Bristol Zoo auctions off Victorian benches despite legal threatsThe New York Jets are turning to one of their former general managers to help them find their next GM and head coach. The franchise announced Monday that The 33rd Team, a football media, analytics and consulting group founded by former Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum, will assist team owner Woody Johnson in the searches. Tannenbaum and Rick Spielman, former GM of the Miami Dolphins and Minnesota Vikings, will be The 33rd Team's primary representatives in helping find replacements for former coach Robert Saleh and GM Joe Douglas. The 33rd Team was founded in 2019 by Tannenbaum as a media and technology company. In their announcement, the Jets said The 33rd Team will help identify and vet GM and coach candidates and coordinate interviews. Douglas was fired last Tuesday , the latest shakeup for a franchise that had Super Bowl aspirations with a healthy Aaron Rodgers at quarterback but has limped to a 3-8 start and appears likely to miss the playoffs for a 14th consecutive year. Phil Savage, a senior football adviser with the Jets since 2019, will serve as the interim general manager for the rest of the season. The firing of Douglas came exactly six weeks after Johnson fired Saleh as coach on Oct. 8 after the Jets were 2-3 to open the season. New York has since gone 1-5 under defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich, who was tabbed as the interim coach. The Jets are coming off their bye-week break and will host the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday. The franchise has plenty of questions to answer over the next several months, including decisions on their next general manager and coach — and the future of Rodgers. The four-time NFL MVP turns 41 next week, has dealt with leg issues all season and is off to the worst statistical start of his career. Tannenbaum and Spielman will help the Jets find the people to help Johnson and brother Christopher make those key decisions. Johnson took a similar approach in 2015, the last time the Jets hired a general manager and coach in the offseason. Former NFL GMs Charley Casserly and Ron Wolf worked as consultants for the team, which hired Mike Maccagnan as GM and Todd Bowles as coach. Tannenbaum, currently an analyst for ESPN, has first-hand familiarity with Johnson and the franchise. He worked in the Jets' front office for nine years before being promoted to general manager and serving in that role from 2006 to 2012. Tannenbaum helped build the 2009 and 2010 Jets teams that went to the AFC championship game in consecutive seasons under coach Rex Ryan. Ryan, who last coached the Jets in 2014 and also is currently an analyst for ESPN, recently has been lobbying on air for a return to New York's sideline. Tannenbaum also was Miami’s executive vice president of football operations from 2015 to 2018. Spielman served as the Vikings’ general manager from 2012 to 2021 after working as the team’s vice president of player personnel for six years. He was also the Dolphins’ GM in 2004 and served as an adviser last year for the Washington Commanders in their GM and coaching searches. This story has been corrected to show that Spielman was formerly GM of the Minnesota Vikings instead of the Detroit Lions. AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/NFL

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — John Elway says any remorse over bypassing Josh Allen in the 2018 NFL draft is quickly dissipating with rookie Bo Nix's rapid rise, suggesting the Denver Broncos have finally found their next franchise quarterback. Elway said Nix, the sixth passer selected in April's draft, is an ideal fit in Denver with coach Sean Payton navigating his transition to the pros and Vance Joseph's defense serving as a pressure release valve for the former Oregon QB. "We've seen the progression of Bo in continuing to get better and better each week and Sean giving him more each week and trusting him more and more to where last week we saw his best game of the year," Elway said in a nod to Nix's first game with 300 yards and four touchdown throws in a rout of Atlanta. For that performance, Nix earned his second straight NFL Rookie of the Week honor along with the AFC Offensive Player of the Week award. People are also reading... "I think the sky's the limit," Elway said, "and that's just going to continue to get better and better." In a wide-ranging interview with The Associated Press, Elway also touted former coach Mike Shanahan's Hall of Fame credentials, spoke about the future of University of Colorado star and Heisman favorite Travis Hunter and discussed his ongoing bout with a chronic hand condition. Elway spent the last half of his decade as the Broncos' GM in a futile search for a worthy successor to Peyton Manning, a pursuit that continued as he transitioned into a two-year consultant role that ended after the 2022 season. "You have all these young quarterbacks and you look at the ones that make it and the ones that don't and it's so important to have the right system and a coach that really knows how to tutelage quarterbacks, and Sean's really good at that," Elway said. "I think the combination of Bo's maturity, having started 61 games in college, his athletic ability and his knowledge of the game has been such a tremendous help for him,'" Elway added. "But also Vance Joseph's done a heck of a job on the defensive side to where all that pressure's not being put on Bo and the offense to score all the time." Payton and his staff have methodically expanded Nix's repertoire and incorporated his speed into their blueprints. Elway lauded them for "what they're doing offensively and how they're breaking Bo into the NFL because it's a huge jump and I think patience is something that goes a long way in the NFL when it comes down to quarterbacks." Elway said he hopes to sit down with Nix at some point when things slow down for the rookie. Nix, whose six wins are one more than Elway had as a rookie, said he looks forward to meeting the man who won two Super Bowls during his Hall of Fame playing career and another from the front office. "He's a legend not only here for this organization, but for the entire NFL," Nix said, adding, "most guys, they would love to have a chat with John Elway, just pick his brain. It's just awesome that I'm even in that situation." Hall of Fame Orange Crush linebacker Randy Gradishar joined Elway in the Pro Football Hall of Fame this year, something Elway called "way, way overdue." Elway suggested it's also long past time for the Hall to honor Shanahan, who won back-to-back Super Bowls in Denver with Elway at QB and whose footprint you see every weekend in the NFL because of his expansive coaching tree. Sanders & Hunter Elway called University of Colorado stars Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders "both great athletes." He said he really hopes Sanders gets drafted by a team that will bring him along like the Broncos have done with Nix, and he sees Hunter being able to play both ways in the pros — but not full time. Elway said he thinks Hunter will be primarily a corner in the NFL but with significant contributions on offense: "He's great at both. He's got great instincts, and that's what you need at corner." Hand condition It's been five years since Elway announced he was dealing with Dupuytren's contracture, a chronic condition that typically appears after age 40 and causes one or more fingers to permanently bend toward the palm. Elway's ring fingers on both hands were originally affected and he said now the middle finger on his right hand is starting to pull forward. So, he'll get another injection of a drug called Xiaflex, which is the only FDA-approved non-surgical treatment, one that he's endorsing in an awareness campaign for the chronic condition that affects 17 million Americans. The condition can make it difficult to do everyday tasks such as shaking hands or picking up a coffee mug. Elway said what bothered him most was "I couldn't pick up a football and I could not imagine not being able to put my hand around a football." VERMILLION, S.D. (AP) — Aidan Bouman threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Javion Phelps with 12 seconds left and South Dakota defeated FCS top-ranked North Dakota State 29-28 on Saturday to claim a share of its first Missouri Valley Football Conference championship. The Coyotes (9-2, 7-1) trailed 28-17 when Bouman threw deep to Jack Martens for a 40-yard touchdown with 3:22 remaining. They got the ball back with 1:16 left and six plays later Bouman was sacked. The Coyotes quickly lined up and Bouman found Phelps alone 2 yards shy of the end zone along the left sideline and he easily scored. Javascript is required for you to be able to read premium content. VERMILLION, S.D. — A touchdown pass with 12 seconds left delivered one of try biggest wins in University of South Dakota football history. Quarterback Aidan Bouman dropped back and found a wide open Javion Phelps streaking down the sideline for a 25-yard touchdown to put the No. 4 Coyotes up 29-28 on No. 1 North Dakota State on Saturday at the DakotaDome in Vermillion. The rest was history as the one-point gap stood as the game’s final score. “Javion made a good play, he found a pocket and we scored,” Bouman said. “We took a sack the play before which wasn’t good, you always want to get the ball out (while running the two-minute drill), but guys got up and got to the ball just we practice. “Guys just made plays. I just had to get the ball out and give guys a chance.” The win earned USD a share of the Missouri Valley Football Conference crown for the first time in program history, which is split three ways with NDSU and South Dakota State. “I’ve been here six years and saw some of the older guys around today,” said defensive lineman Blake Holden, who was one of many seniors recognized before the game. “Growing up a Coyotes fan and living out my childhood dream, doing something that no other team here has done is just surreal. “This win just shows the loyalty and dedication the guys that have been around here and have stuck it out.” The Coyotes (9-2) got out to a 14-0 lead behind a pair of Travis Theis rushing scores. USD’s defense was dominant to start the game. Though NDSU would find ways to move the ball eventually, mainly in the form of quarterback Cam Miller, the Bison’s first nine offensive plays of the game went for a combined nine yards and resulted in a trio of three-and-outs. “I’m very proud of these guys,” said USD head coach Bob Nielson. “We got out the early lead but watched (NDSU) come back and take the lead and just kept playing. “It’s the game it should have been. Championship games should come down to the wire. Doing something that no other team at South Dakota has done is certainly a special accomplishment. But we feel like we have a lot more left to accomplish.” Theis capped off the first USD scoring drive by taking a direct snap and diving over the goal line from six yards out to give the Coyotes a 7-0 lead with 6 minutes, 35 seconds left. He then went in from 12 yards out for his second score as he found a seem on the edge and took it in with 12:44 left in the second to put his team up 14-0 with just under 13 minutes left in the second quarter. North Dakota State bounced back with a 23-yard scoring pass from Miller to Braylon Henderson to cut the USD lead in half. CharMar Brown tied it on a 3-yard rushing score. “We just kept trust in ourselves and stuck to our game plan,” said USD senior defensive back Dennis Shorter. USD responded by taking the lead back on a 37-yard Will Leyland field goal but then saw NDSU answer with 14 unanswered points as Miller rushed in for a touchdown and Brown scored on a 1-yard run with 4:10 left in the fourth quarter to cap off a 20-play, 99-yard drive after USD downed a punt at NDSU 1. “You never think its over until the clock hits zero,” Bouman said. “(During the NDSU drive) I was just pacing up and down the sideline telling guys we need to score (quickly) when we get it back.” The Coyotes’ D held again and Bouman found Jack Martens for a 40-yard TD. South Dakota won possession back with around 1 1⁄2 minutes left and went 58 yards on six plays as Bouman found Phelps for the winner. For NDSU, Miller ended the game 10-22 passing for 174 yards plus 19 carries for 82 yards and two total touchdowns (one rushing, one passing). Brown had two scores and wound up with 54 yards rushing on 10 carries. RaJa Nelson, Bryce Lance and Henderson all had three catches for NDSU as the team had four receivers end the contest with between 40 and 50 yards. Bouman, a redshirt junior, completed 18 of 30 passes for the Coyotes for 272 yards the pair of TDs. Theis, a senior running back, totaled 13 carries for 66 yards plus two TDs while Charles Pierre Jr. and Keyondray Jones-Logan combined for 11 carries and 64 yards. Theis also chipped in four catches for 45 yards. Phelps’ catches all came at opportune times as he ended with 79 yards receiving. Senior Carter Bell hauled in four receptions that went for 60 yards and Martens had two catches for 51 yards. The win solidifies USD’s spot among the teams that will receive a first-round bye in the FCS playoffs and a second-round home game, but USD will find out its fate on Sunday during the NCAA selection show. “That was a heck of a football game,” said Nielson. “This team set out on a mission almost a year ago. The only thing they’ve been focused on was winning a championship. We won one today (a conference title), but that’s not the only one we want, and we’re going to have a chance to play for another one. “There’s a lot more out there for this team, so we’ll see where the bracket shakes out and get back to work.”Djokovic to be coached by Murray for 2025 Australian OpenWheaton Precious Metals Corp. Where to Watch FC Barcelona vs Brest for UEFA Champions League ClashAustralia has joined more than 150 countries at the United Nations to vote in favour of a ceasefire in Gaza and to support the mandate of humanitarian relief agency UNRWA. The vote to back an immediate, permanent ceasefire in Gaza and call for a reversal of Israel’s decision to ban the main UN aid agency operating in the war-torn Gaza Strip was opposed by the US but backed by Canberra’s other Five Eyes allies, the UK, Canada and New Zealand. The Emergency Special Session of the New York-based assembly also urged the release of remaining Israeli hostages who were seized by Hamas on October 7, 2023, the upholding of international humanitarian law to protect civilians and a push towards peace and a two-state solution. The two votes did not change the Australian government’s long held positions on calling for a ceasefire, backing the humanitarian work of UNRWA, and advocating for a two-state solution. But it comes at a time of increased tensions in Australia over accusations that the Government has acted too slowly to tackle a rise in anti-Semitism, and amid intensified scrutiny of Australia’s position on the Middle East. Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu last weekend tied Labor’s “anti-Israel attitude” to the firebombing of a Melbourne synagogue – an accusation the Government vehemently rejects. His comments followed a recent UN vote where Australia joined 156 other countries to demand Israel end its “unlawful presence” in the Occupied Palestinian Territories. The Government has also previously come under fire for its support of UNRWA after it was revealed that at least nine of its employees took part in the October 7 attacks on Israel. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese defended the Government’s approach to the latest votes following a visit to the Sydney Jewish Museum on Wednesday to announce an $8.5 million fund for upgrades. “There’s no change to Australia’s position. Australia’s position is we support a two-state solution..The right of Israel to exist in secure borders,” he said, underscoring the need for all hostages to be released. “There’s no role for Hamas in any future Palestinian state. But over a period of time along with a range of other countries, the United States has been attempting to advance the issue of a long-term solution that would involve the engagement of states in the region as well, all recognising Israel.” Asked about the reason for the Government’s support of the resolutions on ABC Radio National Breakfast, Anne Aly, Minister for Youth, said: “We need to find a resolution and a pathway to peace in the Middle East, and particularly in Israel and Gaza, for the safety of Palestinians and for the safety and the security and the future of Israelis as well.” But shadow minister for home affairs James Paterson accused the Prime Minister of “gas lighting” the Australian Jewish Community. “One of the reasons why this is important is not just because our foreign policy is important, not just because standing with our allies and friends like the United States is important, but because we know that anti-Semites in Australia conflate Israel with Jews” he told Sky News. “We had another powerful demonstration of that this week in Sydney where cars in an area populated by the Jewish community were set on fire and graffiti targeted Israel. They don’t draw any distinction between Israel and Jews,” he said. “So when the Australian government abandons or even worse, vilifies Israel, anti-Semites take encouragement from that and that gives them license and that’s why it’s a serious problem.”
