Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) reversed the sentiment in the market and started to infuse funds in the equities market in December. This infusion came after the investors dumped equities in the last two months, reported PTI. This comeback from the investors was attributed to the stabilising global conditions and anticipations of a possible rate cut from the Federal Reserve. Notably, investors pulled out Rs 21,612 crore from equities in November and a massive Rs 94,017 crore in October, which was the worst monthly outflow seen ever. NASA has announced more delays in sending astronauts back to the moon more than 50 years after the Apollo missions. or signup to continue reading Administrator Bill Nelson on Thursday said the next mission in the Artemis program - sending four astronauts around the moon and back - is now targeted for April 2026. It had been on the books for September 2025, after slipping from this year. The investigation into heat shield damage from the capsule's initial test flight two years ago took time, officials said, and other spacecraft improvements are still needed. This bumps the third Artemis mission - a moon landing by two other astronauts - to at least 2027. NASA had been aiming for 2026. NASA's Artemis program, a follow-up to the Apollo moonshots of the late 1960s and early 1970s, has completed only one mission. An empty Orion capsule circled the moon in 2022 after blasting off on NASA's new Space Launch System rocket. Although the launch and lunar laps went well, the capsule returned with an excessively charred and eroded bottom heat shield, damaged from the heat of re-entry. It took until recently for engineers to pinpoint the cause and come up with a plan. NASA will use the Orion capsule with its original heat shield for the next flight with four astronauts, according to Nelson, but make changes to the reentry path at flight's end. To rip off and replace the heat shield would have meant at least a full year's delay, officials said. During the flight test, the capsule dipped in and out of the atmosphere during re-entry and heat built up in the shield's outer layer, explained Pam Melroy, NASA deputy administrator. That resulted in cracking and uneven shedding of the outer layer. The commander of the lunar fly-around, astronaut Reid Wiseman, took part in Thursday's news conference at NASA headquarters in Washington. Campco has urged a reassessment of the decision. In an appeal, Campco demanded the central govt facilitate studies and submit reports through reputed institutions such as the Indian Council of Medical Research ( ICMR ), the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), the Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI), and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc). Though arecanut was recognised for its Ayurvedic benefits, WHO categorised it as a cancer-causing substance. Campco considers it a unilateral decision, stated Campco president A Kishore Kumar Kodgi. He pointed out that arecanut holds a sacred place in Indian culture, and was historically acknowledged for its medicinal properties, such as easing respiratory and digestive issues. The WHO report has created significant distress among arecanut growers. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), which is a part of WHO, failed to disclose complete research data in its findings, raising suspicions about potential bias or manipulation of the report, Kodgi stated. Campco cited its own research, along with findings from various institutions, affirming that arecanut is not carcinogenic. Instead, arecanut possesses therapeutic qualities, he said.

HMRC is urging people who have just turned eighteen to check if they can claim around £2,212 in free cash. The department has issued a reminder for people to check if they could have a Child Trust Fund (CTF) lying around. CTFs are special tax-free savings accounts given to children by the government. In a recent post on social platform X, HMRC wrote : “Unlock a boost this Christmas by cashing in your #ChildTrustFund. “If you’ve turned 18 in the past few years, then you could be missing out on a cash boost.” Many children got around £250 each from the state at the time their CTF was started. read more on benefits Those from low-income families or in local authority care received an extra £250. These bank accounts, due to interest built up, are worth around £2,212 on average now . To have been given a CTF you must have been born between September 1, 2002 and January 2, 2011. Nearly 600,000 18 to 21-year-olds have an unclaimed CTF, worth an average of £2,212, according to the latest figures. Most read in Money CTFs are long-term, tax-free savings accounts and were set up for children born between September 1, 2002 and January 2, 2011. Eligible kids also had the opportunity to set up a child trust fund themselves. HMRC sent the parents or guardians of qualifying children a starting payment voucher of £250 (or £500 if you were on a low income). If you didn't set one up for your child within a year, HMRC would do it automatically. Anyone can add to the account thereafter, and you can put up to £9,000 a year into it. The year starts on the child’s birthday and ends the day before their next birthday. Your child will have full control over the account once they turn 18. This way you'll need to share the bank account details you wish to transfer the cash into with HMRC, and you won't be able to do this until you're 18. But if you'd rather invest it, you can transfer it into an ISA (Individual Savings Account). The interest rates on a cash ISA are typically lower than a standard savings account, but a Lifetime ISA may be better if you're saving for your first home . If you go for a Lifetime ISA, you'll be able to add £4,000 a year to the account and the government will grant you a 25% bonus as long as you put it towards buying a first home. Since 2020, when viral videos of smash-and-grab robberies flooded social media during the COVID-19 pandemic, many Americans have expressed fears that crime is out of control. Polls show that perceptions have improved recently, but a majority of Americans still say crime is worse than in previous years. “There is this sense of brazenness that people have — they can just walk in and steal stuff. ... That hurts the consumer, and it hurts the company,” said Alex Piquero, a criminology professor at the University of Miami and former director of the federal Bureau of Justice Statistics, in an interview. “That’s just the world we live in,” he said. “We need to get people to realize that you have to obey the law.” At least eight states — Arizona, California, Florida, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, New York and Vermont — passed a total of 14 bills in 2024 aimed at tackling retail theft, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. The measures range from redefining retail crimes and adjusting penalties to allowing cross-county aggregation of theft charges and protecting retail workers. Major retailers have responded to rising theft since 2020 by locking up merchandise, upgrading security cameras, hiring private security firms and even closing stores. Still, the report indicates that shoplifting remains a stubborn problem. In Chicago, the rate of reported shoplifting incidents remained below pre-pandemic levels throughout 2023 — but surged by 46% from January to October 2024 compared with the same period a year ago. Los Angeles adopted a new crime reporting system in March 2024, which has likely led to an undercount, according to the report. The National Retail Federation’s latest report attributed 36% of the $112.1 billion in lost merchandise in 2022 to “external theft,” which includes organized retail crime. Organized retail crime typically involves coordinated efforts by groups to steal items with the intent to resell them for a profit. Commonly targeted goods include high-demand items such as baby formula, laundry detergent and electronics. The same report found that retailers’ fear of violence associated with theft also is on the rise, with more retailers taking a “hands-off approach.” More than 41% of respondents to the organization’s 2023 survey, up from 38% in 2022, reported that no employee is authorized to try and stop a shoplifter. (The federation’s reporting has come under criticism. It retracted a claim last year that attributed nearly half of lost merchandise in 2021 to organized retail crime; such theft accounted for only about 5%. The group announced this fall it will no longer publish its reports on lost merchandise.) Policy experts say shoplifting and organized retail theft can significantly harm critical industries, drive up costs for consumers and reduce sales tax revenue for states. Those worries have driven recent state-level action to boost penalties for shoplifting. California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a package of 10 bills into law in August aimed at addressing retail theft. These measures make repeated theft convictions a felony, allow aggregation of crimes across multiple counties to be charged as a single felony, and permit police to arrest suspects for retail theft even if the crime wasn’t witnessed directly by an officer. In September, Newsom signed an additional bill that imposes steeper felony penalties for large-scale theft offenses. California voters also overwhelmingly approved a ballot measure in November that increases penalties for specific drug-related and theft crimes. Under the new law, people who are convicted of theft at least twice may face felony charges on their third offense, regardless of the stolen item’s value. “With these changes in the law, really it comes down to making sure that law enforcement is showing up to our stores in a timely manner, and that the prosecutors and the [district attorneys] are prosecuting,” Rachel Michelin, the president and CEO of the California Retailers Association, told Stateline. “That’s the only way we’re going to deter retail theft in our communities.” In New Jersey, a bipartisan bill making its way through the legislature would increase penalties for leading a shoplifting ring and allow extended sentences for repeat offenders. “This bill is going after a formally organized band of criminals that deliver such destruction to a critical business in our community. We have to act. We have to create a deterrence,” Democratic Assemblymember Joseph Danielsen, one of the bill’s prime sponsors, said in an interview with Stateline. The legislation would allow extended sentences for people convicted of shoplifting three times within 10 years or within 10 years of their release from prison, and would increase penalties to 10 to 20 years in prison for leading a retail crime ring. The bill also would allow law enforcement to aggregate the value of stolen goods over the course of a year to charge serial shoplifters with more serious offenses. Additionally, the bill would increase penalties for assaults committed against retail workers, and would require retailers to train employees on detecting gift card scams. Maryland legislators considered a similar bill during this year’s legislative session that would have defined organized retail theft and made it a felony. The bill didn’t make it out of committee, but Cailey Locklair, president of the Maryland Retailers Alliance, said the group plans to propose a bill during next year’s legislative session that would target gift card fraud. Better, more thorough reporting from retailers is essential to truly understanding shoplifting trends and its full impact, in part because some retail-related crimes, such as gift card fraud, are frequently underreported, according to Lopez, of the Council on Criminal Justice. Measuring crime across jurisdictions is notoriously difficult , and the council does not track organized retail theft specifically because law enforcement typically doesn’t identify it as such at the time of arrest — if an arrest even occurs — requiring further investigation, Lopez said. The council’s latest report found conflicting trends in the FBI’s national crime reporting systems. The FBI’s older system, the Summary Reporting System, known as SRS, suggests that reported shoplifting hadn’t gone up through 2023, remaining on par with 2019 levels. In contrast, the FBI’s National Incident-Based Reporting System, or NIBRS, shows a 93% increase in shoplifting over the same period. The discrepancy may stem from the type of law enforcement agencies that have adopted the latter system, Lopez said. Some of those communities may have higher levels of shoplifting or other types of property crime, which could be what is driving the spike, Lopez said. Despite the discrepancies and varying levels of shoplifting across the country, Lopez said, it’s important for retailers to report these incidents, as doing so could help allocate law enforcement resources more effectively. “All law enforcement agencies have limited resources, and having the most accurate information allows for not just better policy, but also better implementation — better use of strategic resources,” Lopez said. According to CoreLogic, the volume of auctions was down on the 2,881 auctions held the previous week and well below the spring peak of 3,135 auctions held over the week ending October 27. Meanwhile, the preliminary combined capitals auction clearance rate was just 62.4 per cent, the lowest preliminary result so far this year. Sydney's preliminary clearance rate was 58.2 per cent, the lowest of the year so far and down nearly 8 percentage points from 65.1 per cent the week prior, which revised down to 58.2 per cent once finalised. This time last year the auction clearance rate in Sydney was 57 per cent. Melbourne's preliminary clearance rate was 67 per cent, up slightly from last week's preliminary clearance rate of 64.1 per cent, which revised down to 61.7 per cent once finalised. CoreLogic research director Tim Lawless said the combined capital auction clearance rate of just 62.4 per cent, a full percentage point lower than the week prior and the lowest this year reflected an increase in properties on the market. "The weak outcome for auction markets reflects weaker selling conditions as advertised stock levels rise without a commensurate lift in purchasing activity," he said. Mr Lawless said he expected auction volumes to fall further next week as Christmas fast approaches. "Next week is set to show a further reduction, with around 2,200 homes currently scheduled for auction, reducing to around 800 the week after," he said. Geoffrey Hinton says he doesn’t regret the work he did that laid the foundations of artificial intelligence, but wishes he thought of safety sooner. The British-Canadian computer scientist often called the godfather of AI said over the weekend that he doesn’t have any guilty regret, which he said is when someone has done something when they know they shouldn’t have at the time. “In the same circumstances, I would do the same again,” he said of his research, which dates back to the 1980s and has formed the underpinnings of AI. “However, I think it might have been unfortunate in that we’re going to get superintelligence faster than I thought, and I wish I’d thought about safety earlier.” Superintelligence surpasses the abilities of even the smartest humans. Hinton thinks it could arrive in the next five to 20 years and humanity may have to “worry seriously about how we stay in control.” Hinton made his prediction during a press conference in Stockholm, where he is due to a receive the Nobel Prize in physics on Tuesday. Hinton, a University of Toronto professor emeritus, and co-laureate John Hopfield, a Princeton University professor, are being given the prize because they developed some of the foundations of machine learning, a computer science that helps AI mimic how humans learn. Hinton kicked off his Nobel week on Saturday with the press conference, where he appeared with laureates in chemistry and economics and was asked about AI safety and regulation. Hinton left a job at Google last year to speak more freely about the technology’s dangers, which he has said could include job losses, bias and discrimination, echo chambers, fake news, battle robots and even the end of humanity. On Saturday, he said he considers lethal autonomous weapons to be a short-term danger. “There isn’t going to be any regulation there,” he said, pointing out that European regulations have a specific clause exempting military use of AI from restrictions. “Governments are unwilling to regulate themselves, when it comes to lethal autonomous weapon, and there is an arms race going on between all the major arms suppliers like the United States, China, Russia, Britain, Israel and possibly even Sweden, though I don’t know.” A day later, Hinton put his concerns about AI aside to deliver a lecture with Hopfield explaining the research that earned them their Nobel. “Today I am going to do something very foolish.” Hinton said in introducing his portion of the pair’s hour-long speech. “I am going to try and describe a complicated technical idea for a general audience without using any equations.” The audience chuckled. The talk began with Hopfield describing a network he invented that could store and reconstruct images in data. It led Hinton to later create the Boltzmann machine, which learns from examples, rather than instructions, and when trained, can recognize familiar characteristics in information, even if it has not seen that data before. Hinton said students in his lab and others run by fellow AI pioneers Yoshua Bengio and Yann LeCun were using Boltzmann machines to pre-train neural networks — machine learning models that make decisions in a manner similar to the human brain — between 2006 and 2011. By 2009, two of Hinton’s students had showed the technique “worked a little bit better than the best existing techniques for recognizing fragments of phonemes in speech and that then changed the speech recognition community,” Hinton said. Phonemes are small units of sound that can change the meaning of a word. Google later began working on technology based on Hinton’s discoveries and “suddenly the speech recognition on the Android got a lot better.” Even though the kind of Boltzmann machines Hinton was working with back then are no longer used in the same ways as he used them, he said “they allowed us to make the transition from thinking that deep neural networks would never work to seeing that deep neural networks actually could be made to work.” Nobel Week will continue Monday with a discussion about the future of health before an awards ceremony and banquet is held Tuesday. Hinton has said he will donate a portion of the prize money — equivalent to about C$1.45 million — he and Hopfield will be given to Water First, which is working to boost Indigenous access to water, and a charity supporting neurodiverse young adults. He is also reportedly due to donate an early Boltzmann chip to the Nobel Prize Museum. The Nobel is not the only prize Hinton scooped up this month. On Friday, he, Bengio, LeCun, Chinese-American computer scientist Fei-Fei Li and Nvidia founder Jensen Huang, were awarded the Vin Future Prize, a US$3 million prize for science breakthroughs in a ceremony in Vietnam.
