The agency said Thursday the new technology, a shock-sensing probe, will be instrumental in validating computer models and gaining critical insights into supersonic aircraft behavior. The test results will be used to evaluate the current state of supersonic flight and potentially develop a quieter aircraft. ‘Under the Hood’ of the X-59 Quesst Shock-Sensing Probe The cone-shaped air data probe is designed to capture the unique “sonic thumps” and gather precise pressure data generated by the X-59. Researchers at the Armstrong Flight Research Center in Edwards, California developed two versions of this shock-sensing probe. The near-field probe captures shock waves occurring near the X-59 while the mid-field probe measures those at altitudes between 5,000 to 20,000 feet below the research aircraft. The probes are equipped with five pressure ports, which enables them to sense small pressure changes, particularly the weak shock waves produced by the X-59. These pressure ports combine their data to determine local pressure, speed and airflow direction. During the test, an F-15B aircraft equipped with the probe will fly behind another F-15. The probe will measure the shock waves generated by the second aircraft during the supersonic flight. Additionally, the researchers enhanced the heating system to prevent fluctuations caused by changing conditions seen in previous designs. “A shock-sensing probe acts as the truth source, comparing the predicted data with the real-world measurements,” said Mike Frederick, NASA principal investigator. “The probe will meet the resolution and accuracy requirements from the Quesst mission.”

The new report, written by the TTC’s chief people and culture officer Shakira Naraine, says e-bikes are a “readily available and affordable” form of commuting for low-income individuals, and alternatives may be seen as less economically viable and convenient. Instead, he’s only played one G League game so far and 20 NBA contests, shooting 41% on three-point shots in a floor-spacing role. For a franchise that was rightly hailed for a while as one of the best developmental organizations in the NBA, only to see the pipeline stall in recent years, the emergence of this class as viable NBA players so quickly is a needed win. Though Toronto has been hit with a double whammy of tons of injuries and close losses, spirits have remained high, with little signs of frustration. Rajakovic and his staff have done a strong job in that regard and it’s helped that the rookies have brought positive energy. It’s a series of extremely long waves set in motion when energy from an earthquake causes the ocean floor to suddenly rise or fall, according to the National Weather Service . Since 1800, California’s shores have been struck by more than 150 tsunamis, most of them minor, according to the California Geological Survey. Phones buzzed Thursday when the National Weather Service issued its warning just minutes after the quake struck west of Ferndale, a small city in coastal Humboldt County. It read in part: “You are in danger. Get away from coastal waters. Move to high ground or inland now.” Why was there an alert if there wasn’t a large tsunami? The National Weather Service Bay Area posted on the social platform X early Friday that the region doesn’t get tsunami alerts often and “there are lot of questions, frustration, and even some anger” about Thursday’s event. A warning alert is the most serious of four tsunami alerts, including a watch alert for a possible tsunami and an advisory alert telling people to stay out of the water and away from the shore. The last time California received a warning alert was 2011 when an earthquake in Japan caused about $100 million in damages along the California coast. Basically, a distant, offshore earthquake or other trigger event gives scientists more time to analyze data and confirm that a large tsunami was generated before sounding a warning. But Thursday’s earthquake was local and close to the coast, forcing a hasty high-level alert in order to give people the maximum time to prepare as tsunami waves can travel very fast, up to 500 mph (800 kph) in the deep ocean, the NWS wrote. “By the time we actually observe it, it may be too late, because it’s right there in our back doors,” said Dalton Behringer, a meteorologist with NWS Bay Area, on Friday. Scientists used the time Thursday to monitor buoys and get more information on the earthquake itself, he said. They canceled the alert after seeing little sea-level change and determining the quake was a strike-slip type of temblor that shifts more horizontally and is less prone to cause tsunamis, he said. “These things happen so infrequently for us, I think it just caught a lot of people off-guard,” he said. How did Northern California respond? Authorities in Eureka, the biggest city in Humboldt County, sent texts and went door-to-door to order businesses in high-risk areas to evacuate, said City Manager Miles Slattery. He said only a small portion of the city was at risk, and Thursday’s test run showed evacuees need to work on leaving by foot, rather than by car. In the San Francisco Bay Area, the commuter light-rail system known as BART stopped traffic in all directions through the underwater tunnel between San Francisco and Oakland for nearly an hour, and the San Francisco Zoo’s visitors were evacuated. Responses varied as fire and police in Berkeley evacuated certain areas of the city while in San Francisco, officials sent alerts and messages on social media telling residents to stay away from water, beaches, harbors, marina docks, and piers. “Move at least one block inland,” said the San Francisco Department of Emergency Management. Emergency personnel in vehicles with public address systems also went to make sure no one was on beaches and other low-lying areas. But some critics said San Francisco should have sounded its loud emergency sirens, which have been off-line since 2019 for repairs. In San Mateo County, just south of San Francisco, officials considered but decided against sounding its tsunami warning sirens after receiving more comprehensive information from the NWS that any tsunami would affect coastlines north of the Golden Gate Bridge, said Michelle Durand, a spokesperson for the county. Underwood had been committed to LSU since January. He was on track to become the first No. 1 overall quarterback and player to sign with LSU, according to the 247Sports Composite. Underwood attends Belleville High in Belleville, Michigan. Belleville is a 30 minute drive from Michigan's campus. CBS Sports also reported in November that Michigan had offered Underwood around $10 million in NIL money for the five-star recruits commitment. LSU's 2025 recruiting class drops to No. 6 in the nation following Underwood's decommitment. Coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday that McCaffrey will be out at least six weeks after injuring his posterior cruciate ligament in a loss to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday night . McCaffrey will be placed on injured reserve for the second time this season after previously missing the first eight games with Achilles tendinitis. “I just feel for him,” Shanahan said. “It was a real frustrating year for him. He worked his ass off to get back to this point and I think he was really feeling good and about to take off and just had that real unfortunate injury last night. I know he’s as crushed as anyone, but he’ll get through this. He’s a hell of a player, a hell of a person and an unbelievable 49er. He’ll be back stronger than ever next year to help us.” San Francisco (5-7) sits alone in last place in the NFC West standings, two wins behind division-leading Seattle, and in jeopardy of missing the playoffs a year after losing to Kansas City in the Super Bowl.
