After a far-right pro-Russia candidate secured a surprise lead in Romania's presidential election Monday, the eastern European NATO member is bracing for a high-stakes parliamentary vote on Sunday, amid fears it could bring about a strategic shift in the country. Calin Georgescu was in pole position with almost 23 percent after the first round of voting, a political earthquake in the country of 19 million people that has so far resisted nationalist appeals that have gained traction in Hungary and Slovakia. His victory ahead of centre-right mayor Elena Lasconi -- who scored 19.18 percent -- ended the hopes of Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu to compete for the presidency in the December runoff. After coming third at 19.15, Ciolacu said his Social Democratic Party (PSD) won't challenge the narrow result, and announced his resignation as party leader. Experts say the far right's surprise success could affect the parliamentary elections later this week, and even influence the chances of forming a future government. - 'Existential battle' - In the runoff ballot on December 8, Lasconi will face Georgescu, a NATO critic who in the past expressed his admiration for Russian President Vladimir Putin. Georgescu's popularity surged ahead of the vote with a viral TikTok campaign calling for an end to aid for Ukraine, which shares a 650-kilometre (400-mile) border with Romania. In a first reaction on his YouTube channel, the 62-year-old independent candidate insisted "there is no East or West", stressing that neutrality was "absolutely necessary". "I am not an extremist, I am not a fascist -- I am a Romanian who loves his country," he said in reference to media reports that "tried to portray" him in a wrongful way. For his rival Lasconi, the upcoming runoff represents "an existential battle", "a historic confrontation" between those who wish to "preserve Romania's young democracy" and those who want to "return to the Russian sphere of influence". "We must not allow anger to throw us back into the past," she said to thunderous applause from her supporters, vowing to stand up for Europe and NATO. The political earthquake comes amid soaring inflation and mounting fears of Romania being potentially dragged into Russia's war in neighbouring Ukraine, as the country has emerged as a key player on the alliance's eastern flank. - 'Serious and patriotic' - In Sunday's vote, another far-right contender, AUR party leader George Simion, secured nearly 14 percent. Already pounding the campaign trail for this week's parliamentary elections, Simion said Romania now has "the chance to have a sovereign government and a sovereign president". Overall, the far right won more than a third of all votes in Sunday's presidential ballot. "The far right is by far the big winner of this election," political scientist Cristian Pirvulescu told AFP, predicting a possible "contagion effect" in the parliamentary vote. Extremist forces and Lasconi's centre-right party now have "wind in their sails", sociologist Gelu Duminica said, though "it remains to be seen if they know how to capitalise" on it. The PSD, which has shaped the country's politics for more than three decades, has never before been eliminated in the first round of a presidential election. The National Liberal Party (PNL) party, with whom the PSD currently governs, also suffered a defeat. While many expressed their disbelief over the poll in the streets of the capital Bucharest, others were enthused. Maria Chis, 70, said she was surprised by Georgescu's lead in the first round but had been impressed after watching his TikTok videos. "He seems a man of integrity, serious and patriotic. He inspires seriousness. I think only someone like him can bring change," said the pensioner, who was planning to vote for him in the second round. Alex Tudose, the owner of a construction company, was gloomy. "There is sorrow, disappointment, that after so many years in Euro-Atlantic structures we voted for a pro-Russian by over 20 percent," the 42-year-old said. "There is clearly a strong fragmentation both in society and in the political class, and I think we saw that yesterday," he said. ani-anb-kym/sbk Originally published as Romania braces for parliamentary vote after far right's poll upset More related stories National Cops probe woman’s mysterious death New details have emerged as a man faced court on a slew of violent charges just days after the body of a woman was discovered. Jaime Harrison, in a letter to members of the party’s powerful Rules & Bylaws Committee, outlined the process of how the party will elect its new chair. Harrison said in the letter that the committee will host four candidate forums — some in person and some virtually — in January, with the final election on Feb. 1 during the party’s winter meeting in National Harbor, Maryland. The race to become the next chair of the Democratic National Committee, while an insular party affair, will come days after Trump is inaugurated for a second term. Democrats' selection of a leader after Vice President Kamala Harris’ 2024 loss will be a key starting point as the party starts to move forward, including addressing any structural problems and determining how to oppose Trump. Members of the Rules & Bylaws Committee will meet on Dec. 12 to establish the rules for these elections, which beyond the chair position will include top party roles like vice chairs, treasurer, secretary and national finance chair. The committee will also use that meeting to decide the requirements for gaining access to the ballot for those top party roles. In 2021, candidates were required to submit a nominating statement that included signatures from 40 DNC members and that will likely be the same standard for the 2025 campaigns. “The DNC is committed to running a transparent, equitable, and impartial election for the next generation of leadership to guide the party forward,” Harrison said in a statement. “Electing the Chair and DNC officers is one of the most important responsibilities of the DNC Membership, and our staff will run an inclusive and transparent process that gives members the opportunity to get to know the candidates as they prepare to cast their votes.” Two Democrats have announced campaigns for chair: Ken Martin, chair of the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party and a vice chair of the national party, and Martin O’Malley, the former Maryland governor and current commissioner of the Social Security Administration. Other top Democrats are either considering a run to succeed Harrison or are being pushed by party insiders, including former Texas Rep. Beto O’Rourke; Michael Blake, a former vice chair of the party; Ben Wikler, chair of the Democratic Party of Wisconsin; Rahm Emanuel, the U.S. ambassador to Japan and a former Chicago mayor; Sen. Mallory McMorrow, majority whip of the Michigan Senate, and Chuck Rocha, a longtime Democratic strategist. The next chair of the committee will be tasked with rebuilding a party demoralized by a second Trump victory. They will also oversee the party’s 2028 nominating process, a complex and contentious exercise that will make the chair central to the next presidential election. Harrison, of South Carolina, made clear in his letter to the rules committee that the four forums hosted by the party would be live streamed and the party would give grassroots Democrats across the country the ability to engage with the process through those events. He also said he intends to remain neutral during the chair election. ___ This story has been corrected to show that McMorrow is a senator, not a representative.Woodys Mobile Brakes: Redefining Convenience in Brake Repair Services 12-25-2024 09:48 PM CET | Business, Economy, Finances, Banking & Insurance Press release from: ABNewswire Woodys Mobile Brakes When it comes to vehicle safety, few systems are as critical as your brakes. Login or signup to continue reading Large sections of Fennell Bay and Belair public schools have been fenced for months as education and health authorities deal with the Earlier this month, the Glendale Holy Cross Primary School closed its gates for a week and moved its 150 students to another school after lead-contaminated soil was found in the school's playing area. Fennell Bay Public School - on the west side of Lake Macquarie - has been on the NSW Environmental Protection Authority's contaminated sites list since early 2021, when lead-contaminated soil - also known as 'black slag' - was discovered. The area was fenced off when soil testing confirmed the presences of residual lead-containing material in several small pockets across 6800 square metres of the school's playing field. Black slag is the product of the former Pasminco smelter, and from 1960 to 1995 more than two million tonnes of it was used throughout Lake Macquarie for landscaping. The EPA an initial assessment by its officers showed the "risk of exposure to students and the community was minimal". A NSW Department of Education spokesperson said half of the affected site had been remediated and re-opened to students in early 2024, and the school community had been regularly informed as the work progressed. The remainder of the remediation work is out for tender, with full remediation expected to be complete in the first half of 2025. "As a precaution, the department had open space areas at Fennell Bay Public School fenced off and made inaccessible," a department spokesperson said. "All remediation works to date has been undertaken in accordance with SafeWork NSW regulations, and completed by licensed and accredited contractors and monitored by occupational hygienists." Belair Public School, in Adamstown Heights, where in-ground asbestos containing material was discovered in March, 2023. About a quarter of the school grounds has been fenced off, or roughly 7000 square metres, since the "fragments of asbestos containing material" were found on the southern end of the grassed playground. The remediation is being managed by School Infrastructure NSW (SINSW), who said air monitoring data across the site had "returned results below the minimum detectable limit". "In this case the evidence and advice from our hygienist is that there is not airborne asbestos in this area," SINSW said in a statement. The next stage of remediation work to remove the hazardous material due to start during the upcoming summer school holidays, while landscaping and construction work will continue into term one of 2025. The work includes tearing up the cricket pitch, playground, concrete footpath and removing multiple trees. "The school holidays are the ideal time for a lot of maintenance and project work to take place in schools across the state without disrupting learning," SINSW said. "We appreciate that work being carried out at Belair Public School is taking longer than anticipated however, the work is being done carefully and methodically." A NSW Department of Education spokesperson said the health, safety and wellbeing of students and staff was its highest priority. Newcastle Herald news director and business reporter. WASHINGTON (AP) — One year after the , U.S. Capitol attack, Attorney General Merrick Garland the Justice Department was committed to holding accountable all perpetrators “at any level” for “the assault on our democracy.” That bold declaration won't apply to at least one person: Donald Trump. Special counsel Jack Smith's move on Monday to abandon the against Trump means jurors will likely never decide whether the president-elect is criminally responsible for his attempts to cling to power after losing the 2020 campaign. The decision to walk away from the election charges and the separate against Trump marks an abrupt end of the Justice Department’s unprecedented legal effort that once threatened his liberty but appears only to have galvanized his supporters. The abandonment of the cases accusing Trump of endangering American democracy and national security does away with the most serious legal threats he was facing as he returns to the White House. It was the culmination of a monthslong defense effort to delay the proceedings at every step and use the criminal allegations to Trump's political advantage, putting the final word in the hands of voters instead of jurors. “We always knew that the rich and powerful had an advantage, but I don’t think we would have ever believed that somebody could walk away from everything,” said Stephen Saltzburg, a George Washington University law professor and former Justice Department official. “If there ever was a Teflon defendant, that’s Donald Trump.” While prosecutors left the door open to the possibility that federal charges could be re-filed against Trump after he leaves office, that seems unlikely. Meanwhile, Trump's presidential victory has thrown into question the future of the two state criminal cases against him in New York and Georgia. Trump was supposed to be sentenced on Tuesday after his , but it's possible the sentencing could be delayed until after Trump leaves office, and the defense is pushing to dismiss the case altogether. Smith's team stressed that their decision to abandon the federal cases was not a reflection of the merit of the charges, but an acknowledgement that they could not move forward under longstanding Justice Department policy that says sitting presidents cannot face Trump's presidential victory set “at odds two fundamental and compelling national interests: On the one hand, the Constitution’s requirement that the President must not be unduly encumbered in fulfilling his weighty responsibilities . . . and on the other hand, the Nation’s commitment to the rule of law,” prosecutors wrote in court papers. The move just weeks after Trump's victory over Vice President Kamala Harris underscores the immense personal stake Trump had in the campaign in which he turned his legal woes into a political rallying cry. Trump accused prosecutors of bringing the charges in a bid to keep him out of the White House, and he promised revenge on his perceived enemies if he won a second term. “If Donald J. Trump had lost an election, he may very well have spent the rest of his life in prison,” Vice President-elect JD Vance, wrote in a social media post on Monday. “These prosecutions were always political. Now it’s time to ensure what happened to President Trump never happens in this country again.” After the Jan. 6 attack by Trump supporters that left more than 100 police officers injured, Republican leader Mitch McConnell and several other Republicans said it was up to the justice system to hold Trump accountable. The Jan. 6 case brought last year in Washington alleged an increasingly desperate criminal conspiracy to subvert the will of voters after Trump's 2020 loss, accusing Trump of using the angry mob of supporters that attacked the Capitol as “a tool” in his campaign to pressure then-Vice President and obstruct the certification of Democrat Joe Biden's victory. Hundreds of Jan. 6 rioters — many of whom have said they felt called to Washington by Trump — have pleaded guilty or been convicted by juries of federal charges at the same courthouse where Trump was supposed to stand trial last year. As the trial date neared, officials at the courthouse that sits within view of the Capitol were busy making plans for the crush of reporters expected to cover the historic case. But Trump's argument that he from prosecution quickly tied up the case in appeals all the way up to the Supreme Court. The high court ruled in July that , and sent the case back to the trial court to decide which allegations could move forward. But the case was dismissed before the trial court could got a chance to do so. The other indictment brought in Florida accused Trump of at his Mar-a-Lago estate sensitive documents on nuclear capabilities, enlisting aides and lawyers to help him hide records demanded by investigators and cavalierly showing off a Pentagon “plan of attack” and classified map. But U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon . Smith appealed to the Atlanta-based 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, but abandoned that appeal on Monday. Smith's team said it would continue its fight in the appeals court to revive charges against Trump's two co-defendants because “no principle of temporary immunity applies to them.” In New York, jurors spent weeks last spring hearing evidence in a state case alleging a Trump scheme to illegally influence the 2016 election through who said the two had sex. New York prosecutors recently expressed openness to delaying sentencing until after Trump's second term, while Trump's lawyers are fighting to have the conviction dismissed altogether. In Georgia, a trial while Trump is in office seems unlikely in a state case charging him and more than a dozen others with conspiring to overturn his 2020 election loss in the state. The case has been on hold since an appeals court agreed to review whether to remove Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis over her with the special prosecutor she had hired to lead the case. Associated Press reporter Lisa Mascaro in Washington contributed.ChatGPT was born two years ago amid a flurry of hyperbolic hype, skepticism, and outright fear. The AI chatbot didn't immediately guide us to digital heaven, take over every job, or become sentient and send robots with Austrian accents after us, but ChatGPT has a made major impact on many people's lives nonetheless. For ChatGPT's second birthday, I've collected some of the most notable (if not always most noble) ways OpenAI 's experiment with a digital sidekick has changed day-to-day living for many people. I should say that while I did ask ChatGPT for examples of how it's changed the world, the AI either was self-deprecating about how it hasn't done so or insisted that everyone's lives are radically altered by its presence in ways that resemble the Matrix films more than reality. Still, even if you aren't one who employs the AI chatbot for all of the following examples, I'd bet you know someone who has at least experimented with doing so. Here are five ways ChatGPT has become a part of people's lives, large and small: Homework Houdini Teachers and school administrators quickly noted what ChatGPT could mean for students. Lazy students might ignore hallucinations or awful phrasing to turn in terrible papers, but those were easy to weed out and give an F. More clever students could enhance their work and research with ChatGPT and not always be caught. OpenAI quickly partnered with educational organizations to try and come up with useful ways to deploy the AI chatbot, with fun studying tools and helpful guides to complex subjects. But, arguably, the bigger impact was changing how teachers do their lessons. Some have relied on extra strict rules for using ChatGPT, while others have replaced essays with oral reports or projects where students can't rely on ChatGPT to do everything for them. Thanks to ChatGPT, homework is disappearing. ChefGPT Some have always known how to transform whatever's in the freezer and cabinet into a culinary delight, but for others, ChatGPT has become a go-to resource for figuring out our meals. ChatGPT has given everyone the option to describe whatever is in the pantry, and later on, just upload a photo of what's available to get a list of ideas for dishes, recipe included. Or maybe you saw something on a cooking show you'd like to try but altered for your taste or dietary restrictions; the AI chatbot has you covered. With the caveat that you want to make sure it hasn't hallucinated anything dangerous, you can quickly be on your way to a delicious dinner. And your AI sous-chef is on standby if you mess up along the way. DIY coding buddy Once upon a time, wannabe coders had to scour GitHub for projects, templates, and snippets to Frankenstein their way through building an app or website. Now, many are turning to ChatGPT as their go-to coding companion. Why sift through repositories when you can ask ChatGPT to “write a Python script to rename 1,000 files in a folder” or “explain recursion like I’m five”? It’s fast, straightforward, and skips the endless GitHub rabbit holes. Get the best Black Friday deals direct to your inbox, plus news, reviews, and more. You don’t have to be a tech wizard to get started; it’s like having a patient (and absurdly knowledgeable) teacher who can explain code, debug errors, or even write entire functions from scratch. Of course, that leaves the collaborative community of GitHub stranded. Open-source projects on GitHub aren’t just about copying and pasting—they’re about learning from others, contributing to shared goals, and understanding best practices. ChatGPT doesn’t teach you why a line of code works; it just makes sure it does. That’s great for convenience but not so great for developing deeper programming skills or giving back to the broader developer ecosystem. Imagination on screen Gone are the days when creating stunning visuals required years of practice or pricey software. With ChatGPT’s image generation, anyone can produce intricate artwork, design concepts, or even memes in minutes. Aspiring artists are using it to brainstorm ideas, and people are bringing their imagination to life, which is wonderful in many ways. That said, AI-generated images are also likely to cause debates or outright fights if you aren't careful. Does AI-generated art devalue other kinds of visual creation or simply make it more accessible? Is it an homage or theft of your favorite artist's creation? No matter how you feel about it, it has made the posting of any image a lot more fraught than it used to be. Cyrano AI ChatGPT changed how people talk to each other. South Park wrote an entire episode (aided by ChatGPT) about kids using the AI chatbot to figure out how to respond to romantic partners. Satirical though that take may have been, it has a reality to it as well. Plenty of people have asked the AI for help navigating social and romantic situations. It's like having Cyrano de Bergerac in your pocket, minus the tragic ending and excessive ruffles. ChatGPT has served as an interpreter for cryptic messages and broken down how to end things with someone you aren't into without causing a scene. It used to be that a text you sent would be seen and discussed by all of the recipient's friends. Now, you have to consider that it will be analyzed by an AI confidant as well. It's not just romance, either. The AI offers everything from ideas on how to dress for a party to good icebreakers at a networking event. ChatGPT coded a game for me in seconds and I am simply astounded – and coders should be very worried ChatGPT's new 'Canvas' is the AI collaborator you didn't know you needed ChatGPT o1-preview can solve riddles faster than me and I kind of hate it for it ChatGPT's 4o-mini model just got a big upgrade – here are 4 of the best new features

2030 Project Fast Grant awards support energy systems of the futureHumans have been trying to draw power from the ocean’s waves since 1799 , and for good reason: the energy potential of waves off the U.S. coastline is estimated at 2.64 trillion kilowatt hours , or roughly 63% of U.S. electricity generation. And perhaps since the time of the Romans, humans have stored water at high tides to drive tidal mills, the earliest form of tidal energy harvesting. Technology improvements and the climate crisis have sparked renewed interest in these ideas, and two Cornell faculty members have received Fast Grants to study ocean wave and tidal energy projects in Oregon and New York, respectively. Six projects focused on energy systems of the future have been awarded a total of $147,130 from The 2030 Project: A Cornell Climate Initiative. This is the third year that the project, housed within the Cornell Atkinson Center for Sustainability, has awarded Fast Grants to researchers across the university who are pioneering new concepts or partnering with industry, government and nonprofits to develop or scale projects. “The 2030 project is built around four key themes: materials of the future, energy systems of the future, food and farms of the future, and societies and policies of the future,” said Ben Furnas ’06, executive director of The 2030 Project. “This year we chose to focus our grant solicitation on impact-oriented climate research around energy systems. We were pleased to receive proposals from a wide variety of disciplines because social scientists and physical scientists may think about these problems in different ways and contribute interesting and important insights into how we develop the energy systems of the future.” Edwin “Todd” Cowen , professor of civil and environmental engineering, and Seth Schweitzer , research associate in civil and environmental engineering, are partnering with a team of Cornell researchers and At-Sea Development , a private company working to build a 100-megawatt tidal energy project in Long Island Sound, NY. When built, the project would deliver clean energy to New York City and downstate New York, where energy is currently 95% fossil fuel-based, Cowen said. “Generating renewable electricity for New York City and downstate is highly desirable to meet environmental and human health goals and mandates, but is very challenging due to dense development and constraints on energy transmission, distribution and storage,” Cowen said. “Tidal power has the potential to play a unique role in the transition to a zero-carbon electric grid as, unlike wind and solar, it is a highly predictable renewable energy resource,” Schweitzer said. Maha Haji , assistant professor in the Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, is partnering with colleagues at Oregon State University to improve conversion of wave energy into power production. Oregon State began construction this summer of a new wave energy testing facility off the coast of Newport, OR. One of the key project aims is to develop and test innovative designs that can pull energy from multiple types of wave movement. The project will also study wave energy converter farms to understand the influence of constructive and destructive interference between devices on power production. Initial research for this project supported two students through a Cornell Atkinson Summer Undergraduate Mentored Research Grant. “Our goal is to improve wave farm design and modeling techniques, to accelerate the field toward larger-scale experiments and deployment in oceans,” Haji said. Other projects that received Fast Grants this year will explore: Green hydrogen. Green hydrogen is created by using wind or solar power to generate electricity, which is then used to split water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen. The resulting “green hydrogen” can be used in fuel cells to generate energy or to store energy, which can help compensate for the intermittent nature of wind and solar. Geoffrey Coates , Tisch University Professor of chemistry and chemical biology, seeks to develop new polymer membranes that will improve stability and conductivity in green hydrogen technologies. Cooling textiles. Heat waves have caused more fatalities in the United States than any other weather-related event, and in the past 30 years as the climate has warmed, heat-related deaths in the U.S. have more than doubled . Larissa Shepherd , assistant professor of human centered design, will build on a fabric surface modification plasma technique she and her group have developed to create radiative passive cooling textiles from natural fibers that can be used in indoor and outdoor spaces and in clothing. She will test the scale-up of these cooling textiles with industry partners. Energy efficiency in large-scale computing. The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence is consuming huge amounts of energy. One major area of inefficiency is communication bottlenecks between graphics processing units (GPUs), leaving GPUs idle for large percentages of the time and wasting energy in data centers. Rachee Singh , assistant professor of computer science, and Emaad Manzoor , assistant professor of marketing, will design light-based, optical network fabrics that enable faster communication between GPUs and bypass bottlenecks caused by slower electrical connections. Developing catalysts for carbon emission reduction. Energy conversion strategies, like splitting water into clean hydrogen or carbon dioxide conversion into liquid fuels, require efficient catalysts to speed electrochemical reactions. Electrochemical reduction of CO2 is especially important for global researchers interested in capturing and reusing CO2. Yao Yang , assistant professor of chemistry and chemical biology, seeks to design a family of nano-scale catalysts that could drive CO2 reduction reactions, and record reactions in real-time using advanced electron microscopes. He will collaborate with Erik Thiede , assistant professor of chemistry and chemical biology, to develop machine learning algorithms to uncover hidden features of those catalysts. Simon Haberle, academic at the Australian National University and director of Canberra Pollen , said the grass pollen season started two weeks earlier than normal. This is a warning of the allergy season to come as Mr Haberle predicts an "average to above average season as we move forward". "People are going to be feeling the impact of that," he said. Mr Haberle said Canberrans should be particularly aware because the city is "the hotspot for hay fever sufferers in Australia". He said this is because of its geographic position and its proximity to pollen-producing vegetation. "We're not next to the ocean, we're surrounded by grasslands and woodlands, so whichever direction the wind blows, there's potential for pollen to be dispersed across the city," the professor said. Chelsea Warren and 8-year-old Pembroke cool off over Canberra's hot weekend. Picture by Gary Ramage "When there's really strong northwesterly winds, which is common in the spring months, that can bring a lot of grass from some distance into the city." The ACT is in the midst of grass pollination season, which peaks in November. Combine that with an expected maximum of 33 degrees on Monday afternoon after a sweltering weekend and it's a rough recipe. According to the Bureau of Meteorology, maximum temperatures will hover around the 30-degree mark for the rest of the week as well. And Canberrans won't be waking up to the territory's usual cooler mornings, with lows of around 15 degrees in the final spring days set to match the rising heat. Mr Haberle said other subtropical grasses that grow around Canberra also tend to produce pollen in January and February. That'll likely mean a second wave of hay fever suffering in the 2025 mid-to-late summer period. Siblings Zoë Kennedy, 6, and Eamon Kennedy, 8, from Turner, cooling off in Lake Burley Griffin over the weekend. Picture by Gary Ramage The university professor explained how trees contribute to the pollen count, with many types each having their own flowering period, beginning as early as mid-July and lasting through to October. With the continued grass pollination throughout summer, there is only a small margin of time in the year with very little pollen in the air. "The rest of the time, somebody's going to be suffering," said Mr Haberle. For those who do suffer, he provided a range of preventative measures that combine medical and practical steps to help lessen symptoms. These include consulting your GP and pharmacist about the best medication for your individual needs, staying indoors as much as you can on high pollen count days, wearing a face mask when outside, and washing clothes - being sure not to hang them outside to collect pollen. He also recommended checking the Canberra Pollen app or website, which provides weekly and daily updates so hay fever sufferers can plan accordingly.
