Seeking inspiration for a nonpolitical column running in print on Thanksgiving, I went back in the archives. All the way back to The Seattle Daily Times Thanksgiving Day story of 1897. I felt for the writer. It was a corker but ended up on Page 8. The story described how the city was thankful to be emerging from the 1896 depression. It accurately predicted that a surge of business from the Klondike gold rush would set Seattle on course to becoming one of the "great cities of the Earth." It nailed the region's casual fashion sense, 41 years before REI was founded, and the roar generated by Seattle football fans. The story also foreshadowed today's newspapering, with a heavy emphasis on the weather, same-day news (published in that evening's edition) and a subhead ("Why are You Thankful?") written to goose reader engagement. It left me thankful for the record of history that newspapers provide, and for those who still support them. I'll spare you the description of what was open and closed and the church services on Nov. 25, 1897, and updates on mining and farm activity. The citizens of Seattle had not yet been permitted to see the ray of sunshine that was almost ready to show through the cloud of hard times and scarcity of money. But now all is changed. Where last year existed discouragement, gloom and a fear of what the future might have in store now abides faith in the ultimate restoration of the old days when the problem of how to keep the wolf from the door was never presenting itself for solution and when everyone had enough and to spare. The business men of Seattle are giving thanks today for the discovery of the great quantities of yellow metal in the frozen North, which has been the direct cause of turning the eyes of all the earth to Seattle as the gateway of that region where gold is plentiful beyond the dreams of avarice. They are thankful that next year will, unless every sign shall fall and every indication be deceiving, witness the rush to Seattle of people from every corner of the earth — here to spend their money for an outfit and push on to the North. They realize that this means the city where they have cast their lot and for which they have spent their time, money and energy to build will be numbered among the great cities of the earth. Another urged Washingtonians to be thankful "that this great Commonwealth is free from all turmoil, internal dissensions and famine — conditions which prevail in many other of the nations of the earth." Some, reflecting attitudes of the time, make you wince and appreciate how far we've progressed. Others read like a Jack London novel. Sensational coverage of foreign affairs in the 1890s was also deeply problematic. But it's still remarkable to see how much international news was in a local paper in the boondocks in 1897, especially compared to today's ghost newspapers. They have modern standards but a relative paucity of news. It's hard enough to get people to read any newspaper nowadays, much less old ones in digital file cabinets. But the archives are worth a visit for those who enjoy newspapers and history. The New Orleans Saints officially placed TE Taysom Hill on injured reserve on Friday, per the NFL Transactions wire. Tests earlier this week confirmed the Saints’ fears that Hill is out for the rest of the season with a knee injury. Ian Rapoport repoted Hill tore his ACL and suffered additional damage in his knee. He went down in Sunday’s loss to the Rams and had to be carted off the field. Hill, 34, wound up signing on with the Packers as an undrafted free agent out of BYU back in 2017. He was waived and later claimed off of waivers by the Saints. Hill played out the final year of his rookie contract before receiving a restricted tender from the Saints last year. New Orleans signed Hill to a two-year deal worth $21 million a month later. Hill’s deal was set to void before the 2022 season, but the Saints gave Hill a sizable contract extension . He’s entering the final year of that deal and due a $10 million base salary in 2025. In 2024, Hill appeared in eight games for the Saints and rushed for 278 yards on 39 carries (7.1 YPA) and six touchdowns to go along with 23 receptions on 31 targets for 187 yards. PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — A pair of conservative groups on Friday challenged a Maine law that limits donations to political action committees that spend independently in candidate elections, arguing that money spent to support political expression is "a vital feature of our democracy.” Supporters of the referendum overwhelmingly approved on Election Day fully expected a legal showdown over caps on individual contributions to so-called super PACs. They hoped the referendum would trigger a case and ultimately prompt the U.S. Supreme Court to clarify the matter of donor limits after the court opened the floodgates to independent spending in its 2010 Citizens United decision. The lawsuit brought by Dinner Table Action and For Our Future, and supported by the Institute for Free Speech, contends the state law limiting individual super PAC donations to $5,000 and requiring disclosure of donor names runs afoul of that Citizens United legal precedent. “All Americans, not just those running for office, have a fundamental First Amendment right to talk about political campaigns,” lawyers wrote in the lawsuit in federal court. “Their ‘independent expenditures,’ payments that fund political expression by those who are not running for office but nonetheless have something to say about a campaign, are a vital feature of our democracy.” Cara McCormick, leader of the Maine Citizens to End Super PACs, which pressed for the referendum, said the lawsuit attempts to undermine the will of the people after an overwhelming majority — 74% of voters — approved the referendum last month. “Super PACs are killing the country and in Maine we decided to do something about it. We want to restore public trust in the political process,” she said. “We want to say that in Maine we are not resigned to the tide of big money. We are the tide.” But Alex Titcomb, executive director of Dinner Table Action, argued Friday that the government “cannot restrict independent political speech simply because some voters wish to limit the voices of their fellow citizens.” Named in the lawsuit are Maine’s attorney general and the state’s campaign spending watchdog, the Maine Commission on Governmental Ethics and Election Practices. By REBECCA SANTANA, Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) — The picture of who will be in charge of executing President-elect Donald Trump’s hard-line immigration and border policies has come into sharper focus after he announced his picks to head Customs and Border Protection and also the agency tasked with deporting immigrants in the country illegally. Trump said late Thursday he was tapping Rodney Scott, a former Border Patrol chief who’s been a vocal supporter of tougher enforcement measures, for CBP commissioner. As acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Trump said he’d nominate Caleb Vitello, a career ICE official with more than 23 years in the agency who most recently has been the assistant director for firearms and tactical programs. They will work with an immigration leadership team that includes South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem as head of the Department of Homeland Security ; former acting Immigration and Customs Enforcement head Tom Homan as border czar ; and immigration hard-liner Stephen Miller as deputy chief of staff. Customs and Border Protection, with its roughly 60,000 employees, falls under the Department of Homeland Security. It includes the Border Patrol, which Scott led during Trump’s first term, and is essentially responsible for protecting the country’s borders while facilitating trade and travel. Scott comes to the job firmly from the Border Patrol side of the house. He became an agent in 1992 and spent much of his career in San Diego. When he joined the agency, San Diego was by far the busiest corridor for illegal crossings. Traffic plummeted after the government dramatically increased enforcement there, but critics note the effort pushed people to remote parts of California and Arizona. San Diego was also where wall construction began in the 1990s, which shaped Scott’s belief that barriers work. He was named San Diego sector chief in 2017. He does know these issues and obviously is trusted by the administration,” said Gil Kerlikowske, the CBP commissioner under the Obama administration.
