President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine needs to strengthen its air defences to protect people after its air defence units shot down 50 of 73 Russian drones launched overnight over many regions. "An air alert has been sounded almost daily across Ukraine this week,"Zelenskyy said on Telegram on Sunday. Over the past week Russia used more than 800 guided aerial bombs , about 460 attack drones, and more than 20 missiles of various types, Zelenskyy said. "Ukraine is not a testing ground for weapons. Ukraine is a sovereign and independent state. But Russia still continues its efforts to kill our people, spread fear and panic, and weaken us," he said. The Ukrainian military said earlier on Sunday that air defence units had destroyed more than 10 Russian drones that were targeting Kyiv in an overnight attack. After Sunday’s blowout, Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has improved to a 7-0 career record against the New England Patriots . According to CBS , that’s the best record any active quarterback has against another NFL team. After the game, the 26-year-old quarterback was asked about extending his unbeaten streak against New England. “It’s great,” Tagovailoa said. “Any time you can find a win against a divisional opponent. It’s not my win. It’s a team win. So I’ll leave that at them.” Like the turkeys that will sit on tables across the nation in a few days, Tagovailoa carved up the Patriots once again. He finished the day 29-of-40 passing for 317 yards and 4 touchdowns, good for a passer rating of 128.9. It’s not the first time Tagovailoa has gone off against New England. During last season’s matchup in October, Tagovailoa threw for 324 yards and 3 touchdowns -- but did throw a pick. Heading into the game, Tagovailoa had completed 68.3% of his passes for 216.5 yards per game, 7 touchdowns and four interceptions in his career against New England. Tagovailoa was inactive for one game against New England as a rookie in 2020 and missed a 2022 matchup due to injury. The Dolphins lost both games. More Patriots Content
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — When the San Francisco 49ers used a third-round pick to draft Jake Moody last year, the hope was it would settle their kicking position for years to come. A shaky second half to Moody's second season with San Francisco has put that into question headed to the offseason. Moody missed his sixth field goal in the past seven games last week, leading to questions about whether the 49ers will need to replace him or at least bring in competition for next season. Coach Kyle Shanahan expressed confidence in Moody on Thursday, attributing some of the struggles to a high ankle sprain he suffered in his kicking leg earlier in the season. “I still feel the same about him, that I believe he is going to be our guy," Shanahan said. “Everyone has got to perform and do things like that and I think he has had a tough year. ... I thought he was doing really well and then had a high ankle sprain to his kicking foot. Since he’s come back, he hasn’t been as consistent, obviously. But I think a lot of that probably has to do with that, just common-sense wise.” Moody got off to a strong start this season, making all six field goals he attempted in the season opener and going 13 for 14 before injuring his ankle while attempting to make a tackle on a kickoff return in Week 5. He missed three games and has struggled since he returned. He missed three field goals in first first game back at Tampa Bay, two more in the snow at Buffalo in Week 13 and then a 41-yarder last week against the Dolphins. “That’s the great thing about kicking is, you can be as talented as whoever and you can struggle,” Moody said. “I feel like this year, I’ve struggled. It doesn’t really waver my confidence or anything. I feel like, throughout my entire life, I’ve gone through struggles, I’ve gone through high points. The biggest thing is to just stay consistent, not change anything.” Moody had an up-and-down rookie season, making 21 of 25 field goals in the regular season and missing only one extra point. But he missed a potential game-winning kick in a loss at Cleveland and missed field goals in playoff wins against Green Bay and Detroit. Moody then made three field goals in the Super Bowl with two coming from more than 50 yards, including a go-ahead 53-yard kick late in the fourth quarter against Kansas City. But Moody also had an extra point blocked in that game. “I believe we’ve got the right guy and I think that eventually, I think he has shown that at times,” Shanahan said. "I thought he showed that at times his rookie year. I thought he showed that big time being 12 out of 13 to start this year. And I think he’ll show us all that in the future.” NOTES: The Niners placed LT Trent Williams on IR after his ankle injury hasn't healed as quickly as hoped. Shanahan didn't think there were any long-term issues. ... LB Dre Greenlaw (calf) will be shut down for the rest of the season after playing parts of two games in his return from a torn left Achilles tendon. ... OL Spencer Burford (calf) didn't practice but might be able to play this week. ... San Francisco has signed two OL this week, adding Matt Hennessy and Charlie Heck. ... RB Isaac Guerendo (hamstring, foot) was limited but appears on track to play this week. AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/NFLNoneCalifornia Governor Gavin Newsom and state lawmakers returned to the state Capitol on Monday to begin a special session to protect the state's progressive policies ahead of another Trump presidency. The Democratic governor, a fierce critic of President-elect Donald Trump, is positioning California to once again be the center of a resistance effort against the conservative agenda. He is asking his Democratic allies in the Legislature, who hold supermajorities in both chambers, to approve additional funding to the attorney general's office to prepare for a robust legal fight against anticipated federal challenges. Democratic Assembly member Jesse Gabriel on Monday introduced legislation to set aside $25 million for legal fees to respond to potential attacks by the Trump administration on state policies regarding civil rights, climate change, immigration and abortion access. “While we always hope to collaborate with our federal partners, California will be ready to vigorously defend our interests and values from any unlawful action by the incoming Trump Administration,” Gabriel said in a statement. California sued the first Trump administration more than 120 times to various levels of success. “We’re not going to be caught flat-footed,” Newsom said at a recent news conference. Trump often depicts California as representing all he sees wrong in America. Democrats, which hold every statewide office in California and have commanding margins in the Legislature and congressional delegation, outnumber registered Republicans by nearly 2-to-1 statewide. Trump called the Democratic governor “New-scum” during a campaign stop in Southern California and has relentlessly lambasted the Democratic stronghold over its large number of immigrants in the U.S. illegally, homeless population and thicket of regulations. Trump also waded into a water rights battle over the endangered delta smelt, a tiny fish that has pitted environmentalists against farmers and threatened to withhold federal aid to a state increasingly under threat from wildfires. He also vowed to follow through with his campaign promise of carrying out the mass deportation of immigrants without legal status and prosecuting his political enemies. Before the special session was set to begin, state lawmakers swore in more than two dozen new members and elected leaders for the 2025 legislative session. Hundreds of people also demonstrated around the Capitol on Monday to urge the Legislature to try to stop Trump's mass deportation plans. They carried banners that said “Not one cent for mass deportation” and “MAGA out of California.” “With the results of the presidential election, we need our state elected officials to use every tool and every resource they have available to them to protect our immigrant Californians,” protester Deborah Lee said. State Attorney General Rob Bonta said his office will protect the state’s immigrant population, while Newsom last week unveiled a proposal to revive a rebate program for electric vehicle purchases if the incoming Trump administration eliminates a federal tax credit for people who buy electric cars. Newsom is also considering creating a backup disaster relief fund for the wildfire-prone state after Trump’s threats. Bonta announced legislation Monday aimed at bolstering reproductive rights in the state, including by allowing the attorney general to seek monetary penalties against local governments that infringe on those rights. The proposals are part of the state's efforts to safeguard against threats to abortion access after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. Republican lawmakers blasted Newsom and his Democratic allies over the special session. Representative Vince Fong, who represents the state’s Central Valley farm belt, said California should work with the incoming Trump administration instead. “Gavin Newsom’s actions are tone-deaf to the concerns of Californians who disapprove of the direction of our state and country,” Fong said in a video on social media. Legislators also are expected to spend the year discussing ways to protect dozens of laws expected to be targeted by the Trump administration, including one that has made the state a sanctuary for people seeking abortions who live in states where such practices have been severely limited. California, the nation’s most populous state, was the first to mandate that by 2035 all new cars, pickup trucks and SUVs sold in California be electric, hydrogen-powered or plug-in hybrids. The state also extends state-funded health care to all low-income residents regardless of their immigration status. Newsom hasn't provided details about what actions the lawmakers will consider but said he wanted funding in place before Trump's inauguration day, January 20. The state spent roughly $42 million in litigation costs during the first Trump administration, officials said.

Cardinals' feel-good month comes to a screeching halt after a head-scratching loss to SeahawksCanada is launching a new online ad campaign cautioning asylum-seekers that making an immigration claim is “not easy.” In a statement provided to the Star on Monday, spokesperson for the Ministry of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Michelle Carbert confirmed the campaign, meant to equip people early in their asylum journey with “real facts,” will launch early next year and run through March. By mid-January, those searching the web with certain immigration inquiries will be met with sponsored content titled, “Canada’s asylum system - Asylum Facts.” Carbert said the campaign will target “all searches” relating to claiming asylum in Canada, which the ministry identified using Google’s Keyword Planner. The ads, expected to reach global audiences, will be translated into 11 different languages, including Spanish, Urdu, Ukrainian, Hindi and Tamil, Carbert said. The initiative comes about a week after Immigration Minister Marc Miller announced , set to be proposed in the coming weeks. In recent weeks, the governing Liberals, who have long championed Canada as one of the most welcoming countries in the world, have displayed a marked shift in tone on the immigration file. Those searching the web with certain immigration inquiries will be met with sponsored content titled, “Canada’s asylum system - Asylum Facts,” the ministry said. Canada has seen a spike in asylum claims in recent years, according to federal data — from 2019 to 2023, the number of claims filed rose by 125 per cent. As of October, over 260,000 claims are awaiting resolution. The average wait time to process each is currently around 44 months. in November, Immigration Minister Marc Miller said Canada’s asylum and refugee system is not working the way it should due to volume and inefficiency, and that he planned to propose further reforms in an effort to improve efficiency. According to Miller, a “growing” number of claims are not being made at regular ports of entry, but by those already inland. An increasing number of these claims, Miller said, are being filed by people on student visas, hoping to extend their stays. “The growing claims that we see now, inland, are not unexpected,” the minister said. “They’re ones that we saw with people having increasingly fewer hopes to stay in Canada, and being counselled to file, I think unjustly, asylum claims where they shouldn’t have the ability to do so.” In recent weeks, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Ontario Premier Doug Ford have joined Miller in who are exacerbating the challenges faced by Canada’s immigration system by coaching applicants through erroneous or even fraudulent processes. When reached for comment, NDP immigration critic Jenny Kwan said the new measures are an abrupt shift from past policy. “This about face from Prime Minister Trudeau is a shameless and insidious attempt to use newcomers such as migrants, international students, and asylum seekers as political cover,” Kwan said in a statement emailed to the Star. It’s a dangerous game on Trudeau’s part, said Kwan, in trying to “shift the blame for his failures” to asylum seekers — one she called “a recipe to further hype-up hate, resentment and discrimination toward racialized people. “Instead of wasting $250,000 on advertising, they should be investing those resources in processing applications,” said Kwan. Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada has run each year since 2018. In total, the Liberals spent an estimated $250,000 on this year’s project — about a third of the total amount spent ($768,000) on all annual advertising geared toward immigration in the last six years.
