Before Nicola, her mother had passed away from the same cancer when Benn was two. So did her grandmother, aunt, and great-grandfather. “My dad always thought it might be some kind of hereditary component to the type of cancer that my mom had, but it was never confirmed at the time,” Benn said. Shortly after Nicola's death, a gastroenterologist strongly suggested that Benn undergo surgery to remove her stomach, given the close genetic link between the twins. Nine months later, the young woman decided to go forward with full gastrostomy, unbeknownst to her if she was carrying the same ailment. Grieving the loss of her sister and uncertain if she had made the right decision, Benn received news six years later confirming her choice had been the correct one. After performing a biopsy on the young woman’s stomach, pathologists discovered traces of cancer in the organ’s lining - something that could not have been detected even with an endoscopy. Little did they know, the Benns, along with another family from Detroit, were part of a groundbreaking discovery that transformed the lives of countless families. For the first time in history, researchers identified a genetic mutation in Natasha’s stomach which they named CDH1. This mutation was found to carry an 83 per cent risk of developing stomach cancer and 60 per cent likelihood of lobular breast cancer. In the early days of genetic testing, means were limited, costly, and slow. Today, however, researchers can examine more genes than ever before with greater efficiency, at a higher rate, for a fraction of what it once cost. “We've had families that were seen years ago where it looks like there was something going on in the family... and we didn't find anything,” said Nuk. “Now we go back to test that same family [and] we're actually picking up mutations because the technology has improved so much.” Though many remain to be studied, Nuk and her team can now detect rogue genes causing numerous cancers including ovarian, breast, and colon. The lead geneticist added that the services offered by the program are twofold; genetic testing to identify individuals carrying mutated genes, and the provision of personalized care plans for those at increased cancer risk. “If we can figure out someone's at higher risk... we have a much better chance of offering better outcomes for the patient,” she said. People are provided with comprehensive information and a range of options, allowing them to make informed decisions about their next steps. As prevention is key to combating cancer, Nuk and her team will discuss and propose to their patients appropriate screening options, such as mammograms or MRIs, as well as preventative measures like vaccines and surgeries suited to their respective conditions. In turn, Nuk added that if one treatment can be given over another more invasive one, this will ultimately result in a better quality of life for individuals and benefit the overall health-care system. Since its inception in 1997, the prevention program has not only saved thousands of lives but also reduced health-care costs for taxpayers, freed up time and resources for other cancer patients, and alleviated the burden on B.C.'s hospitals. According to an initial investigation by the cybersecurity firm Cyberhaven, the malicious extension was designed to steal sensitive data, including access tokens, user IDs, account information and cookies. This breach puts Facebook Ads users at high risk of data theft and account hacking. The cybersecurity company reported in a blog post that its Chrome extension was hacked on December 24, in an attack targeting logins to certain social media advertising and AI platforms. Other extensions, including ParrotTalks, Uvoice, and VPNCity, were also affected, starting in mid-December, according to Nudge Security's Jaime Blasco, Reuters reported. The researchers said it first detected the breach on December 25 and was able to remove the malicious version of the extension within an hour. "On December 24, a phishing attack compromised a Cyberhaven employee's credentials to the Google Chrome Web Store. The attacker used these credentials to publish a malicious version of our Chrome extension (version 24.10.4). Our security team detected this compromise at 11:54 PM UTC on December 25 and removed the malicious package within 60 minutes," Cyberhaven wrote in a blog post. According to the company, yhe incident was brief and limited. Only version 24.10.4 of the Cyberhaven Chrome extension was affected and the malicious code was active between 1:32 AM UTC on December 25 and 2:50 AM UTC on December 26. Only Chrome browsers that auto-updated during this time were impacted. "Our investigation found that no other Cyberhaven systems were compromised," the company said. For browsers with the affected extension, the malicious code may have stolen cookies and login sessions from certain websites. IRVING, Texas -- The NFL will consider expanding replay assist to include facemask penalties and other plays. Officials have missed several obvious facemask penalties this season, including two in a three-week span during Thursday night games. “When we see it, because I see it like yourselves and the fans, I have an opportunity to see it from a different angle and see it from a slow-mo,” NFL executive Troy Vincent said Wednesday at the league’s winter meetings. “When you think about the position of where the officials are, things are happening so fast. Sometimes the facemask can be the same color as the gloves. There’s a lot happening. Concerning? Yes, because that’s a big miss. That’s a big foul. That’s why we would like to consider putting that for the membership to consider putting that foul category that we can see, putting that (penalty flag) on the field to help. There is a frustration, and we believe that is one category we can potentially get right." The North Carolina Tar Heels are expected to hire former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, a six-time Super Bowl winner, as their head coach, according to multiple reports. ESPN and NFL Network were first to report the news. Belichick, 72, coached the Patriots from 2000 to 2023. He won Super Bowls after the 2001, 2003, 2004, 2014, 2016 and 2018 seasons before he and New England mutually parted ways in January. Belichick is second on the NFL’s all-time coaching wins list, with 333. He also won two Super Bowls as the New York Giants' defensive coordinator after the 1987 and 1990 seasons. The Tar Heels fired head coach Mack Brown on Nov. 26. Brown, who previously coached at North Carolina from 1988 to 1997, led the team for the last six seasons. He had a 43-33 record during his second stint, winning one bowl game. The Tar Heels have not won a conference championship since 1980. They last appeared in the ACC championship game in 2022. Belichick has never coached in college. He began his coaching career as an assistant with the Baltimore Colts in 1975, then spent two years with the Detroit Lions and one with the Denver Broncos. The Giants hired Belichick as a special teams assistant in 1979 and promoted him to defensive coordinator in 1985. He instead left for New England, where he was given final say over player personnel in addition to his coaching duties. Though he oversaw six Super Bowl wins, Belichick’s relationship with Patriots owner Robert Kraft reportedly grew strained in 2020. That year, Belichick decided the Patriots would part ways with quarterback Tom Brady, who started in all of New England’s Super Bowl wins and is headed to the Hall of Fame as one of the greatest signal callers of all time.
