In 2004, Sachin Tendulkar shelved the cover drive on his way to a famous unbeaten double century in Sydney. Virat Kohli may have to follow suit if he is to bow out of Test cricket on his own terms. At a glance, Kohli, 36, has the numbers of a player who is gone, but this is not one of the cases where if it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then it probably is a duck. Virat Kohli departs the MCG on Monday, caught in the cordon again. Credit: AP Unlike Rohit Sharma, whose game looks completely off, Kohli’s issue is a question of technique and temperament. Kohli is still in pristine physical condition. But while his eyes and reflexes may not be as sharp as they once were, it’s a lack of discipline that is hurting him most. Kohli’s career has been built on control, but he is now having trouble suppressing his natural urges, whether it’s ignoring hecklers in the crowd, picking blues with a teenaged debutant or, most obviously, balls outside off stump. All six of Kohli’s dismissals this series have come to catches behind the wicket. His unbeaten ton in the second innings in Perth, when India were already in an unassailable position when he batted, was as close to a junk-time Test century as you can get. His 100 not out is an outlier in a campaign that has also produced scores of 5, 7, 11, 3, 36 and 5. His series average of 27.83 is in keeping with the 31.32 he has averaged in 38 games since the start of 2020. If he was not Virat Kohli, he’d have been dropped a long time ago. The Australians would never say this publicly out of respect for Kohli, and probably fear of Mother Cricket, but they know they have Kohli’s measure. Bowl the ball in the fourth and fifth stump channel outside off, perhaps even wider, and wait for the nick to come. “Well that’s the line I’ve been talking about the whole series. Get it wide and get it full. That’s the sixth time Mitch Starc’s gotten Virat Kohli in Test cricket. The trap was set. The bait was thrown out there and the big fish has fallen for it,” former Australia captain Ricky Ponting said on Seven. With the exception of his century in Perth, when the fizz had gone from the game, the closest Kohli has come to resisting temptation came on the second day of this Test when he made the Australians bowl at him. By ignoring balls outside off stump, he dragged Australia’s lines closer to his pads and scored through the leg side. The drives he played were aimed as close to the bowler as he could instead of the gaping hole, greater than the length of a centre square in the MCG’s winter configuration, between mid-off and gully. His extravagant drive at Mitchell Starc from the final ball before lunch on Monday was directed through cover. Tendulkar, India’s last batting demi-god, provided the template for Kohli. Twenty-one years ago in Sydney, unhappy with being caught behind the wicket earlier in the series, Tendulkar did not hit a boundary through cover in his 241 not out. The plan was devised after a conversation with his brother, who told him his weakness was a matter of shot selection rather than technique. Loading “I need discipline to be in the driving seat,” Tendulkar said in an interview published on his Facebook page in 2021. “My natural instincts, they have to be sitting in the passenger’s seat. “I suddenly realised all the bowlers are bowling in that corridor on the sixth stump, not even fourth stump. If you are going to keep bowling away from me and frustrate me, I’m going to take on this challenge and frustrate you. It’s one versus 11, let’s see who loses patience first. I’m not going to play a single cover drive.” Steve Waugh did it with the hook shot, but warehousing a stroke that has produced so many runs for a batter requires the discipline of a monk. The confidence and self-belief that has driven Kohli through his career will tell him he still can play that shot well. The habits of a lifetime also die hard. “He’s done it so much over the years, its become muscle memory for him – cover drive, cover drive, cover drive,” former Australia opener Simon Katich said on SEN. Loading This should not be unfamiliar territory for Kohli. On his miserable tour of England in 2014 when he was tormented by James Anderson, Kohli was caught by the wicketkeeper or in the cordon in seven of his 10 innings. Four years later, he averaged nearly 60. The difference? “He left it a lot better and he was a lot more patient,” Anderson told the Test Match Special podcast in 2020. “He waited for you to bowl at him, and then he’s very strong off his legs so he could score freely.” Kohli knows what to do, it’s a matter of whether still can. The Defective Block Schemes have left many homeowners, particularly in Donegal, facing significant challenges and frustrations. Despite years of lobbying and adjustments to the scheme, it remains a maze of bureaucracy, financial shortfalls, and logistical hurdles for affected families. Here’s a breakdown of the key issues and the current state of the scheme: The Timeline and Background As of November 2024, DCB Grant Office Scheme’s impact remains limited: The 100 % Redress Party states that 318 may not necessarily be ‘undergoing’, as there is no guarantee that people will get the capital needed to progress and equate completion. The 100 % Redress Party states 195 offers include downgrades contrary to the Science. The findings of which we have for over a year The 100 % Redress Party states, 10% of affected homeowners’, is not reflective of the tens of thousands affected but can’t even access the scheme for a variety of reasons including working capital, shortfall, disability, accommodation etc. Key Barriers o Complexity : Homeowners must navigate an overwhelming amount of paperwork, online forms, and eligibility requirements. o Overburdening : For some, this is unmanageable, leaving many to abandon the process despite dire need. o Despite an increased cap of €462,000 (plus SEAI grants), costs like: ▪ New foundations (€15,000+) ▪ Project management and engineering fees (€17,000+) ▪ Demolition (€27,500) o These are inadequately covered or excluded, leaving homeowners with deficits averaging €100,000+ . o Government rates for square footage and materials lag behind market prices, forcing homeowners to either downgrade rebuilding efforts or face mounting debt. projects moving in relation to stage payments and system delays to date. o For many, replacing foundations or redesigning homes becomes unavoidable based on scientific assessments, requiring resubmission for planning permission and additional costs. Impacts on Homeowners Moving Forward: Calls for Reform To address these ongoing challenges, affected communities, advocates, and political figures must push for: Sample Homeowner Evidence based Issues o Jane from Finn Valley area waited months for reimbursed fees. Even after grant approval, homeowners face logistical delays and additional expenses before any remediation begins. In this instance, Jane will be approximately €50,000 in deficit without a block laid for her new build. She highlights the huge time lost in trying to collate information, seek professional services and understand elements of construction and energy upgrading. Jane states “ I am pushing to demolish but with a heavy heart as the same size bespoke design was just not workable financially. I could not replace it for the grant amount approved” Jane adopted a basic design that still leaves shortfall of approximately €100,000. o Martin from Letterkenny has a 4 bed home and has to demolish under the current scheme. However, to his detriment he also can’t proceed stating “to build same size house and same design, it will leave a shortfall of €160,000”. The defective block debacle in Donegal remains a stark example of how bureaucratic inefficiencies can amplify a crisis. For families like Jane’s, the dream of rebuilding like for like seems increasingly out of reach, even with government promises. It’s imperative that policymakers bridge the gap between intent and implementation to deliver real relief to those most affected.

England power plant in Beesleys Point, few details of the plan have yet been made public. But plans do include a hotel at least 60 feet tall. In fact, that height may be required under the amended township ordinance. It’s the opposite of the usual zoning efforts, Mayor Jay Newman said at the Thursday meeting of the township Planning Board, at which the board approved a resolution supporting the change. Newman also serves as a member of the Planning Board. More often, local rules aim to limit height for new development, not require it, Newman said. The reason relates to state development rules, James Maley, consultant for the township, explained at the meeting. The unanimous vote Thursday found the proposed changes do not conflict with the township's master plan, a necessary step toward approval. Maley has been working with the township on redevelopment plans for the sprawling site on the shores of the Great Egg Harbor Bay. The site is owned by the Beesleys Point Development Group LLC; as Maley put it to the Planning Board, the people who have been doing all of the demolition at the site. Upper Township officials have been in talks with Beesley’s Point Development Group LLC about the future of the site of the former B.L. England power plant. The most recent update appears to be that talks will continue. The development group has spent millions of dollars on remediation at the property, including the removal of the former smokestack, a huge cooling tower and the plant itself in a series of implosions. Chad Parks, an executive vice president with the development company, did not immediately respond to a request for comment Friday. The township has declared the site an area in need of redevelopment, which allows towns greater leeway to negotiate with developers. As Planning Board Chair Sean Whelan explained after the meeting, the designation provides greater flexibility for communities working to encourage projects in specific areas. There have been other redevelopment areas declared in Upper Township, including in the Marmora town center, and one is under consideration for Seaville in the area near Routes 9 and 50. Middle Township has also used the tool extensively, and it is part of the consideration for a new hotel in Ocean City, proposed for the site of the former Gillian's Wonderland. The most recent ordinance, introduced in October and set for a public hearing Monday, will include the amended height requirement, and change the word “hotel” to “buildings,” Maley told the board. The height requirement will apply to a specific area of the site, close to the water. The total property covers hundreds of acres, including the former plant site, a disused golf course, woods and wetlands. Maley told the board there will be extensive opportunities for discussion and public comment, and that the final proposal for the property will need to come before the Planning Board for a site plan review. Upper Township Committee on Monday approved an $80,000 contract, backed by a federal grant, to look at the possibility of adding a sewer system to the Beesleys Point and Marmora sections of the township. Currently, there are no sewers in the township, with homes and businesses relying in septic systems. For now, the township has not seen a plan for the site, Newman said after the meeting. The township has been in steady talks with representatives of the developer, and in September, the Township Committee approved a resolution allowing the talks to continue for another 180 days. The township approved the initial agreement to negotiate a development deal with Beesleys Point Development Group in March 2022. Maley said the developer faces a time crunch, trying to get an application filed with the state and the CAFRA review underway before proposed new flood protection rules take effect, which could be approved next year. But the concept plans are not finalized to the point where they can be submitted as part of an application. “They’re not far enough along in their concept plan, so they will have zoning to show it,” Maley said. Few details of the plans have been confirmed. Maley mentioned residential buildings and a hotel at the Thursday meeting, and at other public meetings, the possibility of single-family homes, a restaurant and a marina have been mentioned. As Maley explained it, the designation of the area as being in need of redevelopment allows the township flexibility on local zoning standards, potentially avoiding the need for variances for the use, building size or other limits. But it does not impact state development rules or the CAFRA review. The coal- and diesel-fired power plant operated from 1961 until May 2019. The site was declared an area in need of redevelopment in January 2021. Asian shares were mixed on Monday after stocks fell broadly on Friday as Wall Street closed out a holiday-shortened week on a down note. U.S. futures were lower while oil prices were little changed. In Asia, South Korea’s Kospi added 0.6% to 2,418.80. But shares of Jeju Air Co. lost 8.8% after one of the company’s jets skidded off a runway , slammed into a concrete fence and burst into flames Sunday in South Korea as its landing gear failed to deploy. 179 people died in the crash. Political turmoil continued as South Korean law enforcement officials requested a court warrant on Monday to detain impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol. Tokyo’s Nikkei 225 index lost 0.9% to 39,914.21 as the dollar gained against the Japanese yen, trading at 157.83 yen, up from 157.75 yen. The Tokyo market will wrap up trading for 2024 with a yearend ceremony as Japan begins its New Year holidays, the biggest festival of the year. The Hang Seng in Hong Kong shed 0.3% to 20,030.63 while the Shanghai Composite index was up 0.3% at 3,408.72. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 dipped 0.9% to 8,191.50. On Friday, the S&P 500 fell 1.1% to 5,970.84. Roughly 90% of stocks in the benchmark index lost ground, but it managed to hold onto a modest gain of 0.7% for the week. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.8% to 42,992.21. The tech-heavy Nasdaq composite fell 1.5%, to 19,722.03. The losses were made worse by sharp declines for the Big Tech stocks known as the “Magnificent 7”, which can heavily influence the direction of the market because of their large size. A wide range of retailers also fell. Amazon fell 1.5% and Best Buy slipped 1.5%. The sector is being closely watched for clues on how it performed during the holiday shopping season. The S&P 500 gained nearly 3% over a 3-day stretch before breaking for the Christmas holiday. On Thursday, the index posted a small decline. Despite Friday's drop, the market is moving closer to another standout annual finish . The S&P 500 is on track for a gain of around 25% in 2024. That would mark a second consecutive yearly gain of more than 20%, the first time that has happened since 1997-1998. The gains have been driven partly by upbeat economic data showing that consumers continued spending and the labor market remained strong. Inflation, while still high, has also been steadily easing. A report on Friday showed that sales and inventory estimates for the wholesales trade industry fell 0.2% in November, following a slight gain in October. That weaker-than-expected report follows an update on the labor market Thursday that showed unemployment benefits held steady last week. The stream of upbeat economic data and easing inflation helped prompt a reversal in the Federal Reserve's interest rate policy this year. Expectations for interest rate cuts also helped drive market gains. The central bank recently delivered its third cut to interest rates in 2024. Even though inflation has come closer to the central bank's target of 2%, it remains stubbornly above that mark and worries about it heating up again have tempered the forecast for more interest rate cuts. Inflation concerns have added to uncertainties heading into 2025, which include the labor market’s path ahead and shifting economic policies under incoming President Donald Trump. Worries have risen that Trump’s preference for tariffs and other policies could lead to higher inflation , a bigger U.S. government debt and difficulties for global trade. In other dealings early Monday, U.S. benchmark crude oil picked up 1 cent to $70.61 per barrel. Brent crude, the international standard, lost 1 cent to $73.78 per barrel.
