Police say they received a report of a gunshot at the Thompson General Hospital about 760 kilometres north of Winnipeg on Tuesday afternoon. They say nobody was injured, but officers found a bullet hole in the chapel window. Hospital security had detained the man before officers arrived, police say, and a firearm and ammunition were found at the scene. They say the man has been charged with seven firearm offences, including careless use of a firearm and possession of a firearm when prohibited. Washington (Reuters): Republican President-elect Donald Trump said on Saturday he wanted former National Security official and loyalist Kash Patel to lead the FBI, signaling an intent to drive out the bureau's current director, Christopher Wray. Patel, who during Trump's first term advised both the director of national intelligence and the secretary of defense, has previously called for stripping the FBI of its intelligence-gathering role and purging its ranks of any employee who refuses to support Trump's agenda. "The biggest problem the FBI has had, has come out of its intel shops. I'd break that component out of it. I'd shut down the FBI Hoover building on day one and reopen it the next day as a museum of the deep state," Patel said in a September interview on the conservative Shawn Ryan Show. "And I'd take the 7,000 employees that work in that building and send them across America to chase down criminals. Go be cops. You're cops. Go be cops." With the nomination of Patel, Trump is signaling that he is preparing to carry out his threat to oust Wray, a Republican first appointed by Trump, whose 10-year term at the FBI does not expire until 2027. Asked about Patel's nomination, which will need Senate confirmation, an FBI spokesperson said on Saturday: "Every day, the men and women of the FBI continue to work to protect Americans from a growing array of threats. (AP) — Malik Nabers said calling the New York Giants “soft” after Sunday's embarrassing loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers was a mistake, although the star rookie receiver still plans to speak out when he thinks it's necessary. After talking with coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen and watching video of the Giants' 30-7 defeat , Nabers said Tuesday that "soft” was a poor choice of words. “I don’t think it was really soft. I think it was just a lack of technique,” Nabers said. “We were playing our butts off, we just lacked technique.” The Giants (2-9) trailed 23-0 at halftime and had run only 19 plays on offense. Nabers was not targeted in first the half but still finished with a team-high six catches for 64 yards. Billionaire investor Warren Buffett once referred to Apple ( AAPL 1.02% ) as "probably the best business I know in the world." For years, it has been a top holding in the Berkshire Hathaway ( BRK.A 0.07% ) ( BRK.B -0.01% ) portfolio. Buffett likely remains incredibly bullish on Apple's future, but he has, nonetheless, been selling a lot of the company's stock over the past year. This past quarter marked the fourth consecutive period when Buffett reduced his stake in the iPhone maker. Cumulatively, it results in a fairly sizable change in Berkshire's overall portfolio. While Apple remains the top holding, it isn't taking up nearly as large of a chunk as it was before. Here's how the Berkshire portfolio has changed and what lessons investors can take away from Buffett's latest moves. Apple now accounts for just 23% of Berkshire's portfolio Today, Apple stock makes up less than one-quarter of Berkshire's overall portfolio. That's a significant change from just a year ago when Apple was making up close to half of all of its holdings. Just four stocks back then were representing 71% of Berkshire's holdings, and that has changed dramatically with Buffett's stock sales over the past four quarters. The top four stocks remain the same in Berkshire's portfolio: Apple, American Express , Bank of America , and Coca-Cola are still firmly at the top. But in total, they now account for approximately 59% of the total portfolio. The biggest change is the gap, however. A year ago, the second-largest holding was Bank of America, taking up nearly 9% of the portfolio, which was well behind the near-49% that Apple represented. Today, Apple and American Express are the top two holdings, with the former accounting for 23% of the portfolio and the latter being not far behind at 15%. This doesn't mean Buffett sees anything wrong with Apple's stock It's important to note that while Buffett has drastically trimmed his position in Apple (at $70 billion, his holdings are now less than half of what they were a year ago), that doesn't mean he's any less of a fan of Apple. Buffett's main goal is to look out for shareholder interests, and cashing out profits before possible changes to capital gains taxes might be a motivating factor for him, especially given how well Apple stock has performed over the years, with it now being among the most valuable companies in the world with a market cap of $3.5 trillion. Additionally, Buffett famously doesn't rely on economic forecasts, or make decisions, based on where he thinks the economy is heading. The Berkshire chief is a long-term investor who has remained invested in far more troubling times than where the economy is today. Apple, meanwhile, has generated an impressive $109 billion in free cash flow over the trailing 12 months, which is a clear sign the business is still doing phenomenally well. What can investors learn from Buffett's recent moves? For investors, there are a couple of important takeaways from Buffett's significant stock sales that are worth noting here. The first is that it's OK to sell a stock you like for the sake of securing some profit. You don't need to be all-in on a stock or completely out of it. If it's doing extraordinarily well, a prudent move may be to sell out a good chunk of your holdings. That can minimize your risk if you're worried about a downturn. Secondly, having a more diversified portfolio can be advantageous at a time when valuations are high. If Berkshire's portfolio had still been heavily tilted toward Apple, it would have been more vulnerable to a correction in the markets. Berkshire still isn't all that diverse, with such a huge chunk of its portfolio allocated to just four stocks, but it's certainly more diverse than it was a year ago. Putting your eggs in one highly valued stock, regardless of how much you may love it, can be a risky position to be in. Lastly, there's nothing wrong with holding more cash if you're not sure what to invest in. Buffett has often talked in baseball terms about waiting for a pitch in your "sweet spot" to hit. And that's what I think Berkshire may be doing with its growing cash load . It's waiting for an opportunity to come along, perhaps if there is a market sell-off, to make not just any move but a significant one in value stock that is priced at a discount and which possesses a lot of upside. Having a strong cash balance on hand can free up investors to take a big swing at a great opportunity which comes up.By ALANNA DURKIN RICHER WASHINGTON (AP) — One year after the Jan. 6, 2021 , U.S. Capitol attack, Attorney General Merrick Garland said the Justice Department was committed to holding accountable all perpetrators “at any level” for “the assault on our democracy.” That bold declaration won’t apply to at least one person: Donald Trump. Special counsel Jack Smith’s move on Monday to abandon the federal election interference case against Trump means jurors will likely never decide whether the president-elect is criminally responsible for his attempts to cling to power after losing the 2020 campaign. The decision to walk away from the election charges and the separate classified documents case against Trump marks an abrupt end of the Justice Department’s unprecedented legal effort that once threatened his liberty but appears only to have galvanized his supporters. The abandonment of the cases accusing Trump of endangering American democracy and national security does away with the most serious legal threats he was facing as he returns to the White House. It was the culmination of a monthslong defense effort to delay the proceedings at every step and use the criminal allegations to Trump’s political advantage, putting the final word in the hands of voters instead of jurors. “We always knew that the rich and powerful had an advantage, but I don’t think we would have ever believed that somebody could walk away from everything,” said Stephen Saltzburg, a George Washington University law professor and former Justice Department official. “If there ever was a Teflon defendant, that’s Donald Trump.” While prosecutors left the door open to the possibility that federal charges could be re-filed against Trump after he leaves office, that seems unlikely. Meanwhile, Trump’s presidential victory has thrown into question the future of the two state criminal cases against him in New York and Georgia. Trump was supposed to be sentenced on Tuesday after his conviction on 34 felony counts in his New York hush money case , but it’s possible the sentencing could be delayed until after Trump leaves office, and the defense is pushing to dismiss the case altogether. Smith’s team stressed that their decision to abandon the federal cases was not a reflection of the merit of the charges, but an acknowledgement that they could not move forward under longstanding Justice Department policy that says sitting presidents cannot face criminal prosecution. Trump’s presidential victory set “at odds two fundamental and compelling national interests: On the one hand, the Constitution’s requirement that the President must not be unduly encumbered in fulfilling his weighty responsibilities . . . and on the other hand, the Nation’s commitment to the rule of law,” prosecutors wrote in court papers. The move just weeks after Trump’s victory over Vice President Kamala Harris underscores the immense personal stake Trump had in the campaign in which he turned his legal woes into a political rallying cry. Trump accused prosecutors of bringing the charges in a bid to keep him out of the White House, and he promised revenge on his perceived enemies if he won a second term. “If Donald J. Trump had lost an election, he may very well have spent the rest of his life in prison,” Vice President-elect JD Vance, wrote in a social media post on Monday. “These prosecutions were always political. Now it’s time to ensure what happened to President Trump never happens in this country again.” After the Jan. 6 attack by Trump supporters that left more than 100 police officers injured, Republican leader Mitch McConnell and several other Republicans who voted to acquit Trump during his Senate impeachment trial said it was up to the justice system to hold Trump accountable. The Jan. 6 case brought last year in Washington alleged an increasingly desperate criminal conspiracy to subvert the will of voters after Trump’s 2020 loss, accusing Trump of using the angry mob of supporters that attacked the Capitol as “a tool” in his campaign to pressure then-Vice President Mike Pence and obstruct the certification of Democrat Joe Biden’s victory. Hundreds of Jan. 6 rioters — many of whom have said they felt called to Washington by Trump — have pleaded guilty or been convicted by juries of federal charges at the same courthouse where Trump was supposed to stand trial last year. As the trial date neared, officials at the courthouse that sits within view of the Capitol were busy making plans for the crush of reporters expected to cover the historic case. But Trump’s argument that he enjoyed absolute immunity from prosecution quickly tied up the case in appeals all the way up to the Supreme Court. The high court ruled in July that former presidents have broad immunity from prosecution , and sent the case back to the trial court to decide which allegations could move forward. But the case was dismissed before the trial court could get a chance to do so. But U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon dismissed the case in July on grounds that Smith was illegally appointed . Smith appealed to the Atlanta-based 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, but abandoned that appeal on Monday. Smith’s team said it would continue its fight in the appeals court to revive charges against Trump’s two co-defendants because “no principle of temporary immunity applies to them.” In New York, jurors spent weeks last spring hearing evidence in a state case alleging a Trump scheme to illegally influence the 2016 election through a hush money payment to a porn actor who said the two had sex. A garage was fully involved by the time responders arrived, with heat from the detached building compromising the residence next to it. Crews worked to bring down the flames and keep the fire from spreading. The garage and everything inside was completely destroyed, and some damage was done to the residence exterior, with some smoke damage inside. Damages are estimated to be roughly $125,000. The owner was home at the time and called for help when he saw the flames. He received some slight heat exposure to his face, but did not need serious treatment. Special counsel Jack Smith’s move on Monday to abandon the federal election interference case against Trump means jurors will likely never decide whether the president-elect is criminally responsible for his attempts to cling to power after losing the 2020 campaign. The decision to walk away from the election charges and the separate classified documents case against Trump marks an abrupt end of the Justice Department’s unprecedented legal effort that once threatened his liberty but appears only to have galvanized his supporters. The abandonment of the cases accusing Trump of endangering American democracy and national security does away with the most serious legal threats he was facing as he returns to the White House. It was the culmination of a monthslong defense effort to delay the proceedings at every step and use the criminal allegations to Trump’s political advantage, putting the final word in the hands of voters instead of jurors. “We always knew that the rich and powerful had an advantage, but I don’t think we would have ever believed that somebody could walk away from everything,” said Stephen Saltzburg, a George Washington University law professor and former Justice Department official. “If there ever was a Teflon defendant, that’s Donald Trump.” While prosecutors left the door open to the possibility that federal charges could be re-filed against Trump after he leaves office, that seems unlikely. Trump accused prosecutors of bringing the charges in a bid to keep him out of the White House, and he promised revenge on his perceived enemies if he won a second term. “If Donald J. Trump had lost an election, he may very well have spent the rest of his life in prison,” Vice President-elect JD Vance, wrote in a social media post on Monday. “These prosecutions were always political. Now it’s time to ensure what happened to President Trump never happens in this country again.” After the Jan. 6 attack by Trump supporters that left more than 100 police officers injured, Republican leader Mitch McConnell and several other Republicans who voted to acquit Trump during his Senate impeachment trial said it was up to the justice system to hold Trump accountable. The Jan. 6 case brought last year in Washington alleged an increasingly desperate criminal conspiracy to subvert the will of voters after Trump’s 2020 loss, accusing Trump of using the angry mob of supporters that attacked the Capitol as “a tool” in his campaign to pressure then-Vice President Mike Pence and obstruct the certification of Democrat Joe Biden’s victory. Hundreds of Jan. 6 rioters — many of whom have said they felt called to Washington by Trump — have pleaded guilty or been convicted by juries of federal charges at the same courthouse where Trump was supposed to stand trial last year. As the trial date neared, officials at the courthouse that sits within view of the Capitol were busy making plans for the crush of reporters expected to cover the historic case. But Trump’s argument that he enjoyed absolute immunity from prosecution quickly tied up the case in appeals all the way up to the Supreme Court. The high court ruled in July that former presidents have broad immunity from prosecution , and sent the case back to the trial court to decide which allegations could move forward. But the case was dismissed before the trial court could get a chance to do so. But U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon dismissed the case in July on grounds that Smith was illegally appointed . Smith appealed to the Atlanta-based 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, but abandoned that appeal on Monday. Smith’s team said it would continue its fight in the appeals court to revive charges against Trump’s two co-defendants because “no principle of temporary immunity applies to them.” In New York, jurors spent weeks last spring hearing evidence in a state case alleging a Trump scheme to illegally influence the 2016 election through a hush money payment to a porn actor who said the two had sex. New York prosecutors recently expressed openness to delaying sentencing until after Trump’s second term, while Trump’s lawyers are fighting to have the conviction dismissed altogether. In Georgia, a trial while Trump is in office seems unlikely in a state case charging him and more than a dozen others with conspiring to overturn his 2020 election loss in the state. The case has been on hold since an appeals court agreed to review whether to remove Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis over her romantic relationship with the special prosecutor she had hired to lead the case.
