2025 with Binary Code. 3D Render As each year passes, the complexities of cybersecurity and the more sophisticated threats grow. While several threat trends and cybersecurity priorities persist each year, some new factors impacting the digital ecosystem should be considered in the next year. I chose to select a couple of tech trends that certainly will be impacting cybersecurity in 2025: artificial intelligence and quantum computing. I also address one persistent omnipresent cyberthreat: phishing. And to provide practical recommendations, I have included a short cybersecurity readiness checklist and recommendations for businesses for the coming year. Digital background depicting innovative technologies in (AI) artificial systems, neural interfaces ... [+] and internet machine learning technologies Artificial Intelligence: A Growing Driver for Cybersecurity for 2025 The application of artificial intelligence is a significant driver of cybersecurity. It was the cybersecurity theme for 2024 and will expand into 2025. Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) become essential tools or innovative chess pieces in a cybersecurity strategy game when it comes to adapting to new highly sophisticated digital surroundings. When it comes to surviving and thriving, it will be dependent on the accuracy, speed, and quality of the algorithms and accompanying technology. To succeed in a complex game, we must be diligent, creative, and consistently stay ahead of the competition. Artificial intelligence and machine learning have the potential to become new paradigms for automation in the field of cybersecurity. The ability to draw statistical conclusions and use predictive analytics to reduce hazards with fewer resources is made possible by them. Google’s Gmail Upgrade—Why You Need A New Email Address In 2025 Urgent New Gmail Security Warning For Billions As Attacks Continue FinCEN Extends Beneficial Ownership Information (BOI) Reporting Deadline Speech recognition, learning and planning, and problem solving are some of the fundamental tasks that computers equipped with artificial intelligence and machine learning are supposed to perform. In the area of cybersecurity, artificial intelligence and machine learning can offer a more expedient method of recognizing new assaults, drawing statistical inferences, and transmitting this information to endpoint security systems. This is of utmost significance because there is a significant lack of well-trained cybersecurity professionals, and the attack surface is increasingly expanding. AI and ML can be useful for cyber defense. The tools can be used to improve cyber defense capabilities and quickly detect threat abnormalities. On the other hand, threat actors can also utilize these tools. And criminal hackers and adversarial states are already employing AI and MI as instruments to identify and take advantage of flaws in threat detection frameworks. With the use of automated reconnaissance techniques, attackers can gather detailed information on a target's personnel, systems, and defenses at a speed and scale never before possible. They employ a number of techniques to accomplish this. Their favorite methods are frequently automated human-like phishing attempts and malware that may change itself to trick or even compromise cyber-defense programs and systems. The most vulnerable targets are small businesses, organizations, and particularly healthcare facilities that cannot afford to make large expenditures in defensive developing cybersecurity technology like artificial intelligence. Hacker extortion via ransomware and cryptocurrency demands could become a more persistent and dynamic danger. Quantum computer core futuristic technology digital layer dimension holographic process and analysis ... [+] for big data and abstract orange zone polygon background Entering The Quantum Doorway in 2025 The age of quantum computing is currently upon humanity. Quantum computing promises to solve problems by allowing previously unheard-of processing speeds and predictive analytics. Real-time analytics and cybersecurity are just two of the fields that quantum technology is predicted to revolutionize. In order to accomplish this, it uses the unique properties of subatomic particles to process data inputs. The research firm Gartner succinctly describes quantum computing as: “[T]the use of atomic quantum states to effect computation. Data is held in qubits (quantum bits), which could hold all possible states simultaneously. Data held in qubits is affected by data held in other qubits, even when physically separated. This effect is known as entanglement.” In a simplified description, quantum computers use quantum bits or qubits instead of using binary traditional bits of ones and zeros for digital communications. Robert Liscouski, Chairman of the Board of Quantum Computing Inc. (www.quantumcomputinginc.com), believes that we will see practical applications of quantum computing this year and beyond. He is confident that the state of the technology is at a point today where end users—business users, medical researchers, and cybersecurity professionals—will change the conversation from “What can quantum computing do” to “Look what I can achieve with quantum computing.” However, as is the case with many technological tools, there are two sides. Given their speed and accuracy advantages over classical computers, quantum computers have the potential to pose geopolitical cyberthreats if misused. Cybersecurity can potentially be compromised by the same computational capacity that enables the solution of complex issues. Current cybersecurity measures typically use pseudo-random numbers to encrypt sensitive data, such as passwords and personal information. However, any business that uses regular encryption tools faces a major risk. This is because quantum computers can defeat the encryption methods that traditional computers employ. Quantum computing is arriving sooner than we planned and we must prepare for the exponential advantages and threats of quantum technology due to its potentially disruptive nature. Governments, academia, and many technology leaders in industry, are all now investing with heightened intensity in research & development and are contributing to the quest to develop functional quantum computing. The year 2025 will still be a time of quantum discoveries. However, there is no denying that a new quantum era is on the horizon. Cyber Security Ransomware Email Phishing Encrypted Technology, Digital Information Protected Secured Addressing Persistent Annual Cyber Threats Every year, Phishing (with Ransomware) is at the Top of the cyberthreat List Every year, phishing heads the list of cyberthreats. Why? Because it is easy to do, and hackers are able to profit from it. Social media is frequently used by criminal hacking groups and scammers to plan their malware and phishing attacks. They may customize their attacks by gathering a lot of information from social media posts, including birthdates and personal histories. Advances in technology have rendered phishing more accessible to cybercriminals. They have easy access to digital images and social engineering data, and a vast array of phishing tools at their disposal, some of which are automated by machine learning. Hackers often combine spearphishing, a technique they use to target executives at companies or organizations, with ransomware. Artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms have made social engineering operations much more complex by making it easier to find weaknesses and automate large-scale ransomware and phishing campaigns. When hackers are successful in stealing identities, they frequently sell or distribute them to other criminals on the dark web. The second half of 2024 saw a 202% increase in total phishing messages, according to cybersecurity experts, who also noted a sharp rise in phishing attacks. In the same period, there was a significant 703% increase in credential phishing attacks, according to SlashNext's 2024 Phishing Intelligence Report. “Key findings from the study reveal that users encounter an average of one advanced phishing attack per mailbox every week. Mobile users face up to 600 threats annually, underscoring a shift away from email-only phishing to multichannel approaches.” Phishing Attacks Double in 2024 - Infosecurity Magazine Ransomware attacks often accompany phishing attacks. Automated and enabled by AI, criminal hackers will continue to extort victims at a startling rate in 2025. Soft targets for ransomware extortion are common among hackers, particularly in the manufacturing, finance, and healthcare sectors. Given that many networks still have open vulnerabilities that hackers can exploit and that many of the affected firms are still paying ransomware, we should anticipate further attacks of this nature. So, what should be the priorities for 2025?! Cybersecurity Recommendations for Business in 2025 1) The practice of cybersecurity is fundamentally about risk management. Employee education, gap analysis, vulnerability assessment, threat mitigation, and having up-to-date resilience plans to react to incidents are all part of this watchful approach. 2) Cyber-hygiene is also a business imperative. Elements of basic cyber hygiene include multifactor authentication (MFA) to limit the possibility of unauthorized access. Strong passwords that are not easily guessed and/or a password manager. Identity and access management (“IAM”) ensures that only the right people and job roles in your organization can access the tools they need to do their jobs. 3) The foundation of cybersecurity is effective communication. The CISO, CTO, CIO, and top management must coordinate their efforts, work together, and evaluate their information security policies, procedures, and network security on a regular basis. By exchanging intelligence about dangers and innovative security advances, communication makes preparedness possible. 4) Expertise is needed in cybersecurity. A corporate board should ideally have a mix of subject matter specialists from inside and outside the company. Executive management can always benefit from hearing opinions and suggestions from outside specialists. Wishing all happy holidays and Cyber-safe 2025!
Israel Implements Ceasefire Deal as GOP Criticizes White House Weapons Delays Share This article JERUSALEM, Israel – After nearly 14 months of war, Israel agreed to and implemented a ceasefire deal with the Iranian-backed terror group Hezbollah. The agreement comes after intense pressure from the Biden administration. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu gave three reasons why he agreed to the ceasefire in an address to the nation on Tuesday night. He declared, "The first reason is to focus on the Iranian threat, and I will not expand on that. The second reason is to give our forces a breather and to replenish stocks. And I say it openly, it is no secret that there have been big delays in weapons and munitions deliveries." Netanyahu added, "These delays will be resolved soon. We will receive supplies of advanced weaponry that will keep our soldiers safe and give us more strike force to complete our mission. And the third reason for having a cease-fire is to separate the fronts and isolate Hamas." Many observers believe those major delays in the delivery of advanced weapons and munitions from the White House put the Israel Defense Forces at risk, creating an obstacle to the IDF completing its mission in Lebanon. While giving his three primary reasons for the ceasefire agreement, Netanyahu also made clear it allows Israel to strike Hezbollah if necessary. "If Hezbollah violates the agreement and tries to arm itself, we will attack. If it tries to renew terrorist infrastructure near the border, we will attack." Just hours after the ceasefire, the first violation was reported on Wednesday morning. According to Israel's Arutz Sheva, IDF troops fired warning shots at Hezbollah terrorists approaching the Lebanese border town of Kfarkela near Metula in Israel. Metula Council leader David Azoulay stated, "Nothing at all has changed since October 7." On Pennsylvania Avenue, President Joe Biden announced that the U.S. is invested in the agreement's success. "We're determined this conflict will not be just another cycle of violence," Biden said. "And so, the United States, with the full support of France and our other allies, has pledged to work with Israel and Lebanon to ensure that this arrangement is fully implemented, the agreement totally implemented." On Capitol Hill, Republicans criticized the ceasefire deal. House Speaker Mike Johnson wrote on X, "While the Biden-Harris Administration celebrates this announcement, remember that it is STILL withholding weapons to Israel. This Administration put up roadblock after roadblock on Israel and dragged out this conflict. They repeatedly appeased Iran rather than show unequivocal support to our closest ally in the region. Israel's military success has been in spite of the White House, not because of it." Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) issued a statement that read, in part, "Obama-Biden officials pressured our Israeli allies into accepting the ceasefire by withholding weapons they needed to defend themselves and counter Hezbollah, and by threatening to facilitate a further, broader, binding international arms embargo through the United Nations." In Tehran, Iran's Foreign Ministry welcomed what it called "the end of the Israeli aggression." In southern Lebanon, some Hezbollah members have already returned to their villages near the Israeli border. ***Please sign up for CBN Newsletters and download the free CBN News app to ensure you receive the latest updates and alerts.*** Share This article About The AuthorBALTIMORE — The bright lights of drone-like objects lighting up the night sky have been spotted in Maryland, prompting lawmakers, federal agencies and even a former governor to search for answers. “I am aware of reports of numerous apparent drone sightings over the Delmarva Peninsula and in Salisbury, Maryland, in my district,” Maryland Republican Congressman Andy Harris told The Baltimore Sun on Saturday. “We need transparency now from the White House to find out if these drones are a threat to our national security, and if they are, we need to take proper corrective action immediately.” This increased activity first made national headlines in New Jersey , and now widespread questions have been raised about the origin of the drones, which also have been spotted in Pennsylvania and New York. Federal officials have not ruled out that some of the objects could be airplanes or helicopters. However, the drones do not appear to be a threat to national security — for the time being. “We have no evidence at this time that the reported drone sightings pose a national security or public safety threat or have a foreign nexus,” the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI said in a joint statement. “The FBI, DHS and our federal partners, in close coordination with the New Jersey State Police, continue to deploy personnel and technology to investigate this situation and confirm whether the reported drone flights are actually drones or are instead manned aircraft or otherwise inaccurate sightings.” Precautions are being taken. On Saturday, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maryland announced a temporary flight restriction in place for the annual Army-Navy game at Northwest Stadium in Landover. The area was considered a “No Drone Zone” for a 2-nautical-mile radius around the stadium and up to 2,000 feet above ground level. Former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan expressed his concerns about the drone activity on social media after claiming he spotted an object in the sky around 9:45 p.m. Thursday near his Davidsonville home. He sees this phenomenon as a growing problem in Maryland and throughout the U.S. “Like many who have observed these drones, I do not know if this increasing activity over our skies is a threat to public safety or national security,” Hogan wrote on X. “But the public is growing increasingly concerned and frustrated with the complete lack of transparency and the dismissive attitude of the federal government. The government has the ability to track these from their point of origin but has mounted a negligent response. People are rightfully clamoring for answers, but aren’t getting any.” Other drone sightings have been reported in the Woodberry neighborhood of Baltimore and Prince Frederick in Calvert County. The drone activity is also a concern among industry experts. Eric Brown, founder and CEO of Imperio Consulting, spent 24 years in the Special Forces as a Green Beret and has seen firsthand the evolution of drone technology. If drones are appearing in areas where they shouldn’t, especially near critical infrastructure, it’s a signal that someone is gathering information or testing boundaries. This would naturally be a concern for any government agency tasked with ensuring public safety and national security, according to Brown. “The potential risks depend on how the drones are used. In combat, drones were essential for gathering intelligence and ensuring mission success, but that same technology could be used for surveillance of sensitive locations,” Brown told The Baltimore Sun. “Drones can also deliver payloads, as we utilized them to carry ordnance in certain missions. While such use requires precision and authorization in military contexts, the potential for misuse in civilian settings — accidentally or intentionally — is significant.” Yashin Manraj, CEO of Pvotal Technologies, said the surge in national interest and curiosity has attracted many copycats who are now flying their FAA-compliant drones to “troll” the media. The most effective way would be to identify the drone handlers and penalize them in a public setting to inform and quell the fears related to this activity, he said. “We hope that lawmakers take a nuanced approach and balance the hysteria with a concerted effort to empower the U.S. technological hegemony to extend to drones rather than letting other countries get ahead while we curtail our growth and progress for political reasons,” Manraj said. Melissa Swisher, the chief revenue officer at SkySafe, said rising drone activity is a serious concern for both local and federal governments due to the increasing risks posed to public safety and critical infrastructure. Unauthorized drones can disrupt operations at airports, power plants, water treatment facilities and even military bases. These incidents not only endanger lives but can also lead to significant economic and operational disruptions. Governments are under pressure to address these threats while managing the growing adoption of drones in legitimate industries, she said. “The dangers of drones are wide-ranging. Unauthorized drones can be used for espionage, and weaponized to damage power grids, disrupt airspace, endanger aircraft, jeopardize public events, smuggle contraband into secure facilities, and deliver harmful payloads,” Swisher told The Baltimore Sun. “They also pose a surveillance risk, potentially violating individual privacy and compromising sensitive operations or infrastructure.” Hogan has demanded answers. The mystery of these objects has created unease among residents. “We are being told that neither the White House, the military, the FBI, nor Homeland Security have any idea what they are, where they came from, or who has launched or is controlling them — and that they pose no threat,” Hogan wrote on X. “That response is entirely unacceptable. I join with the growing bipartisan chorus of leaders demanding that the federal government immediately address this issue. The American people deserve answers and action now.” ©2024 Baltimore Sun. (AP) — The game had suddenly gone sideways for the Minnesota Vikings, their 11-point lead on the Chicago Bears having evaporated in the closing seconds. They straightened it out in overtime, no sweat, because Sam Darnold simply hasn’t been fazed. Save for his occasional rash of turnovers, in games the Vikings still managed to win, Darnold proved again on Sunday in defeating the Bears that he’s directing a passing attack with the potential to be one of the NFL ‘s most potent. “I think he’s a mentally tough guy. I think he’s a physically tough guy. I think he’s confident in the guys around him, and I think he’s confident in our system,” coach Kevin O’Connell said after the 30-27 victory. “I think when he just continues to play quarterback at a high level, I think we’re a tough team.” After the defense forced the Bears to punt on the opening possession of overtime, Darnold led the Vikings on a 68-yard drive to set up the game-ending field goal while overcoming a 7-yard sack on the first play and two subsequent setbacks with a false start and a holding penalty. On third-and-10 from the 21, he hit Jordan Addison near the sideline for 13 yards. On first-and-15 from the 29, Darnold threaded a throw to Justin Jefferson for 20 yards after he’d muscled his way through Bears cornerback Jaylon Johnson on a post route for the clutch catch after he’d been all but silenced all afternoon by a defense determined to constantly bracket him with double coverage. On second-and-11 from the 48, Darnold connected with a wide-open T.J. Hockenson underneath for 12 yards. Then two plays later off a second-and-8 play-action fake, he found Hockenson again on a deep corner route for 29 yards to put Parker Romo in prime position for the walk-off winner. “Just execute. It’s as simple as that. Just one play at a time,” said Darnold, who went 22 for 34 for 330 yards and two touchdowns without a turnover. “I think I tell the guys that every single time in the huddle, but that’s my mindset every single time I’m out there on the field, especially in that situation.” Even when Jefferson continues to draw an extraordinary amount of coverage, the Vikings with Addison, Hockenson, Aaron Jones and the rest of their crew running O’Connell’s system have proven they have an offense that can go win a game when it’s required. That wouldn’t be possible without Darnold, whose career rebirth has helped spark the Vikings (9-2) become one of the league’s biggest surprises in what’s now its most difficult division. “He’s cool, calm, collected,” Hockenson said. “That’s what you want as the leader of the huddle.” What’s working The Vikings’ defense ranks ninth in the league on third downs, allowing a conversion rate of 34.5% after limiting the Bears to a 6-for-17 performance. The Vikings are tied for first on fourth downs with an allowance of 36.4% after the Bears went 2 for 3. Both conversions came in the fourth quarter during touchdown drives. The Vikings also rank fourth in the NFL in opponent points per drive (1.52). What needs help The Vikings had seven possessions that crossed the 20-yard line in Chicago, but only three of them yielded touchdowns. Their lone turnover was the type of game-altering giveaways they’ve struggled to eliminate this month, a fumble by Aaron Jones at the 1-yard line that ruined a promising first drive. The Vikings are tied for 20th in the league in red zone touchdown rate (53.9%) and are 17th in goal-to-go touchdowns (72%). Stock up Addison had eight catches for 162 yards, both career highs, and a touchdown on nine throws from Darnold. The second-year wide receiver has had a quieter season than his rookie year, but he stepped up in a significant way on an afternoon when Jefferson was as smothered by the opposing secondary as ever. Stock down TE Johnny Mundt had the onside kick glance off his shin as he charged toward the coverage, and the first kicking team recovery in the NFL this season helped the Bears extend the game. Mundt also had the false start on the overtime drive. His lone catch was a 7-yard gain when he was stopped short of the goal line, one play before the lost fumble. Mundt played 33 of 71 snaps and Hockenson took 48 snaps with Oliver out. Injuries The Vikings lost LT Cam Robinson (foot) and LB Ivan Pace (hamstring) to injuries in the first quarter against the Bears, and O’Connell said on Monday those players were still in “evaluation mode.” Oliver (ankle) will have an opportunity to return after being sidelined last week. The latest Liverpool news as Salah's representative has given a few updates on social media amid speculation over the forward's future. Mo Salah’s future at Liverpool has been a point of conversation for the past few months, with the talk intensifying over the last few days following the player’s comments over his future. Salah , along with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk is out of contract at Liverpool in the summer. It means that they could all potentially walk away from the club for nothing if they don’t agree new deals. They will also be talk to overseas clubs over a potential move when the January transfer window opens. Liverpool do remain in talks with Salah’s agent, Remy Abbas over an extension, but a deal is yet to be reached. Speaking about his future after the 3-2 win over Southampton , Salah said: "Well, we are almost in December and I haven't received any offers yet to stay in the club, [so] I'm probably more out than in. "You know I have been in the club for many years. There is no club like this. But in the end it is not in my hands. As I said before, it is December and I haven't received anything yet about my future. "I love the fans. The fans love me. In the end it is not in my hands or the fans' hands. Let's wait and see. Of course [no offer is disappointing], yeah." It’s not only Salah that has spoken about his future. Abbas has also given updates on his own social media channel, here is a roundup of his most recent statements. Speaking back in March last year, he shot down suggestions that Salah was considering leaving the club to move to Spain. "Where did you get this from if not even Mohamed and I discussed this?" He wrote on X (formerly Twitter ). "Please tell us." He also took to social media in August, during the transfer window, with a clear message. "If we considered leaving LFC this year, we wouldn’t have renewed the contract last summer. Mohamed remains committed to LFC," he wrote. Taking to social media again, he hit out at reports surrounding Salah’s future. "FYI - all those ‘journalists’ who imply having ‘inside information’ about Mohamed’s future are making claims/posts based on absolutely nothing," he wrote. "Just click-whoring. 'Sources close to Mohamed' don’t exist. This post is really just to tell you that they don’t know." Quoting a post from the official Premier League account at the start of the month, which highlighted no player has had more goal involvements in the top flight this season, Salah was described by his representative as the "Best player in the world". It was the first time in two months that the representative had taken to social media to make a direct reference about Salah.

NKGen Biotech Receives Notifications From Nasdaq Related to Delayed Quarterly Report and ...SHAREHOLDER ALERT: Pomerantz Law Firm Investigates Claims On Behalf of Investors of Arvinas, Inc. - ARVNBETHLEHEM, West Bank (AP) — Bethlehem marked another somber Christmas Eve on Tuesday in the traditional birthplace of Jesus under the shadow of war in Gaza . The excitement and cheer that typically descends on the West Bank during Christmas week were nowhere to be found. The festive lights and giant tree that normally decorate Manger Square were missing, as were the throngs of foreign tourists that usually fill the square. Palestinian scouts marched silently through the streets, a departure from their usual raucous brass marching band. Security forces arranged barriers near the Church of the Nativity, built atop the spot where Jesus is believed to have been born. The cancellation of Christmas festivities is a severe blow to the town's economy. Tourism accounts for an estimated 70% of Bethlehem’s income — almost all from the Christmas season. Salman said unemployment is hovering around 50% — higher than the 30% unemployment across the rest of the West Bank, according to the Palestinian Finance Ministry. Latin Patriarch Pierbattista Pizzaballa, the top Roman Catholic cleric in the Holy Land, noted the shuttered shops and empty streets and expressed hope that next year would be better. “This has to be the last Christmas that is so sad,” he told hundreds of people gathered in Manger Square, where normally tens of thousands would congregate. Pizzaballa held a special pre-Christmas Mass in the Church of the Holy Family in Gaza City. Several Palestinian Christians told the Associated Press that they have been displaced in the church since the war began in October of last year with barely enough food and water. “We hope by next year at the same day we’d be able to celebrate Christmas at our homes and go to Bethlehem,” said Najla Tarazi, a displaced woman. “We hope to celebrate in Jerusalem ... and for the war to end. This is the most important thing for us and the most important demand we have these days because the situation is really hard. We don’t feel happy.” Bethlehem is an important center in the history of Christianity, but Christians make up only a small percentage of the roughly 14 million people spread across the Holy Land. There are about 182,000 in Israel, 50,000 in the West Bank and Jerusalem and 1,300 in Gaza, according to the U.S. State Department. The number of visitors to the town plunged from a pre-COVID high of around 2 million per year in 2019 to fewer than 100,000 in 2024, said Jiries Qumsiyeh, the spokesperson for the Palestinian Tourism Ministry. After nightfall, the golden walls of the Church of the Nativity were illuminated as a few dozen people quietly milled about. A young boy stood holding a pile of balloons for sale, but gave up because there were no customers to buy them. The war in Gaza has deterred tourists and has prompted a surge of violence in the West Bank , with more than 800 Palestinians killed by Israeli fire and dozens of Israelis killed in militant attacks. Palestinian officials do not provide a breakdown of how many of the deceased are civilians and how many are fighters. Since the deadly Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas attack that sparked the war , access to and from Bethlehem and other towns in the West Bank has been difficult, with long lines of motorists waiting to pass through Israeli military checkpoints. The restrictions have prevented some 150,000 Palestinians from leaving the territory to work in Israel, causing the economy there to contract by 25%. In the Oct. 7 assault on southern Israel, Hamas-led militants killed about 1,200 people, most of them civilians, and took more than 250 Israeli hostages. Israeli officials believe that around 100 hostages remain in captivity in the Gaza Strip. Elsewhere, Christmas celebrations were also subdued. Scores of Syrian Christians protested Tuesday in Damascus, demanding protection after the burning of a Christmas tree in Hama the day before. Videos and images shared on social media showed the large, decorated tree burning at a roundabout in Suqalabiyah, a town in the Hama countryside. It remains unclear who was responsible for setting the tree on fire. In a video that circulated on social media, a representative of Syria’s new leadership, Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham, could be seen visiting the site and addressing the community. He said: “This act was committed by people who are not Syrian, and they will be punished beyond your expectations.” German celebrations were darkened by a car attack on a Christmas market on Friday that left five people dead and 200 people injured. President Frank-Walter Steinmeier rewrote his annual recorded Christmas Day speech to address the attack. He plans to acknowledge that “there is grief, pain, horror and incomprehension over what took place in Magdeburg,” while urging Germans to “stand together,” according to an early copy of the speech. A snowstorm in the Balkans stranded drivers and downed power lines, but some saw the beauty in it. “I’m actually glad its falling, especially because of Christmas,” said Mirsad Jasarevic in Zenica, Bosnia. “We did not have snow for Christmas for 17 years here, and now is the time for wonderful white Christmas.” American Airlines briefly grounded flights across the U.S. on Tuesday due to a technical problem just as the Christmas travel season kicked into overdrive. Winter weather threatened more potential problems for those planning to fly or drive. Meanwhile, the flight-tracking site FlightAware reported that 1,447 flights entering or leaving the U.S., or serving domestic destinations, were delayed Tuesday, with 28 flights canceled. In the port of Barcelona, Spain, volunteers from the faith-based ministry Stella Maris visited seven ships docked there on Christmas Eve to deliver Nativity scenes and the local specialty of turrón (nougat candy) to seafarers. The volunteers met seafarers from India, the Philippines, Turkey and elsewhere, said Ricard Rodríguez-Martos, a Catholic deacon and former merchant marine captain who leads Stella Maris in this major Mediterranean harbor. Associated Press writers Wafaa Shurafa in Deir al Balah, Gaza Strip, Melanie Lidman in Tel Aviv, Hannah Schoenbaum in Salt Lake City and Giovanna Dell’Orto in Minneapolis contributed to this report.
OpenAI is allowing employees to sell roughly $1.5 billion worth of shares in a new tender offer to SoftBank, CNBC has learned. SoftBank's latest investment adds to OpenAI's recent $6.6 billion funding round at a $157 billion valuation. The deal was spurred by SoftBank billionaire founder and CEO Masayoshi Son, who was persistent in asking for a larger stake in the company, a person familiar with the matter said. OpenAI is allowing employees to sell roughly $1.5 billion worth of shares in a new tender offer to SoftBank, CNBC has learned. 24/7 San Diego news stream: Watch NBC 7 free wherever you are The new financing will allow the Japanese tech conglomerate to get an even larger slice of the AI startup, and it will allow current and former OpenAI employees to cash out their shares, two people familiar with the matter told CNBC. Employees will have until Dec. 24 to decide if they want to participate in the new tender offer, which has not previously been reported, one of the people said. The deal was spurred by SoftBank billionaire founder and CEO Masayoshi Son, who was persistent in asking for a larger stake in the startup after putting $500 million into OpenAI's last funding round, one of the people said. The tender offer is not related to OpenAI's potential plans to restructure the firm to a for-profit business , one of the people said. OpenAI and SoftBank declined to comment. The news underscores Son's interest in the AI space and in backing the most valuable private players. SoftBank was an early investor in Arm, and Son said at a recent conference that he's saving "tens of billions of dollars" to make the "next big move" in artificial intelligence. He had previously invested in Apple, Qualcomm and Alibaba. Money Report Samsung Electronics appoints co-CEO in leadership shuffle focused on chip divisions; shares drop Donald Trump selects Kevin Hassett to lead National Economic Council SoftBank's Vision Fund 2 recently invested in AI startups Glean, Perplexity and Poolside. SoftBank has about 470 portfolio companies and $160 billion in assets across its two vision funds. The OpenAI investment matches SoftBank's eagerness to deploy cash, with a capital-intensive business model, a person close to Son told CNBC. Even without SoftBank's deep pockets, OpenAI has had no trouble raising billions in cash. Its valuation has climbed to $157 billion in the two years since launching ChatGPT. OpenAI has raised roughly $13 billion from Microsoft , and it closed its latest $6.6 billion round in October , led by Thrive Capital and including participation from chipmaker Nvidia , SoftBank and others. The company also received a $4 billion revolving line of credit , bringing its total liquidity to more than $10 billion. OpenAI expects about $5 billion in losses on $3.7 billion in revenue this year, CNBC confirmed in September with a person familiar with the situation. The tender offer will be open to current and former employees who had been granted restricted stock units at least two years ago and have held the shares for at least that long, one of the people said. The unit price of $210 will align with the company's most recent funding round. Tender offers have become crucial for tech employees amid a dormant IPO market and skyrocketing company valuations. Private companies rely on such deals to keep employees happy and reduce the pressure to list on public markets. Since OpenAI has no initial public offering immediately on the horizon and a price tag that makes the company prohibitively expensive for would-be acquirers, secondary stock sales are the only way in the near future for shareholders to pocket a portion of their paper wealth. Databricks is another private company raising money to allow employees to cash out and avoid public markets pressure, CNBC reported this week. OpenAI took a more restrictive approach to tender offers in the past, with rules allowing the company to determine who gets to participate in stock sales, CNBC reported in June . Current and former OpenAI employees previously told CNBC that there was growing concern about access to liquidity after reports that the company had the power to claw back vested equity. But the company reversed its policies toward secondary share sales this summer, and it now allows current and former employees to participate equally in annual tender offers. The company expects to allow more of these secondary sales, and it will need to tap private markets again in the future based on demand from investors and the capital-intensive nature of the business, according to a person familiar with this week's tender offer. OpenAI has faced increasing competition from startups like Anthropic and tech giants like Google. The generative AI market is predicted to top $1 trillion in revenue within a decade, and business spending on generative AI surged 500% this year , according to recent data from Menlo Ventures. The S&P 500 rose 1.1 percent Tuesday for its third-straight gain. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.9 percent, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq composite climbed 1.3 percent. While "Big Tech" companies, including Apple, Amazon and chip company Broadcom, helped push the market higher, the gains were widespread. Advancers outnumbered decliners by more than 3-to-1 on the New York Stock Exchange. Broadcom rose 3.2 percent, Apple gained 1.1 percent and Amazon closed 1.8 percent higher. Super Micro Computer climbed 6 percent. Tesla jumped 7.4 percent for the biggest gains among S&P 500 stocks. American Airlines shook off an early loss and ended with a 0.6 percent gain after the carrier briefly grounded flights nationwide due to a technical issue. Elsewhere in the market, U.S. Steel rose 1.9 percent a day after an influential government panel failed to reach consensus on the possible national security risks of the nearly $15 billion proposed sale to Nippon Steel of Japan. NeueHealth surged 74.9 percent after the health care company agreed to be taken private in a deal valued at roughly $1.3 billion. Treasury yields held steady in the bond market on Christmas Eve. The yield on the 10-year Treasury was little changed at 4.59 percent. European markets closed mostly higher. Markets in Asia mostly gained ground. Tuesday's U.S. market rally comes as the stock market enters what's historically been a very cheerful season. The last five trading days of each year, plus the first two in the new year, have brought an average gain of 1.3 percent since 1950. The so-called "Santa rally" also correlates closely with positive returns in January and the upcoming year. So far this month, the U.S. stock market has lost some of its gains since President-elect Donald Trump's win on Election Day, which raised hopes for faster economic growth and more lax regulations that would boost corporate profits. Worries have risen that Trump's preference for tariffs and other policies could lead to higher inflation, a bigger U.S. government debt and difficulties for global trade. Even so, the stock market remains on pace to deliver strong returns for 2024. The benchmark S&P 500 is up almost 27 percent so far this year and remains within roughly 1 percent of the all-time high it set earlier this month — its latest of 57 records this year. U.S. markets will be closed Wednesday for Christmas. Wall Street has several economic reports to look forward to this week, including a weekly update on unemployment benefits on Thursday.
