background slot game Trump's pick to lead DEA withdraws saying he will remain a sheriffCOSTCO has promised continued deals through a hidden membership opportunity shoppers might not know about. The exclusive offering was recently highlighted by the warehouse retailer's CEO, Ron Vachris. Vachris explained that the "benefits" would come from Costco Next , a direct-to-consumer (DTC) program with discounts just for members that include only merchandise highly reviewed by previous buyers. To become a member at Costco and take advantage of Costco Next, you must purchase one of two membership options — Gold Star or Executive. Gold Star is the base level membership for a fee of $65 annually, and Executive comes with extra benefits and bonuses for $130 per year. Costco Next was first introduced in 2017 but later expanded in 2021, per Food & Wine . Read More on Costco Costco Next effectively helps members get connected with its suppliers by purchasing products they want directly through their websites. They still get the Costco prices, though. "Costco Next is our marketplace," Vachris noted during a recent earnings call . "This is an exclusive Costco member-only marketplace." Most read in Money "It's fully curated by our buyers, so everything that's on the site has been reviewed by our buyers but is exclusive to Costco members," he added. The CEO said Costco made the move to continue improving the connection between it and its members. "So, we think it's just going to enhance the relationship we have with our members and give more options for their shopping needs," he told investors. While Costco Next remains a smaller portion of the warehouse retailer's operations, it is growing in popularity. OUTLOOK BRIGHT Costco seeks to continue expanding its e-commerce presence along with its in-person shopping experiences, and Costco Next is assisting that goal. CFO Gary Millerchip said on the call that the marketplace even "achieved record sales over the Thanksgiving, Black Friday, and Cyber Monday sales period" this year. Costco has strict rules for membership use that shoppers must follow and they've been cracking down on offenders in recent years. Primary Member Use : Only the primary cardholder can use this Costco membership card. Sharing it for purchases is not allowed as the photo on the card must match the person using it. Household Card : Each primary member can add one free household cardholder who lives at the same address. This person will receive their own membership card and can shop at Costco independently. Guest Policy : Members can bring up to two guests per visit to Costco. However, only the member can make purchases. Guests must be accompanied by the member. Authorized Cardholder : For an additional fee, you can add an authorized cardholder, such as a family member or friend, who doesn't reside at your address. They will receive their own card and can shop independently. Credit: Costco "To use a baseball analogy, we are very much in the early innings with retail media, but we continue to believe this represents a significant growth opportunity in the future," Millerchip said. The CFO also noted that suppliers were happy with the recent results of Costco Next. "Our retail media team is now working with over 25 suppliers who are eager to participate in our next wave of offsite campaigns," he said. VERIFICATION REQUIRED The positive outlook for Costco Next comes after the warehouse retailer faced some significant backlash over its membership-sharing crackdown in recent months. A new policy implemented earlier this summer has members stop at the entrance to scan their cards and have them matched with a photograph and government-issued ID to enter. Some members have claimed the new measure has caused long lines outside the front doors. "A line of 40 people was standing outside in 30-degree weather in East Peoria [Illinois]," someone wrote in a post on X this month. "Unacceptable service. May consider dropping for Sam's Club." Read More on The US Sun Others claimed the policy left them feeling "harassed" and demanded Costco make changes. The membership verification is required at checkout as well, leaving one customer crying that it was "too much." Costco has unveiled membership scanners at its store entrances. In August 2024, the retailer released a statement about the scanners on its website . "Over the coming months, membership scanning devices will be used at the entrance door of your local warehouse," it wrote. "Once deployed, prior to entering, all members must scan their physical or digital membership card by placing the barcode or QR Code against the scanner. "Guests must also be accompanied by a valid member for entry. "If you have any questions or concerns, there will always be an attendant at the door to assist you! "If your membership is inactive, expired, or you would like to sign up for a new membership, the attendant will ask that you stop by the membership counter prior to entering the warehouse to shop. "Additionally, if your membership card does not have a photo, please be prepared to show your valid photo ID. "We encourage you to stop by the membership counter to have a photo taken to have on your card."

DeSantis appointee says he won't help his elected replacement take officeFrom Juliana Taiwo-Obalonye, Abuja In response to former governor of Rivers State, Peter Odili, the minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, said that “an elder statesman should not be a trader and a sycophant all the time.” According Senior Special Assistant to the FCT Minister on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, Wike, who was speaking at the Special Thanksgiving Service organized by Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martin Chike Amaewhule, at the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Oro-Igwe/Eliogbolo Archdeaconry Church of the Holy Spirit, Eliozu Parish, Port Harcourt on Sunday, said it was unfortunate that somebody who is supposed to be seen as an elder statesman and called a father can reduce himself to a sycophant and a trader. He asked: “Must you be a trader all the time? As governor for eight years, what else are you looking for?” The Minister said: “You know, I didn’t want to say anything. But somebody called me last night, and told me what someone said in the social media. I said until I read it myself. This morning, I read in the newspapers, what our former Governor, Sir Dr Peter Odili said. “What did he say? He said that the present governor has been able to stop one man who wanted to convert Rivers State to his personal estate. “Between him and myself, who has turned Rivers State to his personal estate? His wife is a Chairman of Governing Council, his daughter is a commissioner, his other daughter is a judge and he is the general overseer. Who has now turned Rivers State to his private estate? I am sure if care is not taken, if there is a chance, he can even arrange a marriage for the governor. “It was his nephew, his late senior brother’s son that was recommended for commissioner. He took the slot and gave it to his own daughter. Someone who didn’t remember to stand for the son of his late elder brother, is that an elder statesman?” Wike added said it was painful that Dr Odili, out of political sycophancy, has forgotten all that he said in the past, adding that; “All of you here remember when I was governor, this same Odili praised me to high heaven. In fact, he said then that all past governors in Rivers State combined did not do better than me. “In 2007 after he left office, he couldn’t come near power in the State because Amaechi was the governor then. He was gone! “Like somebody said that God will use someone to lift up someone. When I came in as governor in 2015, I won’t use the word resurrected, but I brought him back to life. “All of us know about PAMO University. But for us, there wouldn’t have been anything called PAMO University. Rivers State was sponsoring 100 students per session and for every semester, each of the students was paying nothing less than N5m. Then, Rivers people were attacking me up and down. “I personally called Julius Berger to build a mansion for him to live. He was calling everyone to the house then, telling them, come and see what Wike has done for me. Wike has shown me love. He was taking them round the house. “Now, because you have organized a Christmas Carol for the governor, I didn’t say you should not do your Christmas Carol. But why reduce yourself to such a laughing stock. People will still see it on television how he was telling the whole world then how God used me to bring him back to life politically. “Why not do your Christmas Carol, collect what you can collect and leave me alone? “The governor that all of us made has not spent one year in office and the same Odili was already saying that the governor has beaten the records of all the past governors of Rivers State. “When I was there, he said I had surpassed the records of all the past governors, including himself. What can he even show that he did in his eight years as governor? But a governor has not spent one year, you are saying he has done more than all the past governors. “You spent eight years as governor and someone who hasn’t spent one year has surpassed your records, what manner of elder talk like that? Is that what an elder statesman should be known for? “When I was governor, my pictures were everywhere in his house. Sitting room, bedroom, kitchen, even in the toilet, my picture was everywhere. But today, all the pictures have been removed.” Asking what can be learned from such a sycophantic elder statesman, Wike said; “What can I learn from this kind of elder? What kind of advice can one get from him. This moment you are saying something, the next moment you are saying something else. “You see, if your children begin to ask you, is this not the same man you were praising before? What would you tell them?” On the State governorship issue, the Minister asked; “When I was plotting who will be governor after me, was he (Odili) there? Then, he was complaining about this governor, saying that he couldn’t stand before the public to talk. But today, he is organizing Christmas Carol for the same governor he was against then. “He has forgotten all that he said in the past. I named this after you, I named that after your wife. What have I not done? “You said we should not be part of the government, we have left. We are managing, you have taken assembly money, they are not dying of hunger and they will not die of hunger. We are okay. I’m focusing on my job in Abuja and all these sycophancy won’t take him to the level I have attained. “This is a man who wanted to run for president then, he didn’t have the balls, he chickened out. Simply because Obasanjo said no, he will not contest, he ran away. Because of him, I never invited Obasanjo to Rivers State to commission projects. I felt it will humiliate him.”

This yearly tournament includes a total of 64 girls and boys teams from all over B.C., with this year's batch of teams including several from Abbotsford. Only boys teams will be competing from Abbotsford, with the local squads including the MEI Eagles, Yale Lions, and Rick Hansen Hurricanes. These three teams will try to carve out some success in the field of 32 teams, with MEI hoping to claim the title after they fell just short last year and finished in second place. Tournament organizer and namesake Howard Tsumura explained that creating a tournament of this scale is not something that comes easy, but is incredibly important to him. "The annual Tsumura Basketball Invitational tournaments are an absolute labour of love for me, something that both I and the dedicated tournament committee here at Langley Events Centre have been working on since the middle of this past March," said Tsumura. The boys portion of the tournament tips off on Dec. 4 and runs until Dec. 7. Meanwhile, the girls will take over the court the following week from Dec. 11 to 14. The Golden State Valkyries will be selecting Kate Martin and Kayla Thornton in the 2025 WNBA expansion draft , a source briefed on the decision told The Athletic . The full results of the draft will be announced Friday at 6:30 p.m. ET on ESPN. Per the rules outlined by the league and the collective bargaining agreement for the expansion draft, the 12 current WNBA franchises are allowed to protect six players. The Valkyries are then able to choose one unprotected player from each team; that can be a player on the active roster, a player who the organization has draft rights to, or is on their international rights list. Advertisement Martin will arguably be the most popular player taken by Golden State Friday. The 2024 rookie out of Iowa, where she helped Caitlin Clark lead the Hawkeyes to two consecutive trips to the national title game, had a strong start to her first WNBA season. As the Las Vegas Aces dealt with the absence of Chelsea Gray , Martin averaged 19.3 minutes over her first ten games and made 37 percent of her 3-pointers. However, Martin saw less court time as the Aces returned to full health, cracking double-digit minutes only twice in the second half of the season. Her postseason minutes consisted of one appearance in a blowout. Las Vegas was always going to protect its core four of A’ja Wilson , Kelsey Plum , Jackie Young , and Gray in the draft, but Martin could have been one of the final two players. Instead, Martin will start the second chapter of her WNBA career with the Valkyries, and the expansion team will benefit from the three remaining cost-controlled seasons on her rookie deal. The New York Liberty had to make some of the toughest decisions league-wide thanks to the depth of their roster. The reigning champions had to prioritize their full starting lineup and Nyara Sabally , who was the X-factor in Game 5 of the WNBA Finals. That left their entire international list — including Marine Johannès and Han Xu — exposed, as well as critical bench players. Golden State is electing to take one of those veteran reserves in Kayla Thornton, a player who general manager Ohemaa Nyanin is intimately familiar with, as Nyanin was the assistant GM in New York prior to joining the Valkyries. Thornton appeared in every playoff game for the Liberty during their title run, averaging the second-most minutes (12.5) among bench players. Her best peformance of the postseason came in Game 2 of the semifinals against Las Vegas, when she was a game-best plus-13 and helped New York take a commanding 2-0 lead in the series. Golden State will be the fourth stop in Thornton’s WNBA career, and the 32-year-old veteran has one year remaining on a contract extension she signed with the Liberty in 2023. Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister has withdrawn his nomination to lead the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) under President-elect Donald Trump . In a statement shared on social media Tuesday, Chronister expressed gratitude for being nominated by President-elect Donald Trump, calling it "the honor of a lifetime." However, he said the gravity of the position led him to conclude that he should remain focused on serving the citizens of Hillsborough County. "Over the past several days, as the gravity of this very important responsibility set in, I've concluded that I must respectfully withdraw from consideration," Chronister wrote. "There is more work to be done for the citizens of Hillsborough County and a lot of initiatives I am committed to fulfilling," he added. Chronister did not elaborate, and Trump's transition team did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment from Newsweek . To have been nominated by President-Elect @realDonaldTrump to serve as Administrator of the Drug Enforcement Administration is the honor of a lifetime. Over the past several days, as the gravity of this very important responsibility set in, I’ve concluded that I must respectfully... pic.twitter.com/bvNF8m9Bh4 Chronister faced strong opposition from conservative lawmakers like Kentucky Rep. Thomas Massie and Texas Rep. Chip Roy over his actions during the COVID-19 pandemic. In March 2020, he ordered the arrest of Pastor Rodney Howard-Browne for holding in-person church services in violation of lockdown orders. On Saturday, Trump announced plans to nominate Chronister to run the DEA. But the move sparked backlash from some of the businessman-turned-politician's biggest backers, including Republican colleagues and followers within the Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement. Republican Congressman Thomas Massie , who represents a district in Kentucky, to o k to X to say : "I'm going to call 'em like I see 'em. Trump's nominee for head of DEA should be disqualified for ordering the arrest a pastor who defied COVID lockdowns." Some X users, who identified themselves as "MAGA" in their profiles, were equally outraged. "Totally makes him unqualified. Yuck!" one wrote. Another added: "No Covid nazis allowed anywhere in the administration. Automatic disqualification." The backlash from conservatives stemmed for his perceived, progressive stances. In 2018, Chronister became the first Hillsborough County Sheriff to join the Tampa Pride Parade and later launched the agency's LGBTQ Liaison program. Additionally, his support for red flag laws, which allow the temporary removal of firearms from individuals deemed a threat, sparked criticism from gun rights advocates. Trump has been busy assembling his cabinet and filling top agency roles ahead of his return to the White House in January. Most of the positions were filled by last week , with political analysts and voters split in terms of their opinions on Trump's choices . But Trump's choice of Chronister for the DEA prompted pushback, even amongst the president-elect's biggest fans. Chronister follows former Republican congressman Matt Gaetz , Trump's first pick to serve as attorney general, in withdrawing his name for a post in the administration. Gaetz withdrew following scrutiny over a federal sex trafficking investigation that cast doubt on his ability to be confirmed as the nation's chief federal law enforcement officer. The DEA post requires Senate confirmation. Reflecting on this chapter, Gregg didn't mince words, calling it a "huge mistake" and sharing that it was a low point in his life despite Heidi's rapport with his children from his second marriage to Denise Lovall. After splitting from Heidi, Gregg had a string of romances with stunning women, which prompted a stern warning from his therapist. In an interview with the Daily Mail , Gregg confessed that following another failed marriage, he sought out partners who made him feel like a million bucks - like cruising in his Jaguar with the roof down. However, his therapist cautioned him against treating partners like cars. In 2021, Gregg revealed: "The reason I had so many girlfriends was that I was always looking for somebody. I think it's an absolute game of chance. What are the chances of finding somebody who you're not only attracted to and makes you feel comfortable and happy, but is actually looking for what you have to offer?" Luckily, fate intervened when he met his now-wife Anna on Twitter in 2013, bonding over a conversation about rhubarb. During a January appearance on Good Morning Britain , Wallace gushed about Anna's life-changing impact, saying: "That young woman has revolutionised my life, there's a 22-year age gap, we have been together 10 years and have a son, Sid, and I want to be there for them." The family, including Anna's parents, Rina and Massimo, live together in his £1million Kent mansion, where they all pitch in with household chores, often have tea together, and even help care for Sid, giving Gregg and Anna a much-needed break. Gregg got real about family life in a heartfelt chat with The Telegraph, saying: "I'm a much better father now I'm older, although another child isn't something that I would have chosen at my age. I have always been very honest with Anna, but it's what she wants and I love her. I just requested two things – that we had help in the house (so her mum moved in), and secondly, that we had at least one week a year when we holidayed just the two of us."
