You have to “hire certain people based on their color, their sex,” complains investor Matt Cole in my new video . “You already have a talent problem, now you’re looking at only being able to recruit from a very small minority of individuals. Then you have to do climate pledges. Then you have to hire from unions.” “But diversity is good,” I push back. “That doesn’t mean that you should hire someone because of their race or skin color ... You have all these companies that could actually (build broadband), but its unimplementable with the restrictions. They just walk away.” Eventually, I assume the government will install at least some broadband. By then, their cables may be unnecessary, because of satellite internet, like Starlink, which doesn’t require digging up streets. “They could do it literally today,” says Cole. “You could have devices in these people’s homes within the next couple of months.” Why don’t government officials do that? At first, Biden bureaucrats said, “Starlink failed to demonstrate that it had the technical and financial ability.” When it became clear that Starlink obviously did, the administration suddenly called it a monopoly. Government pumped billions into “high-speed rail.” Fifteen years later, they’re still talking about the future. Bureaucrats wasted $500 million of your money on the solar company Solyndra, which then went bankrupt. They wasted millions more trying and failing to create “synthetic fuel.” More recently, Biden doled out $7 billion to build 500,000 EV charging stations. Two years later, they’ve built seven. Republicans joined Democrats in funding a CHIPS Act, meant to bring chipmaker jobs to America. It isn’t working. Most chips are still made in Taiwan. “Even if they get what they promise,” I point out to Cole, Congress appropriated “$53 billion for 115,000 promised jobs. Almost half a million dollars per job!” “You expect nothing else from government,” he replies.” With Republicans in charge, some say things will be better. But the problem isn’t just Democrats; it’s government. Trump’s steel tariffs destroyed American jobs by raising the price of steel. Politicians should just stop subsidizing certain businesses. (Photo by Alex Kent/Getty Images) P olice continue to search for the man who shot and killed UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in what appears to be a rare targeted assassination against a company executive. But violent threats against healthcare industry executives have been on the rise for years, according to a security specialist at the risk advisory firm Kroll. Matthew Dumpert, a managing director at Kroll covering business risk management and a former special agent with the Department of State’s Diplomatic Security Service, said he’s seen more threats across industries, but there’s been a spike in threats against healthcare executives in particular. “The healthcare and health sciences sectors are some of the most impacted because of the nature of their business, because they intersect with families at their time of real despair and need,” said Dumpert, who’d previously run personnel security operations for the U.S. government in Iraq and Libya. The threats are coming from a variety of sources, Dumpert told Forbes , many sent via social media, email and untraceable phones, and sometimes from groups operating on the dark web. “At that hour of the morning in a major city, I would have expected one of our clients to have a more recognizable security posture around them.” Since Thompson’s killing, Dumpert said his phone had been "ringing off the hook” with questions from clients about upping their security; Kroll offers security services to a range of clients, from venture capitalists and private family offices to law firms and places of worship. “The emails have been flooding in, of course, from healthcare,” he said. “Since this incident, clients in all industries, including the executives themselves, are reaching out directly and asking, what do we need to do to be better positioned to defend our people and defend our reputation?” Companies are increasingly looking to either build their own or outsource their intelligence networks, keeping tabs on where threats are being made and then triaging in real time to decide which to take seriously, he said. This would not be dissimilar to police intelligence centers, commonly referred to as Real-Time Crime Centers. “It's really important for companies and corporations and high net worth families to have ... a threat intelligence apparatus that helps them really understand, are there groups, are there people, or are there movements out there that may be conspiring against them?” he said. “It has to be around the clock, 24/7 to make informed decisions about risk and protection.” Early reports indicated that Thompson did not have any kind of security with him when he was gunned down outside a Hilton hotel in Manhattan on the day he was due to attend his company’s investor conference. He had a security detail assigned to his New York trip, according to CNN , citing an anonymous source, but they were not with him at the time. “At that hour of the morning in a major city, I would have expected one of our clients to have a more recognizable security posture around them,” Dumpert said. Thompson’s wife told NBC News that he had previously received threats, without providing specifics. UnitedHealthcare did not immediately respond to a comment request. High level executives, from Mark Zuckerberg to Jeff Bezos, often hire personal security, and many large firms spend hundreds of thousands if not millions of dollars protecting their top people. Per SEC records, Meta has spent over $20 million every year for the last three years for Zuckerberg’s personal security. By comparison, Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google owner Alphabet, was given a personal security budget of $6.8 million in 2023, while Apple CEO Tim Cook was granted $820,000. UnitedHealthcare does not release information about what it spends on executive security. The manhunt to track down Thompson’s killer is still ongoing. Police reportedly found bullet shell casings that had the words “deny,” “defend” and “depose” — apparent references to how insurance companies avoid paying out claims — at the scene. Recent data indicates that UnitedHealthcare has the highest claims denial rates in the country . In a bid to identify the shooter, New York police have released images and footage of the suspect. Australia will be able to withdraw $600m in funding for a PNG rugby league team at anytime and without cause under a 10-year deal struck to financially back the expansion side that will enter the NRL in 2028. The Australian government will not release terms of the deal between the two countries, which sits alongside the bilateral security agreement that comes into force on Thursday, but officials have described the arrangement as based on shared strategic trust. The deal, which starts in the current year and expires in 2034-35, includes the construction of a compound to accommodate players and tax breaks to assist in recruitment. Prime minister and rugby league fan Anthony Albanese said the deal – which has been years in the making – was about more than sport, and would bring benefits to the PNG economy and those living in the region. “Rugby league is PNG’s national sport, and PNG deserves a national team,” he said. ARLC chair Peter V’landys said the deal was a “historic step” for the sport, Australia, PNG and more broadly the entire Pacific region. “Rugby league isn’t just sport, it’s a social force for good – a way to improve lives and build stronger communities,” V’landys said. “The new PNG team provides the NRL with a new 10 million-plus audience many who will go from being casual fans into engaged fans. Just as importantly the pathways investments will provide many new and exciting players to the game. The spending is split roughly in half between the NRL club and other rugby league-related development activities in the Pacific. $290m will go towards the NRL franchise and $250m is for rugby league programs in the region. $60m will be paid directly to the NRL as a licence fee, which is expected to be shared between existing clubs. $120m of the money committed will come from existing government programmes, leaving an average annual cost to the budget of $48m. But she said she would wait until a hearing, and notably a background check, to make a decision. “I asked virtually every question under the sun,” Collins told reporters as she left her office after the meeting. “I pressed him both on his position on military issues as well as the allegations against him, so I don’t think there was anything that we did not cover.” The meeting with Collins was closely watched as she is seen as more likely than most of her Republican Senate colleagues to vote against some of Trump’s Cabinet picks. She and Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski, a fellow moderate Republican, did not shy from opposing Trump in his first term when they wanted to do so and sometimes supported President Joe Biden’s nominees for the judicial and executive branches.
