IAG, the parent of British Airways, is weighing options with multiple providers, including Amazon.com Inc’s AMZN Project Kuiper and Elon Musk’s Starlink to equip its fleet with Wi-Fi service, Bloomberg cites from an interview with IAG’s head of innovation, Annalisa Gigante. According to the report, Gigante acknowledged working with Starlink and Amazon’s Kuiper towards something likely for 2025. Also Read: Amazon’s Project Kuiper In Talks With Taiwan For Satellite Partnership According to the Bloomberg report, while U.S. airlines can easily switch to Starlink because the Federal Aviation Administration has already authenticated it, European carriers have to undergo a certification process. British Airways would need a separate certification from Iberia, she said. Amazon plans to launch the first operational Kuiper satellites by 2025. The talks reflect airlines forging deals with Starlink and rivals for faster, affordable, unlimited in-flight Wi-Fi. Starlink boasts of ~4 million customers. More than 700 people have received food parcels from Hamilton district foodbank this month during the charity’s “busiest time of the year” – and they have been supplemented with hundreds of donated toys and gifts over the festive season. A total of 716 adults and children were given food and toiletries up to December 23, with staff and volunteers continuing to hand out vital supplies on Christmas Eve to ensure all those in need of support had vital assistance. They were also able to give families a total of 550 Christmas parcels containing generously-donated treats, games, books and gift cards, at what foodbank representatives describe as “the busiest time of the year”. Staff and volunteers kindly welcomed the Hamilton Advertiser’s photographer to their Cadzow Street warehouse in the run-up to Christmas as they sorted through the additional gift donations, as well as their vital year-round stocks of food and cupboard staples making up the much-needed parcels containing at least three days’ worth of food supplies. Hamilton district foodbank manager Isobel Graham said: “It’s been extremely busy and our volunteers were amazing. The most challenging times can bring out the best in people, our community has proved that. “A massive thank you to all our dedicated team who have worked tirelessly throughout the year under exceptionally difficult circumstances, especially so in the last few weeks, and to all the extra volunteers who gave their time during the festive season, our amazing donors and the Salvation Army who continue to provide their help and support.” Foodbank representatives issued a total of 7332 parcels from April 1 this year until the start of this week – with more than a third of those going to children – and say they are expecting a further increase in demand for their services due to the increasing cost of living and rising energy prices. Now they say several items are low in stock, such as tinned custard, tinned rice pudding, UHT milk, diluting juice, pasta or noodle snacks and jam, and are asking for generous local residents to help replenish their shelves either by donating directly at their local bases or using their new online shop. Isobel said: “Winter can always be a tough time of year for individuals and families on low incomes; we see an increase in services which is to be expected and already we’re noticing our supplies dwindling which is why we are calling on the kind-hearted people of Hamilton to donate as and when they can. “Demand is higher than usual for foodbanks with the cost of living crisis – people have to choose between fuel or food. No-one in Hamilton should need a foodbank’s help and we want to see an end to local people needing emergency food at all; tackling poverty is crucial to our community. “We’re dedicated to ensuring that people in our community without enough money for food are able to access emergency support. Our vital work has only been possible in the past year because of the incredible generosity shown by local people in donating food, time and funds.” Hamilton district foodbank has also partnered with website Give Today to allow supporters to donate much-needed stock directly via their online shop at www.givetoday.co.uk/hamiltondistrictfoodbank/ and Isobel added: “Every donation, no matter what size, makes a real difference.” The foodbank distributed a total of 11,448 emergency food supplies in 2023/2024, up from 10,332 the previous year; and its running costs are also raised locally to cover costs such as warehouse space, utilities and insurances. Offers of help with funding are welcome and local businesses, organisations and individuals interested in supporting the foodbank’s work can find out more at https://hamiltondistrict.foodbank.org.uk/ *Don't miss the latest headlines from around Lanarkshire. Senthilbalaji my relative, says TN BJP chief AnnamalaiSEOUL — South Korea's opposition said Tuesday it would hold back a decision to impeach acting president Han Duck-soo until later in the week. The opposition Democratic Party earlier said it would introduce an impeachment motion against Han on Tuesday to protest against the interim leader's refusal to sign into law special bills to investigate his impeached predecessor. "We have decided to exercise patience, taking into account the sentiments of the people, and wait until the 26th (Thursday) to determine whether our demands are met," floor leader Park Chan-dae said. The party originally set Christmas Eve as the deadline for Han to promulgate two special bills investigating suspended President Yoon Suk Yeol's short-lived imposition of martial law, as well as graft allegations surrounding his wife, Kim Keon Hee. The conservative leader was stripped of his duties by parliament on December 14 following his brief declaration of martial law 11 days earlier, which plunged the country into its worst political crisis in decades. Yoon is now waiting for a decision by the Consitutional Court, which requires six votes in favour from its nine-member bench in order for the impeachment motion to be passed. Currently three seats are empty, and can be appointed. But Han, who stepped in to replace Yoon, rejected the opposition's demand at a cabinet meeting on Tuesday, insisting on bipartisan agreements for the two bills. Han's stance "left us no other option but to interpret it as his intention to continue the insurrection by delaying proceedings", Park told a press briefing earlier. Yoon is currently under investigation by a joint team comprising police, the defence ministry, and anti-corruption investigators. 'Coercive Politics' On Tuesday, Yoon Jong-kun, the Democratic Party spokesperson told reporters that the impeachment motion against Han had been "unanimously adopted" as the party's official stance. The reasons for impeachment include not only rejecting the two bills but also "actively participating in and supporting the insurrection" and "attempting to exercise another form of power while the President's authority had not yet formally ended after the insurrection". The opposition says it needs only a simple majority in the 300-member parliament to impeach Han, as this is the threshold for a cabinet member. The ruling People Power Party, however, argues that a two-thirds majority is required since Han is currently serving as acting president. Kweon Seong-dong, leader of the ruling People Power Party, said The Democratic Party's "coercive politics have reached their peak" adding that they are "constantly interfering with the legitimate exercise of the acting president's authority". "This behaviour is no different from that of gangsters who threaten retaliation if money is not deposited," said Kweon.

NEW YORK , Dec. 24, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, the Council for Autism Service Providers (CASP) honored ABA Centers, the nation's fastest growing autism care provider, by partnering to ring the iconic Closing Bell at the New York Stock Exchange together. Lorri Unumb , Chief Executive Officer of CASP; Christopher Barnett , Founder & Chairman of ABA Centers; and his daughter, Madison Mulvey , were the official bell ringers during the 1 pm ceremony, marking an early close of the markets in preparation for the upcoming Christmas holiday. ABA Centers was founded as a testament to a father's love for his daughter, sparked from Mr. Barnett's personal experience attempting to acquire a diagnosis and then quality care for his own child, Ms. Mulvey, who spent years dealing with a misdiagnosis and missing out on the proper treatment that she desperately needed. What Mr. Barnett experienced as the parent of a child on the spectrum – the inadequacies, the lack of services available, and the long wait lists within the autism care system – were simply unacceptable. As a longtime healthcare entrepreneur, Mr. Barnett recognized that he already harnessed the infrastructure to effectuate real change within the autism care industry, so he set out to create a mission-driven organization, where every employee throughout the corporate and clinical teams is dedicated to making a lasting impact in the lives of autistic children and their families. "I hope that the sound waves of this bell ringing transcend the trading floor and serve as a rally call for quick, compassionate, and top quality autism care across our country," remarked Mr. Barnett. "Seeing CASP and ABA Centers on the New York Stock Exchange podium should encourage other decision makers and deal makers alike to find ways in which they can positively impact the autism care industry further because there are millions of children currently languishing on wait lists and missing out on the autism care that they deserve during the most crucial times." In 2024, ABA Centers achieved the following monumental milestones, which served to amplify its commitment to providing every kid in the country with world class autism care: ABA Centers debuted on this year's Inc. 5000 as the No. 5 fastest growing private company in America due to an outstanding revenue growth of 32,192 percent in the three-year period assessed for the list. A de novo and self-funded growth strategy set ABA Centers apart – and ahead – of thousands of other enterprises vying for a spot on this highly coveted line-up. The organization has carved out a self-sufficient path to success that has proven to be substantial and sustainable, without any private equity investment, nor any significant debt financing. This achievement was quickly followed by Mr. Barnett winning the EY Entrepreneur Of The Year 2024 National Overall Award. Mr. Barnett was chosen by an independent panel of nearly 40 judges from a pool of 214 Entrepreneur Of The Year regional winners, representing 185 companies across the US. His leadership in building ABA Centers into a remarkable business that demonstrates innovation as well as significant positive impact, providing hope for families and continuing to challenge the current autism care market, secured his win of this award. ABA Centers strengthened its footprint along the East Coast and expanded westward, now providing evidence-backed autism care in 34 service markets throughout 10 states. Within these markets, ABA Centers currently operates 26 physical autism care centers, with plans to open nearly 40 new locations throughout the coming New Year. "For mission-driven organizations like CASP and ABA Centers, this bell ringing ceremony offers a platform to amplify our message and highlight the importance of autism care, as well as the challenges faced by the autism community, to a robust and influential audience," stated Mrs. Unumb. Mrs. Unumb and Mr. Barnett were joined on the bell ringing podium by the C-suite of ABA Centers: Jason Barker ; Joseph Heilner ; Kristy Johnson ; Quatiba Davis; Michael Holohan ; Michael Holzum ; Michael Holzum, Jr. ; and Ted Bender ; members of The Christopher M. NEW YORK (AP) — A man accused of setting a woman on fire inside a New York City subway train and then watching her die after she was engulfed in flames made an initial court appearance Tuesday and will remain in custody. Sebastian Zapeta, 33, who federal immigration officials said is a Guatemalan citizen who entered the U.S. illegally, was arraigned in Brooklyn criminal court. He appeared briefly before a judge and wore a white jumpsuit over a weathered black hooded sweatshirt. He did not speak. He will remain jailed ahead of his next court date on Friday. The apparently random attack occurred Sunday morning on a stationary F train at the Coney Island station in Brooklyn. Police said Tuesday that identification of the victim was still “pending at this time.” Authorities say Zapeta approached the woman, who was sitting motionless in the train car and may have been sleeping, and used a lighter to set her clothing on fire. The woman quickly became engulfed in flames, while the suspect then sat at a bench on the subway platform and watched, according to police. Video posted to social media appeared to show the woman standing inside the train ablaze as some people look on from the platform, and at least one officer walks by. NYPD Chief of Transit Joseph Gulotta said Sunday that several officers had responded to the fire and one stayed to keep the crime scene “the way it’s supposed to be" while the others went to get fire extinguishers and transit workers. They were eventually able to douse the fire, but “unfortunately, it was too late,” Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said — the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. During Zapeta's court hearing on Tuesday, Assistant District Attorney Ari Rottenberg said Zapeta at one point fanned the flames on the woman using his shirt. He said a 911 call from a subway rider helped identify Zapeta. Rottenberg added that under interrogation Zapeta claimed he didn’t know what happened, noting that he consumes alcohol. But he alleged that Zapeta identified himself to interrogators in images related to the attack. Zapeta was taken into custody Sunday afternoon while riding a train on the same subway line after police got a tip from some teenagers who recognized him from images circulated by the police. A Brooklyn address for Zapeta released by police matches a shelter that provides housing and substance abuse support. The shelter did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Federal immigration officials said Zapeta had been previously deported in 2018 but at some point reentered the U.S. illegally. In a statement, Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez called the attack a “gruesome and senseless act of violence against a vulnerable woman” that would be “met with the most serious consequences.” The crime — and the graphic video of it that ricocheted across social media — deepened a growing sense of unease among some New Yorkers about the safety of the subway system in a city where many residents take the subway multiple times each day. Overall, according to authorities, crime is down in the transit system this year when compared to last year — major felonies declined 6% between January and November of this year and in 2023, data compiled by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority show. But murders are up, with nine killings this year through November compared to five in the same period last year. Earlier this month, a Manhattan jury acquitted Daniel Penny in the death of an agitated subway rider that the former Marine placed in a chokehold last year. The case became a flashpoint in ongoing debates over safety, homelessness and mental illness on the system. Policing the subway is also difficult, given the vast network of trains constantly moving between the system’s 472 stations, with each stop containing multiple entry points and, in many stations, multiple floors and platforms. On Sunday, police at the station where the woman burned to death were patrolling a different area and responded after seeing and smelling smoke, authorities said.Rokmaster Resources Corp. EU rules requiring all new smartphones, tablets and cameras to use the same charger came into force on Saturday, in a change Brussels said will cut costs and waste. Manufacturers are now obliged to fit devices sold in the 27-nation bloc with a USB-C, the port chosen by the European Union as the common standard for charging electronic tools. "Starting today, all new mobile phones, , digital cameras, headphones, speakers, keyboards and many other electronics sold in the EU will have to be equipped with a USB Type-C charging port," the EU Parliament wrote on social media X. The EU has said the single charger rule will simplify the life of Europeans and slash costs for consumers. By allowing consumers to purchase a new device without a new charger, it will also reduce the mountain of obsolete chargers, the bloc has argued. The law was first approved in 2022 following a tussle with US tech giant Apple. It allowed companies until December 28 this year to adapt. Makers of laptops will have extra time, from early 2026, to also follow suit. Most devices already use these cables, but Apple was more than a little reluctant. The firm said in 2021 that such regulation "stifles innovation", but by September last year it had begun shipping phones with the new . Makers of electronic consumer items in Europe had agreed on a single charging norm from dozens on the market a decade ago under a voluntary agreement with the European Commission. But Apple, the world's biggest seller of smartphones, refused to abide by it and ditch its Lightning ports. Other manufacturers kept their alternative cables going, meaning there were about half a dozen types knocking around, creating a jumble of cables for consumers. USB-C ports can charge at up to 100 Watts, transfer data up to 40 gigabits per second, and can serve to hook up to external displays. At the time of its approval, the commission said the law was expected to save at least 200 million euros ($208 million) per year and cut more than a thousand tonnes of EU electronic waste every year. "It's time for THE ," the European Commission wrote on X on Saturday. "It means better-charging technology, reduced e-waste, and less fuss to find the chargers you need." © 2024 AFPLance Terry scored a game-high 22 points, helping lead Georgia Tech to a 92-49 rout of visiting Alabama A&M on Saturday in Atlanta. Javian McCollum added 18 points, while Jaeden Mustaf chipped in 13 points and seven rebounds, as Georgia Tech (6-7) won its second game in three outings. Baye Ndongo had 10 points for the Yellow Jackets, who shot 54.1 percent (33 of 61) from the field and made 10 of 21 (47.6 percent) on 3-pointers. AC Bryant and Bilal Abdur-Rahman each led the Bulldogs (4-9) with 11 points. Alabama A&M managed to shoot just 20.8 percent (15 of 72) from the field en route to its sixth straight loss. After London Riley's 3-pointer cut the Bulldogs' deficit to 16-15, McCollum's triple began a 12-0 scoring run, extending Georgia Tech's lead to 28-15 with 5:30 remaining in the opening half. Bryant's layup stopped the Yellow Jackets' run, but McCollum scored five straight points to push Georgia Tech's advantage to 15 at the 4:13 mark. The lead expanded to 18 points before Quincy McGriff's layup trimmed the Bulldogs' deficit to 16. Terry's back-to-back triples jump-started a 12-3 run to close the first half with Georgia Tech ahead 50-25. McCollum led all scorers with 18 first-half points, while McGriff led Alabama A&M with seven. Jaylen Colon and Terry then traded triples, before Georgia Tech's 13-6 spurt was stamped with Ndongo's layup at the 3:33 mark, giving the Yellow Jackets an 84-44 edge. Georgia Tech's dominant day was stamped with baskets from a pair of Yellow Jacket walk-ons, as Emmers Nichols and Marcos San Miguel each tallied their first career points in the closing minutes. --Field Level MediaDaryl Bohac, former adjutant general for Nebraska, takes the podium with Gov. Jim Pillen, right, after being appointed director of the Nebraska State Historical Society. Nov. 21, 2024. (Zach Wendling/Nebraska Examiner) LINCOLN — Gov. Jim Pillen has called upon Daryl Bohac to direct the embattled Nebraska State Historical Society, drawing Bohac back into public service after he retired 18 months ago from leading the Nebraska National Guard. Pillen said the decision to recruit and redeploy Bohac to fill a post that oversees collection, preservation and sharing of Nebraska history was based on his view of leadership. “When you spend 45 years of your life in public service, when you’re the adjutant general of the Nebraska Air and Army National Guard, you develop extraordinary leadership characteristics and qualities,” he said of the Nebraska native. Pillen said he needed someone to steer the 146-year-old historical agency he said had veered “off the tracks.” Renamed History Nebraska by the previous director, the agency has been scrutinized and restructured . It recently became part of the governor’s cabinet following the arrest two years ago of the former executive director, who faces theft charges for allegedly improperly handling a private donation to the state agency. Bohac will oversee more than 60 full-time employees, and start with a $175,000 salary. Questioned about Bohac’s qualifications for the history-centric job, Pillen cited his track record in creating a “culture of team.” During the past two years, turnover at the society was 22% and 31%, respectively, among the highest of state agencies, according to state personnel figures. More than once, Pillen mentioned Bohac’s work with the Nebraska National Guard Museum in Seward, which preserves state militia history and educates about the guard’s role during peace and war. Introduced in his new role at a Thursday news conference, Bohac said he had received a phone call from someone outside of the Governor’s Office inquiring about his interest in taking over the agency, which also publishes a quarterly magazine and operates a state history museum in Lincoln and six other historic sites across the state. He said he talked to his wife and others and felt it was a “good fit — perhaps a good opportunity in that I could bring some leadership values to a complex organization.” He said the past 18 months of retirement had been good for him and his family. “But it’s time to go back to work for the people of Nebraska.” Among top priorities, Bohac said, is improving financial accountability. He referred to the past executive director. Former director Trevor Jones is facing felony charges for allegedly misappropriating a private donation. He resigned in 2022, after serving six years as the top administrator, saying he planned to do some traveling . Shortly after Jones resigned, he was charged with theft by deception in connection with diverting two donations from a foundation that had been intended to over anticipated agency revenue losses due to COVID-19. He instead deposited the funds in a foundation he had set up. Jones recently asked the court to dismiss the felony charge, saying he has been denied his right to a speedy trial. A hearing on the motion is scheduled for Tuesday. Pillen also pointed to the past. “It takes a lifetime of having a culture and it got tore down in a few simple years and it’s gonna take a lot of work to rebuild it to what Nebraskans expect.” The governor said he expects Bohac to lessen the society’s reliance on taxpayer dollars and to build active public and private partnerships. “It’s a $9 million a year budget but it doesn’t necessarily have to stand on the backs of taxpayers,” Pillen said. Bohac said he is excited to dive into his new mission — noting what he described as one of the first decisions presented to him in 2013 when he became the state’s adjutant general. It had to do with relocation of the military museum from the old Nebraska State Fairgrounds. He said the operations model relied on a combination of private, state and federal funding, a mix he plans to build upon at the state historical society. Other priorities in his new post, Bohac told reporters, include rebuilding core history museum exhibits to create a more alluring place for tourists and Nebraskans. He also wants to improve public access to archives. Bohac’s hire follows the passage earlier this year of Legislative Bill 1169, which made the historical society a code agency and part of the governor’s cabinet. That shift from independence status, and governance by a citizen Board of Trustees, worried many society employees who feared politics might enter into decisions about subject matter in museum displays, research projects and magazine articles. State lawmakers who supported LB 1169 said it should increase financial oversight and restore trust in the agency. Others feared potential impact. He has managed to adeptly thread the needle of keeping focused on mission and setting aside politics. – State Sen. Danielle Conrad of Lincoln State Sen. Danielle Conrad of Lincoln put forth an amendment intended to protect the academic freedom of choosing museum displays and public outreach. Thursday, upon hearing of Bohac’s appointment, Conrad she welcomed the “sound” choice. She sees Bohac as an “adept leader” and a “nonpolitical person.” “He has managed to adeptly thread the needle of keeping focused on mission and setting aside politics,” she said. Conrad, a Democrat, said she believes Bohac will be supported across the political spectrum to “stabilize the important work of this agency which has been mired in controversy for far too long.” Founded in 1878 by people who saw a need to record stories of both the state’s indigenous and immigrant populations, the historical society was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the Legislature in 1883. In July, Pillen appointed Cindy Drake to be interim executive director. She had been at odds with the policies of the former director, Jones, and was dismissed after 45 years of serving as chief librarian at the society. Drake and Pillen moved swiftly to make changes at the agency, restoring the name to the Nebraska State Historical Society, rescinding a Jones’ decision to rebrand as “History Nebraska” in 2018. Employees also were reassigned. Public visiting hours were to be added at the society’s research room. A diversity council established by Jones was disbanded. During the media event Thursday, Bohac said he was eager to jump into his new job. As adjutant general, Maj. Gen. Bohac was responsible for programs affecting more than 4,500 Army and Air National Guard personnel. He oversaw the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency and served as the state’s official channel of communication with the National Guard Bureau to the Departments of the Army and Air Force. Said Pillen: “The hardcore reality is Daryl and I see a lot of things alike. One is how important leadership is, how important culture is.” SUBSCRIBE: GET THE MORNING HEADLINES DELIVERED TO YOUR INBOX Originally published on nebraskaexaminer.com , part of the BLOX Digital Content Exchange . Nine student organisations have called on authorities to reject a US request to extradite a young man wanted on charges of selling illegal malware on the dark web. In a statement on Saturday, the European Law Students’ Association (ELSA) Malta and eight other organisations expressed their “unequivocal opposition” to the extradition of Meli to the US while “strongly urging” Maltese authorities to reject the request. Calling the case “not merely a matter of nationality... [but] a matter of sovereignty,” the association said authorities in Malta should “assert Malta’s sovereign right to adjudicate offences committed within its jurisdiction.” “The alleged crime was committed within Maltese territory, and it is therefore the Maltese courts that must determine Mr. Meli’s guilt or innocence”, the statement read. Daniel Joe Meli, a 28-year-old check-in agent is being sought by the US authorities for his alleged illegal dealings on the dark web between December 2012 and June 2022. He is currently undergoing extradition proceedings in Malta. If extradited, he will be sent to the US to face charges and serve time – if found guilty. The , posted to Facebook by ELSA Malta and endorsed by eight other student organisations, said Meli’s extradition “raises serious concerns regarding his fundamental rights.” The student organisations said there was “substantial risk” of Meli facing “inhuman or degrading treatment and harsh conditions” and “disproportionately severe penalties inconsistent with Malta’s commitment to justice and human dignity.” The student organisations insisted that should Meli be found guilty, any subsequent sentence “must be served in Malta, ensuring accountability and respect for the territorial scope of our judicial system.” They called on the judiciary "to remain steadfast in its commitment to sovereignty, justice, and the rule of law” while stressing it "imperative the Maltese state asserts its sovereignty”. The statement was endorsed by the Malta Law Students' Society (GħSL), Pulse, Studenti Ħarsien Soċjali (SĦS), European Studies Organisation (ESO), International Students Organisation (ISA), Society for Architecture & Civil Engineering Students (SACES), Betapsi Malta and Vuċi Kollettiva. Student representatives Kris Bajada (UOM Council), Ella Micallef Darmenia (Faculty of Laws) and Thea Sultana (Faculty of Arts) also endorsed the statement. Earlier this month, Meli’s parents a parliamentary petition – linked to in the ELSA Malta Facebook post – calling for legal changes to ensure that crimes committed on Maltese soil are tried in Malta. While Meli originally agreed to be extradited to the US, he later retracted his consent after hiring new lawyers who argued that the magistrates’ court had not verified whether he was medically fit and capable of understanding his decision. In an with in August, Meli’s parents said the young man had not been given his usual medication to treat his anxiety and arthritis, adding to the “immense pressure” he felt to make a decision on his extradition within just 15 minutes. An appeal against Meli's extradition was dismissed, followed by constitutional proceedings. Meli lost the constitutional case in July and was held in custody pending his extradition. But in August the government announced it was drafting legislation that would allow him to contest his extradition once more while introducing safeguards allowing a wanted person “adequate time” to decide on extradition requests. It also allows anyone awaiting extradition from Malta, who had previously consented, to apply before the Court of Criminal Appeal to reconsider their willingness to be extradited. Airports often experience chaos due to a combination of operational, technological, and external factors. One significant contributor is the high passenger volume, particularly during peak travel seasons like holidays, when airports see a substantial surge in travelers, leading to overcrowding. Many airports operate at or near capacity, making it challenging to manage this influx efficiently. Technological issues also play a significant role, as airports and airlines heavily rely on IT systems for operations, including check-ins, baggage handling, and scheduling. Bela Padilla has recently sparked significant online conversation by candidly sharing her views on the chaotic state of Philippine airports. On December 24, she took to X (formerly Twitter) to express her frustrations, and her comments quickly caught the attention of many netizens. In her tweet, Bela identified a major contributor to the disorderliness in airports: the failure of passengers to listen to and comply with the directions given by staff and airport authorities. She remarked that not only do many individuals refuse to follow instructions, but they also tend to become frustrated when situations don’t unfold according to their expectations. Her tweet read, “Of all the airports in the world... one of the major reasons ours are so chaotic is because no one listens or wants to line up when told to and the same people will get angry when things don’t go their way haaaay... Happy Holidays!” With this straightforward commentary, Bela Padilla effectively highlighted a common issue faced by travelers and staff alike. The post resonated with a wide audience, attracting various reactions from netizens who shared their own experiences and frustrations regarding airport operations in the Philippines. Bela’s observations not only shed light on a pressing issue but also opened up a platform for discussion among travelers, emphasizing the importance of cooperation and respect within busy travel environments. Her remarks remind everyone to heed the guidance of those working hard to ensure a smoother travel experience for all. Chiefs head to Pittsburgh on Christmas hoping to lock up the top seed in the AFCWhether you bought a ticket yourself or got some as a stocking stuffer, could that $1.15 billion Mega Millions jackpot have your name on it? The odds may be against you − like 1 in 302.6 million − but that doesn't mean you can't prepare. If there is a winner, Mega Millions jackpot would be the fifth-largest jackpot in Mega Millions history, making the take-home prize a lump-sum payment of an estimated $516.1 million after taxes. How do you even begin to get ready for a windfall like that? The "smartest thing" you can do, in the event that you do win, is keep calm and carry on, financial advisers shared with USA TODAY back in March. And avoid posting any and all details of your win on social media. "If you’re lucky enough to win the lottery, keep it quiet," Rob Burnette, an Ohio-based financial adviser at Outlook Financial Center. "Get organized and make a plan. Consider staying anonymous, if it’s a possibility.” Who, if anyone, do I tell about my Mega Millions win? If you find yourself in a situation where you stand to inherit millions of dollars, the best people to get in touch with financial experts right off the bat so scammers don't get the chance to bleed you dry before you even get the chance to cash in. Holiday deals: Shop this season’s top products and sales curated by our editors. "Crooks usually try to get you to wire money for 'taxes' or 'fees,' or may try to get you to provide them with a bank account number, which they will then clean out," Mega Millions said. "No real lottery tells winners to put up their own money in order to collect a prize they have already won." No Mega Millions representative would ever call, text, or e-mail anyone about winning a prize so be especially wary of who contact you out of the blue. In certain states, you can remain anonymous if you win . Steve Azoury, owner of Azoury Financial in Troy, Michigan, who has advised many lottery winners, including a $181 million winner "who said ‘If I didn’t know you before, I don’t want to know you now.’” "Get a tax attorney and a tax accountant right off the bat and then a financial adviser,” according to Azoury. “They’ll work hand in hand to figure out the plan.” The "plan" will help you get some things squared away, such as whether you will opt to take an immediate cash payout, or if you'd prefer the cash distributed over time. The difference between the two is outlined below: The decision, though, will likely depend on your goals, your age, and what lottery rules are for beneficiaries to continue receiving payments, or if you’d likely squander a lump sum. The size of the lottery winning as well as your current and projected earnings are some things to consider, according to Mark Steber, chief tax officer at Jackson Hewitt. Get expert advice: How do I find a financial advisor? These top firms can help with financial planning. Your financial expert, or experts can also help you find a "fall guy," a person or adviser "who keeps you from giving loans to anybody, who tells people all the money’s tied up in investments, not available," Azoury said. "We have nothing available to help you out, and we’re not interested in your project.” How do I decide what to do with my Mega Millions win? Only you and your financial adviser, or advisers can help you figure out the best way to protect you and your money. Most people won't claim their prize right away, taking some time to figure out a plan that's right for them. Mega Millions claim periods, which ranges from 90 days to one year from the drawing date, varies from state to state. "Winning tickets must be redeemed in the state in which they were purchased, but lotteries typically have a claim-by-mail option for most prize levels," Mega Millions said. But it might be in your best interest to "park" the earnings until you are able to hire and meet with a financial adviser, tax accountant and attorney that's right for you. "One suggestion would be putting your winnings in a brokerage account, as many brokerage firms can spread the cash deposits across multiple banks," according to Azoury. "Within one brokerage account, up to $4 million can be insured, if single, and up to $8 million can be insured on a joint account." How much of my Mega Millions win will I take home? And when do I get it? The exact amount you stand to net will vary, depending on the state you win the Mega Millions jackpot in. Lottery-related regulations and laws are different from state to state. While there is no hard and fast timeframe for the claimed prize to make its way to you, it shouldn't take more than a "couple of weeks," Azoury said. You’ll likely be propelled into the highest federal tax bracket , if you win the lottery. The state where you live and the place where you bought the winning ticket can greatly impact what you pay in taxes and how many, if any other states you will have to file taxes in. California is one a dozen states, including Alaska, Delaware, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming, that does not tax lottery winnings. “This is where a tax professional really comes in handy,” Steber says. “State taxes can be very tricky. When is the next Mega Millions drawing? And how do I play? The next drawing, where the winning numbers for the $1.15 billion jackpot will be determined, is Friday, Dec. 27 at 11 p.m. ET. Mega Millions drawings take place every Tuesday and Friday at 11 p.m. ET. Tickets are available up to 15 minutes before the drawing takes place. In order to win the jackpot, you must match all six winning numbers in a drawing. That being said, players may pick up to six numbers from two separate number pools. Five of the numbers will come from white balls whose numbers range between 1 to 70 and the last number will come from the gold Mega Ball whose numbers range between 1 and 25. Players may also select the "Easy Pick" or "Quick Pick" options, which will have the computer randomly generate six-number sequence. The " Megaplier ," a $1 add-on feature, that can increase non-jackpot prizes by 2, 3, 4 or 5 times. Before each regular Mega Millions drawing, the Megaplier is drawn. From a pool of 15 balls, six are marked with "3X," five are marked with "2X," three with "4X" and one with "5X." Where can I buy lottery tickets? Lottery tickets can be found and purchased from local convenience stores, gas stations, grocery stores or purchased online − in a handful of states. Some airport terminals may even sell lottery tickets, too. You can also order tickets online through Jackpocket, the official digital lottery courier of the USA TODAY Network , in these U.S. states and territories: Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Idaho, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Puerto Rico, Texas, Washington, D.C., and West Virginia.
