The Iran-backed Houthis' media outlet confirmed the strikes in a Telegram post but gave no immediate details. The U.S. military also has targeted the Houthis in Yemen in recent days. The United Nations has noted that the targeted ports are important entryways for humanitarian aid for Yemen, the poorest Arab nation that plunged into a civil war in 2014 . Over the weekend, 16 people were wounded when a Houthi missile hit a playground in the Israeli city of Tel Aviv . Last week, Israeli jets struck Sanaa and Hodeida, killing nine people, calling it a response to previous Houthi attacks. The Houthis also have been targeting shipping on the Red Sea corridor, calling it solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza. The U.N. Security Council has scheduled an emergency meeting Monday in response to an Israeli request that the council condemn the Houthi attacks and Iran for supplying weapons to the rebels. Meanwhile, an Israeli strike killed five Palestinian journalists outside a hospital in the Gaza Strip overnight , the territory's Health Ministry said. The Israeli military said that all were militants posing as reporters. The strike hit a car outside Al-Awda Hospital in the built-up Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza. The journalists were working for the local news outlet Al-Quds Today, a television channel affiliated with the Islamic Jihad militant group. Islamic Jihad is a smaller and more extreme ally of Hamas and took part in the Oct. 7, 2023 attack in southern Israel, which ignited the war. The Israeli military identified four of the men as combat propagandists and said that intelligence, including a list of Islamic Jihad operatives found by soldiers in Gaza, had confirmed that all five were affiliated with the group. Hamas, Islamic Jihad and other Palestinian militant groups operate political, media and charitable operations in addition to their armed wings. After Thanksgiving, I watched a new documentary that set me at odds with December's frenzied pace. For me, the month has evolved from a time of calm reflection into a month of haves and wants. National Geographic’s "Tsunami: Race Against Time" chronicles the ravaging impact of the 2004 Indian Ocean eruption on Thailand and numerous other Southeast Asian countries. It hit me hard and gave me the jolt to ask myself how to get off the consumer train. Southeast Asia has my heart; my family and I lived in Asia beginning in the early 2000s. Our children were little then, and we established a set of holiday traditions that meant Christmas in Bangkok with minimal gifts and maximum adventures. The Thais are beautiful people, welcoming and gracious. The Dec. 26, 2004, earthquake and resulting tsunami in the Indian Ocean wrecked countless lives. It killed nearly a quarter of a million people in that region, including thousands of Thais and tourists. The documentary is spellbinding. The viewer becomes a participant in the unbelievable scenery and chaotic devastation the giant waves caused in the early hours of the day after Christmas. Watching the four-part series on a streaming platform created an alarming experience of seeing the water washing away beachgoers, buildings, and even a train. Frequent advertising, however, distracted from and contrasted with the presentation. Ads for mobile phones, fast-food restaurants and shoes horrifyingly broke up the narrative every few minutes: T-Mobile, Chick-fil-A, and DSW in between actual human misery. Relentless phone ads foreshadowed the documentary’s disaster just before smartphones became omnipresent. Ironically, frantic scientists in the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Honolulu were tracking the earthquake and tsunami in real time and struggled as they had few options to warn the millions of people who dotted the ocean’s coastlines and were exposed and vulnerable to the massive waves. Today's ads show an American life that seems superficial, too loud, too brightly lit, and primed for consumption compared with 20 years ago. Toggling between the ads and the documentary left me thinking about how to revise my forecast. I don't want to be an extreme version of humankind. Too many technology advancements are going somewhere scary where we all require experiences and stuff on demand, catered precisely to our highly refined sense of personal algorithms. I know a lot of good comes from the high-tech advancements, including ways to help warn about natural disasters such as future tsunamis. What is not good is the louder, self-focused lives presently occupied. I will do better in 2025. I will think more about how to spend my time, effort, and money and try to pay back. And I wondered which “god” we were talking about, is it the god on the Plateau that we keep fighting for and on behalf of while the same stones are moved out of the Wase axis of the state by the same Chinese? We are a nation where the government has to explain the rationale of giving or not giving concessions to persons going to pray to “their gods” and citizens are bothered that if it was done for faith A, then why the noise of faith B? This is the country of plenty parties, the sweet life, loud music, order in disorder, we cry about of dollars expended on getting us rice to eat, like that is the only staple or cheapest food...alas the truth remains that while wealth abounds all around us, we are either Boko-ing ourselves or avenging some haram done to the Niger Delta region. Things were better when we ate rice with those eye-popping beef on Sallah, it was the era when Christians could not wait for the Eid to come because we would see the Ram-fights, and partake of the ‘kaza’ (meat). They were the good times, no one thought or was afraid of Islamization. I dare remind us that then China was a pariah nation. We suddenly started killing ourselves, we got it all messed up, or maybe we never even got it right, the years rolled by, and Nigeria, the nation where the problem wasn’t the money but how to spend it, could not even produce a light bulb, was importing pencils and pens with which her leaders stole them dry in all sort of manners. It was the days of Nigeria Airways, the good old Nigerian Railways that owed salaries only compared to its equally old Daily Times, then we ate rice only once in a while but what happened, the Chinese came and if they were not repairing or building new railroads for us, they were now bringing made by prisoners in China ‘adire’ (Yoruba fabric) for us. We even started teaching Chinese in some of our schools, everyone was and is leaving Nigeria and we are still shouting and asking God to arise and let His enemies to scatter when indeed we are our enemies, we are the same people denying ourselves greatness by both our actions and inactions. We have taken religion to a new nauseating high, while we are a people bent on self-destruction, and ever-increasing hate ratio. We are only united by our mutual desire for rice, and ‘god’, but divided on who wants to work for it, who should work, whether we should be working. We still are dependent on everyone but ourselves for everything and most things, the sad reality is we remain the goldmine; we remain the great potential that could have been great. We remain unsure what we want whether regionalism, tax reforms, restructuring, we do not know whether state and religion are one and the same of differently the same, when stealing is not corruption, padding is neither, we keep soldiering on, praying with the same lips we lie with, until we know that there is no food for lazy man and resort to working out the true Nigerian spirit, will prayers without work achieve anything? Only time will tell, and may Nigeria work, may Nigeria win.

FLORENCE — Texas Department of Public Safety will graduate 130 recruits next week following 29 weeks of rigorous physical, mental and situational training, part of which occurred just 20 miles south of Killeen. Class B-2024, which began May 20, is about to complete the rigorous six-month course. Last week, officials held a joint field training exercise at the DPS Tactical Training Center in Florence in Williamson County. “We provide a quality of training which is excellent,” said the facility’s Assistant Chief of Training Derek Prestridge. “Our intensive program and in-resident training brings value to our academy and a level of excellence that is a part of the core value of this organization.” Texas Department of Public Safety Assistant Chief of Training Lt. Derek Prestridge explains some of the strategies taught at the training center near Florence. The in-resident training allows recruits to experience the physical challenges of being away from family members and friends. One instructor said the arrangements inside the building where recruits stay are not like hotel accommodations. Recruits sleep on cots, or on the floor, or periodically wherever they can catch a nap. The reasoning behind this type of training is to see how recruits deal with mental and emotional situations which may be brought on by uncomfortable accommodations or the lack of adequate sleep, rest and daily schedule. For a portion of the physical training, there are 16 stations set up throughout the 200-acre training area. The training center has a three-mile track used to teach vehicle dynamics, coned skill courses, a road course, pursuit and emergency response tactics. There are three towers which give instructors the ability to run all electrical signs, lights, gates, security cameras and for visual observation. The Texas DPS training facility near Florence is home to 130 recruits who reside there during the last week of skills training The driving course is designed to teach precision driving skills within the urban environment, skid control and high-speed pursuit skills. The course is also used to teach crash investigation techniques. Included on the course: a paved level surface which, when wet, offers a slick surface to practice driving in those conditions in order to prepare for real-life situations. On Thursday, instructors had set up several exercises which would simulate conditions similar to a traffic stop. The first exercise involved a civilian vehicle which appeared to be broken down on the side of a road. Recruits are given no more information than that as they drive toward the vehicle, stop and attempt to survey the situation. The recruit attempts to make contact with a man who is under the hood of the vehicle by shouting out. In this case, the man yells back at the recruit to go away. As the recruit steps closer to the man’s vehicle it appears he has a gun and begins to shoot at the recruit. The recruit returns fire, appearing to have hit the man who falls to the ground, and is still. The recruit moves to the rear of the DPS vehicle, while using the radio to notify a dispatcher that help is needed and the important details of the stop. This all happens very quickly, in a matter of minutes. After the role-play is complete, instructors who have shadowed the recruit and watched from a close proximity, give the recruit feedback. These drills are run several times throughout the training period in many different circumstances. Another exercise involved a situation in which another trooper might be using excessive force. The recruit is told he is being called to assist in the take-down of a criminal, but when the recruit approaches, the original trooper appears to be using a baton to hit his suspect in the back of the head with excessive force. In this case, the recruit had to quickly assess the scene, determine the severity of the troopers actions and decide how to assist. One recruit used his own strength to pull the offending trooper off the suspect while assessing whether or not the trooper was in control of himself and his actions. Then, in an instant, the recruit apprehended the suspect and called dispatch to alert them of the situation. Another recruit was set up at the same station a few minutes later to test their assessment and action taken. This time, after pulling the trooper from the suspect, the recruit pushed the offending trooper to the ground and proceeded to handcuff him. When asked why by his instructors later, the recruit said the trooper appeared to continue his bad behavior even after the recruit arrived and told him to stop. These two exercises had very different endings and neither were wrong, according to instructor Lt. Michael Monaghan. “In the second case, the recruit felt they might be in danger, due to the aggressive demeanor of the trooper,” Monaghan said. “This is all part of the training and could happen out in the real world.” In this first exercise, the recruit in the gray shirt has pulled over to assess the situation of a car with a raised hood on the side of the road. The suspect is seen pulling a weapon from his pants and the recruit must call on her training to follow through with the stop. In another exercise, recruits were tested at an intersection where the driver of a vehicle sped past and the task was to make a traffic stop. It was all going along well, until the other driver decided to speed away from the stop taking some twisting turns and leaving the roadway. After pursuing the driver with sirens, lights and a PA call to pull over, the driver slowed down again. Before the recruit could stop his vehicle, the driver of the other car was off again, finally coming to a stop several hundred yards in front of the recruit. By this time, a second DPS vehicle had joined the pursuit as back up. The remainder of the stop consisted of giving the suspect directions as the recruits from both vehicles trained their guns on him. There was a series of commands given in order to subdue the driver, check the vehicle for other passengers and calm the situation down. In this exercise, there were several options open to the recruits to complete the test. “If an instructor believes additional training is needed, recruits will circle back through the situations that gave them difficulty,” Monaghan said. “The purpose of this is to help recruits feel at ease with their decisions and to develop the confidence to make snap decisions and follow-through in a safe manner.” Monaghan also pointed out that on every stop there are so many variables that they couldn’t possibly set them all up. He also said that the academy brings in experts in their field to assist in some of the scenarios. There are emerging threats that come up and the training needs to stay ahead and up to date with the latest methods, technology and strategies. The mission of the DPS’s Training Operations Division is to prepare law enforcement leaders and peace officers to meet 21st Century demands and challenges. The division develops a wide variety of world-class training and education programs and delivers them to public safety professionals within the department and throughout the state. Recruits, in the gray shirts, hold a suspect at gunpoint and verbally instruct him on how to proceed during this traffic stop exercise. “The Texas Department of Public Safety is committed to recruiting and training a diverse workforce that reflect our values of integrity, excellence, accountability and teamwork,” Prestridge said. The rigorous recruit training includes the basic peace officer course, which exceeds mandatory licensing requirements established by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement. Trooper trainees are educated by experts on criminal and traffic law enforcement, crash investigation, crisis intervention, use of force, emergency casualty care, criminal investigations, communications, cultural diversity, fitness and wellness and many other areas, gaining the knowledge and skills necessary to perform the job of a highway patrol trooper anywhere in Texas. “The Texas DPS is the premier law enforcement agency in the state, as well as one of the finest in the nation,” according to the state’s website. In order to meet the many challenges facing law enforcement today, the department operates a world-class training program. Law Enforcement Education educates and trains recruits, troopers, agents, and other law enforcement officers across the state. Students study tactical vehicle operation, firearms, use of force, effective report writing, communications skills, and first aid, as well as other topics. Physical training and arrest and control tactics training are also core elements of the program. At the end of training, recruits are taken to DPS headquarters in Austin and given a chance to prepare for graduation. The annual DPS Legacy Run took place on Friday. The four-mile run went from the DPS Fallen Officers Memorial at DPS headquarters to the Peace Officers Memorial at the Texas State Capitol. First implemented in 2008, recruits and instructors have said it is a way to mark the end of the 30-week training academy. According to the DPS website, trooper trainees are accompanied by their instructors, members of DPS leadership and often times DPS retirees. Before leaving the Training Center, Prestridge talked about the relationship DPS has with legislators in Austin. “Our training brings value to the state,” Prestridge said. “We have the ear of legislators and have worked with them to help equip our facilities and provide state-of-the art technology. Soon after his arrival, he also meets his new teaching assistant, CeCe (Sara Silva), who wears him down in order to secure the role to bolster her résumé. Initially hesitant to accept her help, Chadwick warms to his TA thanks to her anxious but dedicated work ethic, as well as her flare for debate — a notable turn from the somewhat unsophisticated nature of Ronald’s relationship with Cecile in the 1999 film. This CeCe keeps Chadwick on his toes, physically and intellectually, which results in more than the typical respect and admiration that can grow between mentor and mentee. But by the end of the season, a potential romantic future between the two is put to the test when he is found in bed with Caroline Merteuil (Sarah Catherine Hook), CeCe’s friend and sorority president. Thomas spoke to before the show’s release about returning to ; why a TV spinoff might not have been possible before now; his professor character’s romantic and intellectual relationship with his TA; and the shifts in opportunity for Black actors in the 25 years since Kumble’s film. *** It’s very exciting for me to come back and do after all this time. It’s rewarding on so many levels, because I’m still here, number one. This is a tough business and I’m still here, and there’s something symbolic about that full-circle moment that really hits me. Also, I’m a much more seasoned man right now than I was then, a much more seasoned actor. So to get another chance to do this type of material with 20-something years more experience under my belt is a real treat and a real gift. I was briefly involved with one [show] from like 20 years ago called . I think the issue with that the is so intense, and raw to the bone, that the full breadth of what that is wasn’t really a fit with network TV at that time. So there was stuff that you couldn’t do then that you can do now — and we’re doing it on this show. When I heard the show was coming up, obviously, it was an exciting thing to hear, and I got to talk with the director, the writers and producers and it was just a fit. The character that they’d written, Professor Chadwick, was something that was an exciting evolution from the Ronald-ish character from the movie. But it’s a different vibe, and that’s what was exciting. I can’t speak to whether it was intentional, but what was exciting to play was in the movie, the obstacle of why these people really couldn’t or shouldn’t be together was race, let’s be blunt. In this version, it’s because he’s a professor and she’s a student. What’s great about that is that it hints possibly at maybe, as a society, we’re a little bit better than we were, where we don’t have to talk about race in that way. I’m not sure if we’re better right now, but it hints at the possibility that we’re better, I’ll put it that way. So we were able to put race to the side and explore other dynamics, and this dynamic would be teacher-student relationships at a college. In that sense, the forbidden nature of it is a whole different thing, and it has more to do with things that you can control and not things that you can’t control, which to me, is much more interesting. I think the cruelty in this iteration of the story is much more modern in the sense that things can go viral. When you’re talking about something from 1999, the whole issue behind the meaning of the word “viral” just didn’t exist. It does now, and you can embarrass somebody or shame somebody or destroy somebody with the push of a button in the modern age. So I think that takes the cruelty issue and cranks it up 10 notches in terms of how you can deploy it to hurt other people. When you age these characters up a little bit to college, it opens up a whole new world of things that you can do. When you’re able to broaden your palette of things that you can do in terms of storytelling, then you can really go a little bit deeper in terms of the themes that you’re exploring, whether it’s absolute power corrupts absolutely, as you always hear in history class, or themes of power imbalance. You get more opportunities to do that when the characters are aged up a little bit, but still young. There’s a right way and a wrong way to do things. I like to see people try and do things the right way, because this is a show where everybody else is doing everything the wrong way. I like the fact that this is a relationship that is a contrast to all of that — that these are two good people that have a genuine, pure connection and they want to make sure they go about it the right way. They’re not trying to hurt each other, they’re not trying to hurt anybody else. That’s what I want audiences to see — that that’s possible, that that exists in a world that seems chaotic and mean sometimes. ( ) I honestly think they just dork out on political science. I think that they’re both willing to be intellectually exploratory about seeing the pros and cons of whatever side that you’re on in terms of fascism, for example. I don’t know that they’re fascinated with fascism, per se. I just think they’re fascinated with playing devil’s advocate with each other. There’s something about that that excites them both, and that’s where they connect. Fascism is the vehicle that they use to poke each other and challenge each other and make each other think. Here’s the thing: I think that Professor Chadwick is written in such a way where race is not a factor. However, when you cast me and somebody who looks like me in that role, then you have a whole other level of stuff going on. I really agree with you that Professor Chadwick can’t just worry about, “Gosh, am I gonna be able to keep my job?” He has to worry about, “Am I gonna be treated fairly because of the way I look, and is this a factor in how my case is going to be perceived?” I think that’s just extra from having this character played by somebody that looks like me and that’s a great layer to lay on to what’s already a troubling situation. I don’t know anything about season two. I know nothing. We have not talked about that. I’m assuming that they have a plan, because they’re both very smart and they seem to have a plan for everything. So I’m pretty sure that they have something, locked and loaded, story-wise, for Professor Chadwick. I just haven’t heard it yet. What’s exciting to me is that I didn’t see it growing up. On , I’m a Black father, and there are certain complexities that you can’t compare to any other father-son relationship. There’s certain things about being a Black father that are very specific and have to be dealt with in a different way. When you’re telling a story, you can’t just say, “Oh, this is just a dad and this is just a son.” There’s something very specific about a Black father and a Black son that has almost never been explored in TV and film, and I’m very, very proud that I’ve gotten a chance to do that. On , in particular, we really get into that on a very, very deep level. I mean, Chance isn’t with us anymore, and during season two, we don’t really take any shortcuts in digging into what it is to be a Black man and what it is to have that type of connection with your son and the things that you can and cannot protect him from. We really get into that in season two. I do feel like things are changing, but I will say that it’s not enough. The quality of the roles that we get now is far superior than when I first started in this business. When I first started, if you were a Black actor, most of what you got to do was comic relief or some type of sidekick, or you had to be some type of threatening presence. You really couldn’t break out of that box. Now, you can be a nerd, you can be gay, you can be whatever. As a Black actor, which is amazing, there’s this full range of who we are as human beings. We’re starting to see that with Black actors, which is phenomenal. That said, there’s not enough. There’s not enough in terms of quality. There’s lots of stuff that’s out there that’s Black, but it’s not three-dimensional. It’s not fully dimensional. It doesn’t show the full range of who we are.
