In all, 23 local races were so close that they triggered an automatic recount. But nine of those resulted in a tie or were decided by three or fewer votes. “While the focus is often on the top of the ticket, local elections can have a big impact in communities across Ohio,” said LaRose, a Republican who is Ohio’s chief elections officer, in a prepared statement. “By doing our part to protect the vote, we are also protecting your voice to ensure the outcome accurately reflects the will of the community.” Of the 23 local races that resulted in an automatic recount – which the law requires when the difference in votes between the losing candidate or question is within 0.5% of the winner, among all votes cast – three issues were tied, three contests were determined by three votes and three contests came down to a single vote. Among some of the standout votes: Voter turnout in 2024 didn’t hit the historic highs that some expected, but millions more cast ballots this year than those who are likely to turn out in 2025. “Local elections which occur in odd-numbered years like 2025 can come down to notoriously slim margins, so it is more important than ever to ensure you are registered to vote and prepared to participate in our democracy in the New Year,” LaRose said. Qatar Charity distributes food baskets to orphans in SudanLAHAINA, Hawaii -- Andrej Jakimovski converted an off-balance layup with 8 seconds left, and Colorado handed No. 2 UConn its second loss in two days at the Maui Invitational, beating the two-time defending national champion 73-72 on Tuesday. A day after a 99-97 overtime loss to Memphis that left Huskies coach Dan Hurley livid about the officiating, UConn (4-2) couldn't shake the unranked Buffaloes (5-1), who shot 62.5% in the second half. With Colorado trailing 72-71 in the closing seconds, Jakimovski drove to his right and absorbed contact from UConn’s Liam McNeeley. He tossed the ball toward the glass and the shot was good as he fell to the floor. Hassan Diarra missed a 3-pointer just ahead of the buzzer for UConn. Elijah Malone and Julian Hammond III scored 16 points each for Colorado, and Jakimovski had 12 points and 10 rebounds. The Huskies led 40-32 at halftime and by nine points early in the second half, but Colorado quickly closed that gap. McNeeley led UConn with 20 points. UConn: Hurley's squad is facing its first adversity in quite a while. The Huskies arrived on Maui with a 17-game winning streak that dated to February. Colorado: The Buffaloes were held to season lows in points (56) and field goal percentage (37%) in a 16-point loss to Michigan State on Monday but shot 51.1% overall and 56.3% (9 of 16) from 3-point range against the Huskies. Hurley called timeout to set up the Huskies' final possession, but the Buffs forced them to take a contested 3. Colorado had a 28-26 rebounding advantage after being out-rebounded 42-29 by Michigan State. Colorado will play the Iowa-Dayton winner in the fifth-place game on Wednesday. UConn will play the loser of that matchup in the seventh-place game. ___ Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. Sign up here . BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Tens of thousands of Spaniards marched in downtown Barcelona on Saturday to protest the skyrocketing cost of renting an apartment in the popular tourist destination. Protesters cut off traffic on main avenues in the city center, holding up homemade signs in Spanish reading “Fewer apartments for investing and more homes for living" and “The people without homes uphold their rights.” The lack of affordable housing has become one of the leading concerns for the southern European Union country, mirroring the housing crunch across many parts of the world, including the United States . Organizers said that over 100,000 had turned out, while Barcelona’s police said they estimated some 22,000 marched. Either way, the throngs of people clogging the streets recalled the massive separatist rallies at the height of the previous decade’s Catalan independence movement. Now, social concerns led by housing have displaced political crusades. That is because the average rent for Spain has doubled in last 10 years. The price per square meter has risen from 7.2 euros ($7.5) in 2014 to 13 euros this year, according to the popular online real estate website Idealista. The growth is even more acute in cities like Barcelona and Madrid. Incomes meanwhile have failed to keep up, especially for younger people in a country with chronically high unemployment. Protestor Samuel Saintot said he is “frustrated and scared” after being told by the owners of the apartment he has rented for the past 15 years in Barcelona’s city center that he must vacate the premises. He suspects that the owners want him out so they can renovate it and boost the price. “Even looking in a 20- or 30-kilometer radius outside town, I can’t even find anything within the price range I can afford,” he told The Associated Press. “And I consider myself a very fortunate person, because I earn a decent salary. And even in my case, I may be forced to leave town.” A report by the Bank of Spain indicates that nearly 40% of Spaniards who rent dedicate an average of 40% of their income to paying rents and utilities, compared to the European Union average of 27% of renters who do so. “We are talking about a housing emergency. It means people having many difficulties both in accessing and staying in their homes,” said Ignasi Martí, professor for Esade business school and head of its Dignified Housing Observatory. The rise in rents is causing significant pain in Spain, where traditionally people seek to own their homes. Rental prices have also been driven up by short-term renters including tourists. Many migrants to Spain are also disproportionately hit by the high rents because they often do not have enough savings. Spain is near the bottom end of OECD countries with under 2% of all housing available being public housing for rent. The OECD average is 7%. Spain is far behind France, with 14%, Britain with 16%, and the Netherlands with 34%. Carme Arcarazo, spokesperson for Barcelona’s Tenants Union which helped organize the protest, said that renters should consider a “rent strike” and cease paying their monthly rents in a mass protest movement. “I think we the tenants have understood that this depends on us. That we can’t keep asking and making demands to the authorities and waiting for an answer. We must take the reins of the situation,” Arcarazo told the AP. “So, if they (the owners) won’t lower the rent, then we will force them to do it." The Barcelona protest came a month after tens of thousands rallied against high rents in Madrid. The rising discontent over housing is putting pressure on Spain’s governing Socialist party, which leads a coalition on the national level and is in charge of Catalonia’s regional government and Barcelona’s city hall. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez presided over what the government termed a “housing summit” including government officials and real estate developers last month. But the Barcelona’s Tenants Union boycotted the event, saying it was like calling a summit for curing cancer and inviting tobacco companies to participate. The leading government measure has been a rent cap mechanism that the central government has offered to regional authorities based on a price index established by the housing ministry. Rent controls can be applied to areas deemed to be “highly stressed” by high rental prices. Catalonia was the first region to apply those caps, which are in place in downtown Barcelona. Many locals blame the million of tourists who visit Barcelona, and the rest of Spain, each year for the high prices. Barcelona’s town hall has pledged to completely eliminate the city’s 10,000 so called “tourist apartments,” or dwellings with permits for short-term rents, by 2028.Published 23:07 IST, December 26th 2024 Manmohan Singh passed away on Thursday evening, December 26, at AIIMS Delhi. With deliveries affected by the Holyhead Port closure ahead of Christmas, An Post is providing daily updates to customers. Storm Darragh has caused a delivery frenzy just ahead of Christmas with Holyhead Port remaining closed until December 19th due to storm damages - according to the Irish Exporters Association. “There is much speculation regarding the date ferry traffic will resume through Holyhead and as of this evening, no date has been verified,” An Post said. “Many UK retailers have worked with ferry companies to secure alternative routes into to Ireland while Holyhead remains closed. “Larger capacity ferries are now accessing Ireland from Wales, Scotland and Liverpool via Rosslare Europort, Larne and Dublin Port, resulting in a much decreased backlog of parcel trucks at Holyhead. “An Post expects to receive approximately 350,000 UK parcels over the next 24 hours and we have the facilities technology and staff across our Dublin, Portlaoise and Athlone hubs to process and deliver them, including 1,400 Christmas casual workers.” An Post said the backlog of parcels in Holyhead for An Post has been reduced from approximately 500,000 to approximately 150,000 due to re-routing. If you made an order pre Storm Darragh and have not received your parcel yet, An Post expect it should arrive in the coming days, but have advised to check directly with your retailer. “If you are planning to order from UK retailers, check with them regarding their delivery dates for Ireland – they may have secured working routes into Ireland, though dispatch times from the UK may take longer than normal,” An Post said. The postal service has advised customers to “shop local with Irish retailers” and “buy Irish”. All outgoing international parcel services are operating normally without delay, An Post confirmed. There will be nationwide parcel deliveries and all post offices will remain open this Saturday, December 14th. An Post will be delivering up to Christmas Eve all parcels they have received by December 21st. A person posts Christmas letters at Dublin's GPO, 13-12-2011. Image: Mark Stedman/RollingNews.ieTELECOMMUNICATION giants PLDT Inc. and Globe Telecom Inc. said on Thursday they are stepping up initiatives to safeguard customers and enterprises from malicious online activities, as cyber threats and scams continue to proliferate in the Philippines. In separate statements, both companies said they have developed comprehensive measures to counter cybercrime, underscoring their commitment to create a safer digital environment. PLDT Enterprise First Vice President John Gonzales said the group is focusing on cutting-edge technological solutions to combat cybercrime, particularly as mobile transactions dominate the digital landscape. “The Philippines is a mobile-first country. Today, 64 percent of transactions here are conducted on mobile devices, and because of the high volume of transactions, the Philippines has become a major target for malicious actors,” Gonzales said. He said PLDT has aligned with GSMA’s Open Gateway Initiative, which fosters standardized APIs for secure and seamless digital experience. He cited the rollout of three key services in 2024: silent authentication to replace OTPs, device location validation for fraud detection, and enhanced Know Your Customer (KYC) processes to ensure secure transactions. “PLDT and Smart fully understand the critical role of telcos in fighting fraudulent activities. We are very thankful for GSMA who has been driving anti-fraud measures globally by uniting telcos, app developers, enterprises and other stakeholders to create mechanisms against fraud,” Gonzales said. In addition to technological advancements, PLDT and Smart are proactively collaborating with industry stakeholders and government agencies to tackle scams like SMShing and the use of illegal cell towers. The group has already blocked nearly two billion malicious text messages and blacklisted almost a million scam-related numbers in 2024. “Our role in continuously educating consumers and enterprises is also something we take seriously. Together, we must continue to build awareness of cybercrimes and ways to prevent them, putting in place a comprehensive defense against fraud and scams,” he said. Globe Telecom, meanwhile, is using its Digital Thumbprint Program (DTP) to educate Filipinos on digital citizenship and cybersecurity. The program reached 6,196 participants in 2024, including students, parents, and community members all over the country. “With the accelerated digital transformation comes growing online threats, particularly fraud, to which more and more Filipinos fall victim every day. These threats rob online customers of their hard-earned money, impacting their mental and physical health,” said Yoly Crisanto, Chief Sustainability and Corporate Communications Officer at Globe. In November alone, the DTP reached 450 participants in areas like Ilocos Sur, Pampanga, Rizal, and Davao del Norte, offering workshops on recognizing scams, ethical internet use, and AI ethics. These sessions are part of Globe’s broader efforts to promote digital safety and responsibility, particularly among young Filipinos. “Globe believes the antidote is education, that’s why we are bringing DTP to schools across the country. If our young people are aware of what to look out for and how to protect themselves online, they will get to enjoy the benefits of technology safely, spared from becoming another scam statistic,” she added. Globe’s impact extends beyond education, with its active blocking of threats such as spam, scam SMS, and harmful websites. By the third quarter of 2024, Globe had blocked 162.7 million scam texts, 167,408 malicious URLs, and 20,509 scam-linked SIMs, among others.
