NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks rose to records Tuesday after Donald Trump’s latest talk about tariffs created only some ripples on Wall Street, even if they could roil the global economy were they to take effect. The S&P 500 climbed 0.6% to top the all-time high it set a couple weeks ago. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 123 points, or 0.3%, to its own record set the day before, while the Nasdaq composite gained 0.6% as Microsoft and Big Tech led the way. Stock markets abroad mostly fell after President-elect Trump said he plans to impose sweeping new tariffs on Mexico, Canada and China once he takes office. But the movements were mostly modest. Stock indexes were down 0.1% in Shanghai and nearly flat in Hong Kong, while Canada’s main index edged down by less than 0.1%. Trump has often praised the use of tariffs , but investors are weighing whether his latest threat will actually become policy or is just an opening point for negotiations. For now, the market seems to be taking it more as the latter. The consequences otherwise for markets and the global economy could be painful. Unless the United States can prepare alternatives for the autos, energy products and other goods that come from Mexico, Canada and China, such tariffs would raise the price of imported items all at once and make households poorer, according to Carl Weinberg and Rubeela Farooqi, economists at High Frequency Economics. They would also hurt profit margins for U.S. companies, while raising the threat of retaliatory tariffs by other countries. And unlike tariffs in Trump’s first term, his latest proposal would affect products across the board. General Motors sank 9%, and Ford Motor fell 2.6% because both import automobiles from Mexico. Constellation Brands, which sells Modelo and other Mexican beer brands in the United States, dropped 3.3%. The value of the Mexican peso fell 1.8% against the U.S. dollar. Beyond the pain such tariffs would cause U.S. households and businesses, they could also push the Federal Reserve to slow or even halt its cuts to interest rates. The Fed had just begun easing its main interest rate from a two-decade high a couple months ago to offer support for the job market . While lower interest rates can boost the economy, they can also offer more fuel for inflation. “Many” officials at the Fed’s last meeting earlier this month said they should lower rates gradually, according to minutes of the meeting released Tuesday afternoon. The talk about tariffs overshadowed another mixed set of profit reports from U.S. retailers that answered few questions about how much more shoppers can keep spending. They’ll need to stay resilient after helping the economy avoid a recession, despite the high interest rates imposed by the Fed to get inflation under control. A report on Tuesday from the Conference Board said confidence among U.S. consumers improved in November, but not by as much as economists expected. Kohl’s tumbled 17% after its results for the latest quarter fell short of analysts’ expectations. CEO Tom Kingsbury said sales remain soft for apparel and footwear. A day earlier, Kingsbury said he plans to step down as CEO in January. Ashley Buchanan, CEO of Michaels and a retail veteran, will replace him. Best Buy fell 4.9% after likewise falling short of analysts’ expectations. Dick’s Sporting Goods topped forecasts for the latest quarter thanks to a strong back-to-school season, but its stock lost an early gain to fall 1.4%. Still, more stocks rose in the S&P 500 than fell. J.M. Smucker had one of the biggest gains and climbed 5.7% after topping analysts’ expectations for the latest quarter. CEO Mark Smucker credited strength for its Uncrustables, Meow Mix, Café Bustelo and Jif brands. Big Tech stocks also helped prop up U.S. indexes. Gains of 3.2% for Amazon and 2.2% for Microsoft were the two strongest forces lifting the S&P 500. All told, the S&P 500 rose 34.26 points to 6,021.63. The Dow gained 123.74 to 44,860.31, and the Nasdaq composite climbed 119.46 to 19,174.30. In the bond market, Treasury yields held relatively steady following their big drop from a day before driven by relief following Trump’s pick for Treasury secretary. The yield on the 10-year Treasury inched up to 4.29% from 4.28% late Monday, but it’s still well below the 4.41% level where it ended last week. In the crypto market, bitcoin continued to pull back after topping $99,000 for the first time late last week. It’s since dipped back toward $91,000, according to CoinDesk. It’s a sharp turnaround from the bonanza that initially took over the crypto market following Trump’s election. That boom had also appeared to have spilled into some corners of the stock market. Strategists at Barclays Capital pointed to stocks of unprofitable companies, along with other areas that can be caught up in bursts of optimism by smaller-pocketed “retail” investors. K Girish Kumar , Secretary, Thiruvambady Devaswom, vehemently criticised the move and said permission for the fireworks display is being denied citing technical reasons and urged political leaders and ministers from the district to raise their voice against it. "The Vela Ezunnallippu and its related fireworks are held on the same Swaraj Round where the Thrissur Pooram is conducted annually. The present move is a test dose to destroy the iconic Pooram," he told reporters here. Rejecting the reasons for denying permission for the fireworks display, he said the school, hospital, petrol pump and other such institutions have been there in the area for years and the rituals were held there without any issues in the past. The fireworks display is to be conducted in the midnight after taking all necessary precautions and so it won't pose any security issues as claimed in the order, the Devaswom Secretary further said. Without naming anyone, he further alleged that there were attempts to block the parading of jumbos and the apex court granted permission for the same recently. Now-a-days, the temple authorities are forced to approach the court for each and everything to protect the traditional rituals, he added. Runner's World: Top RBs take flight when Ravens entertain EaglesFacebook Twitter WhatsApp SMS Email Print Copy article link Save The U.S. Navy is transforming a costly flub into a potent weapon with the first shipborne hypersonic weapon, which is being retrofitted aboard the first of its three stealthy destroyers. The USS Zumwalt is at a Mississippi shipyard where workers have installed missile tubes that replace twin turrets from a gun system that was never activated because it was too expensive. Once the system is complete, the Zumwalt will provide a platform for conducting fast, precision strikes from greater distances, adding to the usefulness of the warship. The USS Zumwalt is seen at the Huntington Ingalls shipyard Nov. 21 in Pascagoula, Miss. “It was a costly blunder. But the Navy could take victory from the jaws of defeat here, and get some utility out of them by making them into a hypersonic platform,” said Bryan Clark, a defense analyst at the Hudson Institute. The U.S. has had several types of hypersonic weapons in development for the past two decades, but recent tests by both Russia and China have added pressure to the U.S. military to hasten their production. Questions about Gillian’s Wonderland finances draw angry response from Mita Pleasantville man accused of murdering girlfriend Absecon police detain suspect in dollar store robbery Mainland Regional falls to Old Tappan in state final Northfield intersection to become four-way stop 4 Bridgeton men indicted in alleged sex trafficking ring Mays Landing man charged in hit-and-run that injured man, killed dog in Absecon Wonderland developer to pitch vision again Wednesday at Ocean City Tabernacle Atlantic City mayor waives first appearance on witness tampering charge Northfield Councilman Leeds resigns, citing concerns over Mayor Chau's criminal charges Former Galloway gymnastics co-owner accused of sex with minor to remain in jail These South Jersey bars and restaurants have transformed into holiday wonderlands Some Atlantic City casino workers call on union boss to resign for opposing a smoking ban Atlantic County suing NJ Juvenile Justice Commission over placement of youth offenders Biden pardons his son Hunter despite previous pledges not to Hypersonic weapons travel beyond Mach 5, five times the speed of sound, with added maneuverability making them harder to shoot down. Last year, The Washington Post reported that among the documents leaked by former Massachusetts Air National Guard member Jack Teixeira was a defense department briefing that confirmed China had recently tested an intermediate-range hypersonic weapon called the DF-27. While the Pentagon previously acknowledged the weapon's development, it had not recognized its testing. One of the U.S. programs in development and planned for the Zumwalt is the “Conventional Prompt Strike." It would launch like a ballistic missile and then release a hypersonic glide vehicle that would travel at speeds seven to eight times faster than the speed of sound before hitting the target. The weapon system is being developed jointly by the Navy and Army. Each of the Zumwalt-class destroyers would be equipped with four missile tubes, each with three of the missiles for a total of 12 hypersonic weapons per ship. In choosing the Zumwalt, the Navy is attempting to add to the usefulness of a $7.5 billion warship that is considered by critics to be an expensive mistake despite serving as a test platform for multiple innovations. The USS Zumwalt is seen at the Huntington Ingalls shipyard Nov. 21 in Pascagoula, Miss. The Zumwalt was envisioned as providing land-attack capability with an Advanced Gun System with rocket-assisted projectiles to open the way for Marines to charge ashore. But the system featuring 155 mm guns hidden in stealthy turrets was canceled because each of the rocket-assisted projectiles cost between $800,000 and $1 million. Despite the stain on its reputation, the three Zumwalt-class destroyers remain the Navy’s most advanced surface warship in terms of new technologies. Those innovations include electric propulsion, an angular shape to minimize radar signature, an unconventional wave-piercing hull, automated fire and damage control and a composite deckhouse that hides radar and other sensors. The Zumwalt arrived at the Huntington Ingalls Industries shipyard in Pascagoula, Mississippi, in August 2023 and was removed from the water for the complex work of integrating the new weapon system. It is due to be undocked this week in preparation for the next round of tests and its return to the fleet, shipyard spokeswoman Kimberly Aguillard said. A U.S. hypersonic weapon was successfully tested over the summer and development of the missiles is continuing. The Navy wants to begin testing the system aboard the Zumwalt in 2027 or 2028, according to the Navy. The U.S. weapon system will come at a steep price. It would cost nearly $18 billion to buy 300 of the weapons and maintain them over 20 years, according to the Congressional Budget Office. Critics say there is too little bang for the buck. “This particular missile costs more than a dozen tanks. All it gets you is a precise non-nuclear explosion, some place far far away. Is it really worth the money? The answer is most of the time the missile costs much more than any target you can destroy with it,” said Loren Thompson, a longtime military analyst in Washington, D.C. The U.S. Navy intercepted Houthi missiles and drones targeting two warships and three merchant vessels in the Gulf of Aden. But they provide the capability for Navy vessels to strike an enemy from a distance of thousands of kilometers — outside the range of most enemy weapons — and there is no effective defense against them, said retired Navy Rear Adm. Ray Spicer, CEO of the U.S. Naval Institute, an independent forum focusing on national security issues, and former commander of an aircraft carrier strike force. Conventional missiles that cost less aren’t much of a bargain if they are unable to reach their targets, Spicer said, adding the U.S. military really has no choice but to pursue them. “The adversary has them. We never want to be outdone,” he said. The U.S. is accelerating development because hypersonics have been identified as vital to U.S. national security with “survivable and lethal capabilities,” said James Weber, principal director for hypersonics in the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Critical Technologies. “Fielding new capabilities that are based on hypersonic technologies is a priority for the defense department to sustain and strengthen our integrated deterrence, and to build enduring advantages,” he said. Image Credit: Jacob Lund / Shutterstock The financial challenges facing U.S. military households are a significant concern throughout the year. Holidays such as Memorial Day, Armed Forces Day, or Veterans Day highlight the ongoing struggles that service members face, particularly amid rising costs for everyday essentials. Recent data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s Household Pulse Survey shows a troubling trend: Military personnel and their families are finding it more difficult to cover basic household expenses such as food, housing, and transportation than the average American. Our analysis examines how service members are faring in today’s economy compared to civilian households, highlighting the states where military families report the greatest challenges in managing their finances. As we enter Giving Season, we’ve also highlighted meaningful ways to support service members and their families through charitable contributions, offering an opportunity to make a direct impact on those who serve our nation. Service members are struggling more financially than the average American. Image Credit: Upgraded Points According to recent Household Pulse Survey data, members of the armed services are experiencing financial strain at higher rates than the general U.S. population. Over 40% of service members report difficulty covering their usual household expenses, compared to 36.6% of all U.S. adults. The data also shows heightened anxiety among service members regarding rising prices. Nearly 80% of military personnel express stress about recent price increases, significantly higher than the 71.8% of all U.S. adults who share similar feelings. Furthermore, 81.8% of service members are concerned about future price hikes, reflecting widespread uncertainty about inflation’s long-term impact on household budgets. More than half of service members in certain states have difficulty covering basic household expenses. Image Credit: Upgraded Points Across the U.S., the financial burden on service members varies significantly from state to state, primarily influenced by local economic conditions. According to the most recent data, Utah leads with 53.7% of service members reporting difficulty covering basic household expenses, closely followed by Louisiana (52.9%) and Alaska (52.8%). Other states where over half of service members are struggling include Indiana (52.0%), Tennessee (51.2%), New York (50.8%), and Florida (50.3%). A key issue service members frequently raise is that their Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) has not kept pace with the rapidly rising cost of housing. In states where service members face the greatest financial difficulties, such as Utah, Indiana, Tennessee, and Florida, home price increases have far exceeded the national average, exacerbating the strain on household budgets. Another critical factor affecting military families is the employment challenges military spouses face. According to the Department of Defense, the military spouse unemployment rate was 21% in 2023, compared to a national rate of 3.6% that year. Many military bases are located in rural or remote areas, limiting job opportunities for spouses, particularly in specialized fields. Additionally, frequent relocations make it difficult for spouses to sustain long-term careers, especially for those in professions requiring state-specific occupational licenses that can be difficult to transfer. Service members are also more likely to report financial struggles in states with higher-than-average unemployment rates, such as Louisiana, Alaska, and New York. Conversely, the state unemployment rate is below average in 9 of the 10 states where service members report the least financial difficulty. This suggests that strong local employment opportunities, particularly for spouses, significantly ease the financial burden on military households. Photo Credit: Bumble Dee / Shutterstock One of the most impactful ways to support service members, veterans, and their families who are facing financial hardships is through donations to reputable charities. Service members were defined as adults currently serving in the U.S. armed forces (Active Duty, Reserve, or National Guard) and their spouses. This analysis focuses on 3 key questions from the survey: Difficulty Covering Household Expenses: Respondents were asked, "In the last 7 days, how difficult has it been for your household to pay for usual household expenses, including but not limited to food, rent or mortgage, car payments, medical expenses, student loans, and so on?" We defined difficulty as either "very difficult" or "somewhat difficult.” Stress Due to Price Increases: Respondents were asked, "How stressful, if at all, has the increase in prices in the last two months been for you?" We defined stress as either "very stressful" or "moderately stressful." Concern About Future Price Increases: Finally, respondents were asked, "In the area you live and shop, how concerned are you, if at all, that prices will increase in the next 6 months?" We defined concern as either "very concerned" or "somewhat concerned." Statistics with fewer than 50 survey responses were omitted from the analysis. Additional statistics on home prices were sourced from Zillow’s Home Value Index , and unemployment rates were sourced from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2023 American Community Survey 1-Year Estimates . The Air Foamposite Pro , while unorthodox and dismissed upon first release, would go on to revolutionize the sneaker game since it debuted in 1997. The “Pearl” iteration, which launched not long after the coveted “Dark Neon Royal” colorway, is being re-released next year as part of the Swoosh’s holiday 2025 drop. Roughly eight years since the last “Pearl” retro, the much anticipated model is rumored to stay true to the OG, sporting a lustrous cream upper made of a synthetic molded polyurethane that is both durable and lightweight. Details include contrasting black nubuck accents and mesh inner lining, as well as Nike branding along the base, toebox and heel. While the Air Foamposite Pro isn’t tied to a star athlete, it equally gained pop cultural resonance through Spike Lee’s 1998 film, He Got Game , where the shoes were seen donned by Jesus Shuttleworth, played by NBA Hall of Famer Ray Allen. The forthcoming Air Foamposite Pro “Pearl” will release on Nike and select stores in roughly a year.
A number of Donald Trump’s cabinet picks have been targeted by bomb threats and swatting attacks, the president-elect’s transition team has said. Matt Gaetz, former nominee for attorney general, and Elise Stefanik, Trump’s choice to be his next U.N. ambassador, are among those said to have been subjected to threats that are now being investigated by the FBI. In a statement, the agency said it is “aware of numerous bomb threats and swatting incidents targeting incoming administration nominees and appointees, and we are working with our law enforcement partners. We take all potential threats seriously, and as always, encourage members of the public to immediately report anything they consider suspicious to law enforcement.” Swatting is when emergency responders are sent to someone’s home because of a fake call. “Last night and this morning, several of President Trump’s Cabinet nominees and Administration appointees were targeted in violent, unAmerican threats to their lives and those who live with them,” incoming White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement. “These attacks ranged from bomb threats to ‘swatting.’ In response, law enforcement and other authorities acted quickly to ensure the safety of those who were targeted. President Trump and the entire Transition team are grateful for their swift action.” Elise Stefanik , Trump’s choice to be his next U.N. ambassador, was one of those targeted. Her office said in a statement that on Wednesday morning, she was driving home to her Saratoga County residence from Washington along with her husband and their 3-year-old son to celebrate Thanksgiving when they were informed of a bomb threat at their home. “New York State, County law enforcement, and U.S. Capitol Police responded immediately with the highest levels of professionalism,” her office said. “We are incredibly appreciative of the extraordinary dedication of law enforcement officers who keep our communities safe 24/7.” The Okaloosa County sheriff’s office in Florida said on Facebook that it had “received notification of a bomb threat referencing former Congressman Matt Gaetz’s supposed mailbox at a home in the Niceville area around 9 a.m. this morning.” Gaetz was Trump’s nominee for attorney general for eight days before he stepped aside amid an investigation into allegations of sex trafficking and sex with a minor, claims Gaetz has repeatedly denied. The sheriff’s office said that a family member of Gaetz’s lives at the targeted home, but they added that “former Congressman Gaetz is NOT a resident. The mailbox however was cleared and no devices were located. The immediate area was also searched with negative results.” Trump’s nominee to lead the Environmental Protection Agency, former New York congressman Lee Zeldin , said in a statement that his home was targeted with the threat of a pipe bomb with a message described as “pro-Palestinian.” Zeldin, who is Jewish, added that he nor his family were home at the time. “A pipe bomb threat targeting me and my family at our home today was sent in with a pro-Palestinian themed message,” he said. “My family and I were not home at the time and are safe. We are working with law enforcement to learn more as the situation develops.” Brook Rollins, Trump’s choice to be secretary of Agriculture, revealed on social media that she had faced a threat against her family and Texas home. After the area was cleared by Fort Worth police, they could return to the residence, she said. “This morning, we learned that a threat was issued against our home and family,” she wrote on X. “Thanks to the swift efforts by the @fortworthpd we were unharmed and quickly returned home. I want to express my deep gratitude to the law-enforcement professionals who did their utmost, in both speed and expertise, to protect us — as they protect our community every single day.” The threats come after a presidential campaign that saw Trump was targeted in two assassination attempts. The former president was grazed in the ear during a shooting in Pennsylvania this summer and was subsequently the target in an attempt stopped by the Secret Service at his West Palm Beach Florida golf course. Speaker Mike Johnson has called on President Joe Biden and other Democrats to condemn the incidents. “This year, there was not just one but TWO assassination attempts on President Trump. Now some of his Cabinet nominees and their families are facing bomb threats,” he wrote on X . “This is dangerous and unhinged. It is not who we are in America. Joe Biden and all Democrat leaders have an obligation to speak up and condemn this now.” The White House soon issued a statement condemning the violent threats. “The White House is in touch with federal law enforcement and the President-elect’s team, and continues to monitor the situation closely,” a White House spokesperson said. “Federal law enforcement’s response, alongside state and local authorities, remains ongoing. The President and the Administration unequivocally condemn threats of political violence.” The Associated Press contributed to this reportHere's what to know about the new funding deal that countries agreed to at UN climate talks
Tweet Facebook Mail Popular podcast host Joe Rogan has hit back at the verbal broadside against him by ABC Chairman Kim Williams who described the American media figure as "deeply repulsive". The ABC chairman answered with a tirade against Rogan, accusing him of exploiting "people's vulnerabilities". They prey on fear. "They prey on anxiety. They prey on all of the elements that contribute to uncertainty in society, and they entrepreneur fantasy outcomes and conspiracy outcomes as being a normal part of social narrative." Williams continued with his diatribe about the man behind The Joe Rogan Experience . "I personally find it deeply repulsive ... to think that someone has such remarkable power," he said. "I'm also absolutely in dismay that this can be a source of public entertainment, when it's really treating the public as plunder for entrepreneurs that are really quite malevolent." More specifically, some 226,118 examples of the automaker’s Elantra sedans and Santa Fe SUVs from model years 2021 and 2022 are covered by the safety campaign Stateside; it’s unclear how many, if any, vehicles are affected in Canada. On some of these affected vehicles, the soldering used to connect leads in the cars’ printed circuit boards may not have been applied correctly, and could crack; furthermore, high temperatures generated by the camera when in use could worsen the cracks. If the contact degrades severely enough, this could result in a loss of signal and cause the rearview display on the vehicle touchscreen to, well, not display when it’s supposed to. Even though Hyundai had amended this problem on its production lines several years ago, ensuring its supplier’s updated cameras had improved soldering on their boards as of April 2022, it’s only now getting around to repairing the vehicles built before that date and equipped with the inferior parts. Luckily the fix seems easy enough: a swap to the newer-style camera at affected owners’ local Hyundai dealership, performed free of charge. Hyundai is far from the only automaker to have issued a recall for rearview-camera-related problems over the past year or two. A wide swath of manufacturers – from Ford to Honda, to Jeep to Ram; from Porsche to Audi , to Infiniti – have had to correct defects with the backup cameras in their vehicles. US stocks rose to records after data suggested the job market remains solid enough to keep the economy going, but not so strong that it raises immediate worries about inflation. The S&P 500 climbed 0.2 per cent, just enough top the all-time high set on Wednesday, as it closed a third straight winning week in what looks to be one of its best years since the 2000 dot-com bust. The Dow Jones dipped 123.19 points, or 0.3 per cent, while the Nasdaq composite rose 0.8 per cent to set its own record. Wall Street closed third-straight winning week with more gains. Credit: AP The Australian sharemarket is set to retreat, with futures pointing to a fall of 25 points, or 0.3 per cent, at the open. The quiet trading came after the latest jobs report came in mixed enough to strengthen traders’ expectations that the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates again at its next meeting in two weeks. The report showed US employers hired more workers than expected last month, but it also said the unemployment rate unexpectedly ticked up to 4.2 per cent from 4.1 per cent. “This print doesn’t kill the holiday spirit and the Fed remains on track to deliver a cut in December,” according to Lindsay Rosner, head of multi-sector investing within Goldman Sachs Asset Management. The Fed has been easing its main interest rate from a two-decade high since September to offer more help for the slowing job market, after bringing inflation nearly all the way down to its 2 per cent target. Lower interest rates can ease the brakes off the economy, but they can also offer more fuel for inflation. Expectations for a series of cuts from the Fed have been a major reason the S&P 500 has set an all-time high 57 times so far this year. And the Fed is part of a global surge: 62 central banks have lowered rates in the past three months, the most since 2020, according to Michael Hartnett and other strategists at Bank of America. Still, the jobs report may have included some notes of caution for Fed officials underneath the surface. Scott Wren, senior global market strategist at Wells Fargo Investment Institute, pointed to average wages for workers last month, which were a touch stronger than economists expected. While that’s good news for workers who would always like to make more, it could keep upward pressure on inflation. “This report tells the Fed that they still need to be careful as sticky housing/shelter/wage data shows that it won’t be easy to engineer meaningfully lower inflation from here in the nearer term,” Wren said. So, while traders are betting on an 85 per cent probability the Fed will ease its main rate in two weeks, they’re much less certain about how many more cuts it will deliver next year, according to data from CME Group. For now, the hope is that the job market can help US shoppers continue to spend and keep the US economy out of a recession that had earlier seemed inevitable after the Fed began hiking interest rates swiftly to crush inflation. Several retailers offered encouragement after delivering better-than-expected results for the latest quarter. Ulta Beauty rallied 9 per cent after topping expectations for both profit and revenue. The opening of new stores helped boost its revenue, and it raised the bottom end of its forecasted range for sales over this full year. Lululemon stretched 15.9 per cent higher following its own profit report. It said stronger sales outside the United States helped it in particular, and its earnings topped analysts’ expectations. Retailers overall have been offering mixed signals on how resilient US shoppers can remain amid the slowing job market and still-high prices. Target gave a dour forecast for the holiday shopping season, for example, while Walmart gave a much more encouraging outlook. A report on Friday suggested sentiment among US consumers may be improving more than economists expected. The preliminary reading from the University of Michigan’s survey hit its highest level in seven months. The survey found a surge in buying for some products as consumers tried to get ahead of possible increases in price due to higher tariffs that President-elect Donald Trump has threatened. In tech, Hewlett Packard Enterprise jumped 10.6 per cent for one of the S&P 500’s larger gains after reporting stronger profit and revenue than expected. Tech stocks were some of the market’s strongest this week, as Salesforce and other big companies talked up how much of a boost they’re getting from the artificial-intelligence boom. All told, the S&P 500 rose 15.16 points to 6,090.27. The Dow dipped 123.19 to 44,642.52, and the Nasdaq composite climbed 159.05 to 19,859.77. In the bond market, the yield on the 10-year Treasury yield slipped to 4.15 per cent from 4.18 per cent late Thursday. In stock markets abroad, France’s CAC 40 rose 1.3 per cent after French President Emmanuel Macron announced plans to stay in office until the end of his term and to name a new prime minister within days. Earlier this week, far-right and left-wing lawmakers approved a no-confidence motion due to budget disputes, forcing Prime Minister Michel Barnier and his cabinet to resign. In Asia, stock indexes were mixed. They rallied 1.6 per cent in Hong Kong and 1 per cent in Shanghai ahead of an annual economic policy meeting scheduled for next week. South Korea’s Kospi dropped 0.6 per cent as South Korea’s ruling party chief showed support for suspending the constitutional powers of President Yoon Suk Yeol after he declared martial law and then revoked that earlier this week. Yoon is facing calls to resign and may be impeached. Bitcoin was sitting near $US101,500 after briefly bursting above $US103,000 to a record the day before. They head into this game with back-to-back victories, including an impressive road win over the Washington Commanders. And, for all intents and purposes, Dallas has been on a second bye, last playing on Thanksgiving on Nov. 28. The Cowboys should be rested and raring to go. Against the spread If you can't back the COWBOYS +5.5 (-110) straight up, they're catching a healthy amount of points in this prime-time matchup in Big D. The Bengals -5.5 (-110) have lost 3 in a row, and they have lost outright in the past 2 instances as a favorite. Cincinnati is also 1-3 SU and 2-2 ATS in 4 prime-time matchups so far this season. Over/Under OVER 49.5 ( -115 ) is a high number, but it's a strong play. The Over has hit in 5 in a row for the Bengals, going for 27 or more points in 4 games in a row, while the defense has allowed 24 or more points in each of the 5 games, and 9 of the past 11 outings. The Over is 9-2 in that 11-game stretch, too. Against the NFC, Cincinnati has hit the Over in 2 of 3 games, with the only exception a low-scoring win against the lowly New York Giants. For Dallas, it has cashed high in 3 in a row, going for 30.5 PPG in the past 2 games, while allowing 26.7 PPG in the 3-game span. Want to play some games of your own? The top 5 best sweeps casinos to play at before New Year’sIn a major breakthrough, Punjab Police’s State Special Operation Cell (SSOC) Amritsar, has busted a narco-terror module being operated by foreign-based handlers with the arrest of its two members, who also confessed to have lobbed a hand-grenade at Islamabad Police Station in Amritsar, said Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab Gaurav Yadav here on Saturday. Those arrested have been identified as Gurjeet Singh, a resident of Dande in Gharinda, Amritsar and Baljit Singh, a resident of Chhapa in Tarn Taran. Police teams have also recovered 1.4 kg heroin, one hand grenade and two sophisticated pistols— one 9MM Zigana and one 9MM Glock— along with ammunition from their possession. Advertisement The development came in little more than 10 days after the incident reported at Islamabad Police Station at around 3 am on December 17, 2024. Few hours after the incident, Foreign-based Jeevan Fauji, who is associated with the Babbar Khalsa International (BKI), had used social media platform to claim the responsibility for this act of terror. Advertisement DGP Gaurav Yadav said that SSOC Amritsar had received a secret information that a USA-based hardcore drug smuggler Sandeep Singh alias Seepu is running a smuggling network and getting consignments of drugs and weapons from Pakistan to supply them in India through his associates. Acting swiftly on inputs, the teams of SSOC Amritsar arrested one associate identified as Gurjeet Singh and recovered 1.4 kg heroin from his possession, he said. The DGP said that the meticulous investigations and sustained follow-up of backward and forward linkages in the arrest of Gurjeet Singh revealed that the latter along with his accomplice Baljit Singh has also carried out grenade attack at Police Station Islamabad on the instructions of a foreign-based person, introduced to him by Sandeep Seepu. He said that further investigations are ongoing to ascertain the terrorist organisation behind the attack at Police Station and identify the foreign based person introduced by Seepu. Sharing more details, AIG SSOC Amritsar Sukhminder Singh Mann said that the police teams have also arrested Baljit Singh and during further investigations one hand grenade and two pistols along with ammunition were recovered from duo. He said that further investigations are being conducted to unearth this entire network and efforts are being made to track the previous consignments transported by the accused. In this regard, a fresh case FIR No. 74 dated 26.12.2024 has been registered under sections 21, 23-c and 29 of the NDPS Act, section 25 of the Arms Act and sections 3, 4 and 5 of the Explosive Act at Police Station SSOC Amritsar. THE year may be coming to an end but some court cases in 2024 left residents shocked to the core. Here are five court cases which rocked Colchester in the last 12 months. A case like no other had Colchester and the country holding its breath, as the IT worker from Churchsfield, West Mersea, was found guilty and sentenced for committing a double murder. His victims, Stephen and Carol Baxter, were his friends and employers before they were poisoned in their home with a lethal dose of painkillers in April 2023. After a six-week trial, a jury found D’Wit unanimously guilty, learning about an altered last will, and a network of fake personas to manipulate the family from within. Luke D'Wit (Image: Essex Police) During the trial, the prosecution claimed that D’Wit, of Churchfields, West Mersea, administered a fatal dose of fentanyl to the couple and watched them die through a mobile device. The court heard how he created a web of different personas to befriend Carol and the rest of the family, including a doctor who gave specific health advice. The court was also told that D'Wit rewrote the Baxters' will to make himself a beneficiary and in control over the family bathmat business. He was sentenced to spend the next 37 years of his life in prison. Before passing his sentence, Judge Lavender said: "You ended their lives and brought grief and misery to the lives of others. "All of the family have made statements where they have eloquently and movingly expressed their profound loss and suffering." The Ann Marie McEvoy, 40, woman was found guilty by a jury of two counts of wounding with intent after an incident in November 2022. McEvoy, of Church Walk, Colchester, was found unfit to stand trial or enter a plea due to mental health difficulties, leading to a fact-finding trial being held at Lincoln Crown Court in June. The defendant was part of an eight-hour stand off with Lincolnshire Police, the court was told, which ended with McEvoy being arrested by armed officers who forced entry to the address where she stayed. Police recovered a large kitchen knife, which she previously used to deter an officer from her door, as it was captured by body-worn cameras and shown to the jury. The defence in this case argued there was no evidence linking the defendant to the knife. McEvoy was found unanimously to have carried out the acts she had been accused of, but a sentencing was adjourned. Bar owner Daniel Chappell denied causing the death of a 17-year-old girl, who died after suffering “catastrophic” injuries after being struck by a car on Hythe Hill in August 2021. Chappell, 37, was convicted unanimously by a jury of causing death by dangerous driving, despite claiming he was blinded by car headlights during the collision. He sparked disbelief when he shared pictures on social media saying he was planning to go on a trip and posts captioned ‘What a beautiful day to be alive’, which were branded “disgusting” by the prosecution and “gobsmacking” by the ruling judge. Daniel Chappell (Image: Daniel Rees, Newsquest) Chappell, of Prince Phillip Road, was given a one-year sentence suspended for two years, 30 days of alcohol rehabilitation activities, 300 hours of unpaid work and 120 days of abstinence monitoring requirements. James Baines, 24, was spared jail in April after he admitted five counts of possessing indecent images. Baines’ home in King Stephe Road was raided in 2023 and police discovered a mobile phone which had hundreds of images of sexual abuse on it. A further search uncovered three videos of the most serious category, depicting penetration of a child whilst they are in pain or distress. The supermarket worker received an eight-month prison term suspended for two years, 30 days of rehabilitation activity requirements, £340 in fines and an entry on the sex offenders’ registry for the next ten years. An extensive investigation by Essex Police’s Child Abuse Investigation Team, launched in 2016, saw a successful end in December, when Stephen Gallagher was sentenced to 25 years behind bars. Gallagher, 59, of Normandy Avenue, financially and emotionally manipulated his victims and tried to accuse victims of lying, as he denied all allegations. He was found guilty of ten offences at a trial at Ipswich Crown Court in May. Stephen Gallagher (Image: Essex Police) The judge said the effects on his victims were severe and would last a lifetime, as police praised the bravery of those who came forward to report the crimes. Det Sgt Carol Astbury, investigating officer in the case said: “These victims have waited eight years since reporting to get justice and hold Gallagher accountable. “The trial was postponed twice and sentencing adjourned three times however the victims remained patient and strong."
