#ubet63 Cuala 1-14 St Mary’s Ardee 2-10 They may have only had the honour to themselves for little over an hour, but it doesn’t diminish Cuala’s achievement. Their close-run victory over St Mary’s Ardee in the Leinster club football final made them the first club to win the provincial senior title in both codes after their hurlers led the way in 2016 and ‘17, though in the second game of the Croke Park double bill, Na Fianna emulated them by winning the hurling title to add to their football crown from way back in 1999. “It’s unbelievable,” said midfielder Peadar Ó Cofaigh Byrne of the achievement. “I didn't actually know about that, I don't think many of the lads did. The week was so quick, we only played Tullamore last week. So we weren't really thinking of that but at the same time it is an amazing achievement and we don't take that for granted.” READ MORE: Dublin midfielder sounds note of caution as new football rules sweep through Special Congress READ MORE: Jim Gavin hails 'Great opportunity for football' and says, 'Negativity surprises me' Although there isn’t a big overlap between their hurlers and footballers, the culture that had been developed in the club by the hurlers’ successes counted for something, said the big midfielder. “I’m not sure if it stood to us but it did 100% for the support we had. There’s a lot of people out there who would have done all that organising a couple of years ago out organising trains and buses and 100%, we get a huge lift from every person that is out there. “It is really a thing we are really aware of and going home seeing all the flags and everyone out and pushing us on, which is great and getting the train and it’s packed, that's something that has definitely stood to us. “The support is there we just needed a reason to come out and support us and we've done that.” Cuala were anything but comfortable winners in the end, despite leading by nine points after 20 minutes as they built up a 1-6 to 0-0 advantage, with Con O’Callaghan hitting three of their points and setting up Conor O’Brien for the goal. St Mary’s finally found their scoring range, slotting three frees in quick succession but they still trailed 1-7 to 0-3 at the break and it was only after the black-carding of Eoin Kennedy in the 46th minute that their challenge ignited. Two goals in a minute from sub Ryan Rooney and Sean Callaghan levelled the game and, in a breathless finish, O’Callaghan and Rooney missed scoreable chances at either end before Luke Keating kicked the winning point from a free, won by Mick Fitzsimons, in injury time. “Our whole season as Peadar will attest to is built on having courage and going for it and sticking to our principles,” said Cuala boss Austin O’Callaghan. “The game will come at you and challenge you in all sorts of ways but it is about sticking to your principles and having the presence of mind and I thought to a man they done that. There was some brilliant interceptions and blocks and when we got the chance at the end to kill it, Luke took it, which was great.” CUALA: R Scollard; D Conroy, M Fitzsimons (0-1), E O’Callaghan; E Kennedy (0-1), C McMorrow (0-1), D O’Dowd; P Ó Cofaigh Byrne, P Duffy; C Dunne, C O’Brien (1-1), C Doran (0-1); L Keating (0-3, 0-2f), N O’Callaghan (0-2), C O’Callaghan (0-4, 0-2f). GTA 6 developer teases 'cutting-edge' tech, 'procedural generation' for objects, environments - TweakTown

I’m no linguistic purist. My brother and I exclaim “YOLO!” (you only live once) to each other, as in, “I backed into our neighbour’s car, and we didn’t realise our insurance had expired, YOLO!” Or: “Modern life is exhausting. My brain feels like a lab rat owned by sadistic scientists with an unhealthy zeal for electricity. YOLO!” Sometimes I’ll add “AF” to the end of a sentence in front of unsuspecting parents, such as, “I’m tired AF.” (The A stands for “as” and, yes, the F stands for what you think it does. Google it.) Inventing words is old-school, but let’s do it with panache. Credit: Getty Images/iStock So, no, I’m no purist. But I was feeling a little curmudgeonly upon hearing Macquarie Dictionary’s announcement that its word of the year is enshittification . This added to a list of viral internet-speak words that have topped its charts in recent years ( cozzie livs , brat , menty b ). It’s either an attempt to appeal to a younger generation or a depressing reflection of our internet babel, whereby trending words are spat out haphazardly for their 15 minutes of fame, enshittifying the language, like Frankenstein creations. Sure, enshittification is the invention of a bona fide writer, Cory Doctorow. He came up with it last year to describe what happens to social media platforms over time, which is fairly accurate. However, I’m still holding Doctorow responsible for adding to the very enshittification of our language. I know that language is an evolving beast, and evolution can be fun. Just ask my teenage drama students, who fell into hysterical laughter when I repeated the word “skibidi”. I’m still unsure what it means, but I assume it’s some derogatory term for boring adults with health insurance. My great aunt was fluent in Anglo-Saxon, or Old English. She would pore over ancient texts like Beowulf , unlocking their meaning, when she wasn’t slipping me a copy of Harry Potter unbeknown to my religious grandparents, who disapproved of it. I often wonder how she would feel about the development of “internet speak” as someone who spent her life immersed in ancient languages, writing academic papers with scintillating titles such as “ Spatial perception and conceptions in the (re-)presenting and (re-)constructing of Old English texts ”. Would she be “skibidi-ing” and “YOLO-ing” with the rest of us, harbouring the knowledge that language is always evolving? Or would she be having a menty b (mental breakdown) in her grave? We’ve always made up words, such as Shakespeare ’s “admirable”, “zany” or “kicky-wicky” (meaning “housewife”, which never caught on, maybe stopped in its tracks by the suffragettes). And then there’s Roald Dahl’s cornucopia of absurd words such as “gobblefunk”, “trogglehumper” or “delumptious”, which also didn’t infiltrate the collective lexicon or make Macquarie Dictionary’s word of the year. “People deliberately invent new words,” Steven Milthen writes in his book The Language Puzzle , “and may consciously change their way of speaking to forge their social and cultural identity, even if this involves more rather than less effort and makes their utterances more difficult to understand.” And Gen Z is having a field day with it. But there’s something so hollow and lazy about internet-speak, and I wonder if it’s because we’ve lost our sense of poetry. John Koenig, author of The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows , created words to describe nuanced feelings and ways of being. Take altschmerz , which he defines as “a sense of weariness with the same old problems that you’ve always had, the same boring issues and anxieties you’ve been gnawing on for decades, which makes you want to spit them out and dig up fresher pain you might have buried in your mental backyard”. (It’s from the German alt (old) and schmerz (pain). Isn’t that more beautiful than enshittification? It’s more German, at least. The medium is the message, and the message of the internet is viral soundbites and memes that capture our depleted attention for 15 seconds, driven by algorithms. I want words born in the minds of eccentric creatives and poets, not bored teenagers glued to their phones. Will we really yell “SLAY!” – as in, “You killed it!” Not literally – at our grandkids on the sports field? Or will it have been replaced by some other skibidi babble? Give me Beowulf any day: that can slay. Literally. Cherie Gilmour is a freelance writer. Get a weekly wrap of views that will challenge, champion and inform your own. Huntington Bancshares Inc. stock underperforms Thursday when compared to competitors despite daily gains

With the prosecutor calling the case one of the most depraved of his career, Maurice Thomas was sentenced to 205 years to 252 years in prison Thursday. "In short, judge, Mr. Thomas is evil in the purest and simplest biblical sense of that word," Deputy Lancaster County Attorney Jason Cooper said first, calling for a life sentence. Maurice Thomas' attorney, Jon Braaten, stood on his denial of the allegations, opting not to say anything at sentencing. Thomas, 44, had faced a mandatory minimum term of 70 years on five felony charges for the sexual abuse of three young girls under the age of 10. Thomas Last month, a Lancaster County jury found him guilty of two counts of first-degree sexual assault of a child, one count of third-degree sexual assault of a child, generation and possession of visual depictions of child sexual abuse. People are also reading... Cooper, the prosecutor, said while Thomas, an eight-time convicted felon out of jail on bond for contributing to the delinquency of a minor, sexually assaulted 7-, 8- and 9-year-old girls multiple times over the course of a year just after being released for an 18- to 30-year prison sentence on theft and forgery charges. "These assaults were as cruel as they were relentless," he said. In court records, Lincoln police said that on May 30, 2023, an officer was flagged down in the street by the mother of three girls wanting to report the abuse. In an interview that followed at the BraveBe Child Advocacy Center, the oldest of the girls said the abuse had started a year earlier when Thomas asked her to kiss him and threatened to shoot her if she said no. In separate interviews, the girls described multiple incidents of sexual abuse at the hands of Thomas, a friend of the family. On Thursday, Cooper said Thomas offered some of the girls drugs or threatened them with violence and was found with hundreds of severely graphic images of sexual abuse on his phone. "And that's just trial," he said. Then there were the uncharged allegations. Thomas was accused of forcibly raping an 18-year-old woman, recording her while she cried and begged him to stop, and a 15-year-old runaway. He said one of Thomas's victims cried in a conference room months before trial, feeling the weight of the responsibility to protect her sisters. Another froze at the courtroom door at the thought of being in the same room with Thomas, "but bravely told the jury what happened." Cooper said, despite a jury finding Thomas guilty on all counts and Thomas being clearly depicted in videos committing several of the acts, Thomas takes no responsibility. In a presentence interview, Thomas said: "It's all lies." "I'm getting life for some s*** I didn't do," he reportedly said. Cooper called Thomas a serial child rapist and said he "did more damage in a year than most criminals can do in a lifetime." "He deserves much more than to spend the rest of his life in prison, so please don't give him anything less," he told Lancaster County District Judge Matthew Mellor. Mellor said there isn't much more nefarious than what Thomas has done. "What's even more signaling to this court ... is that you have never and will never take control of your sexual urges," the judge said, referring to Thomas making sexual advances on the female probation officer during his presentence interview. He said he is under no impression it would ever stop. "What weighs heaviest though is you've taken something from these victims that they'll never get back, and that's immeasurable," Mellor said, handing down the sentence. A woman in the front row clapped as guards moved to escort Thomas out. Thyme Care Projects 4x Growth in 2025 as Demand for Value-Based Oncology Care Surges; New Partnerships Bring Comprehensive Cancer Care Support to Over 40,000 Patients Across the Nation

CHENNAI : In all of phase II, the sharpest curve of 127.55-metre radius in Porur, the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) will begin testing driverless trains before April 2025. This is part of the first phase of commissioning from Poonamallee to Porur junction on corridor 4, which is likely to be completed by December next year. Also, CMRL achieves a unique feat by marking the first among all Metro Rail projects in India to design the composite girders, which carry rail tracks in a curved manner at Porur. Following suit, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is adopting the same design for its construction in Patna. “The DMRC has already completed the design for construction in Patna. Such a design is first in India but exists in Seoul, South Korea,” said T Archunan, director of projects (DP), CMRL. Corridor 4 (stretching 26.1 km from Light House to Poonamallee Bypass) is a priority corridor in phase II construction. The CMRL is already expediting work in this elevated line by laying tracks. Speaking to DT Next, a CMRL official stated, “Testing at this stretch will begin before April 2025. And, importantly testing of the rolling stock coupled with the track will be done at the sharpest curve during the same period.” At the stretch to be operated next year, the trains will pass through 10 Metro stations: Poonamallee Bypass, Poonamallee, Mullaithottam, Karayanchavadi, Kumananchavadi, Kattupakkam, Iyyappanthangal, Thelliyaragaram, Porur Bypass and Porur Junction. “The work at Mullaithottam and Kattupakkam is still underway. Once completed, the trains (on a straight line here) will be tested at a maximum speed of 90 km/h. At the Porur curve, trains will be tested at the speed of 45-50 km/h. But, the average commercial speed of trains in phase II will be at 35 km/h,” explained Archunan. “For testing at the sharpest curve in Porur, check rails will be installed near the tracks as per safety norms.” Almost five months prior to testing, CMRL has completed the erection of a composite girder on the elevated line in Porur along with contractor L&T and general consultant AEON. But, due to lack of space and heavy utilities, the CMRL and team, to prevent further land acquisition and demolition of buildings in Porur, planned the design in a curved manner (over the Porur flyover) and began erecting the steel portal beams (an element of viaduct) at that particular junction in August. Rekha Prakash, chief general manager (planning and design), CMRL, explained, “To minimise land acquisition by the side of the flyover, which is lined with multi-storied buildings, the alignment was revised with a sharper curve of 127.55-metre radius.” Steel composite girders are proposed to reduce the overall weight of the structural elements by 40%. “The girders were placed in a skew (to distort it from its original shape) and positioned on either side of the flyover without hindrance to traffic flow on Porur flyover. The complete spans were erected in four months,” she said. Transported from Bhopal, the girders of eight spans (the centre distance between two piers) have been erected with a combined weight of 2,415 tons above Porur flyover (also called MGR flyover). The design was chosen to address spans ranging between 25 and 49.42 metres. In phase II, which comprises 300 curves, Porur is the sharpest curve, followed by Koyambedu with a 127-metre radius and Alandur with 126-metre radius. As per required standards, the radius of the curve cannot dip below 120 metre-radius, pointed out CMRL officials. Corridor 5 between Madhavaram and Sholinganallur (44.6 km) has a maximum number of curves.None
