Inside the friendly confines of the Treasure Valley, hype is high and hope is higher around the Fiesta Bowl. Outside of the area, the Boise State football team is seemingly being discounted as it prepares for its College Football Playoff quarterfinal matchup against Penn State on New Year’s Eve. No. 3 Boise State is the team that received a first-round bye, but No. 6 Penn State — tradition-laden member of the Big Ten, a Power 4 conference — is a 10.5-point favorite , the second-largest margin between teams in the quarterfinals. It puts the Broncos, who have built quite a tradition as well, in familiar territory. They opened as 8-point underdogs in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl against mighty Oklahoma; 7-point underdogs in 2010 vs. TCU; and 4-point underdogs in 2014 vs. Arizona. Boise State won all three games. First-year head coach Spencer Danielson said he doesn’t need anyone outside of the campus to believe in his team. “Please, count us out,” Danielson said Monday afternoon. It’s a phrase he’s been using in recent weeks. In addition to being a huge underdog in this game, the Broncos have the longest odds of the eight teams remaining to win the national title. “Please, count us out,” Danielson repeated. “That’s what Boise State football has been built on: people thinking we can’t do something, and we work our tails off to find a way to prove people wrong.” Despite those previous Fiesta Bowl wins, this New Year’s Eve stage probably has the brightest lights the football program at Boise State (12-1) has ever seen. But the Broncos, whose only loss all season was by three points at No. 1 Oregon, are just conducting business as usual. Danielson is giving the team Christmas Eve and Christmas Day off before hitting the ground running on Thursday. The team will travel to Arizona on Saturday afternoon ahead of Tuesday’s game. Nothing about how Boise State prepares for a game will change. Position group meetings will remain the same length, practices will follow the same formula and Danielson said he has no plans to try to “micromanage” anything. “Every game is the most important game, so your process should continue to grow and be elite week to week to week, regardless of the opponent, regardless of where the game is being played,” Danielson said. “And so, no different going into the Fiesta Bowl, quarterfinals of the playoff, I just want to make sure we do our process better than we’ve ever done.” The coach said it will be business as usual during the game as well. Danielson has earned a reputation for going for it on fourth down, for instance. The Broncos are 15-for-21 (71.4%) this season, the 10th-best conversion percentage in the nation. From the incomplete fourth-down pass in the first quarter against Georgia Southern in August to the successful 4th-and-1 rush from junior running back Ashton Jeanty in the Mountain West championship game, Danielson has leaned on a combination of analytics and gut feeling to make some big calls this season. Danielson said the balance of risk vs. reward will not change because of the game’s importance or the team on the other side of the ball. “I go into every game with a game plan for situational football. From timeouts to when to go for it, those are the moves I have to make as a head coach,” Danielson said. “And obviously, as a game goes, plans change, and I’ve got to be aware and very adaptable as we work through those.” Fiesta Bowl, Boise State vs. Penn State When: 5:30 p.m. Mountain time Tuesday, Dec. 31 Where: State Farm Stadium (63,400, natural grass) TV: ESPN Radio: KBOI 670 AM and KBOI 93.1 FM (Bob Behler, Pete Cavender) Records: Boise State 12-1; Penn State 12-2 Series: First meeting Vegas line: Penn State by 10.5 points Weather: Indoors This story was originally published December 23, 2024, 6:38 PM.

Legislation increasing the accessibility of home heating aid and to help identify more seniors who are eligible for the Home Energy Assistance Program — a federal program available to New Yorkers implemented to help low-income homeowners and renters afford costs associated with heating and cooling, was signed by Gov. Kathy Hochul on Monday. Through the legislation, applicants and participants of the Elderly Pharmaceutical Coverage Program will be provided information and instructions for enrollment in HEAP, according to a news release from Hochul's office. "Programs like HEAP help put money back in the pockets of hard-working New Yorkers, helping heat their homes in the dead of winter,” Hochul said. “From raising the minimum wage to our proposed inflation refund checks, we’re doing everything we can to tackle the affordability crisis head-on.” Under the legislation, the Department of Health, which oversees EPIC and its applications, will provide HEAP information and enrollment information with each EPIC application and also through an annual notice to EPIC participants. Barbara C. Guinn, state Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance commissioner, said, “HEAP is a vital lifeline for low-income working families and older adults on a fixed income and also provides financial support to ensure those in emergency situations can keep the heat on and keep their homes warm during the cold winter months.” State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald said, “Governor Hochul understands that having a safe and comfortable home, protected from the elements, is a social determinant of health that is foundational to improved health outcomes. New York sees some of the coldest temperatures during the winter and this important legislation will ensure New York’s most vulnerable senior citizens are safeguarded from the cold without facing the added costs of heating their homes.” On Nov. 12, Hochul announced that additional funding was available for seniors and low- and middle-income households to help lower their heat and energy bills. HEAP can provide up to $996 to eligible households. Applications for the regular HEAP benefit opened Nov. 1 and can be found online at . Seniors who require assistance filling out their HEAP applications can contact their local office for the aging or the NY Connects helpline at 800-342-9871.None

The World Cup winner had not played a Shield match since February 2023 before taking four wickets in a loss to Tasmania this week. The rare appearance was seen as Zampa’s first opportunity to press his case for a Test debut on Australia’s tour of Sri Lanka next year. Know the news with the 7NEWS app: Download today But it was met with criticism from within the NSW cricket fraternity, when the circumstances behind Zampa’s return were less clear. “I can see maybe why they’ve gone down that path ... but you are kind of taking the p*** a little bit (out of) the baggy blue,” long-time NSW star Alyssa Healy said on Willow Talk. Ex-Test star Brad Haddin bluntly said Zampa should not have been playing. “He doesn’t come to training, he’s not part of the NSW system. I just think it sends a real bad message to our younger players in the squad,” he said. “The week previous he came out and said I don’t train with NSW. Part of being in a squad is helping develop everyone around, and he’s a senior player. I think NSW have really let their standards drop there.” Now the apparent demand behind Zampa’s selection has been revealed by Blues selector Stuart Clark. Cricket Australia high-performance boss Ben Oliver claimed Zampa’s return to the NSW side — at the expense of regular spinner Tanveer Sangha — was not influenced by national selectors in the conversations that took place. The Blues disagree. “We didn’t have a discussion because there was no need to — we were told he had to play,” Clark said on ABC radio. “Quite frankly, I don’t understand what the comment of Cricket Australia is because we didn’t need to have a robust debate about his selection. His selection was a foregone conclusion that he was in the team.” The former Test bowler is the second Cricket NSW board member to criticise the Zampa call after former opening batsman turned director Ed Cowan already questioning the call. Clark will now push Cricket NSW chief executive Lee Germon to “clear up” the situation by writing to Cricket Australia. “Because we don’t understand this,” Clark said. “What we were told to do, and what’s coming out in the press, is exactly the opposite. They don’t make sense. “Either we, as selectors, have got it wrong — did we misunderstand? But I’m pretty clear because I’ve got messages that say Adam Zampa must be in the team and there is no point discussing his selection.” Clark, for his part, has no issue with Zampa himself beyond the fact that the spinner is not involved with the squad. Zampa has generally been unavailable for the Sheffield Shield because of his increasing white-ball commitments. “If he wanted to be part of the four-day set-up, then he probably needs to be around and come to training and play a bit of grade cricket and things like that,” Clark said. “He’s a quality bowler and there’s no reason he couldn’t be successful.” It is unclear if Zampa will be picked to play for the Blues against Western Australia from Friday. Speaking before Clark’s remarks, Zampa said he is willing to push himself to see if he can earn a Test debut before he retires from cricket. “It’s something I’d like to do and challenge myself at. If I got to end my career and it didn’t pan out that way then I’d be okay with it,” the 32-year-old said. “I might look back one day and feel like maybe I didn’t give it a 100 per cent crack. “I feel like playing these games and putting my hand up for the Sri Lanka tour and being keen for that is fine. “It’s important if I am on that tour that I have a bit of mileage in my legs and it’s not a huge shock to the system, because Sunday (against Tasmania) was.”
Gus Malzahn is resigning as Central Florida's head coach to become Florida State 's offensive coordinator, a person familiar with the hire told The Associated Press on Saturday. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the Seminoles have not confirmed Malzahn's move, which is pending a state background check. ESPN first reported the decision. The Knights made official that Malzahn is leaving in a statement released a day after UCF (4-8) concluded its season with a 28-14 loss to Utah. “We would like to thank Coach Malzahn for his contributions to our football program over the past four seasons, including our transition into the Big 12 Conference," the school said. "We appreciate his professionalism and dedication to our student-athletes throughout his tenure at UCF and wish he and his wife, Kristi, the very best in their future endeavors.” Malzahn finished with a 28-24 mark in four years at UCF, the last two ending with losing records after joining the Big 12. He coached at Auburn for eight seasons before being fired in 2020. Malzahn replaces offensive coordinator/offensive line coach Alex Atkins, who was fired Nov. 10 following a 52-3 loss at Notre Dame. The Seminoles rank 131st out of 134 in total offense and scoring offense, averaging 15.8 points a game heading into Saturday night's rivalry game against Florida. The Seminoles (2-9) have dropped significantly since going 13-1 last season and winning the Atlantic Coast Conference championship. The Knights, meanwhile, struggled mightily in Malzahn's fourth season — most of it because of quarterback issues. Four players took snaps from center as the Knights finished 2-7 in conference play. It was the program's worst record since going 0-12 in former coach George O’Leary’s final season in 2015. Florida State coach Mike Norvell fired Atkins, defensive coordinator Adam Fuller and receivers coach Ron Dugans amid the Seminoles' season-long skid.
