, evict Chadzamira, and restore her rights to the land. She says the ordeal has caused immense emotional distress. The defendants in the case include Chadzamira, Masvingo City Council’s Housing Director, the Minister of Local Government, and Masvingo City Council itself. Sources say ratepayers may bear heavy legal costs due to the council’s involvement in Chadzamira’s alleged personal interests. The case raises fresh concerns about abuse of power and land disputes involving top officials in Zimbabwe. -Masvingo Mirror

Why world is paying dearly for absurd 76-day gap between Trump’s win & him taking office...are we now headed for WW3?NoneThe national government has summoned Congress for extraordinary sessions between December 5 and 27 to debate six bills including the elimination of the PASO primaries via electoral reform, Presidential Spokesperson Manuel Adorni said Thursday. The other bills cover political reform, trials in absentia, the anti-mafia law, presidential travel and the reform of political immunity – but not the 2025 Budget presented with such fanfare by President Javier Milei last September 15, due to a lack of consensus in Congress committees. Other absentees in Adorni’s list were the privatisation of Aerolíneas Argentinas, the ‘ ’ bill to bar those with confirmed corruption convictions from electoral candidacy and the Supreme Court nominations of Ariel Lijo and Manuel García-Mansilla with the votes reportedly lacking. The government aim for the extraordinary sessions is to advance with its electoral reform package, including the elimination of the PASO primaries and changes in party financing. Libertarian deputy Martín Menem was re-elected as Congress Speaker on Wednesday with the support of most parliamentary caucuses, except Unión por la Patria, which decided to abstain. His vice-presidents will be Cecilia Moreau (Unión por la Patria), Silvia Lospennato (PRO) and Julio Cobos (UCR). Presidential chief-of-staff Karina Milei and Adorni were among those present at the speaker's re-election. – TIMES/NA Ads Space Ads Space

Single father Epeli Balawa, 50, dropped to his knees, overcome with emotion, when his daughter’s name, Repeka Koroi, was announced as the Year Eight dux award recipient at Vudibasoga Catholic School in Seaqaqa, Macuata, yesterday. Mr Balawa, a yaqona farmer of Korovuli Village said those were tears of joy because Repeka also received a sponsorship letter from Mahatma Gandhi Memorial High School to further pursue her education and sporting career. The second eldest of four siblings had won gold in the Under-14 girls 800 meters final and 1500 metres final at last month’s Fiji Primary Schools Tucker Ice Cream Games at the HFC Bank stadium, Suva. “Since my wife left four years ago, I have been looking after my four children and it hasn’t been easy,” Mr Balawa said. “I am crying more because Repeka has followed by footstep as I was Bulavou District School Year Eight dux in 1989.” Repeka scored 425 out of 500 in the annual examination. The 14-year-old achiever aspires to be a primary school teacher; she has been staying in the school’s hostel with her siblings aged six, ten and 15. “Every Friday we go home to spend time with dad and then return to school on Monday,” Repeka said. “I dedicate my achievement to my father and wish him long life from God since he is the only one I have.” She described some moments when she used to cry inside the dining hall while having dinner thinking whether the father has eaten or not. “My father’s parents passed away and when we’re in school he’s alone at home,” she said. “When we leave home on Monday for school, he wakes up at 4am to prepare breakfast and dress up the younger siblings for school even though it’s difficult for him.” She thanked the teachers for their kindness and coach, Iosefo Apisai for training her to win the two gold medals.
