And single people are more likely to use mobility tools compared to those who are married, according to researchers from University College London (UCL) and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM). Researchers looked at information from a group of more than 12,000 adults in England aged 50 to 89 who were tracked over a 13-year period. At the start of the study, 8,225 adults had no mobility difficulty and did not use mobility assistive products (MAPs). Some 2,480 were deemed to have “unmet need” and 1,375 were using mobility aids. During the follow-up period, there were 2,313 “transitions” where people went from having no mobility issues to needing some help with getting around. And 1,274 people started to use mobility aids. Compared with men, women were 49% more likely to transition from not needing mobility aids to needing to use them, according to the study which has been published in The Lancet Public Health. But were 21% less likely to go on to use mobility aids when they needed them. The authors said their study showed “barriers to access” for women. For both men and women, with every year that passed during the study period the need for mobility aids increased. People who were older, less educated, less wealthy or reported being disabled were more likely to “transition from no need to unmet need, and from unmet need to use”, the authors said, with this indicating a “higher prevalence of mobility limitations and MAP need overall among these groups”. They added: “Finally, marital or partnership status was not associated with transitioning to unmet need; however, single people were more likely to transition from unmet need to use compared with married or partnered people.” Jamie Danemayer, first author of the study from UCL Computer Science and UCL’s Global Disability Innovation Hub, said: “Our analysis suggests that there is a clear gender gap in access to mobility aids. “Though our data didn’t ascertain the reason why participants weren’t using mobility aids, other research tells us that women are often more likely than men to face obstacles such as cost barriers as a result of well-documented income disparities between genders. “Many mobility aids are designed for men rather than women, which we think may be a factor. “Using mobility aids can also make a disability visible, which can impact the safety and stigma experienced by women, in particular. “There’s a critical need for further research to identify and break down the barriers preventing women from accessing mobility aids that would improve their quality of life.” Professor Cathy Holloway, also from UCL, added: “Not having access to mobility aids when a person needs one can have a big impact on their independence, well-being and quality of life. “Our analysis suggests that women, in particular, regardless of other factors such as education and employment status, are not getting the support that they need.” Professor Shereen Hussein, senior author of the study and lead of the social care group at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, said: “The research provides compelling evidence of gender disparities in accessing assistive technology, suggesting that cost, design bias, and social stigma are likely to disproportionally affect women. “This underscores the need for inclusive, gender-sensitive approaches in the design, production and inclusivity of assistive technologies.”US coach Emma Hayes admits to anthem uncertainty ahead of England stalemateBoys soccer: Mustangs victorious at Ervin Mendiola Memorial tournament, Falcons finish third

Hunter could be the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft and is the favorite for the Heisman Trophy. Speculation about his future quieted as he gained notoriety by the week this season. After going off the board earlier with the second pick by the Washington Commanders, Daniels has been their starter all season and one of football's breakout stars . Penix, taken eighth in a move coach Raheem Morris joked “shocked the world," waited behind Kirk Cousins until usurping the veteran and making his first pro start last week. On Sunday night, they'll face off in the league's first prime-time showdown of rookie QBs selected in the first round, and the spotlight is bright with significant playoff implications at stake. “I'm happy for him — he waited his time,” Daniels said of Penix. “He's a phenomenal player in my eyes, and I'm excited to be able to match up against him.” Daniels and the Commanders (10-5) are in the playoffs with a win. They might already be in before kickoff if Tampa Bay loses at home to Carolina, though the Buccaneers are 8-point favorites on BetMGM Sportsbook. Washington is favored by 4 against the Falcons (8-7), who are vying with the Bucs for the NFC South title and a home playoff game and also in contention with the Commanders and others for the conference's wild-card spots. “The reality is that you fight, you fight, you fight and you put yourself in a position to go out there and win your division,” Penix said. "You put yourself in a chance to get yourself to qualify for extra play. We’re right in the mix of doing that, and we’ve got to go do it and finish.” Daniels, who threw five touchdown passes to beat Philadelphia last week and end the Eagles’ winning streak at 10 games, is the prohibitive favorite to win AP Offensive Rookie of the Year honors. Penix completed 18 of 27 passes for 202 yards in a rout of the New York Giants that included two touchdowns by Atlanta's defense and two on the ground from running back Bijan Robinson. “I was really pleased with his composure, his poise, his ability to click through progressions,” Morris said. "Realistically, it was a pretty clean game at the quarterback position. I’m very pleased with what he did and how he did it and the support that he had around him.” Coaching connection Washington's Dan Quinn is facing the Falcons as a head coach for the first time since they fired him in 2020. He’s tough. So when that does happen, that’ll be something that will definitely bring energy to our defense.” Allen had 15 tackles and two sacks in five-plus games before getting injured at Baltimore on Oct. 13. Sacks on the rise After ranking last in the league with 10 sacks through the first 11 games, Atlanta’s long-struggling pass rush has enjoyed a dramatic surge. The Falcons have at least three in four consecutive games, the longest active streak in the league, with 16 total over this stretch. Arnold Ebiketie recorded his fifth sack and recovered a fumble against the Giants, and Kaden Elliss had a strip sack. OKLAHOMA CITY — Some experts believe Bitcoin is poised for another surge in 2025, but should Oklahomans invest? Bitcoin nearly hit $100,000 for the second time this month on Christmas, and the digital currency has seen an annual increase of more than 130% in 2024, up from $43,638 one year ago, according to Chaincatcher. The total holdings of Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) reached 11.2006 million BTC this month, with a strong annual growth of nearly 81% So, is it the right time for Oklahomans looking for additional investments to take a chance with Bitcoin? Matthew Sigel, head of digital assets research for Van Eck, an investment management firm that offers ETFs, mutual funds, and separately managed accounts, seems to think so. He told finance journalist Natalie Brunell on her podcast Coin Stories he expects another big year for Bitcoin in 2025. Sigel bases his prediction on a four-year cycle tied to Bitcoin halving events. According to Investopedia, a Bitcoin halving event occurs about every four years when the reward for mining is cut in half. He said the trend indicates that after the most recent halving event in April, 2025 should be a strong year, and 2026 could be a down year. “When we look at the trough to the peak in each of those four-year cycles, each cycle gets a little bit smaller. The smallest ever trough to peak appreciation for Bitcoin was 2,000% so let’s say that we cut that in half and say it’s going to be 1,000% this cycle,” Sigel said. “Bitcoin troughed around $18,000, so I see an upside to $180,000 this cycle, and I think that’s likely to happen next year.” Sigel and Former CNBC Chief Economist Marci Rossell describe Bitcoin as a volatile asset. During a keynote speech in Oklahoma City earlier this month, Rossell cautioned Oklahoma business leaders that Bitcoin was trading at about $20,000 two years ago, and while gains can be huge, it’s essentially a speculative investment. In addition to cycles, the Bitcoin price fluctuates because it’s influenced by supply and demand, government regulations and investor sentiments. Rossell said if someone looking to invest isn’t comfortable with big swings, the digital currencies market probably isn’t for them. With that risk in mind, regulatory changes and a subsequent increase in demand could mean an increase in value in 2025, Rossell said, prefacing her prediction that moving forward, Bitcoin is likely to be regulated like a commodity as opposed to a stock, resulting in more demand. The SEC has staked its claim on regulating digital currency to the extent that Oklahoma AG Drummond and a coalition of 17 other state attorneys general filed the litigation in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Kentucky last month. The lawsuit comes during a time when about one in five Americans have acquired a digital asset, according to a release from Drummond’s office. The AGs argue the SEC has overstepped its authorization from Congress and see the attempt to classify digital currencies as investments to be overreaching and unnecessary. “We should be encouraging this vibrant, new digital asset industry for its ability to innovate, create jobs and make financial services more accessible for millions of Americans,” Drummond said in a statement last month. “This regulatory overreach by the Biden Administration means to reach into the wallets of hardworking Oklahomans, and we will oppose it vigorously.” President-elect Donald Trump appears to be on the side of the AGs. Earlier this month, Trump chose former SEC Commissioner Paul Atkins to lead the agency.
