Alex de Minaur is confident his injury woes are behind him, feeling he is in the best shape he has ever been ahead of the Australian Open . The world No.9 recaptured his fluid best at the first United Cup round in Sydney, putting on a commanding performance to beat Argentina’s Tomas Etcheverry 6-1 6-4 at Ken Rosewall Arena. De Minaur had been plagued by a hip injury in his breakout 2024 season suffered during his Wimbledon run in July. Know the news with the 7NEWS app: Download today The 25-year-old had risen as high as world No.6 after reaching the second week of every slam, including quarter-finals of the French Open, Wimbledon and US Open. Australia’s No.1 remained hindered by the troublesome hip while playing in the Davis Cup in November, but he now feels the worst is over having returned to Australia. “It’s definitely the best I felt since Wimbledon,” de Minaur said on Saturday. “Very happy with how the body’s moving, how it’s feeling. “It’s been a long time coming but it’s feeling the best shape it has been in a very, very long time.” De Minaur is primed to enjoy a rich vein of form heading into next month’s AO, having been the only Australian to claim a victory against Argentina in their first United Cup match. He put on a clinical performance against Etcheverry, claiming the first set within 28 minutes on his way to levelling the tie after teammate Olivia Gadecki lost 6-2 6-4 to Nadia Podoroska in the women’s single. “I was extremely pleased with my level (of performance). Being the first match of the new season, you never know what to expect,” de Minaur said. “Tommy, he’s a quality opponent, a very tough opponent, so I was happy in the way I executed today from the very start until the end. “It’s a very special court and a court that I love playing on, so I was very happy to be able to play the match today.” Australian captain Lleyton Hewitt said de Minaur “played fantastic tennis”. “He was very confident out there, right from the word go, played his Plan A out there, and executed incredibly well,” he said. “He played a faultless match, really.” In the women’s singles, emerging star Olivia Gadecki battled nerves and was broken in her opening game, before losing the first set. Cheered on by a boisterous home crowd in the second, the 22-year-old looked ready to mount a comeback after launching ahead 4-3 but was ultimately undone by her errors in the 88-minute contest. “I thought Olivia got better as the match went on,” Hewitt said. “If we could have snuck out the second set and taken it to a deciding, I think she would have got better throughout the third set.” Argentina secured the 2-1 win thanks to a strong performance from Etcheverry and Maria Carle against Matt Ebden and Ellen Perez, the South American pair claiming a 6-2 6-4 result. Australia return to the court on New Year’s Day when they face a Great Britain outfit including Billy Harris and de Minaur’s fiancee Katie Boulter.

Global stock markets mostly retreated Tuesday as traders eyed looming US inflation data and a key European interest rate call amid global political upheaval. After winning numerous records in the weeks since the November 5 US presidential election, US stocks fell for the second straight day as analysts pointed to profit-taking. But Alphabet jumped more than five percent after Google showed off a new quantum computing chip that it described as a significant breakthrough in the field, arguing it could lead to advances in drug discovery, fusion energy and other areas. The Paris stock market retreated as French party leaders gathered at President Emmanuel Macron's Elysee Palace office to chart a route towards a new government. The euro also fell ahead of the European Central Bank's monetary policy meeting on Thursday. The ECB is expected to lower interest rates by 25 basis points amid weak eurozone growth. Independent analyst Andreas Lipkow said traders were taking a cautious approach ahead of the ECB meeting. The main US indexes struggled as traders eyed US consumer price inflation (CPI) data due Wednesday, which could play a role in whether the US Federal Reserve decides to cut interest rates next week. On Wall Street, "tomorrow's CPI report is in full focus with a looming rate-decision from the Fed coming," analyst Bret Kenwell of trading platform eToro said in a note. Following recent spending and jobs data "traders have felt even more emboldened to bet on a December rate cut, while the Fed has done little... to quiet that expectation," he added. Earlier, stock markets weighed "concerns that China's economic stimulus measures might not have a long-lasting effect", noted Dan Coatsworth, investment analyst at AJ Bell. The growth plan comes as Beijing contemplates Donald Trump's second term in the White House. The US president-elect has indicated he will reignite his hardball trade policies, fueling fears of another standoff between the economic superpowers. The Shanghai stock market ended higher but Hong Kong fell. Seoul's Kospi index rallied more than two percent after tumbling since President Yoon Suk Yeol declared short-lived martial law on December 3. On the corporate front, shares in Stellantis rose around one percent on the Paris stock exchange after the car giant and Chinese manufacturer CATL announced plans for a $4.3-billion factory making electric-vehicle batteries in Spain. Walgreens Boots Alliance soared 17.7 percent following reports that it could be acquired by private equity firm Sycamore Partners. Boeing jumped 4.5 percent as it announced it was resuming production at two Seattle-area plants that had been shuttered for nearly three months due to a labor strike. Mora’s contract extension will run through 2028 and will pay him $10 million through the remaining four years, with the opportunity to earn more in incentives. The 63-year-old coach is set to make $1.7 million next season, $1.9 million in 2026 and $2.3 and $2.4 million in 2027 and 2028, respectively. UConn then went out and thrashed North Carolina, 27-14, in a game that wasn’t as close as the score indicated. “I am forever grateful. I’m grateful to (athletic director) David (Benedict) and (school president) Radenka (Maric) and the Board of Trustees, but this is about what the (UConn players) did today,” Mora said when asked about the extension in the postgame press conference. In a statement released by UConn ahead of the game, Mora said: “I’d like to thank David Benedict, Radenka Maric and the University of Connecticut leadership for their trust in me and their commitment to our football program. When I first got here, I talked about where we wanted this program to go and we have shown great progress but we still have plenty of work to do. The commitment and dedication from the university and the athletic department has me excited about the future for our football team.” “Three years ago, I tasked Jim Mora with the challenge of leading our football team back to success and through his experience, energy and leadership he has done just that,” UConn athletic director David Benedict said in a statement. “He has taken our program to post season bowl games twice and just guided our team to one of the best seasons in UConn football history, building a momentum to keep this program moving forward. I look forward to his leadership of our football team in the years ahead.” Mora is coming off one of the most successful seasons in UConn football history, having led the team to an 8-4 record and an appearance in the Fenway Bowl. It’s the Huskies’ second bowl appearance in three years. UConn’s eight wins is the most for the program since 2010, and the Huskies had their first winning season since that year, too. A win Saturday would give UConn nine wins for just the third time in program history, with the last two such seasons coming in 2003 and 2007. UConn quarterbacks coach Brad Robbins is heading to Tulsa as an offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, according to a report from CBS Sports. Robbins was part of a coaching staff that helped the offense produce its most prolific attack since the 2009 season and fifth-most in program history (32.3 points per game). Robbins worked at FCS Tennessee Tech and Division II North Greenville before joining Jim Mora’s staff in spring 2023.
GOP Armed Services chair criticizes ban on gender-affirming care for minors in NDAAA YOUNG man accused of spreading false rumours over an alleged abduction on social media in October, is likely to take his plea on December 16. Junior Harry Gereniu is facing one count of Spreading False Information, made during the alleged abduction incident that shocked Honiara residents. Gereniu claimed on a video posted on Facebook that men in a Toyota RAV4 attempted to abduct him and used a ‘hook’ to remove his belongings, at the Kola Ridge cemetery. His matter was mentioned in the Honiara Magistrate’s Court on Monday and again on Tuesday and was further adjourned to December 16. Prosecution was also asked to sort out the charge sheet which has a spelling error before the next court date. Gereniu is still without a lawyer but a lawyer from the Public Solicitor’s Office Wesley Faita’a said he will check if his matter was already allocated to a lawyer in the PSO. He said if the matter is not yet allocated to any lawyer, then he will take up the matter. Police alleged that on 19 October at around 9.15pm, a live stream video was posted on facebook about the alleged abduction. The defendant alleged that a white Toyota Rav4, which had no plate number, attempted to abduct him, with men inside using a hook to steal his bag containing a passport and visa. The Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) investigated the alleged abduction on 25 October, after rumours of the alleged abduction caused the panic in public and resulted in schools temporary closed. Police said the defendant later admitted to fabricating the story based on exaggerated remorse. Police Prosecutor Abel Maelanga is prosecuting the case on behalf of the Crown. The 2024 Formula 1 season may be winding down, but fans already have something to look forward to ahead of 2025. In a first for both, Lego will release a range of hyper-realistic F1-themed sets next year, featuring all 10 teams on the grid. The collaboration, part of a newly announced multi-year partnership, aims to bring the excitement of Formula 1 to Lego enthusiasts worldwide. The collection, set to debut in early 2025, will feature all ten F1 teams, spanning Lego’s Duplo, City, Speed Champions, and Collectibles lines. It comes as F1 prepares to celebrate its 75th anniversary, aiming to tap into a broad and diverse audience of fans. The partnership signals a significant step in Formula 1’s strategy to broaden its appeal, particularly among younger fans. “This is a unique collaboration in F1 history—one that engages children of all ages,” said Will Buxton, motorsport journalist and F1 presenter. “From two-year-olds with Duplo to adult collectors building Technic sets, Lego is part of our formative years. Now, it’s helping to foster the next generation of F1 enthusiasts.” Lego’s Chief Product and Marketing Officer, Julia Goldin, emphasised the creative and educational elements of the collaboration. “It’s not just about collecting an F1 car; it’s about storytelling and strategy,” she said. “Young fans can swap drivers, simulate tyre changes, and recreate races, giving them the tools to learn through play. This partnership is about bridging generations—families bonding over a shared passion for racing.” The product line aims to cater to a range of F1 fans, from casual enthusiasts to those deeply invested in the sport’s intricacies. Goldin added: “Our designs reflect the detailed world of Formula 1, from team strategies to iconic liveries. We know fans engage beyond race day, delving into the sport’s history, innovations, and personalities. This collection gives them a hands-on way to explore that passion.” However, the partnership is not without its challenges. Formula 1’s Chief Commercial Officer, Emily Prazer, acknowledged the difficulties in keeping the products up-to-date with the sport’s constantly evolving technology. “Car designs change regularly, so maintaining accuracy is a key focus,” she said. “We’re working with Lego to ensure that future sets reflect these developments, capturing the essence of the sport as it evolves.” Lego’s Creative Lead, Daniel Meehan, described the process of translating F1 cars into Lego form as both complex and rewarding. “The challenge was distilling what makes each car instantly recognisable,” he said. “For Alpine, it’s the balance of pink and blue. Some models are three pieces; others are 200. Striking that balance between simplicity and detail was crucial.” The collaboration extends beyond physical products. In 2025, fans will also experience “Build the Thrill” activities at Grand Prix events, with interactive fan zones offering new ways to engage with the sport. All ten teams are represented in the collection, a first for both Lego and Formula 1. The sets range from Duplo’s simplified Grand Prix builds for younger children to more intricate Speed Champions models. The rollout will begin in January 2025, with additional sets available for pre-order in select regions. “This partnership brings together two iconic brands to deliver something unique for fans,” said Meehan. “We’re offering them a way to bring the excitement of race weekends into their own homes.” Lego and Formula 1 are betting on this collaboration to fuel continued growth in their fanbases. As both brands look to the future, their shared focus on innovation and engagement is set to redefine how audiences experience the sport.
