Trump names David Sacks as White House AI and crypto czarNew Delhi: The Supreme Court Friday granted interim relief to six Himachal Pradesh Congress MLAs against disqualification from the state assembly. A division bench headed by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna stayed a Himachal Pradesh High Court order removing the protection granted against disqualification to the six legislators, who had been appointed as chief parliamentary secretaries by the state. The top court also issued notice on an appeal moved by Himachal Pradesh government against the high court ruling that had quashed a 2006 law that allowed it to appoint state legislators as parliamentary secretaries. After quashing the appointment of six Congress MLAs as chief parliamentary secretaries, the high court had declared the protection granted to the Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs) illegal, observing that "natural consequences and legal implications" shall follow in accordance with law. This meant that the legislators ran the risk of facing disqualification from the state legislative assembly. Aggrieved, the Himachal Pradesh government moved the top court. Alphabet -owned Waymo announced Monday that it will start testing its autonomous vehicles in Tokyo in early 2025, the company's first step toward international expansion. > Philadelphia news 24/7: Watch NBC10 free wherever you are Waymo hasn't committed to start commercial service in Tokyo yet, but the robotaxi developer will partner with Japan's largest taxi operator, Nihon Kotsu, and taxi app GO to start testing its Jaguar I-PACE vehicles in Tokyo's streets. To start, Nihon Kotsu drivers will manually operate the Waymo vehicles to map key areas of the Japanese capital, including Minato, Shinjuku, Shibuya, Chiyoda, Chūō, Shinagawa, and Kōtō. Data from the manned test drives will help train the company's AI systems. Waymo will also test its robotaxis on a closed course in the U.S. built to mimic driving conditions in Japan. This is the first phase of the partnerships, which will last several quarters, Waymo told CNBC, adding that it expects to remain in Japan for an extended period. "Our upcoming road trip to Tokyo gives us the chance to work alongside local partners, government officials, and community groups to understand the new landscape," Waymo said in a statement. "We'll learn how Waymo can serve Tokyo's residents and become a beneficial part of the city's transportation ecosystem." Nihon Kotsu will oversee the management and servicing of Waymo's vehicles in Japan, the companies said. Waymo announced a series of expansions across the U.S. in 2024. Earlier this month, the company announced new testing in Miami in 2025, it made its driverless ride hail service available across Los Angeles in November, and in September, it announced planned expansions into Austin and Atlanta in partnership with Uber . The move into Japan marks the company's first in a left-hand traffic market. Both the Japanese national government and Tokyo Metropolitan government see driverless technology as a potential boon to the country's aging population, according to research by the World Economic Forum . Tokyo has designated certain areas as "test zones" for self-driving cars hoping to hasten the arrival of safe driverless transportation systems there. Several developers are working on autonomous vehicles in Japan, including local startup Tier IV and ZMP, a robotics company that is testing delivery vehicles and buses in Tokyo. Monet Technologies, which is partly owned by Toyota , announced plans to test a self-driving taxi service in Tokyo's Odaiba district earlier this year. Waymo's Japan expansion announcement comes a week after General Motors announced it was abandoning its Cruise robotaxi division . Honda, an outside investor in Cruise, told CNBC that it aimed to launch a driverless ride-hail service in Japan in early 2026 but would re-assess those plans and make adjustments if needed. Prior to GM's retreat from robotaxis, Cruise had been one of Waymo's primary domestic competitors. WATCH: GM pulls the plug on robotaxi plan
Published 2:39 pm Monday, December 16, 2024 By Leesa Jones One of the wonders of Christmas is the ability to stir up memories of the Christmas past in people’s lives. Most of you reading this column will have some memories about Christmas you can or have passed on to your children, the children in your family, and their generations. And it seems no matter how much technology has changed the way we live, those shared memories still provide a treasure trove of Christmas delight for the listeners. I loved listening to how my parents and my ancestors celebrated Christmas. My grandparents shared stories of how they made simple gifts of freshly picked pecans, walnuts and peanuts, wrapped in burlap bundles to give to neighbors and friends. My grandmother gave me her molasses taffy recipe and told me how she would make taffy to give as gifts. A cake, or a specially made apron, mittens, or garment became cherished gifts too. And she talked about how even though the gifts were very simple, they were given with great care and love to the recipient. Mama talked about how she went to Washington’s first really big official Christmas tree lighting in 1946. This was special to Mama as she had spent a few years living in Philadelphia and had seen the beautiful Christmas tree that was placed in the City Hall location with all the festivity and carolers around it. Now she was so excited to see the festivity around Washington’s big Christmas tree. The tree was placed in the middle of Main Street at the corner of Market Street. The tree was so big it took three nights to get it just right and decorate it. There was a loudspeaker at the base of the tree so Christmas music could be heard for a block or more. Mama said you could hear it all up and down Main Street and even in some of the stores near the corner. On Christmas Eve, Mr. Edmund Harding led a group of people in the singing of Christmas carols. Mama was moved to tears because for that moment in time, (which was during segregation,) people of all skin colors and ages sang together and celebrated the reason for the Christmas season, Jesus Christ the Lord, and the reason He was born. I wish my parents and grandparents could have witnessed the lightening of Washington’s Christmas tree this year at the corner of Main and Gladden Streets. A huge crowd for that moment in time listened to the children sing, embraced one another and enjoyed the goodwill and joy that being together that night brought about. I can only imagine the stories the young people will tell future generations about that night and the festivities that followed. I pray that for all of us, the gift and the joy of the true meaning of Christmas will shine bright in our hearts and lives as we remember Jesus is the reason for the season. He is the greatest gift ever given (John 3:16) and His love through us can be the best gift we can give one another. Merry Christmas.
Syrian government forces have lost control of Daraa city, a war monitor said, in another stunning blow for President Bashar al-Assad's rule after rebels wrested other key cities from his grip. Daraa was dubbed "the cradle of the revolution" early in Syria's civil war, after activists accused the government of detaining and torturing a group of boys for scribbling anti-Assad graffiti on their school walls in 2011. While Aleppo and Hama, the two other main cities taken from government control in recent days, fell to an Islamist-led rebel alliance, Daraa fell to local armed groups, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. "Local factions have taken control of more areas in Daraa province, including Daraa city... they now control more than 90 percent of the province, as regime forces successively pulled out," the Britain-based Observatory said late Friday, which relies on a network of sources around Syria. Daraa province borders Jordan. Despite a truce brokered by Assad ally Russia, it has been plagued by unrest in recent years, with frequent attacks, clashes and assassinations. Syria's civil war, which began with Assad's crackdown on democracy protests, has killed more than 500,000 people and forced more than half the population to flee their homes. Never in the war had Assad's forces lost control of so many key cities in such a short space of time. Since a rebel alliance led by the Islamist Hayat Tahrir al-Sham launched its offensive on November 27, the government has lost second city Aleppo and subsequently Hama in central Syria. The rebels were on Friday at the gates of Homs, Syria's third city, as the government pulled out its troops from Deir Ezzor in the east to redeploy towards to the centre. In an interview published on Friday, the leader of HTS, Abu Mohammed al-Jolani, said the aim of the offensive was to overthrow Assad. "When we talk about objectives, the goal of the revolution remains the overthrow of this regime. It is our right to use all available means to achieve that goal," Jolani told CNN. HTS is rooted in the Syrian branch of Al-Qaeda. Proscribed as a terrorist organisation by Western governments, it has sought to soften its image in recent years. According to Fabrice Balanche, a lecturer at France's Lumiere Lyon 2 university, HTS now controls 20,000 square kilometres (more than 7,700 square miles) of territory, nearly seven times as much as it did before the offensive started. As the army and its Iran-backed militia allies pulled out of Deir Ezzor in eastern Syria, Kurdish-led forces said they crossed the Euphrates and took control of the territory that had been vacated. The Observatory said government troops and their allies withdrew "suddenly" from the east and headed towards the oasis town of Palmyra on the desert road to Homs. The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces, who are backed by the United States, expressed readiness for dialogue with both Turkey and the rebels, saying the offensive heralded a "new" political reality for Syria. The rebels launched their offensive the same day a ceasefire took effect in neighbouring Lebanon in the war between Israel and Hezbollah. The Lebanese militant group has been an important Assad ally, alongside Russia and Iran. Turkey, which has backed the opposition, said it would hold talks with Russia and Iran in Qatar this weekend. Ahead of the talks, the top diplomats of Iran, Iraq and Syria met in Baghdad, where Syria's Bassam al-Sabbagh accused the government's enemies of seeking to "redraw the political map". Iran's Abbas Araghchi pledged to provide Assad's government with "whatever (support) is needed". In Homs, scene of some of the war's deadliest violence, tens of thousands of members of Assad's Alawite minority were fleeing, fearing the rebels' advance, residents and the Britain-based Observatory said. Syrians who were forced out of the country years ago by the initial crackdown on the revolt were glued to their phones as they watched current developments unfold. "We've been dreaming of this for more than a decade," said Yazan, a 39-year-old former activist who now lives in France. Asked whether he was worried about HTS's Islamist agenda, he said: "It doesn't matter to me who is conducting this. The devil himself could be behind it. What people care about is who is going to liberate the country." On the other side of the sectarian divide, Haidar, 37, who lives in an Alawite-majority neighbourhood, told AFP by telephone that "fear is the umbrella that covers Homs now". The army shelled the advancing rebels as Syrian and Russian aircraft struck from the skies. At least 20 civilians, including five children, were killed in the bombardment, the war monitor added. At least 826 people, mostly combatants but also including 111 civilians, have been killed since the offensive began last week, according to the Observatory's figures, while the United Nations said the violence has displaced 280,000 people. Many of the scenes witnessed in recent days would have been unimaginable earlier in the war. In Hama, an AFP photographer saw residents set fire to a giant poster of Assad on the facade of city hall. "Our joy is indescribable, and we wish this for every honourable Syrian to experience these happy moments that we have been deprived of since birth," said Hama resident Ghiath Suleiman. Online footage verified by AFP showed residents toppling a statue of Assad's father Hafez, under whose brutal rule the army carried out a massacre in the city in the 1980s. Aron Lund, a fellow of the Century International think tank, called the loss of Hama "a massive, massive blow to the Syrian government". Should Assad lose Homs, it wouldn't mean the end of his rule, Lund said, but "with no secure route from Damascus to the coast, I'd say it's over as a credible state entity". bur-ser/rsc

Two charged in connection with Iran drone strike that killed 3 US troops in the Middle EastCurrently it is illegal to ride an e-scooter anywhere in NSW unless it’s in one of the six trial areas being run by Transport for NSW in conjunction with councils, or on private property. With the final stage of the Magenta shared pathway now open, pedestrians and cyclists can ride/walk from The Entrance to Toukley as part of the Tuggerah Lakes loop under Central Coast Council’s Bike Plan. As director of Thriv-E Sales and Hire Service Centre, Speir has applied to Central Coast Council to consider entering an e-scooter trial in conjunction with his business and Transport for NSW (TfNSW). Transport for NSW has been enabling local councils to run e-scooter trials across NSW since 2022. Councils and local road authorities need to apply to run a trial, and TfNSW needs to declare selected roads or areas as an Electric Scooter Use Area under NSW road rules before a trial can start. This makes it legal for people to ride shared e-scooters in these designated trial areas. While Speir admits to having a vested interest, he said he was genuinely concerned a pathway user would be seriously hurt or worse by a speeding e-scooter, and that the Central Coast was missing out on tourism opportunities. His company has invested in Pathway Smart Safety Light (PSSL) technology, a system that allows real-time e-scooter monitoring of pathway use, controls speed and deters dangerous behaviour. “This software is designed to enhance safety on shared pathways and the monitoring is a requirement of the e-scooter trial pack,” he said. “It is designed to help create a safe environment that benefits everyone in the community in the long run. “E-scooters can reach speeds of over 50km an hour and no-one is monitoring them. “The police can’t do anything about it. “No-one is regulating their use, and I really do believe it’s only a matter of time before someone is seriously injured or worse.” The Council has told Speir it had reviewed the opportunity to be involved in a trial but was unsuccessful in getting funding to carry out supporting road safety reviews and other requirements to participate. “We cannot believe we have been shut down by our local Council to participate in a NSW Transport e-scooter trial pack, where we would be required to monitor shared e-scooters within a dedicated trial zone,” Speir said. “It’s such a cool pathway, the Council has spent all that money building it but is not prepared to open it up to everyone. “I firmly believe that the absence of e-scooters on shared pathways is akin to saying “no boarders” at a ski resort – it overlooks a potential market and the economic growth it can bring.” He said the RMS-approved Pathway Smart Safety Light technology would allow the business to monitor and manage pathway use in real time, helping ensure a safe and responsible experience for all users. “By integrating monitored zones and user information, we can create a safer pathway, setting a national example for safe, inclusive pathway use,” Speir said. “This system will actively deter law-breaking and speeding within the monitored zones, creating a secure and appealing environment for all pathway users, which in turn will boost tourism appeal for families and youth alike. “This solution will benefit all users of the pathway, regardless of e-scooter integration, especially given the current presence of illegal riders travelling at high speeds, often well over the 50km/h road limit. “By implementing these measures, we can prevent dangerous behaviour and promote a safe, enjoyable experience for everyone.” Speir has been informed that Council is also waiting for a state-level regulatory framework before taking any action. “While I understand the need for regulations, this stance risks leaving the Central Coast behind other regions, which are already capitalising on tourism and economic opportunities linked to e-scooter use,” he said. “We have the infrastructure in place now, so why are we not using it to its full potential? “E-scooters are the future, and a monitored, safety-focused trial – conducted in collaboration with local transport and ambulance authorities – would show the rest of Australia how to implement shared pathways responsibly and inclusively. “The Tuggerah Lakes pathway was built to revitalise our community. “Without action, its potential will be wasted, and its users endangered. “I urge the Council to step up, take responsibility, and adopt forward-thinking solutions that ensure safety while embracing innovation.” A Council spokesperson said Council reviewed the opportunity to be involved in a trial, which included submitting an expression of interest to participate in the original e-scooter trial, but was unsuccessful in attracting funding to carry out the trial, which also included undertaking supporting road safety reviews and other requirements to participate. She said Council was always open to alternate transport modes, and carefully considered any opportunity to be involved in trials of this nature and Council officers had been monitoring the trials being undertaken. “Council was aware that the government was intending to develop new laws in relation to legalisation and use of e-scooters, and would prefer to wait until such new laws are in place, rather than seek to undertake a new trial. “Council has been receiving numerous complaints about e-scooter use, including safety aspects to both riders and other road and pedestrian traffic, and is looking forward to the release of the new laws to regulate e-scooter use in a safe manner,” the spokesperson said.
