KEARNEYSVILLE - Keep Going K9s, headquartered in Kearneysville, has a mission to “champion the unwavering spirit of our nation’s heroes, walking hand in leash towards a new dawn of hope and healing by uniting them with life-changing service dogs.” The organization trains dogs to serve as companions to veterans first responders and others in need of a canine to assist with any number of needs. Officially opened as a 501c3 organization in 2023, Keep Going K9s helps provide a service for which there is a great need. “In this area, there are not a lot of great outlets for vets as far as service dogs,” said trainer Chloe Anderson. “We want to fill the gap to give veterans what they need in a timely manner,” she continued. Providing canine companions is at the heart of the organization, where service dogs are meticulously matched with veterans and first responders according to their needs. The dogs are trained in a variety of ways to provide the needed support for those suffering such things as PTSD, vision impairment and additional health-related issues. The training and education workshops provide both the dogs and their handlers with essential training in obedience and specialized tasks. Anderson, who is vision-impaired, shared that her dog, Thumper, a Great Dane, is trained to protect her from potential dangers that she may not see including instances of crossing streets. Thumper stands and blocks Anderson’s path so that she is stopped from making a wrong move. The training process begins with puppies and can take from one to three years, depending upon the dog and the needs. Keep Going K9s provides the dogs to the veterans following a screening and interview process. Specific training is added if needed in addition to basic obedience and general training. All dogs and training come at no cost to the veteran. Donations are encouraged to ensure that dogs are available for every veteran in need. To donate, one can visit the Keep Going K9 website at keepgoingk9s.org . Currently Keep Going K9s is searching for volunteers to help in their organization in such areas as puppy raising or simply playing with the puppies. Volunteer opportunities are highlighted on the organization’s website where one can complete initial applications to serve. “All our dogs love love,” Anderson said. “Basically, a lot of the volunteering is playing with puppies to socialize them,” she added. Volunteer roles in canine training, kennel care and administrative duties are also available. The Los Angeles Dodgers have long been connected to star Milwaukee Brewers shortstop Willy Adames. There were even a few rumors during the 2024 season that suggested the two sides could swing a trade to send Adames to Los Angeles. Ultimately, the Brewers held onto him and he's now a free agent, which means the Dodgers can take their shot at him. But Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic doesn't think the fit is as perfect as it seems. In fact, Rosenthal mentioned moving Mookie Betts, who's already coming back to the infield, to shortstop and calling it a day. "Friedman has long admired Adames, whom he acquired for the (Tampa Bay) Rays at the 2014 trade deadline as part of a package for David Price," Rosenthal wrote. "But Friedman rarely pays sticker price for elite talent, with Yoshinobu Yamamoto standing as a notable exception last offseason, in part because he was turning 25. Lest anyone forget, the Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman contracts all include significant deferrals." Maybe Rosenthal has a point. The Dodgers are rumored to be in on some of the biggest free agents of the offseason, but maybe Adames isn't one of them. Slotting Betts back in at shortstop works perfectly. It would also save a lot of money to spend elsewhere. The Dodgers could use the money saved on Adames to bring in another ace, say, Corbin Burnes or Blake Snell, to pair alongside Shohei Ohtani at the top of their rotation. The ruling party pushed through a constitutional reform in September to make all federal judges stand for election, replacing the system where court employees and lawyers mainly move up through the ranks. Current court employees and their supporters have staged dozens of demonstrations against the reforms, calling them part of a ruling-party campaign to weaken checks and balances and eliminate independent regulatory and oversight bodies. Now, candidates for Supreme Court seats and federal judgeships need only a law degree, a grade point average of 3.2, “five years of professional experience” and five letters of recommendation from neighbors or friends. That, and some luck in the final drawing. Officials rejected criticism that has called the process rushed or amateurish for the often highly technical posts that can hear cases including intellectual property, organized crime and Constitutional law. “The results have been spectacular,” said Arturo Zaldivar, a top advisor to President Claudia Sheinbaum. According to the plan, evaluation committees will have just over a month to review thousands of resumes and whittle the field to about 10 candidates or less for each for the 881 judgeships and nine seats on the Supreme Court. Then 1,793 names chosen at random from those selected will appear on the ballot on June 1. Critics warn that many who land on the ballot will be unknowns who perhaps have never argued a case in the courts they seek to run. “You don’t elect a doctor or a surgeon for an operation based on their popularity, you elect them based on their technical expertise, their ability, their knowledge,” said Sergio Méndez Silva, the legal coordinator for the civic group Foundation for Justice. “That also applies for a judge.” With candidates now having to run election campaigns, critics warn there's a chance drug cartels or political parties could finance them to get friendly judges onto the bench. There are also concerns that the evaluation committees deciding who makes the cut for the selection to appear on ballots may not be impartial. Most committee members were appointed by the legislative or executive branches, controlled by the ruling Morena party. Some critics argue that the current justice system, which is riddled with nepotism, corruption and a lack of accountability, needs to be changed. “We need a justice system that gives results,” said Martínez Garza, an academic and former head of the human rights commission in the northern border state of Nuevo Leon who has registered to run for a Supreme Court seat. Trials in Mexico can last for years, and the ruling party has added to the growing list of crimes for which bail is not allowed, meaning that a large percentage of the prison population is people awaiting trial.Finalists revealed in the GP of the Year Award

Angel N. Newberry, 18, of Twin Falls was taken into custody by the Blackfoot Police Department on November 21 for reportedly leaving a newborn girl in the box at the Grove Creek Medical Center in Blackfoot. While the baby girl was removed from the box 'within a minute' of the clinic receiving the alarm on October 13, staffers soon realized that the newborn had been dead long before being left. 'The medical team removed the infant from the bassinet within a minute. Upon removal, they quickly realized that the infant had passed away long before being placed in the baby box. 'The Safe Haven Law in Idaho allows for the surrender of an infant who is unharmed and healthy. Therefore, this was not a legal surrender under state law as it does not meet the criteria for Safe Haven surrender,' a Safe Haven news release reads. Monica Kelsey, the founder of Safe Haven Baby Boxes, said in a social media post at the time: 'We are heartbroken. Anonymity is only allowed when an infant is safely surrendered completely unharmed.' Since being launched in 2016, Safe Haven Baby Boxes have provided parents a discreet and secure option to surrender their newborns. Angel N.
