In 2018, during Donald Trump’s first presidential term, he imposed tariffs on Chinese imports because he felt the US trade deficit with China was too high. Trump is promising more tariffs on Chinese imports during his second term, but this time, the rationale is different. Trump wants additional tariffs to punish China for fentanyl produced illegally in the country that ends up on American streets, contributing to the opioid epidemic. The US trade deficit with China is still large. Trump has just come up with a different problem he thinks tariffs can solve. Tariffs, in fact, are becoming Trump’s silver-bullet solution to everything. Here’s a rundown of what he has threatened so far: Mexico: Tariffs of 25% on all imports, unless Mexico helps stem the flow of migrants and fentanyl into the United States. Canada: Same as Mexico , although few unauthorized migrants enter the United States from Canada. China: Tariffs of 10% on all imports unless fentanyl shipments decline. While campaigning, Trump called for new tariffs on Chinese imports as high as 60%. The “BRICS” nations (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, and other lesser-developed countries): A 100% tariff if they try to develop a common currency that could rival the US dollar. Everybody else: A 10% "baseline" tariff on all imports to the United States, from everywhere. In addition, Trump said during this year's presidential campaign that he’d consider a tariff of 200% or more on cars imported from Mexico to basically prevent any Mexican-built vehicles from entering the United States. He threatened a 200% tariff on John Deere equipment if it is made in Mexico for sale in the United States. He even suggested replacing the US income tax with revenue drawn from dramatically higher tariffs. “To me, the most beautiful word in the dictionary is 'tariff,'” Trump said during an October 2024 interview. “It needs a public relations firm.” Economists are far less enamored. Tariffs are taxes paid by the importing country, with the costs of US tariffs borne by American businesses and consumers. Tariffs can benefit domestic producers but generally make production less efficient and more expensive. The Peterson Institute for International Economics estimates that if enacted in full, Trump’s proposed tariffs would cost the typical family more than $2,600 per year in higher costs and other trade-offs. There would be further damage to the US economy if other nations retaliated with their own tariffs on US exports, as they normally do. Investors, however, have also caught on to Trump’s schtick: He threatens draconian tariffs but mostly ends up bluffing. While campaigning for president in 2016, for example, he called for tariffs as high as 45% on all Chinese imports. As president, however, he imposed carefully targeted tariffs of just 7.5% to 25%, while exempting most finished consumer goods to prevent sticker shock shoppers might face if the price of hundreds of everyday items suddenly jumped. Markets are discounting Trump’s tariff threats as they prepare for a second round. “Despite dire warnings over tariffs, the markets are unfazed,” Oxford Economics explained in a Nov. 29 research note. “The uncertainty has spawned a cottage industry of possible scenarios that could unfold under various outcomes. The unfazed market response likely reflects a wait-and-see mindset among investors.” Trump clearly views the stock market’s performance as a barometer of his effectiveness as president. So while he threatens disruptive moves that could tank certain sectors, or even the entire market, investors now interpret them as opening bids likely to be severely watered down, if they go into effect at all. But if Trump threatens tariffs on a case-by-case basis to achieve a variety of unrelated goals, can he actually pull them off? Possibly, yes. He can at least come up with some material for that public relations firm to work with. On migration, the number of entries along the southwest border is already down sharply since President Biden enacted a series of executive orders in May making it much harder to enter the country legally. Trump’s harsh migration policies could easily bring the numbers down enough for Trump to declare victory and avert the Mexico and Canada tariffs (or come up with another tariff-related demand). China could probably do enough to crack down on fentanyl shipments and wriggle out from Trump’s 10% tariff. The likelihood of a BRICS currency with worldwide appeal is low to begin with , so Trump can claim an easy victory on that one. Any company Trump targets by name is likely to find some way to placate Trump, as they did during his first term. All in all, Trump’s demands of US trading partners aren’t that onerous so far. Trump’s tariff plan is supposed to have a much broader goal, which is to make imports so expensive that there’s a resurgence of domestic production in industries where it has become cost-prohibitive to make stuff in America. That’s a much tougher target, given that there may be little incentive for any business to start making low-profit goods such as socks, toys, tools, or electronics with costly American labor. Come to think of it, that might have something to do with Trump’s new justifications for tariffs: He's making it easier to claim he got what he wanted. MEXICO CITY – Over 18,000 people in Mexico have registered online to run for Supreme Court seats and federal judgeships in the country's contentious new selection process , but a random drawing in the end will determine who gets on the ballot, officials said Monday. The ruling party pushed through a constitutional reform in September to make all federal judges stand for election, replacing the system where court employees and lawyers mainly move up through the ranks. Now, candidates for Supreme Court seats and federal judgeships need only a law degree, a grade point average of 3.2, “five years of professional experience” and five letters of recommendation from neighbors or friends. Garda car (stock) Two young men from Northern Ireland who died in a serious road crash in Co Donegal have been named locally. The two men, who were in their 30s, died when their car was in a collision with another car in the village of Liscooley in east Donegal at approximately 10pm last night. The men have been named as friends Ryan Glenn and Gordy Galbraith, the Irish Mirror has reported. READ MORE: Two killed and three injured after serious crash Both are understood to be from the nearby Co Tyrone village of Castlederg. Three other people from the other vehicle were also injured. A man and a woman, both in their 70s, were rushed to Letterkenny University Hospital. They are currently in a serious condition in the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital. Another woman, in her 30s, is also being treated for non life-threatening injuries. The accident happened on a straight stretch of the N15 road and Gardai are trying to determine what caused the crash. Garda Forensic Collision Investigators arrived at the scene at first light this morning to begin their pain-staking investigation. Local Parish Priest at Crossroads, Killygordon, Fr Patsy Arkinson, attended the scene of the crash late last night. He also said a rosary for those involved in the collision. He described the scene as "shocking," and that locals were "shocked and hurt" following the tragic incident. He also offered his thoughts and prayers to the deceased and injured in the collision. Local Fianna Fail county councillor Patrick McGowan, who lives just minutes from the scene of last night's tragedy, said the entire community was in shock. The results come as a blow to the Conservatives in the Kent area as Reform continues to threaten them from the right. Labour will also be concerned that this is indicative of a broader disenfranchisement with the current Government. Reform secured the victories on Kent County Council and Dartford Borough Council. In Swanscombe and Greenhithe, Kent, Reform won 29% of the vote, up from just 1.6% last time out. Labour was second with 24.6% of the vote while the Tories languished in fourth with 15.6%. The two seats were previously held by the independent Swanscombe and Greenhithe Residents’ Association (SGRA). Thomas Mallon was the Reform UK candidate who will now take a seat on the council.
