Bacteria levels tend to increase in water after heavy rainfall, due to a quantity of material collecting in the storm water pipes, grazing land and upstream bodies of water. “The good news is that activities like boating, kayaking, fishing, walking, and picnicking are unaffected,” an online statement read. There’s something about balloons that fascinates almost all of humankind. It is probably a fascination that we are born with, as children seem most drawn to it, even though that charm never fades off completely for many people. There was even a period of public interest in hot air balloons called balloonomania that spanned for decades beginning in 1783. What follows is something that happened in that year that helped spark this mania. You might have heard of the Montgolfier brothers – Joseph-Michel and Jacques Etienne. Aviation pioneers instrumental in the development of hot-air balloons, they came from a family that had made its name manufacturing paper in France for generations. The balloon bug first bit Joseph, who, after building and flying small hot air balloons in 1782, got his brother Jacques on board as well. On June 4, 1783, their balloons were up and about – the first public demonstration of hot-air balloons – in Annonay, France. Faujas’ impatience Barthélemy Faujas de Saint-Fond was a French geologist, volcanologist and traveller of the time, who was also a member of the Academie Royale at the time. Impatient for a balloon demonstration in Paris, Faujas sold tickets for such a balloon flight and handed over the money to Jacques Alexandre-César Charles. Born in 1746, Charles had switched to science after clerking in the finance ministry. He experimented with electricity and also came up with a number of inventions, including a hydrometer and a reflecting goniometer. The Robert brothers Tasked now with the challenge of designing, constructing, and launching a balloon, Charles got to work. Collaborating with the Robert brothers – Nicolas and Anne-Jean – Charles built the first hydrogen balloon. On September 19, they conducted another demonstration, this time from Versailles. They sent the first living creatures – a sheep, a duck, and a rooster – aboard a balloon. The passengers aboard the first hot-air balloon flight were recovered unharmed, with the only injuries sustained being the result of the sheep kicking the rooster! Rozier’s ride to fame A teacher and an experimental aviation pioneer, Jean-François Pilâtre de Rozier rode in a balloon tethered to the ground on October 15. On November 21, he made the first free flight on a hot-air balloon alongside French soldier François Laurent d’Arlandes. Less than two weeks after this success – and less than 100 days after his initial hydrogen balloon launch – Charles conducted another demonstration of his own on December 1, this time from the Jardin des Tuileries. Along with the younger of the Robert brothers, Nicolas, Charles made the first free flight aboard a hydrogen balloon. An estimated 4,00,000 people had gathered to witness this event as Charles and Robert flew skywards. While the wealthy had purchased tickets that gave them access to the inner circular enclosure around the launch site, the guards didn’t have the wherewithal to handle nearly half of the Paris population. People crowded around vantage points that gave them just a glimpse of the show on offer. The flight lasted 2 hours and 5 minutes and the duo landed safely in the village of Nesles-la-Vallée, 35 km northwest of Paris. Following their safe landing, Charles requested Robert to exit the balloon in order to become the first to make a solo flight by reascending. Process of filling gas In addition to being the first hydrogen balloon flight with passengers, this was also one of the first flights to provide meteorological measurements of the atmosphere above the Earth’s surface. While the flight in itself was impressive, the process of filling the balloon with hydrogen gas before take-off was also an incredible feat. This was achieved by pouring concentrated sulphuric acid onto oak barrels filled with iron nails successively. As the iron replaced the hydrogen in the H 2 SO 4 in the barrels, the released hydrogen gas gushed to the surface in a rush. The barrels were arranged in a circle, and the gas was transported by tube to a central vat. Here, it was bubbled through water to ensure that there was no remaining acid, before the gas was piped to the balloon. The exothermic nature of this reaction meant that a lot of heat was released, pushing some of the barrels close to ignition, and making the tubes impossible to touch. With hydrogen gas also being extremely flammable, it was nearly a miracle that the whole episode panned out without incident. Charles’ work with balloons enabled him to notice a relationship between the volume of the gas and the temperature – something that we now know as Charles’s Law. While that does bear his name, the French masses immortalised him in another way: hydrogen balloons are simply called charlières. The strong public interest or fad in balloons and ballooning that began in France late in the 18th Century and extended well into the 19th Century during the advent of balloon flights came to be referred to as balloonomania. An English writer and politician, Horace Walpole coined the term balloonomania. He complained that “all our views are directed to the air; balloons occupy senators, philosophers, ladies, everybody”. The balloons had a huge social impact as spectators in those mass gatherings were beginning to get accustomed to the idea of change and that science and technology could pave the way for future progress. Balloons were literally everywhere. From fashion trends to new product lines, everything featured balloons. This included jewellery, wallpaper, fans, clocks, hats,.. you name it, and you could get it designed with balloon motifs. Through three games, opponents have managed 47.7 points per contest against the Kernels. That ranks third in Class AA, trailing the only other 3-0 teams in the class to date — Sioux Falls Lincoln and Spearfish. Last season, Mitchell allowed 49.2 points per game for the season, which ranked fourth in Class AA. Some of Mitchell’s early success has come with finding a comfortability in switching between man-to-man and zone defenses. This proved to be particularly effective against Stevens. “We left it up to our guys. In every timeout, we asked what they wanted to do (defensively), and they felt confident in the zone,” Kreutzfeldt said after the win over Stevens. “It was about the only thing we felt confident in the whole game, but it came through for us.” Though it should come as no surprise, senior guard Markus Talley appears to be in mid-season form from the jump. In the opener at Watertown, Talley was able to beat his defender off the dribble and get to the basket almost at will. He finished 12 of 16 from the field and dished out six assists. Against Stevens, Kreutzfeldt said that Talley “had to put us on his back,” and later called him “the best player in the class.” Talley scored 26 of the Kernels’ 55 points, including the last five in a three-point victory. Most recently at Central, Mitchell had an uncharacteristically tough time getting anything going inside, so Talley hit six 3-pointers as part of a 28-point effort to keep the offense afloat. Fellow all-state performer Colton Smith came alive in the second half against the Cobblers, scoring 19 points after halftime alone. Even with the exceptional start, Kreutzfeldt believes Talley could provide more going forward. Talks mediated by Qatar and Egypt have stalled since the truce expired on December 1, with Israel escalating its actions and refusing to end its aggression. On November 23, 2023 , Qatar announced that a deal was reached between Israel and Hamas, following numerous rounds of negotiations brokered by Doha and Cairo. The deal, which took effect on November 24 last year, was originally set for four days but was extended twice, ultimately lasting a total of seven days. Throughout the deal’s phases, Hamas released 109 Israelis out of some 240 captured during the surprise October 7 attack—widely known as Al-Aqsa Flood. Under the same deal, Israel released 240 Palestinians from its prisons, predominantly women and children. Israel was quick to resume its genocide on the Gaza Strip the moment the truce expired on the morning of December 1, in what marked only the beginning of its intensified war and escalated regional tensions. By the time of the deal’s expiration, Israel had killed more than 15,000 Palestinians . A year on, the figure has nearly tripled with more than 44,000 killed by Israel—although it is believed to be an undercount with thousands more still missing or trapped under the rubble. State of released prisoners Israel has carried out violations against the Palestinians released under last year’s deal, ranging from targeted killings to re-arresting them. Data obtained by Doha News from Ramallah-based Addameer Prisoner Support and Human Rights Association reveal that Israel has re-arrested 27 of those released since the deal expired. A total of 19 out of those re-arrested remain in detention, including six women and 13 minors. Qassam Iyad Nasrallah, a minor, has also been under house arrest since April 8, with his next court session scheduled for April 9, 2025. Two Palestinians are still under trial despite their release, including Fadwa Hamada and 17-year-old Nufouz Hammad, Addameer told Doha News. Hammad was first detained in 2021 from her school in occupied East Jerusalem at the age of 14 after being accused of stabbing an Israeli settler. In August, Israeli forces killed three of the minors released, including Tareq Dawood, Wael Musha, and Jibreel Ghassan Jibreel. Prolonged stalemate and assassinations The talks mediated by Qatar and Egypt have witnessed a prolonged stalemate since the truce expired on December 1, with Israel only carrying out more escalatory moves as it refuses to end its aggression. Its backer and main ally, the United States, has also blocked four out of 14 ceasefire resolutions at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). In an effort to revive negotiations, a meeting between the relevant parties took place in Poland in December, which saw a proposal for a “humanitarian pause” was discussed. This would involve the release of Israeli captives from Gaza in exchange for the release of Palestinians held in Israeli prisons. However, the talks ended without a breakthrough as Israel escalated its attacks on the Gaza Strip. The same month saw Egypt present a three-phased deal that had involved a month-long pause in exchange for the release of at least 40 captives and Palestinians from Israeli prisons. The proposal, which Israel rejected, also included the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip and eventually an end to the war. In a major escalation on January 2 , Israel killed senior Hamas official Saleh Al-Arouri in a drone strike on Beirut’s southern suburb of Dahiyeh. This marked the first Israeli attack on the Lebanese capital since the 2006 war. Hopes for a deal resurfaced again between late January and early February following talks in Paris, after Doha and Washington confirmed receiving a response from Hamas on a deal. Hamas’s reply outlined a three-stage plan, each lasting 45 days: releasing all Israeli captives and the bodies of those who died in Gaza, lifting the Gaza blockade, and reconstructing the territory. Netanyahu rejected the proposal yet again as the U.S. used its veto power for a third time to block a UNSC ceasefire resolution on February 20 . In April, Israel killed the children and grandchildren of former Hamas leader Haniyeh, but he insisted on continuing negotiations until a ceasefire was reached. Days later , Hamas presented mediators with a new three-phase proposal, each lasting 42 days, to pave the way for a ceasefire. On May 6, Hamas accepted a ceasefire proposed by Qatar and Egypt, but Israel rejected it and proceeded with its invasion of the Rafah Crossing. In June, U.S. President Joe Biden proposed a new plan that included the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, the release of Israeli captives in exchange for Palestinian prisoners, and the entry of humanitarian aid into the enclave. Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad expressed their willingness to negotiate for an agreement. Qatar suspends mediating role Talks have continued to stall until Israel obstructed all efforts by assassinating Haniyeh in Tehran on July 31 , fueling escalations with Iran. The following month, Hamas then reiterated its demand that Israel commit to what was agreed upon in the July 2 proposal, which was based on a framework deal presented by Biden and supported by the UNSC. However, Israel further increased regional tensions by bombarding Lebanon’s capital and assassinating Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah on September 27. This prompted Iran to retaliate by launching a barrage of missiles on lands occupied by Israel. Israel then killed Haniyeh’s successor, Yahya Sinwar, on October 16 in Rafah, southern Gaza. The talks resumed in Doha by October 27, but ended without breakthrough as Israel intensified its brutal aggression on the Gaza Strip and Lebanon. Weeks without progress, Qatar announced on November 10 that its mediation stalled until both sides show a willingness to negotiate. Hamas leaders are also not present in the Gulf state, which has hosted the movement since 2012 at Washington’s request for mediation purposes. Pat Bryant dashed in to score off Luke Altmyer’s 43-yard pass early in the third quarter as Illinois (9-3, 6-3 Big Ten) struck for touchdowns just over 4 minutes apart early in the third quarter to open a 28-10 lead in what had been a tight game. Bryant's 10th receiving touchdown tied a school record. Altmyer, who threw for 170 yards, had a TD himself on a keeper from the 1-yard line early in the second quarter. David Olano added a field goal in the fourth to cap Illinois' scoring. Laughery, a sophomore running back, rushed for a career-best 172 yards and topped 100 for the first time. He entered with only one TD this season and two for his career. He had a career-long 64-yard run for a score early in the second half. Coach Bret Bielema said he wasn't surprised by Laughery's explosive performance as the Gibson City, Illinois product rounded back into form after being hampered by a hamstring injury earlier this season. “I thought today would be a day that could happen,” Bielema said. “Today some of those turned into big home run hits we've kind of been waiting on all year.” Laughery said he's been prepping for this kind of game, when he carried the ball 12 times for an average of 14.3 yards. “Finally, the opportunity was there,” said Laughery, who got the game ball. “You know you gotta' hit one and it came together today.” He credited the Illini offensive line with opening space for his breakout performance. “Those guys were covering them (Northwestern's defense) all day long,” Laughery said. “It was awesome running behind the looks we were getting” Northwestern’s Devin Turner intercepted Altmyer twice, including for a 13-yard touchdown return late in the first quarter. But Luke Akers kicked his second field goal of the game, a 34-yarder, with 5:35 left in the third quarter to cut it to 28-13. Lausch led the Wildcats on their next possession and finished it with an 11-yard touchdown toss to A.J. Henning to narrow the Illini lead to 28-20. Then Mac Resetich intercepted Lausch’s pass 50 seconds into the fourth quarter. Laughery powered up the middle for 31 yards and his third TD about two minutes later to quell the Wildcats' momentum. Northwestern dominated in possession time — 34:32 to 25:28 —and plays — 90 to 53. The margin was even more pronounced in the first half, but the Wildcats settled for a 13-yard touchdown return on Turner’s second pick of the game with 2:14 left in the first quarter and Akers’ 21-yard field goal that opened the scoring 6:29 in. Illinois led 14-10 at the half on Laughery’s 30-yard TD run midway through the first quarter and Altmyer’s keeper 1:39 into the second. Akers missed wide to the right on a 44-yard attempt as time ran out in the half. Both teams’ leading pass receivers were injured. Northwestern’s Bryce Kirtz was knocked out of the game in the first quarter with a lower-body injury after two receptions that upped his total yards to 598. Illinois’ Bryant went to the locker room with about 5 minutes left in the first half after Turner collided with him as he plucked his second interception.
