With the Kings dealing with some injuries, they’re looking to sign some depth on their roster. The Kings are nearing a contract with former Celtics forward Jae Crowder, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania . The Kings are currently 8-10 to start the season as they’re also on a four-game losing streak. So they’re looking for some potential minutes from the 13-year veteran in Crowder. Crowder played for the Bucks last season, playing in 50 games (25 starts). He averaged 6.2 points and 3.2 rebounds in 23.1 minutes per game as he’s been a bench piece for the past several years. The Kings likely aren’t going to need heavy minutes from Crowder, but they can use the depth after a slow start to the season. Crowder will play for his ninth team as long as the deal with the Kings goes through. He has played for the Mavericks, Celtics, Cavaliers, Jazz, Grizzlies, Heat, Suns and Bucks in that order throughout his career. He has played in 803 career games with 434 starts during his NBA career. MEXICO CITY – Over 18,000 people in Mexico have registered online to run for Supreme Court seats and federal judgeships in the country's contentious new selection process , but a random drawing in the end will determine who gets on the ballot, officials said Monday. The ruling party pushed through a constitutional reform in September to make all federal judges stand for election, replacing the system where court employees and lawyers mainly move up through the ranks. Recommended Videos Current court employees and their supporters have staged dozens of demonstrations against the reforms, calling them part of a ruling-party campaign to weaken checks and balances and eliminate independent regulatory and oversight bodies. Now, candidates for Supreme Court seats and federal judgeships need only a law degree, a grade point average of 3.2, “five years of professional experience” and five letters of recommendation from neighbors or friends. That, and some luck in the final drawing. Officials rejected criticism that has called the process rushed or amateurish for the often highly technical posts that can hear cases including intellectual property, organized crime and Constitutional law. “The results have been spectacular,” said Arturo Zaldivar, a top advisor to President Claudia Sheinbaum. According to the plan, evaluation committees will have just over a month to review thousands of resumes and whittle the field to about 10 candidates or less for each for the 881 judgeships and nine seats on the Supreme Court. Then 1,793 names chosen at random from those selected will appear on the ballot on June 1. Critics warn that many who land on the ballot will be unknowns who perhaps have never argued a case in the courts they seek to run. “You don’t elect a doctor or a surgeon for an operation based on their popularity, you elect them based on their technical expertise, their ability, their knowledge,” said Sergio Méndez Silva, the legal coordinator for the civic group Foundation for Justice. “That also applies for a judge.” With candidates now having to run election campaigns, critics warn there's a chance drug cartels or political parties could finance them to get friendly judges onto the bench. There are also concerns that the evaluation committees deciding who makes the cut for the selection to appear on ballots may not be impartial. Most committee members were appointed by the legislative or executive branches, controlled by the ruling Morena party. Some critics argue that the current justice system, which is riddled with nepotism, corruption and a lack of accountability, needs to be changed. “We need a justice system that gives results,” said Martínez Garza, an academic and former head of the human rights commission in the northern border state of Nuevo Leon who has registered to run for a Supreme Court seat. Trials in Mexico can last for years, and the ruling party has added to the growing list of crimes for which bail is not allowed, meaning that a large percentage of the prison population is people awaiting trial. ____ Follow AP’s coverage of Latin America and the Caribbean at https://apnews.com/hub/latin-america

Garda car (stock) Two young men from Northern Ireland who died in a serious road crash in Co Donegal have been named locally. The two men, who were in their 30s, died when their car was in a collision with another car in the village of Liscooley in east Donegal at approximately 10pm last night. The men have been named as friends Ryan Glenn and Gordy Galbraith, the Irish Mirror has reported. READ MORE: Two killed and three injured after serious crash Both are understood to be from the nearby Co Tyrone village of Castlederg. Three other people from the other vehicle were also injured. A man and a woman, both in their 70s, were rushed to Letterkenny University Hospital. They are currently in a serious condition in the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital. Another woman, in her 30s, is also being treated for non life-threatening injuries. The accident happened on a straight stretch of the N15 road and Gardai are trying to determine what caused the crash. Garda Forensic Collision Investigators arrived at the scene at first light this morning to begin their pain-staking investigation. Local Parish Priest at Crossroads, Killygordon, Fr Patsy Arkinson, attended the scene of the crash late last night. He also said a rosary for those involved in the collision. He described the scene as "shocking," and that locals were "shocked and hurt" following the tragic incident. He also offered his thoughts and prayers to the deceased and injured in the collision. Local Fianna Fail county councillor Patrick McGowan, who lives just minutes from the scene of last night's tragedy, said the entire community was in shock. "I would like to express my condolences to the bereaved families. We cannot imagine the pain they are going through now. The whole community is still in shock today to wake up to the news that two young men have lost their lives. It's just so sad. "But I would also like to wish those injured in the tragedy a speedy recovery. Our thoughts and prayers are with all involved," he said. Head of the Garda Traffic Corps in Co Donegal, Inspector Seamus McGonigle, appealed for anybody who was in the area at the time of the crash to contact Gardai. He said "We would like to contact members of the public who have already been in contact with us in relation to the collision. However, we would appeal to anybody who was driving between Stranorlar and Castlefin from 9.30pm to 10pm and may have witnessed anything to contact Gardai." Google on Monday introduced a new chip called Willow, which solved in five minutes a computing problem that would take a classical computer more time than the history of the universe. Tech companies are chasing quantum computing in hopes of developing systems that perform at speeds far faster than traditional silicon-based computers. The building blocks of quantum computers, called "qubits", while being fast, are error-prone, making it hard to ensure quantum computers are reliable and commercially viable. The more qubits used in quantum computing, the more errors typically occur. But Google said on Monday it found a way to string together qubits in the Willow chip so that error rates decline as the number of qubits rise, adding that it can also correct errors in real time. There are numerous options for concert earplugs nowadays, so you don't have to settle for the bargain bin foam bits that completely seal off your ears anymore. The PPE-grade products vary in design and performance, with some offering different levels of noise reduction. That hearing protection always comes with the promise that the earplugs won't completely muffle the band, which is a real problem when you have to settle for the generic foam versions from the bartender. Loop has been in the concert earplug game since its founding in 2016. In that time, its product roster has grown to encompass nine different models, including dedicated options for sleep, travel, commuting and social events in addition to concerts, festivals and sporting events. The Switch 2 ($59.95) is Loop's latest, an improved version of the original Switch that debuted the ability to change sound filter levels while the earplugs were still in your ears. To put the audio quality to the test, I took them to a 100dB rock show in a small venue last month. Reform UK has secured victory in two council by-elections as leader Nigel Farage boasts "something is happening here." The results come as a blow to the Conservatives in the Kent area as Reform continues to threaten them from the right. Labour will also be concerned that this is indicative of a broader disenfranchisement with the current Government. Reform secured the victories on Kent County Council and Dartford Borough Council. In Swanscombe and Greenhithe, Kent, Reform won 29% of the vote, up from just 1.6% last time out. Labour was second with 24.6% of the vote while the Tories languished in fourth with 15.6%. The two seats were previously held by the independent Swanscombe and Greenhithe Residents’ Association (SGRA). Thomas Mallon was the Reform UK candidate who will now take a seat on the council. Swanscombe & Greenhithe (Kent) Council By-Election Result: ➡️ RFM: 29.1% (+27.5) ?????? LAB: 24.6% (-7.5) ??????️ SGRA: 16.5% (-23.9) ?????? CON: 15.6% (-10.3) ?????? GRN: 12.4% (New) ?????? LDM: 1.8% (New) Reform GAIN from SGRA. Changes w/ 2021. On the Dartford Borough Council - in the Greenhithe & Knockhall ward - Reform came first with 31% of the vote. They were followed by the SGRA (27%). Labour and the Tories were both beaten to third place by the Greens. Reform's candidate here was Michael David Brown. Reacting to the results, Mr Farage said: “Obviously I am very pleased with the results from Kent. It is all the more pleasing because we did it from a virtual standing start and it reflects our new, professionalised approach. “Now we are going all out for Kent County Council next May and I will be addressing a dinner in Hythe tonight (Nov 22) to that effect. Something is happening out there.” Tory backbencher Cllr Sarah Hudson added: “This says that Reform UK is going to win a hell of a lot of seats next May at the election. "It might be a by-election but it’s indicative of things. It means the Tories are still not loved and the Labour Party are not loved either. “Reform UK are filling the void of where we should be and the voters are telling us that we can’t be trusted to do any of the things that we said we would do but didn’t.” An Ipsos poll released earlier this week found that Mr Farage holds a better favorability rating that the Prime Minister. Mr Farage was seen favourably by 28% and unfavorably by 48% – a net approval rating of -20 Sir Keir Starmer is liked by 23% and disliked by 52%, the poll found. This gave him a net approval rating of -29.
