By ERIC TUCKER WASHINGTON (AP) — A ninth U.S. telecoms firm has been confirmed to have been hacked as part of a sprawling Chinese espionage campaign that gave officials in Beijing access to private texts and phone conversations of an unknown number of Americans, a top White House official said Friday. Biden administration officials said this month that at least eight telecommunications companies , as well as dozens of nations, had been affected by the Chinese hacking blitz known as Salt Typhoon. But Anne Neuberger, the deputy national security adviser for cyber and emerging technologies, told reporters Friday that a ninth victim had been identified after the administration released guidance to companies about how to hunt for Chinese culprits in their networks. The update from Neuberger is the latest development in a massive hacking operation that has alarmed national security officials, exposed cybersecurity vulnerabilities in the private sector and laid bare China’s hacking sophistication. The hackers compromised the networks of telecommunications companies to obtain customer call records and gain access to the private communications of “a limited number of individuals.” Though the FBI has not publicly identified any of the victims, officials believe senior U.S. government officials and prominent political figures are among those whose whose communications were accessed. Officials believe the goal of the hackers was to identify who owned the phones and, if they were “government targets of interest,” spy on their texts and phone calls, she said. The FBI said most of the people targeted by the hackers are “primarily involved in government or political activity.” Neuberger said the episode highlighted the need for required cybersecurity practices in the telecommunications industry, something the Federal Communications Commission is to take up at a meeting next month. “We know that voluntary cyber security practices are inadequate to protect against China, Russia and Iran hacking of our critical infrastructure,” she said. The Chinese government has denied responsibility for the hacking.None
Southern First Bancshares chief accounting officer sells $45,230 in stockSACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California could offer rebates for electric vehicle purchases if the incoming Trump administration eliminates a federal tax credit for people who buy electric cars, Gov. Gavin Newsom said Monday. Newsom, a Democrat, proposed creating a new version of the state’s Clean Vehicle Rebate Program , which was phased out in 2023 after funding 594,000 cars and saving 456 million gallons of fuel, Newsom’s office said. “Consumers continue to prove the skeptics wrong – zero-emission vehicles are here to stay," Newsom said in a statement. "We’re not turning back on a clean transportation future — we’re going to make it more affordable for people to drive vehicles that don’t pollute.” Newsom’s proposal is part of his plan to protect California's progressive policies ahead of Republican President-elect Donald Trump's second term. He called the state Legislature to convene in a special session to help “Trump-proof” state laws by giving the attorney general’s office more funding to fight federal challenges. But a budget shortfall could complicate California’s resistance efforts. Early budget projections show the state could face a $2 billion deficit next year, according to a report released last week by the nonpartisan Legislative Analyst’s Office. That’s an improvement from an estimated $46.8 billion deficit the state faced last year, but the shortfall could still curtail the state’s ability to expand new programs and fight federal legal challenges. Legislative leaders in both chambers have said the state needs to stay prudent in anticipation of future budget deficits. Money for the new rebate system could come from the state's Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund, which is funded by polluters under the state’s cap-and-trade program, the governor's office said. Officials didn’t say how much the program would cost or how the rebates would work. Newsom is expected to offer more details of the possible rebate program during an appearance in Kern County later Monday. California has surpassed 2 million zero-emission vehicles sold, according to Newsom's office. The state has passed policies in recent years to transition away from fossil fuel-powered, cars , trucks , trains and lawn mowers . Trump previously vowed to end federal electric vehicle tax credits , which are worth up to $7,500 for new zero-emission vehicles. There’s also a $4,000 credit for used ones. But Trump later softened his stance as Tesla CEO Elon Musk became a supporter and adviser. Newsom's proposed rebates could exclude Tesla and other automakers in an effort to promote more market competition and innovation, according to the governor's office. But that is subject to negotiation with the state Legislature. Trump criticized Newsom on social media after the governor called for a special session, calling out the high cost of living in California and the state’s homelessness crisis. Trump said Newsom was “stopping all of the GREAT things that can be done to ‘Make California Great Again.’” Newsom said on his podcast earlier this month that he reached out to Trump after the election. He said at a news conference last week that he still hadn’t heard back from the president-elect. California's defunct Clean Vehicle Rebate Program offered rebates on electric cars as high as $2,500. The Hornets head coach was serving a one-match touchline ban but must have been enjoying what he was seeing from his different vantage point right up until the closing seconds of the game. Then he watched his former teammate Andre Gray grab a goal in the very final minute of stoppage time to make it 2-2 and deny Watford their third away win of the season. “Our leaky defence and our away form has been questioned a lot this season, but tonight I’m honestly not too sure how we’ve conceded two goals and not picked up three points,” said Cleverley. “Sometimes goals are scored against the odds, and if you reduce Plymouth to as little as we did this evening, then nine times out of 10 we win that game. “Looking at ourselves, we can’t just say it was a freak goal – we should have done more to be out of sight at 2-1. “I felt like we had so many opportunities in transition and we just weren’t clinical enough. “Rather than say it was about how we defended our box in the last 30 seconds, I’d rather say it’s that we weren’t clinical enough at 2-1 up.” Despite two points disappearing into the dark Devon night Cleverley was not overly harsh on his squad. “I can’t be too angry with the players because it was everything we asked for,” he explained. “We wanted a real underdog mentality when we haven’t got the ball and I thought the players were dogged, aggressive, they won duels and second balls. “Then in possession we showed real class and calmness, and I thought we did all the things I asked for before the game. “We just didn’t get that third goal that you always feel you need when you come here because they score a lot of late goals. “That is what has undone us today.”Millions of Australians grew up by the beach and spent their summers playing in the surf, never knowing deadly critters could be lurking just below the waves. Keep reading to learn all about the world's most dangerous sea creatures, many of whom call the waters around Australia home. DOWNLOAD THE 9NEWS APP : Stay across all the latest in breaking news, sport, politics and the weather via our news app and get notifications sent straight to your smartphone. Available on the Apple App Store and Google Play . Striped pyjama squid are both venomous and poisonous; their bite contains a potent neurotoxin and their slime is poisonous, which they use as a defense mechanism to deter predators. Despite their names, these toxic little cephalopods are found in the waters around Australia, measure just 8cm in length and are actually not squid at all — they're cuttlefish. It's not yet known whether the slime is harmful to humans but it's probably a good idea to avoid handling or ingesting one anyway. Not only are crown-of-thorns starfish responsible for destroying coral reefs around the world, their venemous spines can also cause humans a world of pain. Growing up to 80 cm in diameter, these huge starfish's spines (which can be up to 4cm long) are covered in dangerous plancitoxins which can cause liver damage. They can also release dangerous saponins compounds when threatened, which destroy red blood cells. Humans stung by these intimidating-looking critters can suffer pain, vomiting, swelling and in rare cases, anaphylactic shock and death. It looks like something you'd find in an Aussie backyard but the bristleworm is actually a venomous sea creature. These little worms are covered in stiff, often venomous bristles which can break off easily when bumped or handled by humans. The venomous species, like the fireworm, can cause rashes, itching, burning pain, and swelling for several days after initial contact. It may not look like an animal but fire coral is actually a collection of colonial marine organisms. They vary in size, shape and colour but all are made up of hard skeletons packed with tiny pores which allow them to stretch stinging tentacles out into the water. Even the slightest brush against fire coral can leave humans in intense pain for days on end. This is because of the fire coral's venom, which can also cause side-effects like skin irritation, stinging or burning pain, redness, fever, and hives. Thankfully the sting is nonlethal to humans. They may be beautiful but lionfish are actually one of the more dangerous fish in the sea. Their tall dorsal spines aren't just for display — they're actually full of potent venom that can cause nausea, breathing difficulties and even paralysis in humans. Fortunately deaths from lionfish stings are very rare and usually only occur when the victim already had other existing medical issues. Sea snakes don't go after humans often but that doesn't mean these ocean predators aren't dangerous. There are more than 70 species of sea snakes in the world, most of which are venomous, including this beaked sea snake which is loaded with venom even more potent than that of a cobra. Symptoms after a bite include headache, a thick-feeling tongue, thirst, sweating, and vomiting. Thankfully, most sea snakes rarely inject their venom when biting so human attacks and fatalities are rare. These killers hide in plain sight in reefs and shallow waters around Australia, though most beach-goers wouldn't notice them until it's too late. Stonefish are very ugly, very venomous creatures that use their expert camouflage to blend into the seafloor and coral so they can catch prey unaware. Unfortunately, they can also catch humans unaware with their sharp dorsal spines that are loaded with venom that only releases under pressure. Say, for example, when a human foot lands on them. Dozens of stonefish stings are recorded in Australia every year, however very few deaths have occurred since an antivenom was developed. Most scholars agree that blue-ringed octopuses have killed at least 11 people, though the true number could be as low as seven or as high as 16. Despite being tiny and fragile-looking, these Australian sea creatures carry enough venom to kill 26 adult humans within minutes. The venom produced in their salivary glands can cause nausea, respiratory arrest, heart failure, severe and sometimes total paralysis, blindness, and even death within minutes of a bite. The worst part is that the bite itself is often painless, so victims may not realise they've been bitten until paralysis begins. It looks like a pretty sea shell but picking this up off the ocean floor could land you in hospital. Cone snails are equipped with venom-filled modified teeth that work like harpoons, shooting out of their shells to paralyse prey with a single jab. Usually they feed on small fish, invertebrates and other cone snails but geography cone snails, which can grow up to 15cm long, are also dangerous to humans. Their venom is packed with an estimated 10,000 active compounds and can cause respiratory paralysis resulting in death. According to a 2016 study, they've killed about 15 people in the last 30 years. It's time for the sharks, starting with bull sharks. Credited with almost 120 known attacks on humans and at least 26 fatalities, bull sharks don't hunt people but encounters can be deadly. They are considered particularly dangerous due to their aggressive natures and ability to survive in both saltwater and freshwater environments. They've been found in rivers and creeks around Australia as well as in our ocean waters and tend to lurk in shallow waters, which increases the risk of run-ins with humans. Tiger sharks have killed about 40 people and are known to have attacked at least 140 humans. These sharks are territorial, aggressive and known to bite into just about anything, including people in some unfortunate circumstances. They often dwell near shallow reefs and in river mouths, bringing them closer to humans than shark species that stick to the open oceans. Though they're fearsome, tiger sharks don't hunt humans on purpose and only a few attacks are recorded each year. With over 350 known attacks and about 60 fatalities on record, the great white shark has long been considered one of the deadliest creatures in the ocean. These huge sea predators can grow to over six metres long and have mouths packed with serrated teeth, but they don't target human prey on purpose. In fact, many attacks on surfers over the years have been put down to cases of mistaken identity, as a human on a surfboard can appear like a seal to a great white shark swimming in the depths below. Even so, these intimidating sharks are best avoided. It's about the size of a fingernail and far less visually intimidating than the sharks and sea snakes on this list, but the most deadly creature in the sea is widely believed to be the box jellyfish. Box jellyfish are estimated to have caused at least 69 deaths since record keeping began in 1883 and one of the most well-known species is the Irukandji, which lives in the waters off Australia's north east. These tiny critters are among the most venomous jellyfish in the world, can cause fatal brain hemorrhages, and send between 50 and 100 people to the hospital every year.
North Macedonian political party demands ban on TikTok after at least 17 students injuredOn Friday, eight teams took turns to sweat it out, one last time, a day before Hockey India League version 2.0 kicks off at the Birsa Munda Stadium here, officially the largest for hockey in the world. While some of them went through their final calculations and combinations as the Indians and foreigners in the ranks trained together, others hoped the plans on paper would seamlessly translate to performance on field. While the on-field success of HIL will only be known later, the league hasn’t had the smoothest of starts off it. The pre-tournament coaches’ media interaction, while largely positive, did have some interesting insights, specially on the large-scale withdrawals by foreign players for various reasons. Although most of the coaches insisted that they were satisfied with the final squad assembled by the various teams, they also admitted that the withdrawals necessitated changes in planning. “Of course there is a basic line-up in your head when you go for the auction. I think for the foreign players, if they put in what is the minimum fee they expect and make their time free for the entire tournament here, then they have an obligation to come. Now they only have to put in their names and there is no obligation, that has to change. The good thing is that all the franchises have the same problem, at the end we are happy with the players we have,” UP Rudras coach Paul van Ass said. Interestingly Paul’s son Seve, part of the gold-winning Dutch side at the Paris Olympics, was picked up UP and is amongst the players to pull out but the Dutch coach simply shrugged, implying he had little to do with Seve’s decision. England coach Paul Revington, meanwhile, admitted that the timing of the HIL affected participation. “I have a different perspective. The international calendar is very busy and the HIL, while it’s fantastic to be reintroduced, came into the calendar quite late from a planning point of view. All the coaches probably anticipated that there were going to be moments when players realised they had a lot of competition in December-January and with clubs. That said, there are enough international players to fill each position so all of us are flexible and adaptable,” he added. At last count, 21 men and eight women overseas players had pulled out, despite Hockey India categorically stating that anyone refusing to come after being bought at the auction for non-medical reasons will be barred for three seasons. Clearly, late introduction is only one of the reasons, which also falls through given that the FIH had informed everyone about the allotted exclusive window. Hockey India has insisted that the primary focus of the HIL will be on Indian players but there is no denying that you need foreign presence to make it truly world-class and competitive. “I think it’s important to understand that the hockey calendar is very full but I also understand that the welfare of players has to be considered, both through the calendar and for this tournament. For most foreign players, the Pro League finished on December 15-16, so they have not had much of a rest time either. I made the decision to allow our foreign players to spend Christmas with family and join late. I don’t think HI will have a tournament during Diwali, it’s similar. The previous editions started in January so that allowed foreign players some private time. That said, I think it needs consideration from HI in the programming going forth,” Kalinga Lancers’ Strategy Director David John suggested. Kalinga, in fact, are the only team to have no pull-outs in either of its teams. The player withdrawals is not the only concern for Hockey India. The lack of enough sponsors and not enough marketing and publicity for the league beyond the bare minimum is clearly visible and franchises are non-committal on its sustainability. Central sponsorship and media rights form a major chunk of revenue in any franchise-based league and while no one is willing to go on record, the two will be critical for HIL to survive long term. With Doordarshan as broadcast partner, the hopes of media rights revenue is not too high while Hero as the title sponsor is the only major central sponsor on board as of now. Everything else is being done only at individual team levels. “After cricket, hockey ticks every single box that it takes to become a successful league. It has the connect, the fan base and now also international success. It is also the one sport apart from cricket where the Indian team is among the best in the world. Logically, it should be easy to sell. We are aware there will be teething troubles and optimistic it will eventually be successful but for that, HI needs to constantly listen, review and recalibrate going forward,” is the cautiously unanimous opinion among the teams. Sources also say that some of the franchises are yet to pay the full fee for the first year, raising questions on both their long-term viability and interest in the league although HI officials have refuted the same. Off record, though, teams admit that not everyone is in for the long haul. “Even in IPL teams disbanded and changed ownership. It is not easy to stay invested for 8-10 years not knowing when you can break even. It needs both – deep pockets and a long-term vision – to do that,” two of the team investors admitted. At the ground level, the city of Rourkela itself is a study in contrast when compared to the 2023 World Cup. While the city was plastered with banners, hoardings and media blitz back then, there is hardly any buzz this time around. People on the streets are unaware of the HIL and those who are, do not have any idea about the kind of tournament it is. “Forget hoardings, there is hardly anything on social media or Youtube also. During the World Cup, everyone knew it was happening. Not this time,” they say. The hoardings are few and far between with even the immediate vicinity of the stadium devoid of any kind of publicity. For a hockey competition in a city in Odisha – called the spiritual home of hockey by Revington – that doesn’t augur well. Hockey India officials have constantly insisted that the revamped HIL was two years in planning before it was launched. For the sport’s sake, one hopes the plans pay off. Using this function, batteries for the Mavic 3 series, Air 3, Inspire 3, and Matrice 30 series of drones can be charged from 10% to 95% in just 30 minutes, a game-changer for drone operators needing quick turnaround times. DJI Power 1000 The larger of the two, the Power 1000 , offers 1024Wh of power. It includes two AC output ports capable of handling continuous loads of 2200W and surge loads of 4400W. Additionally, it has two USB-C ports supporting 140W output, two USB-A ports, and SDC and SDC Lite ports for diverse connectivity options. This unit weighs 13 kg. DJI Power 500 For those needing a more compact option, DJI offers the Power 500 , a smaller unit that still packs a punch with 512Wh of power. The Power 500 features a similar array of ports as the Power 1000, although it only includes the SDC Lite version and lacks the full SDC port. The AC ports on the Power 500 are designed for continuous loads of 1000W and surge loads of 1600W, making it well-suited for less demanding applications. The USB-C ports provide a solid output of 100W each. This smaller unit weighs only 7.3 kg. To illustrate the practical applications of these power stations, let's look at what DJI says they can do in real-world scenarios. The Power 1000, with its 1024Wh capacity, can recharge a smartphone approximately 57 times or keep a car refrigerator running for about 19 hours. This makes it an excellent choice for extended outdoor activities or emergencies where power reliability is crucial. On the other hand, the smaller Power 500, with its 512Wh capacity, can manage about 28 smartphone recharges or sustain a car refrigerator for just under 10 hours. While it offers less endurance than the Power 1000, it's still quite capable for day trips, shorter outings, or as a backup power source for smaller devices and appliances. Also: The best portable power stations you can buy: Expert tested These capabilities make both models versatile tools for a variety of power needs, from daily convenience to critical support in off-grid situations. Notably, DJI has opted for the safe and durable LiFePO4 (lithium iron phosphate) battery technology in both models. Brock Purdy will miss Sunday's game for the 49ers with a shoulder injuryNov. 22 (UPI) -- As news of Donald Trump 's re-election begins to ripple through North Korea 's top echelons, surprise and curiosity are inevitable reactions among its high-ranking officials. How could a former president return to office after being out of power? For those used to the rigid succession of power in North Korea's single-family dynasty , this democratic turn of events would be both puzzling and thought-provoking. In a country where political power is synonymous with the Kim family's rule, the notion that a president could lose an election, regroup, and come back to power seems almost otherworldly.
President-elect Donald Trump tore into the felony criminal cases that had been filed against him by special counsel Jack Smith, calling them “empty and lawless,” after Smith requested to drop the cases Monday due to Trump soon taking office. In a two-part post on Truth Social, Trump slammed the indictments against him related to his handling of classified documents and the 2020 election’s certification as a waste of taxpayers’ money. “These cases, like all of the other cases I have been forced to go through, are empty and lawless, and should never have been brought. Over $100 Million Dollars of Taxpayer Dollars has been wasted in the Democrat Party’s fight against their Political Opponent, ME,” he wrote . “It was a political hijacking, and a low point in the History of our Country that such a thing could have happened, and yet, I persevered, against all odds, and WON,” he continued. A Trump spokesperson also separately hailed the Justice Department’s decision as a “major victory for the rule of law.” “The American People and President Trump want an immediate end to the political weaponization of our justice system and we look forward to uniting our country,” Trump’s communications director, Steven Cheung, said in a statement . Smith did not conclude that Trump is innocent of the charges against him as his reason for requesting the two cases to be dismissed. Instead, he cited the Justice Department’s long-standing policy not to prosecute a sitting president, which Trump will be following his inauguration in January, as his reason for requesting the indictments be dropped. Smith said his department consulted with its Office of Legal Counsel before coming to its decision and that despite the dismissal, the federal government continues to stand “fully behind” the merits of its original prosecution against Trump. “The government’s position on the merits of the defendant’s prosecution has not changed,” he said. “But the circumstances have.” Both cases were requested to be dismissed “without prejudice,” meaning that the charges could be refiled against Trump once he leaves office. The Bison (11-2), in the FCS playoffs for a 15th straight season and winner of nine FCS titles, will host seventh-seeded Mercer in the quarterfinals. Abilene Christian (9-5) took a 17-3 lead on a 13-yard TD pass from Maverick McIvor to J.J. Henry, a 90-yard run by Sam Hicks and a Ritse Vaes 29-yard field goal early in the second quarter. The Bison then took over, starting with Jackson Williams' 100-yard kickoff return to start a run of 31 consecutive points, 17 coming in the second quarter for a 20-17 halftime lead. The scoring streak ended when Nehemiah Martinez’s 53-yard return helped set up Hicks’ 3-yard score to get the Wildcats within 34-24. But the Bison matched that TD on their ensuing drive on Miller’s 36-yard connection with Bryce Lance to cap their 21-point third quarter. Again, the Wildcats got within 10 early in the fourth quarter on Rovaughn Banks Jr.’s 2-yard TD run. But NDSU’s Marcus Gulley returned an interception 37 yards to the ACU 9 and the Crosa kicked a field goal and Logan Kopp followed with a 31-yard pick-6. was leaving a Hilton hotel in Midtown Manhattan early Wednesday morning when a gunman fatally shot him from behind. The New York Police Department said the gunman — clad in a mask that partially obscured his face — struck Thompson at least once in the back and at least once in the right calf before fleeing the scene. Emergency responders transported the insurance executive to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 7:12 a.m. The entire shooting was captured by a surveillance camera and shared on social media, where the footage racked up hundreds of thousands of views. Authorities later released full-color surveillance images of the gunman, including one that showed him with his mask pulled down and smiling. Yet, the gunman is still at large after four days despite a citywide manhunt led by the largest metropolitan police force in the country. On Friday, authorities told CNN they believed the gunman had managed to leave the city by bus. The gunman's ability to evade capture so far has highlighted the limits of surveillance, even in a city like New York, where authorities have access to that can track millions of people daily. "You have got to remember, he was running around a city of 9 million people," Joseph Giacolone, a former NYPD Sergeant and professor at the John Jay School of Criminal Justice, told Business Insider. "You know, it's not that easy to pick somebody up the street, especially if they're all buttoned up." After the in 2001, expanded surveillance across the country. Bush signed the Aviation and Transportation Act that November, creating the . That same year, the Bush administration ushered in the USA Patriot Act, which expanded law enforcement's ability to use surveillance. The US Congress later created the . The department launched a nationwide campaign — "If You See Something, Say Something" — encouraging citizens to report suspicious activity to law enforcement to prevent terrorism and other criminal acts. Since then, the emphasis on has spread nationwide, including in New York City, where cameras are now everywhere. Amnesty International, a human rights organization, said there were over 25,500 surveillance cameras in New York City in a 2022 report. The NYPD has used images from the ubiquitous cameras to track crimes and for use in software. The NYPD's "Facial Identification Section" received 9,850 requests for comparison and returned 2,510 possible matches in 2019 — a roughly 25% match rate. The agency said it's unaware of cases in NYC in which a person was falsely arrested due to a facial recognition match. This May, New York City Mayor Eric Adams launched a pilot program focused on using technology to increase public safety. The "community-based security camera integration platform" will allow businesses to "voluntarily share information in real-time with the NYPD through existing closed-circuit television cameras," according to a press release. The emergence of and smartphones has added another layer of monitoring. In 2022, the NYPD said it would join and monitor the , where residents share information on crime and safety. "While the NYPD will not monitor the app around the clock, it will have the capacity to view, post and respond to crime- and safety-related information posted publicly by the users of the app," a press release said. Commissioner Jessica Tisch told CNN on Friday that the department had already collected "lots of forensic evidence" and was "processing a tremendous amount of evidence in this case." She said there is also a "massive camera canvass" of the suspect's movements through the city. Additionally, a law enforcement official told CNN that investigators found a backpack in Central Park they believe belonged to the suspect but had not officially confirmed where it came from. Authorities took the backpack for tests. Giacolone told BI that while the shooting suspect has evaded capture for now, it will be difficult for him to elude authorities as they collect more evidence. The NYPD will be looking for what he called "the three horsemen of forensics" to solve the case, which are video surveillance, cellphone records, and internet records. "I've been on these investigations," Giacolone said. "They know what hole he crawled out of, what hole he went back into. As far as I'm concerned, they already know who he is. They just got to find him." Read the original article on
Special Counsel files to drop all federal charges against TrumpCARSON, Calif. — The LA Galaxy finished 26th in the 29-team Major League Soccer standings just one season ago, and their biggest supporters boycotted certain matches to protest a decade of poor performance. The most successful club in league history seemed light years away from its luminous prime. When the Galaxy raised the MLS Cup again Saturday amid confetti and fireworks, their spectacular transformation was complete. In only one year, a team that was profoundly lost had rediscovered its peerless championship pedigree. "We won this trophy, and it's finally back where it belongs," striker Dejan Joveljic said. Joseph Paintsil and Joveljic scored in the first half, and the Galaxy won their record sixth MLS Cup championship with a 2-1 victory over the New York Red Bulls. After striking twice in the first 13 minutes of the final, the Galaxy nursed their lead through a scoreless second half to raise their league's biggest trophy for the first time since 2014. MLS' most successful franchise struggled through most of the ensuing years, but everything changed after LA spent smartly in the offseason to build a high-scoring new lineup topped by Paintsil, Joveljic and Gabriel Pec. The Galaxy finished second in the Western Conference and streaked through the postseason with an MLS playoff-record 18 goals in five games to win another crown. "I'm just so proud of this group after the challenges that we (had) and the way they bounced back and competed as a group," Galaxy coach Greg Vanney said. "We spent a lot of energy at the start, but I'm just so proud of these guys. They've cemented themselves as legends in this club." The Galaxy even won this title without perhaps their most important player. Riqui Puig, the playmaking midfielder from Barcelona who ran their offense impressively all season long, tore a ligament in his knee last week in the conference final. Puig watched this game in a suit, but the Catalan catalyst's teammates hadn't forgotten him: After his replacement, Gastón Brugman, set up LA's opening goal with a superb pass in the ninth minute, Paintsil held up Puig's jersey to their roaring fans during the celebration. "I was really waiting for this moment," said Paintsil, who scored his 14th goal of an impressive season. "I'm much more, 10 times faster than them, and Gaston saw the space. ... It was really a good thing. We did it for Riqui, and we did it for our family that came, and our supporters." Just four minutes later, Joveljic sprinted past four New York defenders and chipped home his 21st goal. Brugman was named the MLS Cup MVP after a commanding performance in midfield. The Uruguayan hadn't started a match for the Galaxy since Oct. 5 after an injury-slowed season, playing only as a postseason substitute before the final. "I dreamed of that yesterday, of something I could give to the team," Brugman said of his pass to Paintsil. "Today, it happened." Sean Nealis scored for the seventh-seeded Red Bulls, whose improbable postseason charge ended one win shy of their first Cup championship. With the league's youngest roster, New York fell just short of becoming the lowest-seeded team to win the tournament under first-year German coach Sandro Schwarz. "I love these guys," Schwarz said. "Some guys, they are crying. In the big picture, that's a start. Sometimes when you lose the final, it's tough, but you use this experience to create the next energy, the next intensity." Galaxy goalkeeper John McCarthy made four saves to win his second MLS title in three seasons, but Nealis beat the 2022 MLS Cup MVP in the 28th minute when he volleyed from the penalty area. The second half was lively: Red Bulls captain Emil Forsberg hit the outside of the post in the 72nd minute, while Pec and Galaxy substitute Marco Reus nearly converted chances a few moments later. The ball got loose in the Galaxy's penalty area in the third minute of extra time, but two Red Bulls couldn't finish. After Galaxy owner Phil Anschutz received the MLS Cup that bears his name because of his steady financial support of the league during its shaky years, Galaxy captain Maya Yoshida carried the trophy to his teammates for the celebration. The Galaxy extended their lead over DC United (4) for the most MLS Cup championships in league history. The Red Bulls remain one of three original MLS franchises never to win the title, along with FC Dallas and the New England Revolution. The Galaxy finished 17-0-3 this season at their frequently renamed suburban stadium, where the sellout crowd of 26,812 for the final included several robust cheering sections of Red Bulls supporters hoping to see their New Jersey-based club's breakthrough. But this season was about the Galaxy's rebirth. The club famous for employing global stars from David Beckham and Zlatan Ibrahimovic to Robbie Keane and Javier "Chicharito" Hernández swiftly turned itself into a contender again by acquiring young talents without international fame. The Galaxy signed Pec from Brazil and grabbed Paintsil, a Ghanaian playing in Belgium. The duo combined with Joveljic to form a potent attack with orchestration from Puig, one of MLS' best players. "Losing a guy like Riqui after the performance he put in all season was devastating," McCarthy said. "Even if he wasn't on the field, we did it for him." San Francisco has officially made the move to activate safety Talanoa Hufanga from injured reserve. After attempting to make a comeback earlier this year, the hope is that, this time, Hufanga will be healthy enough and here to stay. Hufanga’s initial return was from a torn ACL that he suffered just over a year ago. The team activated him from the active/PUP list just prior to the start of the regular season to ensure that he wouldn’t miss the first four games of the year. A limited runup to the season meant a limited snap share when he finally did return to the lineup, though, and after missing the first two games of the season, Hufanga made his official return in Week 3. Hufanga missed a game after his 2024 debut before getting his second start, but he left that second game early and did not return. In the process of his comeback, Hufanga had suffered ligament damage in his wrist , necessitating an unfortunate return to IR. There was seemingly no guarantee that he would return this season, but the team ended up opening his practice window earlier this week. Hufanga, who is in a contract year, will not be 100 percent in his return as he still needs support for his injured wrist. With a potential free-agency run coming, though, Hufanga will attempt to give it a go. In order to make room on the 53-man roster for Hufanga, the Niners officially made the move to place running back Jordan Mason on IR. Joining Mason on IR will be backup safety George Odum, who has missed the past week of practice dealing with a knee issue that will seemingly end his season. With an additional roster spot being made available, San Francisco will sign practice squad offensive tackle Sebastian Gutierrez to the active roster. Signed to the practice squad last week after some time in Indianapolis, Gutierrez was elevated for last weekend’s contest but hasn’t appeared in a game since 2022. Joining Gutierrez for gameday from the practice squad will be linebacker Jalen Graham and running back Ke’Shawn Vaughn. As standard practice squad elevations, Graham and Vaughn will revert to the practice squad after the game, while Gutierrez will remain on the 53-man roster.
