But amidst these medical check-ins, there's one important question that doesn't always get asked: Do you feel connected? Feeling and being connected to others is a protective factor for our health and wellbeing. We know that isolation and loneliness kills more people than cancer and tobacco. There is not greater evidence than the COVID years to show us just how important community connection is. During times of mandated isolation, we saw firsthand how crucial it is to be surrounded by those we feel we belong with - to feel seen, heard, and valued. As social beings, we thrive on these connections. We don't just need food, water and shelter to survive - we need a sense of belonging, and it becomes even more important as we age. According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW), one in three Australians aged 65 and over experience loneliness at least some of the time. While this is a distressing statistic, it isn't entirely surprising. Older Australians often face barriers such as mobility issues, declining social circles, a lack of transport, or cognitive decline that increase the risk of social isolation. Loneliness is not just an emotional experience, it can contribute to serious health problems such as depression, anxiety, weakened immune systems and increased risk of chronic disease. Social isolation has been linked to some of the biggest health risks for older people, to the extent that some experts consider it a global epidemic. So, the question is - what can we do to help? At Warrigal, our vision is simple: a world where older people feel known, loved, and connected. As CEO, I am privileged to lead an organisation that has been recognised on national platforms for its commitment to quality care and services for over 4,500 older people across NSW and the ACT. But while we've made great strides, there's still so much more to be done - and that starts with all of us. The good news is that the aged care sector is already making significant progress. But the work doesn't end with aged care providers. It's a shared responsibility. We all have a role to play in combatting loneliness and isolation among older Australians. It's about recognising the immense value older people bring to our communities. They are not just recipients of care - they have wisdom to share, stories to tell, and experiences that can enrich the lives of those around them. In the coming months, I urge you to consider how you can contribute to building a more connected society for older Australians. Whether it's offering a kind word, visiting a neighbour, volunteering, or simply acknowledging the contributions older people make, small acts of kindness can go a long way in combatting isolation. Palmer Luckey, the founder of Oculus, is positioning Anduril Industries—his Southern California startup defense firm—as a challenger to military-industrial giants like Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, Boeing, and General Dynamics. Anduril announced on Wednesday a strategic partnership with Sam Altman's OpenAI to develop and deploy advanced artificial intelligence for national security missions. " By bringing together OpenAI's advanced models with Anduril's high-performance defense systems and Lattice software platform, the partnership aims to improve the nation's defense systems that protect U.S. and allied military personnel from attacks by unmanned drones and other aerial devices ," the startup wrote in a statement. We've all seen the shocking kamikaze drone footage posted on X, showing drones neutralizing commercial vessels in the southern Red Sea or the Gulf of Aden, as well as suicide drones hunting soldiers in Ukraine. Anduril and OpenAI's strategic partnership will focus on upgrading America's counter-unmanned aircraft systems "to detect, assess and respond potentially lethal aerial threats in real-time," according to the startup, adding, "As part of the new initiative, Anduril and OpenAI will explore how leading edge AI models can be leveraged to rapidly synthesize time-sensitive data, reduce the burden on human operators, and improve situational awareness." Cam Carter scored LSU's first eight points and finished with a game-high 23 and LSU raced to a 37-8 lead on its way to a 110-45 victory against outmanned Mississippi Valley State on Sunday in Baton Rouge, La. Vyctorius Miller added 20 points and Jordan Sears and Daimion Collins scored 15 each for the Tigers (11-2), who led 55-13 at halftime. It was their final game before opening Southeastern Conference play against visiting Vanderbilt on Saturday. LSU, which defeated Mississippi Valley 106-60 last season, shot 65.7 percent (46 of 70) from the floor. The Delta Devils (2-11) had no player score in double figures. The closest was Alvin Stredic with eight points. Mississippi Valley State remained winless against Division I opponents and have an average margin of defeat of 44.2 points heading into their Southwestern Athletic Conference opener at Alabama State on Jan. 4. Stredic's field goal tied the score at two before Carter made a tie-breaking 3-pointer to give LSU the lead for good. Carter made another 3-pointer during a 7-0 run that increased the lead to 12-4. Another field goal by Stredic ended that run before Carter and Sears each made a 3-pointer and the Tigers pushed the lead to 20-6. Stredic made another field goal, giving him six of his team's first eight points, before Carter made a 3-pointer and another basket to help fuel a 17-0 run that enabled LSU to build the 37-8 bulge. Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield said in a statement that its decision to backpedal resulted from “significant widespread misinformation” about the policy. “To be clear, it never was and never will be the policy of Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield to not pay for medically necessary anesthesia services,” the statement said. “The proposed update to the policy was only designed to clarify the appropriateness of anesthesia consistent with well-established clinical guidelines.” Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield would have used "physician work time values," which is published by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, as the metric for anesthesia limits; maternity patients and patients under the age of 22 were exempt. But Dr. Jonathan Gal, economics committee chair of the American Society for Anesthesiologists, said it's unclear how CMS derives those values. In mid-November, the American Society for Anesthesiologists called on Anthem to “reverse the proposal immediately,” saying in a news release that the policy would have taken effect in February in New York, Connecticut and Missouri. It's not clear how many states in total would have been affected, as notices also were posted in Virginia and Colorado . People across the country registered their concerns and complaints on social media, and encouraged people in affected states to call their legislators. Some people noted that the policy could prevent patients from getting overcharged. Gal said the policy change would have been unprecedented, ignored the “nuanced, unpredictable human element” of surgery and was a clear “money grab.” “It’s incomprehensible how a health insurance company could so blatantly continue to prioritize their profits over safe patient care,” he said. "If Anthem is, in fact, rescinding the policy, we’re delighted that they came to their senses.” Prior to Anthem's announcement Thursday, Connecticut comptroller Sean Scanlon said the “concerning” policy wouldn't affect the state after conversations with the insurance company. And New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said in an emailed statement Thursday that her office had also successfully intervened. The insurance giant’s policy change came one day after the CEO of UnitedHealthcare , another major insurance company, was shot and killed in New York City. Holtzclaw exploded off the edge, past USC right tackle Mason Murphy before wrapping up quarterback Miller Moss and swinging the signal caller around. Holtzclaw would have been a fifth. The Huskies also signed true freshmen Devin Hyde and Victor Sanchez Hernandez. Wednesday afternoon, second-string punter Adam Saul declared he will also seek new opportunities in the portal. “I would like to thank every person that’s been a part of my time in Seattle,” he wrote. “It’s been a blessing to suit up the past two years as a Dawg with all my brothers.” The 6-6, 192-pound Saul never appeared in a game during two seasons with Washington.
