Colvin and Heide were making their first starts of the season for Purdue (5-1). Braden Smith, who was averaging 14.6 points, was scoreless on an 0-for-4 shooting day. Smith had a team-high nine assists. Nate Martin led Marshall (3-2) with nine points, playing 24 minutes before fouling out with several minutes left in the game. The Boilermakers shot 55% in the first half to take a 39-24 halftime lead. However, Purdue made only one field goal in the final nine minutes of the first half. Purdue picked up the intensity in the second half, leading by as many as 41 points. The Boilermakers shot 50% for the game and held the Thundering Herd to 30%. Fortinet, Inc. (FTNT) Sees Price Target Boost Amid AI-Driven Cybersecurity InnovationsHome | NW government HOD sentenced to 2-years in SA Express matter The former Head of Department at the North West Department of Community Safety and Transport Management Bailey Mahlakoleng has been sentenced to two years imprisonment or R200 000 fine. This is after he pleaded guilty before the North West High court today, for contravening the Public Finance Management Act relating to the SA Express matter. His sentencing emanates from an investigation by the Hawks into allegations of flouting procurement processes when the North West Department of Community Safety and Transport Management entered into a contract with SA Express in 2015 to provide airline services for the province. HAWKS North West Spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Tinyiko Mathebula elaborates. “Upon entering into a five-year contract with the department, SA Express appointed three different management companies for ground handling services. In terms of the agreement, the department had to pay an amount of approximately R409 million to SA Express and management companies over a five-year period. The contract ended after three years. The department had suffered a loss of R186 million. Over R83 million was paid to the three management companies. It was discovered during the investigation that no ground handling services were rendered by the appointed companies.” Mahlakoleng reportedly confessed that he was only following political instructions. “The main reasons for accepting the plea offer were that he did not receive any of the stolen funds and he is a first offender and acted under pressure when he yielded to the instruction from his political bosses not to follow correct procurement procedures when SA Express was appointed,” adds Mathebula. Huge rock band signs for longer Las Vegas Strip casino residencyHEBBRONVILLE, Texas, EE.UU. Karin Ryan worked alongside Carter for over 30 years. She was most touched by his faith in the goodness of others and his unwavering commitment to peace. He has high expectations and has always been more demanding of those closest to him. Editor's note: Business Insider originally published this essay in September 2023. In my more than 30 years of working with former US President Jimmy Carter, I've been most touched by his deep faith in people — his belief that, given the chance, everyone has the capacity for good. He's always been confident that even the most vulnerable and persecuted can rise above any challenge if they have adequate resources and support, and he built The Carter Center to help fill this need. He's approached the powerful — be they warlords or heads of state — with a presumption that an appeal to reason, communicated with respect, might bear fruit. I've sometimes heard him called naïve. This is wrong: His beliefs and actions have always been well informed. It's with eyes wide open that he chooses optimism, possibility, and faith over cynicism and arrogance. It's been a constant inspiration to me. I wanted to be part of something life-changing I was drawn to The Carter Center after moving to Atlanta in 1987. During a visit to the Center's museum, I was captivated by exhibits showcasing the Camp David peace talks and the success of Carter's Panama Canal Treaty. Encountering the determination of this American president who was so deeply devoted to peace was a life-changing experience, and I wanted to be a part of it. So when an entry-level position in the newly established Human Rights Program opened up at the Center, I jumped at the chance to apply. I organized meetings, took phone messages (this was before voicemail!), and eventually got to help research cases of political prisoners and draft letters for Carter on their behalf. Carter liked to work through memos instead of frequent meetings so we had to present our ideas in brief paragraphs and learn to draft letters that he might have written as president — short and to the point. I cannot count how many drafts came back from him with notes in the margin saying things like "too verbose," or "I'm not Amnesty International!" He didn't want strident activist language in his letters; moral persuasion from a former President required something different. He appreciated my focus on human rights activists as key agents of democratic movements and began to ask me for input during his various forays into diplomacy. Once, he asked me to join the team that would observe the first democratic elections in Haiti in 1990 so that I could find leading dissident voices and journalists with whom he could meet. The discussions he had on that trip were deep and intense, a departure from the usual predictable official meetings. At the conclusion of our stay in Haiti, Carter turned to me before stepping into his ride to the airport, saying "You did a good job here." I was thrilled. Belief in the inherent goodness of others That experience became a model for our future work together: The Carter Center has continued to bring together frontline activists for those tough but transformative conversations — the hard work of advancing human rights and democracy in all corners of the world. Related stories Carter's belief in the inherent goodness of people has never faded, despite the grave disappointments and turmoil of recent years — the Iraq invasion, America's abuses in the "war on terror," and the global erosion of democracy and human rights. If anything, his faith in humanity — the root of his commitment to human rights — has seemed to grow stronger as he's aged. During decades at The Carter Center, he's written countless letters on behalf of victims of abuse, especially human rights activists persecuted for their brave work. A letter he wrote to the king of Nepal resulted in hundreds of people being released from prison. President Carter once dropped into my office asking why I hadn't sent him any cases recently. He wanted to use his voice and his name to help people in trouble. He often kept his personal interventions on behalf of political prisoners private, because he believed that would make them more effective. And while he was prepared to criticize foreign governments, he has been sometimes even more critical of human rights abuses in his own country. He and his wife, Rosalynn — who was often intimately involved in his peacemaking and human rights efforts — wrote many letters on behalf of Americans facing execution, rarely successfully. He has also made public appeals to governors to abolish the death penalty in their states, sometimes successfully . He issued scathing condemnations of the 2003 invasion of Iraq , and of human rights violations by the US government . His tireless efforts to end or avoid war sometimes meant that he would not speak publicly about human rights abuses committed by warring parties, seeking instead an end to the violence first. In the wake of his peacemaking efforts in North Korea , Bosnia , and Haiti in 1994, we organized a closed-door discussion with U.S.-based human rights leaders critical of his engagements with human rights violators. During the contentious discussion, the Carters made their case for avoiding public condemnations that could derail efforts to bring leaders like Kim Il Sung, Radovan Karadzic, and Raoul Cédras to the peace table. Ultimately, he agreed that the peace process should never preclude holding human rights violators accountable. He went on to become a vocal supporter of U.N. negotiations to establish an independent International Criminal Court, publicly opposing a U.S. proposal to give the United Nations Security Council a veto over the actions of the independent chief prosecutor. Soul of an activist, mind of a pragmatist Jimmy Carter has the soul of an activist and the mind of a pragmatist. Every situation has required a balancing of objectives, though his calculations were always informed by his ideas about the value of human freedom. It was a remarkable thing to witness. He could be so positive and encouraging one moment, and stern and insistent the next. In 2009, the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Israeli Knesset peppered Carter with questions, suggesting he supported Hamas because he met with their leaders. He gently but firmly pushed back, reminding committee members that Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon had personally approved of Hamas candidates running in the 2006 elections. His focus was simple: peace and human rights for all, which requires speaking with all parties. As a Cold War president, Carter walked a tightrope of managing relationships with world leaders while speaking out against human rights abuses. Within the Soviet Union, he navigated a nuclear-arms reduction while standing with dissidents, sending a hand-written letter of support to embattled physicist Andrei Sakharov. He threatened Latin American US Cold War allies like Argentina with an end to military assistance if they persisted with human rights abuses — a move that bolstered democratic movements across the region. In China, he pressured the government to allow a measure of religious freedom , student exchanges and political prisoner releases. And while he has succeeded in forging a lasting peace between Israel and Egypt, he has also dedicated himself and The Carter Center to the pursuit of equal human rights for the Palestinian people, which he calls the unfinished business of the Camp David Accords. When quiet diplomacy failed to achieve this aim, he became increasingly critical of both Israeli violations of human rights and the failure of the U.S. to exert its influence to stop them. Jimmy Carter is a mentor that's most demanding of those closest to him His greatest hope for his own country is that the people of the United States will realize that our great blessings could allow us to be a generous, justice-oriented, and peace-loving nation. I have never had the feeling that this was just wishful thinking. It is a matter of faith. Many of us who know him and have worked by his side are deeply inspired by this conviction and his refusal to stop trying. He's always encouraged us to be bold and to maintain high expectations for ourselves and others. In fact, he could be more demanding of those closest to him — whether it was his staff or his successors in the White House — than those over whom he had less influence. Like a firm but loving father, he pushed those he believed had the greatest potential for influence. He was also the best leader and mentor one could have. Alrena Dale, 61, got $155,000 in student loans discharged through bankruptcy. Biden's new bankruptcy guidance, aimed at easing the process for borrowers, made that possible. Some attorneys told BI that the new guidance is a big help, but more outreach would be helpful. Alrena Dale, 61, had her six-figure student-loan balance wiped out after decades of payments. She's one of hundreds of borrowers who have received relief after new changes to the bankruptcy process . Advertisement Though Dale filed over five years ago, President Joe Biden's new bankruptcy guidance, which streamlined the information she needed to provide in order to qualify for relief, was a turning point in her case. In August 2023, Dale was finally relieved of her $155,000 balance, according to documents reviewed by Business Insider. Advertisement "There were no words. I was excited. I cried," Dale, who'd attended an online business bachelor's and master's program but struggled to find employment in her field, told BI. She worked multiple minimum-wage jobs at a time to afford her student-loan payments alongside her monthly expenses. "I really honestly didn't believe it until I got my discharge papers." The reason it was so difficult for Dale and many other student-loan borrowers to seek relief in bankruptcy court before 2022 is that borrowers had to prove an "undue hardship" standard, in which they had to show that they cannot maintain a minimal standard of living, that their circumstances aren't likely to improve, and that they have made a good-faith effort to repay their debt. That standard was an extremely high bar for borrowers to meet . The Biden administration's guidance changed that by establishing clearer guidelines for borrowers to meet undue hardship, and it allowed borrowers to complete a self-attestation form, allowing the bankruptcy process to move quicker and avoid investigations into their backgrounds. Advertisement Some bankruptcy attorneys told BI that the new guidance has made student-loan bankruptcy much more achievable for borrowers, with some having seen quick success after decades of stagnancy. Still, they said many lawyers are reluctant to lean into the new process, and more outreach and education on navigating bankruptcy for student loans would help. Dale said the overwhelming emotion she now feels is relief. "Knowing that I don't have to go out and work a second job just to pay it back because they've removed it for me, I really can't thank them enough," Dale said. "I have no words because I'm just happy and grateful and thankful." Advertisement 'It's given us so much hope' Bob and Tammy Branson, a bankruptcy attorney and senior paralegal, respectively, successfully represented Dale in her bankruptcy proceedings. Related stories Tammy said that over the past 25 years, it was nearly impossible to discharge their clients' student loans in bankruptcy — but after the new guidance, she said their law firm has successfully discharged over $1 million in student loans. "Now we're actually getting people not just to the point of treading water, but we're getting them out of the water," Bob said. Advertisement Dustin Baker, a bankruptcy attorney in Iowa, has seen similar success with the new guidance. Baker told BI that before November 2022, he advised his clients that considering a student-loan discharge wasn't worth their effort because it was so difficult to achieve, and he didn't want to take his clients' money for litigation he wasn't confident would be successful. But once the guidance was announced, Baker said he's eliminated student debt for about a dozen of his clients, with a few more in the pipeline. He said his "biggest excitement" with the new process is the self-attestation form, which directly tells borrowers the questions they need to answer to get approved for a discharge, making communication between the borrower and the government easier. The Justice Department released new data in July on how the process was going since the new guidance was announced. It showed that 588 new cases were filed from October 2023 to March 2024 — a 34% increase from the prior 6-month period. New data BI obtained from Sen. Elizabeth Warren in October showed that nearly 900 borrowers sought out the process in fiscal year 2024, and 85% of borrowers who filed using the new guidance received a full or partial discharge. Advertisement Baker said his experience incorporating the new guidance into his work was "very easy," and he added that members of the Justice Department gave attorneys in his area training sessions. However, Tammy and Bob said more education and outreach would be helpful because some lawyers are unsure if the new process is worth it. Still, it's clear the guidance works, and Tammy said she hopes that continues. "It's given us so much hope," she said. Advertisement 'I would've had to work another job' The new bankruptcy process for student-loan borrowers still isn't perfect. Igor Roitburg, a former attorney and senior managing director at Stretto — a bankruptcy services and technology firm — told BI that the timeline for borrowers to receive a bankruptcy decision can still widely vary and that uncertainty is a roadblock for some borrowers and attorneys to participate. "For them to invest time and effort into a new process that they're uncertain about if they don't see results for months and months and months, makes it hard for them to commit to the process and offer it as a global service to all their clients," Roitburg said. Dale said she saw no other option but to file for bankruptcy, regardless of whether it would be successful. Once the new guidance was released, the self-attestation form allowed Dale to prove that her financial circumstances were unlikely to improve, qualifying her for relief. Advertisement She now works at a call center and said she can't afford to retire yet. If she had the opportunity to do things differently, she might have considered going to a trade school to avoid the student-debt burden. "I'm just making the best of what I have to work with right now," she said, adding that if she didn't see success through bankruptcy, "I would've had to work another job just to pay the student loans." In the critical year of achieving the objectives and tasks laid down in the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025), after the successful convening of the Third Plenary Session of the 20th CPC Central Committee, how this important conference will plan for China's economy has attracted worldwide attention. I would like to share a few ideas with Iranian friends from all walks of life in this regard: The Conference analyzed the current economic situation. In the face of a complicated and challenging environment of increasing external pressure and growing internal difficulties, the Chinese government has united and led the Chinese people of all ethnic groups to respond calmly and implement comprehensive measures. Notably, the decisive deployment of a package of incremental policies at the meeting held by the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee on Sept. 26 has effectively boosted social confidence and led to a remarkable economic recovery. In November, China’s economy has sustained the recovery momentum since September. Imports and exports of goods maintained growth and trade structure continued to optimize. In the first eleven months, the total value of imports and exports of goods was 39,786.1 billion yuan, up by 4.9 percent year on year. Equipment manufacturing and high-tech manufacturing grew fast, with the value added increased by 7.6 percent and 7.8 percent year on year respectively, both are more than 2 percentage points faster than that of the industrial enterprises above the designated size. Modern services developed well. the Index of Services Production of information transmission, software and information technology services, leasing and business services and financial intermediation grew by 9.3 percent, 9.3 percent and 8.8 percent year on year respectively, 3.2 percentage points, 3.2 percentage points and 2.7 percentage points faster than the Index of Services Production. As things stand, China's economic growth is expected to be around 5%, and major annual goals and tasks of economic and social development to be successfully accomplished. The Conference released a strong signal to promote the continued improvement of China's economy. The meeting arranged the economic work for 2025, emphasizing that more active and effective macroeconomic policies should be implemented next year. The country will adopt a more proactive fiscal policy, set a higher deficit-to-GDP ratio, increase the issuance of ultra-long special treasury bonds, and increase the issuance of local government special-purpose bonds. The tone of monetary policy was adjusted from "prudent" to "moderately loose", which is the first time in 14 years. The conference also outlined 9 key tasks, including expand high-standard opening up, give full play to the driving role of economic system reform, drive the development of new quality productive forces through scientific and technological innovation, and pursue coordinated progress in new urbanization and all-around rural revitalization. Although the adverse impacts brought about by changes in the external environment have deepened, and the country's economy still faces many difficulties and challenges, the Chinese government will face up to the difficulties, strengthen confidence, increase counter-cyclical adjustments, further enrich and improve the policy toolbox, and provide strong policy support for promoting the continued improvement of the economy. The Conference made it clear that China will expand high-standard opening up. At present, the headwinds of economic globalization intensified, geopolitical risks continued to rise, and global governance challenges increased. Under such circumstances, China insists on expanding its independent and unilateral opening up in an orderly manner, consolidating and expanding global trade and investment partnerships, and sharing development opportunities with the world. China will steadily expand systematic opening up, proactively docking the Comprehensive and Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement, the Digital Economy Partnership Agreement and other international high-standard economic and trade rules, accelerating the expansion of the network of globally oriented high-standard free trade zones, and promoting the negotiation and signing of a variety of multi-bilateral economic and trade agreements. China will enhance the resilience of foreign trade, promote cross-border e-commerce, push forward the layout and construction of overseas warehouses, actively develop services trade, green trade and digital trade, push forward the innovative development of border trade. China will increase the efforts to attract and stabilize investment, expand the pilot programs of expanding opening-up in the fields of telecommunication and medical, steadily expand opening-up of Internet, education, culture and other services, and further optimize the visa-free entry policy to attract and facilitate cross-border exchanges of business personnel. With world’s most promising mega market, a complete industrial system, a high level opening-up and the increasing effectiveness of innovation and development, China has a strong attraction to the world. At the 7th China International Import Expo (CIIE) held in November this year, Iran participated in the event with nearly 30 exhibitors and an exhibition area of 1,440 square meters, which is among top of all participating Asian countries. In 2025, China's economy braves the wind and the waves and sails steadily into the future, which will provide more development opportunities for all countries in the world, including Iran.Geofoam Market Forecast Industry Market Size and Growth Forecast 2024 - 2031Legal Briefs | Telangana HC slams Centre decision to reject Ganesh remission
The Department of Consumer Affairs is set to launch three new apps in a bid to enhance consumer protection against deceptive online practices known as "dark patterns". These apps — 'Jago Grahak Jago App,' 'Jagriti App,' and 'Jagriti Dashboard' — will be launched on Dec. 24, coinciding with National Consumer Day, according to an official statement released on Sunday. Dark patterns refer to manipulative design strategies that trick consumers into making choices they might not otherwise make, such as hidden charges or misleading subscription traps. In 2023, the Central Consumer Protection Authority issued guidelines outlining 13 specific dark patterns, including practices like false urgency, basket sneaking, confirm shaming, forced action, subscription traps, interface interference, bait and switch, drip pricing, disguised advertisements, trick wording, SaaS billing and rogue malwares, which undermine transparency and consumer rights. Previously, the CCPA has taken action against major companies like IndiGo airlines and BookMyShow for employing such tactics. For instance, BookMyShow was criticised for automatically adding a donation charge without consumer consent, a practice categorised as 'basket sneaking'. Following CCPA intervention, the platform now offers consumers the option to opt-in for such contributions. Similarly, IndiGo faced scrutiny for using "confirm shaming" tactics in its app, which pressured users into confirming purchases. After CCPA's intervention, IndiGo revised its wording to "No, I will not add to the trip" , to be more neutral, enhancing clarity for consumers. The wordings used earlier were “ No I will take risk” , which amounted to ‘confirm shaming’ which is a dark pattern. In another issue, the airline was directed to address the issue with the "skip" button on the "selection of seat" page and redesign their web check-in page. Accordingly, the airline addressed the issue of 'preferential seating’ by modification of their website and app by providing a disclaimer on the left side of "skip button", where it is written that "You can skip preferred seat selection and complete your booking. IndiGo will auto-assign a seat prior to your travel”. The new apps are designed to strengthen the CCPA's ability to fight these unfair practices in the digital marketplace, according to the statement. These apps will serve multiple functions; the 'Jago Grahak Jago App' will alert users about potentially unsafe URLs during their online activities, while the 'Jagriti App' will allow consumers to report suspected dark patterns directly. The 'Jagriti Dashboard' will enable the CCPA to generate real-time reports on e-commerce sites, facilitating quicker identification and resolution of consumer complaints. These initiatives stem from extensive research conducted by students at IIT(BHU) and are powered by advanced AI technology. They aim to create a more transparent digital marketplace, improve consumer awareness of their rights, and encourage ethical design practices among companies.
