Games to snuggle up with this holiday seasonIn a significant diplomatic development, India and Kuwait have elevated their bilateral relationship, marking it as a strategic partnership. This new alignment was solidified by key agreements, notably a memorandum on defence cooperation. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged in extensive discussions with Kuwaiti leaders, including Emir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah and other top officials. The talks, held as part of Modi's first trip to Kuwait in over four decades, focused on trade, investment, and cultural exchange, with four major agreements signed. These agreements include areas like sports, culture, and solar energy, alongside the crucial defense pact to bolster cooperation in defense industries and collaboration on research and development. The strategic partnership aims to enhance India-Kuwait relations across varied domains such as technology, security, and infrastructure. The move is expected to create new opportunities, fostering deeper economic and cultural linkages between the two nations, as India strengthens its ties with the Gulf Cooperation Council through Kuwait's presidency. ‘Direction of India-China relationship encouraging’Top bosses from the renewable energy sector are pushing for a greener future, urging housebuilders to fit solar panels on every new home. The call to action has been directed at Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner and Energy Secretary Ed Miliband , with hopes they will support the so-called Sunshine Bill set for discussion in the Commons early next year. The bill, championed by Liberal Democrat MP Max Wilkinson and scheduled for debate on January 17, aims to legally require new homes to be equipped with solar panels. Wilkinson has described the initiative as "just really, really obvious", highlighting its potential to cut carbon emissions and reduce living costs. “Taking this one simple step would pay back to new homeowners, via lower energy bills, in just a few short years, helping protect homeowners from high and fluctuating energy bills,” according to the letter. It continued: “Pressure on the wider grid would be reduced and the likely outcome would be a reduction in the country’s emissions too, in line with climate change targets.” The letter, signed by figures including Ecotricity CEO Asif Rehmanwala and E. On Next's director of residential newbuild Matthew Hart, points out: "The twin crises of high energy bills and climate change present this country with many challenges, but there are also a number of solutions that could be relatively easily implemented." They believe that incorporating solar energy into new residential buildings is one such solution. Mr Wilkinson remarked: "Following the shortest day of the year (Saturday), it’s time the Government finally commits to a sunnier future." He shared with the PA news agency: "One of the things that I think is just really, really obvious is that when we’re building new homes, they should be built to high standards of energy efficiency and that they should include renewable energy generation because that’s good for the planet, but also, it’s really, really good for people’s bills." "We all know that we’ve had the energy bills crisis over the last few years and fuel bills for households remain stubbornly high, so it seems obvious that we should put solar panels on the roofs of houses, so those bills are going to be lower." The Cheltenham MP described the cost of adding solar panels as "marginal" compared to the overall cost of constructing a home, stating it "pays back to the new homeowner within five or six years anyway, so it really is a win-win". In response to questions about the potential of the Sunshine Bill – formally known as the New Homes (Solar Generation) Bill – to combat climate change, Mr Wilkinson said: "There are the big international impacts that you’re talking about on climate change, but that doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t make those marginal gains locally where we can, particularly when they can have a really profound positive impact on people’s day-to-day lives." He expressed his Christmas wish, saying: "All I want this Christmas is for the Government to support the Sunshine Bill. Lower energy bills would be the perfect gift not just for me, but for the nation." In an October press release, a Government spokesperson stated that they "want solar panels on as many new homes as possible, because they are a vital technology to help cut bills for families, boost our national energy security, and help deliver net zero". However, the press release also confirmed that a final decision on the typical number of solar panels to be included in new homes is "yet to be made", emphasising that it is "a fundamental principle of building regulations that we do not constrain innovation by prescribing any specific technology". Mr Miliband has previously shown support for Mr Wilkinson’s proposal, stating in the Commons last Tuesday when asked about plans for "new homes to come with solar panels on the roof as standard": "I am very, very sympathetic to this, and we are in discussions with our colleagues across Government and watch this space." Elon Musk has hit back at the Sydney Morning Herald after the masthead wildly predicted the billionaire would quit Tesla in 2025. SMH published an opinion piece by technology editor David Swan on Sunday evening which shared a series of predictions for tech in the new year. One of the predictions centred on Musk and whether his busy list of commitments would force him to part ways with Tesla as he focuses on a new role in 2025 as the joint lead of the Department of Government Efficiency in the Trump administration. "To be juggling leadership roles at X, Tesla, SpaceX, xAI, the Boring Company and Neuralink was already unsustainable," the SMH op-ed read. "Musk has already found himself at loggerheads with MAGA diehards like Steve Bannon over immigration issues, and the inauguration is still weeks away. He’s also been at loggerheads with the justice system, after a US judge blocked Musk’s $US56 billion ($90 billion) pay package from Tesla. "After constant controversies and distractions, it will all come to a head in 2025, and Musk will be forced to hand over the reins at Tesla, a company many mistakenly think he founded." The 53-year-old hit back with a tongue-in-cheek reply on X, after a Musk supporter shared the article's headline with a quote from the prediction. "I predict that the Sydney Morning Herald will continue to lose readership in 2025 for relentlessly lying to their audience and boring them to death," he said. Social media influencer and journalist at The Post Millennial Andy Ngo, also chimed in on the thread, saying the SMH had previously published lies about him after it claimed he had been banned from X before being reinstated. "The Sydney Morning Herald published these lies. I was never banned on this platform, even under the worst times from the prior regime," he said. Musk's comments come after the SMH was forced to issue an apology for falsely identifying South Australian barrister Ian Roberts as one of the two men who died during the Sydney to Hobart yacht race on Friday. NSW Police confirmed two men, aged 55 and 65, had died but neither was publicly identified initially. Authorities confirmed the 65-year-old was aboard the Bowline and was a native of South Australia in a press conference on Friday morning. Hours later, the SMH published an article identifying the man as Mr Roberts, the skipper and owner of the Bowline. However, that article was taken down within an hour after it emerged the Adelaide-based barrister was in fact alive and well. The paper subsequently issued a public apology to the 65-year-old after the error was identified. "The Sydney Morning Herald incorrectly named Adelaide barrister Ian Roberts as one of the victims in the Sydney to Hobart yacht race," the SMH said in a statement. "This was incorrect. We apologise to Mr Roberts and his family." Nick Smith, 55, and Roy Quaden, 65, were later identified as the men to have died. The Sydney Morning Herald’s circulation has been steadily declining for several years, losing more than a million readers since 2022 across digital and print. In May, the paper bragged about having 7.3 million readers across all platforms, but that figure was down 1.1 million from its 2022 results.
