Additional finding to strengthen credit unions has been announced by the Welsh Government. In the run up to Christmas, the Welsh Government is providing an additional £408,719 to credit unions, which offer a safety net for individuals and families who need access to fair and affordable lending during challenging times. By increasing the funding for the nine credit unions operating in all parts of Wales, the Welsh Government is making these services more accessible. Cabinet secretary for social justice Jane Hutt said: “Life can be unpredictable, and people shouldn’t have to worry about where they can turn if an emergency arises. "Christmas can be an especially costly time, and I would encourage those struggling with their finances, who may be at risk from high-interest doorstep lenders or loan sharks, to instead consider their local credit union, which can provide access to fair and affordable credit. “This additional funding will strengthen the support credit unions offer in communities across Wales, helping people not only manage today but also build financial resilience for the future.” Since 2022, the Welsh Government has committed £1.2 million to credit unions to expand their lending by offering new ‘starter’ loans and ‘credit builder’ loans, helping more than 3,600 people access affordable loans for the first time. This latest funding will further expand credit union services, providing valuable support for both new and returning members throughout the winter. One of the credit unions benefiting from the investment is Smart Money Cymru, which operated across the Caerphilly, Blaenau Gwent and Newport areas. The Welsh Government has also invested £637,000 in digital improvements for credit unions, ensuring they can offer online services comparable to those provided by banks. I’m in this neck of the woods at least once or twice a year (partly thanks to local friends) but hadn’t ever visited the peaceful town of Lynton on the Exmoor coast until a few months ago. It’s got buckets of charm and the dog-friendly apartments at Tors Park offer unbeatable views of a windswept bay. I took up running earlier this year and my dog Dora and I relished the chance to explore some of the most scenic coastal paths in the UK – with a few pub pit-stops along the way, too, of course. For those planning to visit Cornwall , the 18-mile Camel Trail is a must. If you’re not a runner, walk it or hire a bike from one of the rental stores in Wade-bridge, close to the trail. Yes, the traditional hotels and brasseries are still there, but so are many cool and innovative new bars, shops and more. Staying in the Molitor on the outskirts of town was a prime example — it’s a posh place but not old-school-Paris stuffy, with an amazing art deco pool and a lively rooftop bar and restaurant. We were there to attend the annual summer music festival Rock En Seine, with the UK producer Fred Again headlining on the night we attended, and the buzz of the twenty and thirty-something Parisians was that of a city that knows it has its mojo back. Following some of their recommendations, we headed into the previously overlooked 11th and 18th arrondissements on our second night — the cool, Shoreditch-like parts of the city. We dined on fusion tapas at Pantobaguette where the DJ is as good as the food, and Bambino, a chic restaurant-cocktail bar where records line the walls. We topped off our trip with a visit to one of Paris’s legendary flea markets on the edge of the city, Marche aux Puces de la Porte de Vanves, for extremely affordable vintage jewellery and homeware, that, thanks to the Eurostar , we could lug back home without extra baggage charges. HOPE BROTHERTON Travel Reporter THAILAND I SPENT most of 2024 stomping through European cities such as Stockholm , Vienna , Ljubljana and Florence . But while Europe has my heart, I also left a slice in Khao Sok National Park after a dream trip to Thailand with TUI in March. Specifically, I’ll never forget the moment I came face to face with an elephant at Elephant Hills. The luxury tented jungle camp has its own elephant sanctuary where holidaymakers can meet these magnificent creatures in a safe and protected environment. Visitors prepare a medley of snacks such as bananas, sugar canes and pineapple wedges for the elephants to eat before watching them bathe and lounge in the safety of the sanctuary. The whole experience feels almost otherworldly. Elephant Hills puts on other activities, too, such as a jungle trek, a kayak tour along the Sok River and an excursion to Cheow Lan Lake to visit the Lake Camp, where you can paddleboard, kayak and swim. And nothing felt strenuous because I spent my free time relaxing in a rather bougie glamping tent. It had an outside porch with a hammock and wicker rocking chairs as well as an en-suite bathroom. There was also a huge dining area where guests gathered to eat meals and a small pool to cool off in the heat. Put simply, my trip was heaven on earth and I don’t think it will be topped for a long while. But one destination where I was reminded of how fantastic the place is was Amsterdam . Returning to the Dutch city after ten years, I escaped the crowds by checking out its Noord district, which is a quick, free ferry ride from the main train station. It’s here that I found a fantastic bar scene — set to be the next big thing, or so I’m told — as well as a thriving art community and even the neighbourhood’s own “beach” behind a trendy warehouse restaurant. Dubbed the Brooklyn of Amsterdam, this is a place that makes you feel cooler than you really are, while surrounded by red-brick galleries and giant murals. New research shows restaurant chains and food concepts are helping shopping malls regain their footing, driving consumers to the once-struggling spaces. The data from Yelp shows restaurants have become a driving force in this ever-changing retail landscape, helping to catapult visitor numbers above pre-pandemic levels at malls. Shoppers grab a bite to eat and then spend their money at various businesses before and after they dine out — creating a bounce-back effect for what has often been dubbed a "struggling industry." Days of packed shopping malls are beginning to return, but they look a bit different than what we were used to in the 1990s and early 2000s. More are on the way, including a Texas Roadhouse in the near future. "Five times more traffic," Tony Ke, the owner of TJ Hibachi and Sushi said. Ke said through the ups and downs of the coronavirus pandemic, and many folks opting for online shopping over the years, things are finally turning around. He said business is booming with five times more traffic in the mall food court than in years past. "It's really getting better and better," Ke said. And he's not alone. Scripps News Cleveland followed through and spoke with Beverly Bolton, owner of Fortune's Cookies. The self-proclaimed community baker and Cleveland-area mom took a gamble, opening her first brick-and-mortar inside Great Northern a year ago. "It's been an adventure, but better than I expected," Bolton said. The local cookie shop has become so popular that she's been scouted to fill that nostalgic mall cookie void. "We've had some other malls approach us. Actually, use the space where Mrs. Fields used to be in," Bolton said. The organization that tracks retail foot traffic reports the primary reason is restaurants and food concepts in malls. They are up 7% from 2019 to 2024. Yelp recently released a report of the top 25 mall brands, and 17 of the top 25 mall brands are restaurant chains: Cheesecake Factory at number 1 BJ's Restaurant and Brewhouse at 4 Starbucks at 6 Olive Garden at 7 Panera at 10 Chili's at 21 Food concepts are a driving force as well. This includes Filipino, Vegan and specifically Bubble Teas —which are up 100% over the last five years, according to Yelp. Michael Goldberg, a professor in the Department of Design Innovation at the Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University, said a generation that has virtually lived online plays a critical role in the process. "Many Americans, particularly younger Americans, are focused on experiences and nothing is better than sharing food with friends," Goldberg said. Young social media influencers are eating food on camera, providing reviews and driving people to dive in and try the food. The TikTok generation has given a major boost to once-struggling brands and revived them tenfold. Case in point: Chili's Triple Dipper. "The thought that Chili's is back and being driven by influencer videos on TikTok is quite fascinating and, you know, I mean, there is a nostalgia for brands," Goldberg said. Localized community programming and holiday events like pictures with Santa are a mainstay at malls like Great Northern. Lori Weidleman, who has been cranking out pretzels at Auntie Anne's since 1997, said change is constant. However, she added it's become apparent people will pay for a quality product that takes them back to a special moment in life. "Ohio's doing really good. We're strong and beating our goals and our targets. And it's multi-generational interest," Weidleman said.
