Luigi Nicholas Mangione was arrested Monday in the Dec. 4 attack on Brian Thompson after they say a worker at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, alerted authorities to a customer who resembled the suspected gunman. When arrested, Mangione had on him a gun that investigators believe was used in the attack and writings expressing anger at corporate America, police said. As Mangione arrived at the courthouse Tuesday, he struggled with officers and shouted something that was partly unintelligible but referred to an “insult to the intelligence of the American people.” Mangione is being held on Pennsylvania charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm, forgery and providing false identification to police. Manhattan prosecutors have charged him with five counts, including murder, criminal possession of a weapon and criminal possession of a forged instrument. Here are some of the latest developments: Wearing an orange jumpsuit, Mangione mostly stared straight ahead during the hearing, occasionally consulting papers, rocking in his chair, or looking back at the gallery. At one point, he began to speak to respond to the court discussion but was quieted by his lawyer. Judge David Consiglio denied bail to Mangione, whose attorney, Thomas Dickey, told the court that his client did not agree to extradition and wants a hearing on the matter. Blair County (Pennsylvania) District Attorney Peter Weeks said that although Mangione’s fighting extradition will create “extra hoops” for law enforcement to jump through, it won’t be a substantial barrier to sending him to New York. He wrote that the U.S. has the most expensive health care system in the world and that the profits of major corporations continue to rise while “our life expectancy” does not, according to the bulletin, which was based on a review of the suspect’s hand-written notes and social media postings. The defendant appeared to view the targeted killing of the UnitedHealthcare CEO as a symbolic takedown and may have been inspired by “Unabomber” Ted Kaczynski, whom he called a “political revolutionary,” the document said. Police said the person who killed Thompson left a hostel on Manhattan’s Upper West Side at 5:41 a.m. on Dec. 4. Eleven minutes later, he was seen on surveillance video walking back and forth in front of the New York Hilton Midtown, wearing a distinctive backpack. At 6:44 a.m., he shot Thompson at a side entrance to the hotel, fled on foot, then climbed aboard a bicycle and within four minutes had entered Central Park, according to police. Another security camera recorded the gunman leaving the park near the American Museum of Natural History at 6:56 a.m. still on the bicycle but without the backpack, police said. After getting in a taxi, he headed north to a bus terminal near the George Washington Bridge, arriving at about 7:30 a.m. From there, the trail of video evidence ran cold. Police did not see video of the suspect exiting the building, leading them to believe he likely took a bus out of town. I am standing on a dune looking out to sea. It's 2024, but I'm thinking about a very different time. Hundreds of thousands of years ago this 350km stretch of southern African coast looked very different. It was home to giant zebra , bird species that are now extinct, giant tortoises and crocodiles . Our hominin ancestors roamed the area . We know some of these facts because of body fossils. But South Africa's Cape south coast is also home to another rich source of information, which our research team from the African Centre for Coastal Palaeoscience at Nelson Mandela University has documented over the past 15 years: fossilised tracksites. These trace fossils date to the Pleistocene epoch , with ages ranging from 400,000 years to 35,000 years . Most of them are preserved in a rock type known as aeolianite (cemented dune surfaces). googletag.cmd.push(function(){googletag.display('div-gpt-async-ad-inread-a');}); The tracksites are an example of what's known as geoheritage, which the Geological Society of South Africa calls a "descriptive term applied to sites (geosites) or areas of geologic features with significant scientific, educational, cultural, or aesthetic value". The importance of geoheritage is becoming increasingly recognised at a global level; for example, it is relevant to the United Nations' 2030 Agenda Sustainable Development goals , and Unesco's Global Geoparks "celebrate the links between geological heritage and all other types of heritage". Given our discoveries on the Cape south coast, as well as what other researchers have found in the West Coast National Park, about 120km outside Cape Town, it's clear that South Africa is home to some remarkable geoheritage. Read more: Gigantic wolverines, otters the size of wolves: fossils offer fresh insights into the past In a recently published scientific paper we outlined this geoheritage, examined the threats it faces from both nature and human interference, and suggested how it could be preserved. These sites have almost certainly come and gone over previous centuries and millennia without our knowledge. However, now that we know about them and can appreciate them, scientists and heritage authorities have an obligation to celebrate, protect and preserve them as vitally important geoheritage items, and to raise awareness about this precious, newly discovered resource. Threats The Cape coastal sites are threatened on many fronts. Cliff collapse events expose new sites, while known sites slump into the sea or are eroded rapidly by wind, high tides and storm surges. In addition, humans find these surfaces attractive and engrave graffiti into them, potentially damaging the precious fossil tracksites . Some are ancestral human trackways; others preserve patterns made by our ancestors on dune surfaces that may be some of the oldest examples of art . These patterns, which we've dubbed ammoglyphs, have been reported only on the Cape coast and nowhere else in the world. They are therefore of global heritage value. One site even contains the oldest known fossil footprint attributed to our own species. We know what to look for and we know these surfaces have the capacity to record this priceless heritage. We just need to be vigilant and keep visiting this coastline, especially after storm surges or cliff-collapse events. Managing the sites Mixed with this good fortune, however, come problems, questions, and management challenges. Which sites require active management, and how should they be ranked in importance? What is the scientific and heritage value of the sites? Is physical recovery possible by helicopter or four-wheel drive, or is replication through digital technology the most appropriate route to follow? And if physical recovery is possible, are there suitable repositories for specimens? What if nothing is done - how significant are the threats to a site's integrity, and how accessible or remote is it? At a global level, such checklists are surprisingly rare; we are aware of only two examples. We used these as a basis for our checklist, modifying their criteria to be applicable to the Cape coast. Criterion categories included a site's uniqueness and scientific value, threats in the current location, accessibility and feasibility of recovery, research and education value, and the potential for post-removal care. The resulting checklist forms the basis for constructive collaboration with management authorities like national parks, provincial nature reserves, municipalities or private landowners, as well as national and provincial heritage authorities. Good working relationships between these roleplayers and scientific researchers are key if geoheritage sites are to properly handled and preserved. The statement added that the Convention “creates an unprecedented platform for collaboration” in the of evidence, protection for victims and prevention, while safeguarding human rights online. “The Secretary-General trusts that the new treaty will promote a safe cyberspace and calls on States to join the Convention and to implement it in cooperation with relevant stakeholders.” Philemon Yang, President of the General , highlighted the importance of the new Convention. “We live in a digital , one where information and communications technologies have enormous potential for the development of societies, but also increases the potential threat of cybercrime,” he said. “With the adoption of this Convention, Member States have at hand the tools and means to strengthen international cooperation in preventing and combating cybercrime, protecting people and their rights online. ” The containing the Convention was adopted without a by the 193-member General . After forty-four years of a toxic relationship, the Iranians and Arabs are now dating each other. The regional heavyweights have decided to mend fences and begin a new chapter in their previously turbulent ties. On March 10, 2023, Iran and Saudi Arabia agreed after signing an agreement in Beijing. Midwifed by China, the deal is groundbreaking because it ended a seven-year deadlock. Iran and Saudi Arabia have long vied for regional dominance. Since the 1979 Iranian Revolution, the Iran-Saudi rivalry has had catastrophic consequences for the West Asian region. The deadliest conflicts in Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Lebanon, and Bahrain have degenerated into intractable proxy wars—tearing these societies apart. Imperialist interventions have added fuel to the fire. Iran-Saudi escalations peaked in January 2016 when Saudi Arabia executed prominent Shia cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr on “terrorism” charges (Nimr al-Nimr was a vocal critic of the Saudi government). Iranian protesters stormed the Saudi embassy in Tehran, prompting Saudi Arabia to downgrade its diplomatic ties with Iran. The Iran-Saudi agreement—with China as the matchmaker—expresses a ‘shared desire to resolve disagreements through dialogue and diplomacy,’ emphasizing respect for state sovereignty and “non-interference” in each other’s affairs. The deal—a diplomatic coup by China—can have a domino effect, promoting peace and cooperation among Persian Gulf nations and beyond. Let me address the main point I raised in the title: the epistemic violence of the Shia-Sunni discourse. Western leaders, academia, the media, and think tanks often frame this conflict through a sectarian lens, casting the Iran-Saudi rivalry as an ethnic and sectarian dispute between Sunni Arabs and Shia Iranians or as a “clash of civilizations.” This understanding oversimplifies the complexity of the decades-long conflict. “Modern nationalism,” geopolitics, and geostrategic factors equally shape the rivalry (not religion per se) between the two political heavyweights. The Iran and Saudi Arabia discord “has nothing to do with the Sunni-Shia divide in Islamic theology.” The animosity between the two energy titans stems not from Islamic theology but from their shared quest for regional dominance (power projections), security, and survival. Discourses unleash epistemic violence. By perpetuating these sectarian narratives, the West has further poisoned Iran-Saudi relations, leading to escalations. The dominant narrative amplified by Western media portrays an Islamic Iran that seeks to ‘export’ the Revolution. Such narratives ignore the pragmatism in Iran’s foreign policy. Those who view Islamic ideology as the primary determinant of Iran’s foreign policy fail to recognize the ideological flexibility embedded in both Islamic culture and the Shi’i tradition. The March 2023 agreement highlights the dominance of pragmatism over ideology, much like the 2015 nuclear deal Iran signed with the U.S. (the “Great Satan,” a sobriquet Iran uses for America). It demonstrates Iran’s capacity to prioritize pragmatism over ideology. The argument that the Shia-Sunni binary or a clash of ideologies makes rapprochement between Iran and Saudi Arabia impossible is a distorted narrative. There is a historical precedent for Iran-U.S. détente. Since the 1990s, Iranian presidents have made similar diplomatic overtures to Saudi Arabia. In 1997, Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah bin Abdul-Aziz visited Tehran, leading to a bilateral cooperation and security agreement until 2005. Not only ideology but pragmatism also shapes Iranian foreign policy thinking. “Cultural maturation” has led Iran’s foreign policy to shift increasingly away from religious ideology toward pragmatic calculations of national interest. The March 2023 agreement has undermined the axis of confrontation—the so-called 2020 Abraham Accords—designed to contain and isolate Iran. The nascent axis of brotherly nations of Iran and Saudi Arabia has become a countervailing force against the impending regional war triggered by Israel’s genocidal assaults on Gaza and Lebanon. The Iran-Saudi tension has had a ripple effect in the region. It has helped stabilize Yemen. Since October 2022, a truce supported by both Iran and Saudi Arabia has been in place in Yemen. It has rehabilitated Syria within the Arab world; Iran’s relations with the UAE, Turkey, Egypt, Jordan, Bahrain, and Kuwait have all been restored. The thaw in Saudi-Iran relations has averted a major war between Iran and Israel, as the Persian Gulf nations have pledged not to allow Israel to use their “soil or airspace” to attack Iran. This deal has the potential to transform the region. However, the odds remain high. The litmus test will be how both sides manage expectations, compartmentalize issues, and demonstrate ideological flexibility.
