Prime Minister Narendra Modi today congratulated the Mahayuti alliance for the historic sweep of Maharashtra, and warned those who in the pursuit of "opportunistic politics" lose sight of their core values. At the BJP headquarters in Delhi where hundreds of supporters had arrived to celebrate the Maharashtra win, PM Modi referred to the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance as something that was stitched at the last minute for selfish reasons. "The people of Maharashtra have stopped the conspiracy hatched by the Congress and their friends. Maharashtra has given a verdict - ek hai toh safe hai is India's mantra," PM Modi said, alluding to the need for a stable and safe government with no vested interests pulling it in all directions. PM Modi said the Congress can no longer win elections on its own, and whenever it loses, the party drags others down as it sinks, referring to the numbers in Maharashtra. "The Congress is all about the family. No matter how much hard work a party worker puts in, the family will take all credit. There are many senior citizens who have seen the old Congress. They are searching for it today," PM Modi said. The Mahayuti or the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) won 236 of the 288 assembly seats, while the MVA comprising the Congress, Uddhav Thackeray's Shiv Sena and Sharad Pawar's Nationalist Congress Party managed to get only 48 seats. In Jharkhand, however, the NDA could not breach the INDIA fortress held by Chief Minister Hemant Soren's Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), the Congress, and the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD).Derek Hess, 28, of Penn Laird, attributes his success in finance to his experiences. Hess, named to the Daily News-Record’s 10 Under 40 list by the newspaper’s editorial board, said he has lived in the Shenandoah Valley since he was two years of age. He graduated from James Madison University in 2018 with a major in finance and a minor in economics. Hess then took his first job at PBMares, LLP in Fredericksburg in their Wealth Management division. However, his wife accepted a job in the Valley, so he transitioned to their Harrisonburg branch. Hess said he “always liked the Harrisonburg area.” He enjoys working in the city and appreciates the ability to be a short distance from nature. Hess then decided to work at Hess Financial in 2022 as a a Certified Financial PlannerTM (CFP®). According to Hess, his father started the company in 2011. Hess Financial’s fundamental values are centered on authenticity, relationships and education, according to Hess Financial’s website. Hess said he did not start his career in financial planning because of his father or because he intended to work with him. “I felt the field of financial planning was a good mix of using technical knowledge and working with people,” said Hess. “My father and I agreed that it was important for me to find my way as I started my career, and eventually, our professional paths crossed again organically.” Hess has enjoyed managing his own money and staying organized with it. However, he also wanted to make sure he could have a job interacting with and helping people, said Hess. According to Hess, these skills and attributes make him an excellent fit for financial planning. “It just seemed like it was the right blend of the technical skills and the people-facing career that I wanted,” said Hess. Hess said he enjoys teaching people, coaching them on managing money, and having a better relationship with money. Hess said that growing up in the area and being a part of the professional community today has made being named to the 10 Under 40 list incredibly special to him. “I’m doing the best that I can to show others in my network that even if we’re young and they’re still getting started, there’s a lot that we can do,” said Hess. Hess said that finding opportunities outside of work to contribute has helped him in his career. He encourages others to adopt those behaviors to succeed throughout their careers and become more well-rounded community members. Hess participates with the Young Professionals Association, an organization created by local young professionals in the Harrisonburg area. YPA’s mission is to “connect and engage young professionals by providing social networking, professional development, and volunteer opportunities,” according to YPA’s website. He is also involved at Big Brothers Big Sisters and Massanutten Regional Library. Hess said he has learned a lot from other professionals and mentors, which has helped him grow professionally. Hess, in return, hopes to inspire that same support to those in the community.

Prime Minister, Dr. the Most Hon. Andrew Holness, says that during the next iteration of the New Social Housing Programme (NSHP) the Government will be focused on providing more cost-effective units that are easier to build. He said that the units will be “robust enough to withstand our weather and environmental conditions.” Dr. Holness, who was addressing the ceremony for the handing over of a two-bedroom unit to Shirley and Calvin Swaby in Fullerton Park, St. Ann on Thursday (Dec. 12), outlined plans to shorten the construction time of the units by using pre-built solutions that can be placed on a foundation. “They’ll still be strong, robust, but the prefabricated housing solutions, the technology is now far advanced for us to be able to deploy a one-bedroom or a two-bedroom solution quite easily,” he noted. “So, they are constructed in a factory, they are put on a trailer, and they are brought to the location. A small crane puts them in place, assembles them, and within a matter of a week or two, you have a house ready to occupy. That is the direction in which we will probably have to go because the time it takes for construction, in addition to the administrative time, procurement time, and the compliance time, does elongate the process,” he pointed out. Meanwhile, Minister of State in the Ministry of Finance and the Public Service, Hon. Zavia Mayne, who is also Member of Parliament for St. Ann South West, informed that Mrs. Swaby and her husband Calvin had lived in an abandoned teacher’s cottage in Alexandria in the parish before being served notice. Mrs. Swaby, whose husband is visually impaired, expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister and Mr. Mayne for their part in providing them with safe shelter, noting that their lives have been transformed.BOGOTÁ, Colombia (AP) — One of Colombia’s legendary drug lords and a to the South American country, after serving 25 years of a 30-year prison sentence in the United States. A short while later, Fabio Ochoa was again a free man. Ochoa arrived in Bogota’s El Dorado airport on a deportation flight on Monday, wearing a grey sweatshirt and carrying his personal belongings in a plastic bag. After stepping out of the plane, the former cartel boss was met by immigration officials in bullet proof vests. There were no police on site to detain him. Colombia’s national immigration agency promptly posted a brief statement on the social media platform X, saying Ochoa was “freed so that he could join his family” after immigration officials took his fingerprints and confirmed through a database that he is not wanted by Colombian authorities. Ochoa, 67, and his older brothers amassed a fortune when cocaine started flooding the U.S. in the late 1970s and early 1980s, according to U.S. authorities, to the point that in 1987 they were included in the Forbes Magazine’s list of billionaires. Living in Miami, Ochoa ran a distribution center for the cocaine cartel once headed by . Escobar died in a shootout with authorities in Medellin in 1993. Ochoa was first indicted in the U.S. for his alleged role in for the Medellin cartel, but became an informant for the Drug Enforcement Administration. Along with his two older brothers, Juan David and Jorge Luis, Ochoa turned himself in to Colombian authorities in the early 1990s under a deal in which they avoided being extradited to the U.S. The three brothers were released from prison in 1996, but Ochoa was arrested again three years later for drug trafficking and was extradited to the U.S. in 2001 in response to an indictment in Miami naming him and more than 40 people as part of a drug smuggling conspiracy. He was the only suspect in that group who opted to go to trial, resulting in his conviction and a 30-year sentence. The other defendants got much lighter prison terms because most of them cooperated with the government. Ochoa’s name has faded from popular memory as Mexican drug traffickers take center stage in the global drug trade. But the former member of the Medellin cartel was recently depicted in the Netflix series Griselda, where he first fights the plucky businesswoman Griselda Blanco for control of Miami’s cocaine market, and then makes an alliance with the drug trafficker, played by Sofia Vergara. Ochoa is also depicted in the Netflix series Narcos, as the youngest son of an elite Medellin family that is into ranching and horse breeding and cuts a sharp contrast with Escobar, who came from more humble roots. Richard Gregorie, a retired assistant U.S. attorney who was on the prosecution team that convicted Ochoa, said authorities were never able to seize all of the Ochoa family’s illicit drug proceeds and he expects that the former mafia boss will have a welcome return home. “He won’t be retiring a poor man, that’s for sure,” Gregorie told The Associated Press earlier this month.
