In the domain of statute law, a particular challenge is the task of retrieving the concise set of entailing legal articles to a query. In this context, we refer to this task as entailing legal article set retrieval or, more briefly, legal article set retrieval. The task of retrieving entailing legal article sets differs markedly from traditional information retrieval (IR) in two main aspects. First, unlike the traditional IR which returns a ranked list of articles, the legal article set retrieval task seeks a concise set of articles. This level of specificity extends to the nature of the legal queries and legal articles themselves: They are inherently complex and steeped in specialized legal language, demanding a retrieval system with deeper legal reasoning and linking capacity. Second, while traditional IR efforts primarily involve ranking candidates by relevance, our task requires that the retrieved articles not just relate to but jointly entail the contents of a query or its negation. These characteristics set this task apart from the broader goals and methods of traditional IR tasks. Previous research in legal article set retrieval has predominantly employed two approaches. The first approach combines classical IR models with fine-tuned language models (LMs), and then ensembles the retrieval results to consolidate the final retrieved sets. Meanwhile, the second approach uses classical IR models exclusively for preliminary candidate filtering, which prepares inputs for further LM fine-tuning; the final results are often ensembled from various fine-tuned LMs. To address the task of legal article retrieval, a team of researchers from the Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (JAIST), led by Professor Le-Minh Nguyen and including doctoral students Chau Nguyen proposed a framework, called Retrieve-Revise-Refine. The framework is designed to pinpoint the concise set of legal articles that either entail a query or its negation, advancing the current understanding of this task. In addition, their approach leverages the unique advantages of combining both small LMs and large LMs to improve the accuracy of the articles retrieved (i.e., precision), while endeavoring to limit the loss in coverage (i.e., recall). The paper is in the journal . The framework consists of three stages: As shown in the empirical results, their proposed framework achieved state-of-the-art results for the task across two datasets, showing improvements of 3.17% and 4.24%, respectively.

GREENSBORO, N.C. – A police officer responding to a report of a man with a gun inside a North Carolina supermarket was fatally shot Monday and a suspect was later taken into custody, authorities said. Police announced the death of Greensboro police officer Michael Horan at a news conference, saying Horan was responding to the report when he was shot shortly before midday at a Food Lion store in Greensboro in the central part of the state. Recommended Videos Ramona Miller told WGHP-TV she was shopping with her 6-year-old granddaughter when she heard shots being fired. “We were on our way out and I was purchasing a lottery ticket and I was just sitting there and heard a ‘pop-pop’ and then ‘pop-pop-pop.’ I think I heard five shots,” Miller said. “At first I didn’t know it was a shooting ... but an employee yelled out, ‘Shooting! Shooting!’ ” Miller said she and her granddaughter left the store and that police arrived soon afterward. Authorities said Monday afternoon that the circumstances of the shooting remain under investigation and they did not immediately release further details about how it unfolded. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, the state's lead law enforcement agency, is continuing the investigation. Horan was hired in 2017 and became a sworn Greensboro Police Department officer in early 2018, Assistant Police Chief Milford J. Harris said. Horan served in the department’s patrol bureau. He also was a U.S. Coast Guard member since 2000, according to his LinkedIn profile. “He was an excellent officer. He had an outstanding reputation inside the department and in the community,” Harris said at the news conference. Gov. Roy Cooper said he was monitoring the day's developments. Cooper said on the social media platform X that his office had sent a “significant” number of state law enforcement officers to aid the emergency response in Greensboro. A heavy police presence was spotted outside the grocery store in Greensboro. The store will remain closed while authorities continue their investigation, Food Lion said in a statement, adding it was providing resources to its affected workers. It directed all questions to local law enforcement and said it was cooperating with the investigation. The shooting was another reminder that state lawmakers should strengthen resources and improve safety for law enforcement officers, said Democratic state Sen. Michael Garrett, who represents part of Guilford County where Greensboro is located. “During what should be a time of joy and celebration, another brave officer has been shot in the line of duty. PHOENIX — Kansas State faced a daunting task when DJ Giddens, one of the top running backs in the Big 12, opted out of the Rate Bowl to prepare for the NFL draft. Dylan Edwards showed the Wildcats and their fans they had nothing to worry about. Edwards ran for 196 yards and scored his third touchdown on a 36-yard run in the fourth quarter, helping Kansas State rally past Rutgers 44-41 in the Rate Bowl on Thursday night. “Dylan and those young guys, those kids are really good players,” Kansas State coach Chris Klieman said. “They just need belief and confidence.” They got it in the desert — after some early stumbles. LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Rams keep doing just enough to win, and a team that appeared to be rebuilding this season has climbed all the way to the brink of another playoff berth. The Rams improved to 9-6 and took control of the NFC West on Sunday with their fourth straight victory since Thanksgiving. Their 19-9 win over the New York Jets in sub-freezing temperatures was not dominant — they trailed 9-6 entering the fourth quarter, and they were outgained by nearly 100 yards — but Los Angeles still matched its largest margin of victory this season and continued to look like a looming nightmare for any postseason opponent. The Rams have now won eight of 10 since their bye week, when they were 1-4 and the NFL world wondered whether they would trade Super Bowl MVP receiver Cooper Kupp or even quarterback Matthew Stafford to spur their roster reboot. Los Angeles decided not to punt its season, and Sean McVay's team has driven from last to first. “You don’t want to ride the emotional roller coaster that these games can take you on,” McVay said Monday. “You do have the ability to stay steady, to stay the course and try to right the ship. Certainly that’s not complete by any stretch, but our guys have done an excellent job of not allowing the way that we started, especially in those first five games, to affect what we did coming off that bye.” The Rams also have clinched their seventh winning record in eight regular seasons under McVay — an achievement that shouldn’t get lost in the recent successes of a franchise that had 13 consecutive non-winning seasons before it rolled the dice and hired a 30-year-old head coach back in 2017. The Rams have scored more than 30 points just once all season, and they managed only 31 points in their last two games combined. Their defense has allowed only one touchdown in the past two games — but right before that, Josh Allen and the Bills racked up 42 points and 445 yards in the most recent of a few defensive stinkers from LA this season. I hate both those things, I'm not good at them, but this is so forgiving. Is it a Mario rip-off and marketing for PlayStation? Yes. But it transcends that. You're a little robot with little planets to rescue other robots like you. Many of those robots turn out to be references to other PlayStation games. What makes this game work for me is that you're never lost. If you missed some collectibles in a level, you can go through that level again with a little robot bird that's going to point you to where all the collectibles are. You don't have to go through the whole level and fight the boss again. It makes all the difference in the world. I want to be challenged, not frustrated. The move could usher in an end to a protracted political crisis in the European Union country following the annulment of a presidential election by a top court. Parliament approved the new administration in a 240-143 vote in Romania’s 466-seat legislature. The new coalition is made up of the leftist Social Democratic Party (PSD) the centre-right National Liberal Party (PNL), the small ethnic Hungarian UDMR party and national minorities. It caps a month-long period of turmoil in which far-right nationalists made significant gains in a parliamentary election on December 1 a week after a first-round presidential race saw the far-right outsider Calin Georgescu emerge as the front-runner. “It will not be an easy mandate for the future government,” Mr Ciolacu, whose PSD party topped the polls in the parliamentary election, said in a statement. “We are aware that we are in the midst of a deep political crisis,” he said. “It is also a crisis of trust, and this coalition aims to regain the trust of citizens, the trust of the people.” Romania’s 16 ministerial positions will be shared among the parties, which will hold a slim majority in the legislature. It is widely seen as a tactical partnership to shut out far-right nationalists whose voices found fertile ground amid high living costs and a sluggish economy. Mr Ciolacu, who came third in the first-round presidential ballot despite polls indicating he would win the most votes, has served as prime minister since June 2023. After parliament’s approval, President Klaus Iohannis swore in the new government and warned the new Cabinet that it is entering a “difficult new period” in which “for many Romanians, there are major concerns”. Romania was plunged into turmoil after Mr Georgescu’s surprise success in the presidential race, after allegations of electoral violations and Russian interference emerged. Days before the December 8 run-off, the Constitutional Court made the unprecedented move to annul the presidential race. “We go through complicated times, but I think we all learned from mistakes of the past,” Mr Ciolacu said. “I hope that together with my colleagues in the coalition, we’ll find the best solutions to get past the challenges we have in front of us.” Mr Ciolacu said that the new government would aim to quickly organise the rerun of the presidential election in which the new coalition has agreed to put forward an agreed common pro-European candidate.
