In a bold move aimed at bolstering their bullpen, the New York Yankees have acquired relief pitcher Devin Williams from the Milwaukee Brewers . The trade, which has sent pitcher Nestor Cortes and prospect Caleb Durbin to the Brewers , signifies the Yankees' commitment to enhancing their roster for the upcoming season. Closer look at Devin Williams Devin Williams, a standout reliever known for his electric stuff and impressive strikeout rate, has emerged as one of the premier bullpen arms in Major League Baseball. His devastating changeup, often referred to as "The Airbender," has made him a key player in the Brewers' success over the past few seasons. With a reputation for getting batters out in high-pressure situations, Williams is expected to provide the Yankees with a significant upgrade in the late innings. Also Read : Costco Stock Rises Following Strong Friday Earnings Report What the Yankees give up In exchange for Williams, the Yankees parted ways with Nestor Cortes, a reliable left-handed pitcher who has been an integral part of the Yankees' rotation. Cortes has shown the ability to perform in clutch situations, but with the Yankees looking to strengthen their bullpen, this trade reflects a strategic shift in their roster construction. Additionally, the Yankees send Caleb Durbin, a promising young prospect, to the Brewers. While Durbin has shown potential in the minors, the Yankees believe that acquiring a proven talent like Williams outweighs the risk of letting go of a developing player. Implications for both teams This trade highlights the Yankees' desire to compete at the highest level, as they look to reclaim their dominance in the American League. Adding a pitcher of Williams' caliber could prove crucial in tight games, especially in the postseason. Samsung Electronics’ latest premium projector, The Premiere 8K, has become the first 8K projector to receive certification from the 8K Association (8KA). The certification comes just days after the 8KA launched its New Projector certification program on December 10. The program evaluates projectors across multiple technical specifications, including 7680 x 4320 resolution, brightness, contrast, color gamut, HDR capabilities, 8K upscaling, and audio performance. First unveiled at CES 2024, The Premiere 8K introduces several innovative features to the home theater market. Most notably, it’s the first projector to offer wireless 8K connectivity. The projector uses ultra-short throw (UST) technology with advanced aspherical mirrors, allowing it to project high-resolution images from a close distance to the wall without requiring ceiling mounting. The projector boasts 4,500 ISO Lumens of brightness, enabling clear viewing even in well-lit rooms. It also features Sound-on-Screen technology, which combines a top speaker module with specialized software algorithms to create an immersive audio experience that matches the high-quality visuals.Senators' Brady Tkachuk, Linus Ullmark headed to 4 Nations Face-Off
The Social Security Administration (SSA) has been working hard to ensure that their beneficiaries receive the best possible attention, but soon their efforts could be thwarted by Congress, as House Republicans refused to increase necessary funding for the SSA in the continuing resolution passed in September. This refusal forced the agency to implement a hiring freeze last month, plunging the agency into the worst staffing crisis in 50 years with a record number of beneficiaries to serve. This will mean increased wait times on the phone or online when trying to resolve problems, which could lead to a lot of problems down the line. The SSA released a statement addressing the issue “If SSA does not receive increased appropriation through March, over 2,000 additional employees will be lost through attrition in the next three months, including experienced staff. Customer service will decline as wait times in our field offices and on the 800 Number increase, backlogs grow, and customers experience further delays in waiting for their claims to be processed.” The Administration, which was doing well under the direction of former Commissioner Martin O’Malley made a valient effort to make do with the existing budget, but the situation is unsustainable, especially if there are more cuts. As an SSA spokesperson established, “Under the existing Continuing Resolution (which did not include the Administration’s requested anomaly) the Social Security Administration was forced to institute a hiring freeze on Nov. 21. Many of the gains we’ve experienced will be lost under continued flat funding.” And the SSA is not the only agency experiencing these cuts negatively, the IRS and the Federal Aviation Administration, both key players have also started their countdown until their hiring freezes because of lack of allocated funds. The impact of the lack of funding on Social Security Should the funding crisis not be averted, agency employees would likely face up to 10 days of furlough, closing offices and tanking service levels. The SSA spokesperson continued “This means our field offices, card centers, and the national 800 number would have reduced levels of service and further delay critical services that the public depends on.” But it is not just SSA employees that are concerned, Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee also issued a warning over the program’s lack of funding and its impact on beneficiaries “The Senate Appropriations bill provided a bump-up. The House Appropriations bill cut them quite a bit. It would be terrible if they have to furlough staff. We should not be cutting the Social Security budget. It just makes it harder for Americans to get their benefits. It means that customer service goes way down. I don’t know why anybody would support that”. The lack of funding, which would be to $401 million below its fiscal 2024 operating level and $1.6 billion below President Biden’s request for increased funds, would cripple services, but Republicans do not seem to care very much. They argue that the Biden request is “unsustainable and could lead to significant reductions in other non-defense discretionary areas.” One Republican Senator blamed the issue on the agency’s employees are working from home, by refusing to hear any other reason. He is not alone, many House Republicans point out that only 39 percent of SSA officials in Washington report to the office at least three days a week. A Republican aid stated that “They have the resources and should responsibly use the increase they’ve already been given” but it may not be that simple. As the Trump transition team and congressional Republicans advance plans for a new “ Department of Government Efficiency “, led by Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, the initiative aims to streamline federal operations, with Musk proposing $2 trillion in budget cuts. The two held initial meetings with Republicans on Capitol Hill to discuss their vision.

South Korea lifts president's martial law decree after lawmakers vote against itBETHEL — The SAD 44 School Board is wrestling with how to update its policy on the use of cell phones in schools. Directors held a lengthy, informal discussion at last week’s board meeting as they considered the policy, adopted in 2017. School officials said it no longer matches the current practice in the school and needs to be revised. They have been getting input from staff, and the board’s Policy Committee is tasked with eventually making a recommendation. The written policy currently prohibits cell phone use except when a teacher or principal approves it for “a specific educational, health or safety purpose.” Supt. Mark Kenney explained that while phones are generally not used at the elementary level and are mostly left in lockers or backpacks at the middle school, the high school now allows limited use at specified times. Those include at breakfast, lunch and during time passing between classes. In specific classrooms it is up to the teacher, he said, noting some let the students use them as calculators. Typically kids are asked to put them in a storage slot during class. Overall, any school use is by permission of parents, said Kenney. The goal, he said, is to find the right balance between restricting phones and using them appropriately. Teaching technology Telstar High School Principal John Eliot offered more insight into the philosophy of use at the that level. “Our job is to teach the use of technology appropriately,” he said, and cell phones fall under that. Kenney added that the schools have heard from employers who say young employees struggle with phone use, and learning to balance it before getting a job is a good skill. Eliot said he recently attended a meeting of the Maine Principals Association, and he learned only a couple of high schools ban the use of phones. Those schools, he said, had had some problems, with “a lot of office referrals.” Most principals are hesitant to ban them and, said Eliot, Telstar’s approach “is working here.” He said there is little abuse, and “it’s not getting to the disciplinary level.” At lunchtime at Telstar, Eliot said, many students play basketball in the gym, and he estimated only about a dozen phones can be seen in use during lunch. Director Scott Cole of Bethel was skeptical, questioning whether the school is obligated to teach kids the use of smart phones. He saw that as a distinction from the laptop computers students have. Cole noted the schools have kids seven hours a day, paid for by taxpayers. “Why introduce anything that could be disruptive?” he asked, potentially undermining the quality of education. He speculated that with phones nearby in backpacks, students might spend more time wondering what they were missing online than paying attention in class. Another director mused that having to wait seven hours to check messages might weigh more on students’ minds than being able to check periodically during the day. Director Stephanie Cayer of Bethel noted kids can also get on social media via their laptops. A couple of directors said that while they might otherwise personally lean toward a day-long ban, they were inclined to take the recommendation of teachers and staff. Dave Bartlett of Newry, chairman of the Policy Committee, said that if the teachers don’t think the phone use undermines education, he could go along with limited use. TMS Principal Lindsay Luetje said some parents want students to have their phones with them at all times so they can reach them, making it difficult to be consistent with the rules. Greenwood Director Destiny Hughes said that many parents worry if their kids are safe and secure in school as a result of increased levels of school violence in recent years. “There’s more to it than them just being on social media,” she said. In response to a question about the frequency of complaints related to online bullying, Luetje and Kenney said most of it happens outside of school. But, said Kenney, “We have to deal with what happens outside. It affects school.” The Policy Committee planned to take the input of the board members under consideration as they work to craft an updated policy. We invite you to add your comments. NoneIce Spice already seems to have addressed the backlash to her weight loss , but fans won't give up on this narrative just yet. Moreover, a recent top-down selfie of hers sparked even more concern over her slim figure, regardless of whether or not it's what she's shooting for. Fans seem particularly worried about the Bronx femcee's visible bone structures and about just how drastic the physical transformation has been. Of course, this is just social media gossip and speculation, as she herself seems committed to her fitness journey and to this new look. So we can't tell if the haters are really keeping the 24-year-old's best health interests at heart or if they just prefer her previous build. In either case, Ice Spice is just enjoying her life right now and is probably letting all this roll off her shoulder. After all, she has more grand things to attend to, such as a recent SKIMS store opening in New York City that she supported Kim Kardashian at. But despite all these high-profile celebrity developments, the online hate train is chugging along at a steady pace thanks to this weight loss debate. Hopefully one day we reach a point where we primarily talk about the music that artists dropped this year instead of focusing on their personal lives. Read More: Ice Spice Tantalizes Fans With Thirst Traps From Dubai Vacation Elsewhere, Ice Spice has just been dealing with other pitfalls of fame, such as recent legal action against her for allegedly stealing another artist's song. Specifically, Brooklyn rapper D.Chamberz alleged that "In Ha Mood" is "strikingly similar" to his 2021 cut "In That Mood." She ended up settling the lawsuit with Chamberz, so we don't really have many details as to whether or not she or her team admitted to any alleged wrongdoing. As for this weight loss debacle , some fans are alleging Ozempic use whereas others aren't thinking about it so deeply. Usually celebrities face the opposite beauty standards, so it's been bizarre to see Ice Spice garner these reactions. Nevertheless, we hope that this dramatic transformation is all by design, and if that's what she wants, then we hope fans turn more supportive with time. Alarm grew in France on Friday over the fate of a prominent French-Algerian novelist detained in the country of his birth, with his publisher urging his immediate release and President Emmanuel Macron closely following the case. Boualem Sansal, a major figure in francophone modern literature, is known for his strong stances against both authoritarianism and Islamism as well as being a forthright campaigner on freedom of expression issues. His detention by Algeria comes against a background of tensions between France and its former colony which have also appear to have spread to the literary world. The 75-year-old writer, granted French nationality this year, was on Saturday arrested at Algiers airport after returning from France, according to several media reports including the Marianne weekly. The Gallimard publishing house, which has published his work for a quarter of a century, in a statement expressed "its very deep concern following the arrest of the writer by the Algerian security services", calling for his "immediate release". There has been no confirmation from the Algerian authorities of his arrest and no other details about his situation. Macron is "very concerned by the disappearance" of Sansal, said a French presidential official, asking not to be named. "State services are mobilised to clarify his situation," the official said, adding that "the president expresses his unwavering attachment to the freedom of a great writer and intellectual." A relative latecomer to writing, Sansal turned to novels in 1999 and has tackled subjects including the horrific 1990s civil war between authorities and Islamists. His books are not banned in Algeria but he is a controversial figure, particularly since making a visit to Israel in 2014. Sansal's hatred of Islamism has not been confined to Algeria and he has also warned of a creeping Islamisation in France, a stance that has made him a favoured author of prominent figures on the right and far-right. Prominent politicians from this side of the political spectrum rushed to echo Macron's expression of concern for the writer. Centre-right former premier and candidate in 2027 presidential elections Edouard Philippe wrote on X that Sansal "embodies everything we cherish: the call for reason, freedom and humanism against censorship, corruption and Islamism." Far-right figurehead Marine Le Pen, another possible 2027 contender, said: "This freedom fighter and courageous opponent of Islamism has reportedly been arrested by the Algerian regime. This is an unacceptable situation." In 2015, Sansal won the Grand Prix du Roman of the French Academy, the guardians of the French language, for his book "2084: The End of the World", a dystopian novel inspired by George Orwell's "Nineteen-Eighty Four" and set in an Islamist totalitarian world in the aftermath of a nuclear holocaust. His publisher said that Sansal's novels and essays "exposed the obscurantisms of all kinds which are tragically affecting the way of the world." The concerns about his reported arrest come as another prominent French-Algerian writer Kamel Daoud is under attack over his novel "Houris", which won France's top literary prize, the Goncourt. A woman has claimed the book was based on her story of surviving 1990s Islamist massacres and used without her consent. She alleged on Algerian television that Daoud used the story she confidentially recounted to a therapist -- who is now his wife -- during treatment. His publisher has denied the claims. The controversies are taking place in a tense diplomatic context between France and Algeria, after Macron renewed French support for Moroccan sovereignty over the disputed territory of Western Sahara during a landmark visit to the kingdom last month. Western Sahara, a former Spanish colony, is de facto controlled for the most part by Morocco. But it is claimed by the Sahrawi separatists of the Polisario Front, who are demanding a self-determination referendum and are supported by Algiers. Daoud meanwhile has called for Sansal's release, writing in the right-wing Le Figaro: "I sincerely hope that my friend Boualem will return to us very soon", while expressing his bafflement in the face of the "imprudence" that Sansal allegedly showed in going to Algeria. dax-vl-sjw/givThe arrival of the early signing period Wednesday offered a stark reminder for college football fans. If recruiting rankings offer any accurate gauge in the era of the transfer portal, those teams competing for College Football Playoff berths now should keep contending for years to come. Texas, Georgia, Alabama and Ohio State are all on track to earn playoff invitations, and those four schools are landing the nation’s top high school recruiting classes. It represents one more example of how the Southeastern Conference and Big Ten have separated themselves from all the other leagues. Steve Wiltfong, the vice president of recruiting and the transfer portal for On3, said it’s apparent why those programs continue recruiting so well. “First and foremost, those are the programs with the most resources,” Wiltfong said. “They’re the programs that are having the most success on the field and in the NFL draft.” The identity of the No. 1 class according to composite rankings of recruiting sites compiled by 247Sports may not be determined until the nation’s top-ranked uncommitted prospect — Manchester (Georgia) defensive tackle Justus Terry — announces his decision Friday. Terry, the nation’s No. 10 overall recruit according to the 247Sports Composite, is considering Georgia, Texas and Auburn. He’s the rare prospect delaying his decision. Virtually every top recruit already had committed to a school well before the signing period, continuing a trend that took effect from the time a December signing date was added in 2017 to the traditional February signing period. This year, that early signing period was moved up a few weeks so that it would take place before the transfer window opens Monday. Perhaps the most notable development in the weeks leading up to the signing period was quarterback Bryce Underwood’s decision to stay in his home state and play for Michigan after initially planning to play at LSU. Underwood’s switch brought late momentum for the defending national champions, whose recruiting class was ranked sixth as of Wednesday morning. This will be Michigan’s first top-10 class since 2020. Michigan’s recruiting emergence wasn’t the only surprise. Auburn has a likely top-five class after posting a fourth consecutive losing season. Florida was the fastest-rising team in the recruiting rankings after coach Billy Napier earned a vote of confidence and freshman quarterback DJ Lagway helped the Gators win three straight games to close the regular season. “I’m calling it the DJ Lagway effect,” said Andrew Ivins, the director of scouting for 247Sports. “They went from outside the top 50 to knocking on the door for a top-10 recruiting class. We haven’t really seen that type of push ever.” Stay updated on the latest sports stories with the WVTM 13 app. You can download it here .
