More than 60 high school students in Los Angeles County learned to use technology to make business plans in an after-school program, which ended last week with the Young Innovators Accelerator Pitch Competition. The after-school program took place at six across Los Angeles County. The centers are run by nonprofits in under-resourced neighborhoods with funding from the Best Buy Foundation, the Annenberg Foundation and the Greater Los Angeles Education Foundation (GLAEF), the philanthropic arm of the Los Angeles County Office of Education. The Teen Tech Centers aim to give area students a chance to play with the latest technology — and gain job skills in the process, according to Sam Gelinas, vice president of programs, strategy and development at GLAEF. The Young Innovators Accelerator Pitch Competition, now in its second year, furthers the focus on job skills, he said. “The process of developing a budget, developing all the assets, all of that stuff, they’re building some of those soft business skills, and then also some of the tech skills like actually designing a deck and those kinds of things,” Gelinas said. Curriculum and training for the program were provided by the Los Angeles Economic Equity Accelerator and Fellowship, a nonprofit based out of California State University, Los Angeles, Gelinas said. “The trainers were young and dynamic and sort of met students where they were and walked them through the elements of entrepreneurship,” he said. TikTok asked a federal appeals court on Monday to bar the Biden administration from enforcing a law that could lead to a ban on the popular platform until the Supreme Court reviews its challenge to the statute. The legal filing was made after a panel of three judges on the same court sided with the government last week and ruled that the law, which requires TikTok's China-based parent company ByteDance to divest its stakes in the social media company or face a ban, was constitutional. If the law is not overturned, both TikTok and its parent ByteDance, which is also a plaintiff in the case, have claimed that the popular app will shut down by Jan. 19, 2025. TikTok has more than 170 million American users who would be affected, the companies have said. In their legal filing on Monday, attorneys for the two companies wrote that even if a shutdown lasted one month, it would cause TikTok to lose about a third of its daily users in the U.S. The company would also lose 29% of its total “targeted global” advertising revenue for next year as well as talent since current and prospective employees would look elsewhere for jobs, they wrote. “Before that happens, the Supreme Court should have an opportunity, as the only court with appellate jurisdiction over this action, to decide whether to review this exceptionally important case,” the filing said. It's not clear if the Supreme Court will take up the case. But some legal experts have said the justices are likely to weigh in on the case since it raises novel issues about social media platforms and how far the government could go in its stated aims of protecting national security. President-elect Donald Trump, who tried to ban TikTok the last time he was in the White House, has said he is now against such action. In their legal filing, the two companies pointed to the political realities, saying that an injunction would provide a “modest delay” that would give “the incoming Administration time to determine its position — which could moot both the impending harms and the need for Supreme Court review.” Attorneys for the two companies are asking the appeals court to decide on the request for an enforcement pause by Dec. 16. The Department of Justice said in a court filing on Monday that it will oppose the request. The Enduring Word Museum has traveled the world from its home base in Weatherford for 30 years since it was founded here. The free exhibit will set up for two days on the top floor of the college’s new Emerging Technology Building, 225 College Park Drive, beginning at 9 a.m. the first weekend of December. On opening day, Dec. 7, there will be a special program for children at 10 a.m. “It’s on the top floor of that beautiful conference room,” Senior Curator John Sliffe said. “And it’ll be stuffed full.” The exhibit centerpiece is the only replica in the exhibit, Gutenberg’s invention that ushered in the Industrial Revolution. “And everything else is original artifacts,” Sliffe said, describing pottery dating to 3400 B.C. “And they are primarily Biblically-related.” The museum also brings a 1611 first edition King James Bible. Sliffe and the museum’s late co-founder, Rusty Maisel, also gathered colonial soldiers’ Bibles dating to 1753. There’s also a 1658 Oliver Cromwell Bible in the military collection. “It’s called, the Pearl Bible,” Sliffe said. “That’s the first Bible in English for English-speaking soldiers. It’s a little New Testament Bible.” Sliffe said visitors take a fresh piece of The Enduring Word Museum with them when they leave — hot off the press. “We do have a page from a Gutenberg Bible,” he said. “And on the press we have the typeset for that page.” Along with browsing the collection, visitors can catch talks on King Solomon’s Temple and the work of Medieval scribes on Saturday, and on the Reformation and evidence of the Biblical account of creation on Sunday. Sliffe added the nonprofit museum focuses less on faith-based questions when it sets up in public venues like the college. “We are locally based here in Weatherford, but we travel coast to coast when we’re invited,” he said. “And we travel internationally when invited.
