WASHINGTON (AP) — The acting director of the Secret Service said Thursday that the agency is “reorganizing and reimagining” its culture and how it operates following an assassination attempt against Donald Trump on the campaign trail. Members of a bipartisan House task force investigating the attempt on Trump's life pushed Ronald Rowe on how the agency’s staffers could have missed such blatant security vulnerabilities leading up to the July 13 shooting at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. At one point, the hearing devolved into a shouting match between Rowe and a Republican congressman. Rowe promised accountability for what he called the agency’s “abject failure” to secure the rally in Butler, where a gunman opened fire from a nearby building. Trump was wounded in the ear, one rallygoer was killed and two others were wounded. Another assassination attempt two months later contributed to the agency’s troubles. That gunman waited for hours for Trump to appear at his golf course in Florida, but a Secret Service agent thwarted the attack by spotting the firearm poking through bushes. The task force has been investigating both attempts, but it was the July shooting that dominated Thursday’s hearing. Its inquiry is one of a series of investigations and reports that have faulted the agency for planning and communications failures. The agency’s previous director resigned, and the Secret Service increased protections for Trump before the Republican won the November election. Rowe was repeatedly asked by flabbergasted lawmakers how problems so obvious in hindsight were allowed to happen. Rep. Jason Crow, a Colorado Democrat, said it was “just wild to me” that at a time of tech advances, the Secret Service was using text messages and emails to communicate in real time about threats. He also asked Rowe why so many things went wrong that day “yet nobody said anything.” Rowe said the agency used to have a culture where people felt comfortable speaking up. “I don’t know where we lost that,” he said. “We have to get back to that.” Rowe said the agency is putting a much stronger emphasis on training — something previous investigations found was lacking — and on doing more regular reviews of events to see what went right and where improvements can be made. “We are reorganizing and reimaging this organization," Rowe told lawmakers. He said the agency needs to identify possible leaders much earlier in their careers instead of just promoting people to command positions because they have been around a long time. The hearing was largely cordial, with members of Congress stressing the bipartisan nature of their work and praising Rowe for cooperating with their investigation even as they pushed him for explanations. But at one point, Rowe and Rep. Pat Fallon, a Texas Republican, faced off — shouting over each other as other members pleaded for order. Fallon pulled out a photo of President Joe Biden, Trump and others at this year's Sept. 11 ceremony in New York and asked Rowe why he was at the event, suggesting it was to burnish his prospects at getting the director job permanently. Trump has not yet named his pick to lead the agency. “I was there to show respect for a Secret Service member that died on 9/11. Do not invoke 9/11 for political purposes!” Rowe shouted. “You wanted to be visible because you were auditioning for this job that you’re not going to get!” Fallon later shot back. Rowe roared back: "You are out of line, Congressman. You are out of line!” “You're a bully,” Fallon said. This was the task force’s second public hearing and the first time that Rowe has addressed its members in public. The panel has until Dec. 13 to release its final report. Rep. Mark Green, a Tennessee Republican, said the agency’s conduct during the July shooting seemed almost “lackadaisical.” He said some of the issues that went wrong that day were ”really basic things.” “It speaks of an apathy or a complacency that is really unacceptable in an organization like the Secret Service,” Green said. The task force conducted 46 transcribed interviews, attended over a dozen briefings and reviewed over 20,000 documents. Members also visited the site of both assassination attempts and went to the FBI’s laboratory in Quantico, Virginia, to look at evidence. Rowe said Thursday that the agency's internal investigation , whose findings were released last month, identified failures by multiple employees. He noted that the quality of the advance work — the people who scope out event locations ahead of time — did not meet agency standards. He vowed accountability for those who fell down on the job. Many of the investigations have centered on why buildings near the rally with a clear line of sight to the stage where Trump was speaking were not secured in advance. The gunman, Thomas Crooks, climbed onto the roof of one of them and opened fire before being killed by a Secret Service counter-sniper. Rowe pointed to the failure to protect the building as the most glaring oversight that day. He also was asked about the morale of agents and new hires. Rowe said applications are actually up this year — the agency made a net gain of about 200 agents during the past fiscal year, meaning both new agents were hired and veteran agents retained.
Australians can expect to use more artificial intelligence tools in 2025, according to tech experts, but the software will also become smarter, more regulated, and less likely to make things up. or signup to continue reading The forecasts come after a record-breaking year for generative AI tools, which saw the software introduced to smartphones, televisions, vehicles and social networks, and increasingly welcomed in universities, workplaces and government agencies. But with the value of AI expected to soar to $US826 billion by 2030, up from $US184 billion in 2024 according to , big changes are on the way. These are five AI trends to watch in the coming year, according to Australian academics and industry experts. AGENTS OF CHANGE While generative AI tools first appeared as chatbots in late 2022, the technology will power "agents" in 2025. In launching Gemini 2.0 in early December, Google chief executive Sundar Pichai said AI agents would be able to perform a series of tasks automatically and "bring us closer to our vision of a universal assistant". "We have been investing in developing more agentic models, meaning they can understand more about the world around you, think multiple steps ahead, and take action on your behalf with your supervision," he said. The tech giant is not alone in striving to create smarter AI, UNSW AI Institute chief scientist Toby Walsh said, but the challenge ahead would be substantial. While AI chatbots answered questions or composed text, he said, AI agents would be tasked with making decisions and acting on them, creating legal and ethical challenges if something went wrong. "It's the real challenge of AI: systems that have some autonomy, some ability to act on their own in the real world," he said. "When you give it the ability to take control over parts of your computer or buy things and do things for you, the potential for things to go wrong is much greater." STRICT RULES The will gradually come into force in 2025, with a ban on some high-risk AI uses in February, such as social scoring, and obligations on general AI systems enforced by August. While some rules are already having an impact on internet users, University of the Sunshine Coast computer science lecturer Erica Mealy said its benefits were stacked in favour of European residents who were being offered the chance to opt in to AI features rather than having to opt out of them. "If you're not in the EU, too bad, so sad, we will make you opt out," she said. "That relies on you having more knowledge of the platforms and knowing what has been turned on." But Australia is likely to get its first legal restrictions on generative AI technology in 2025, with a parliamentary inquiry recommending the introduction of a law dedicated to regulating high-risk AI uses. The also recommended any law include restrictions on general purpose AI tools, and that the government consult with creative workers on the use of their copyright material. AI IN EVERYTHING First Samsung, then Google, now Apple: all three major smartphone manufacturers have added generative AI tools to their devices. The technology will enter even more technological spaces in 2025, Prof Walsh said, as manufacturers develop innovative ways to use the technology and embed it in all parts of an operating system, rather than keeping it in a single app. "A bit of AI is going to be sprinkled into everything electrical," he said. "Every device and every workflow is going to have some AI sitting in the background, trying to help you out." Users can expect generative AI technology to enhance more photos and videos they capture, Prof Walsh said, to appear in more cars, on more online platforms, and embedded in more services. BIG BUSINESS While the technology is expected to enter a lot of pockets in 2025, AI is forecast to play an even bigger role in the business world. The technology was named as the most revolutionary tech of 2025 by several Atlassian executives, and Team Anywhere head Annie Dean said it would continue to remove menial, routine tasks to help workers focus on larger projects. "AI will erase busywork and give teams the exactly support they need to explore and execute big ideas, faster," she said. "When teams collaborate with AI, they can more easily bring their ideas to life." The federal government has also revealed plans to launch a in the coming year to build on the $2 billion in venture capital invested in local AI applications in 2023. The plan is expected to launch in late 2025, following industry and public consultations. FOUNDATIONAL FIXES Investments in artificial intelligence are expected to keep growing in 2025, and some funds will be directed to fixing and improving foundation models. While more work was needed to tackle hallucinations, in which AI tools generate incorrect or nonsensical information to fill in knowledge gaps, Prof Walsh said, future research would also focus on expanding their abilities. "The foundation models are very good at retrieving information, summarising information, but they're very bad at reasoning," he said. "There are plentiful examples where they will say one plus one is not the same as two." To build on AI models' reasoning ability, researchers will need to train the technology in greater real-world context, such as gravity and rain, which programs are unable to experience. "AI is advancing at an amazing rate and that's because at the moment the world is spending a billion dollars a day on it," he said. "We are at the peak of the hype cycle and at some point the froth will blow off the top of the glass, but companies are still seeing a significant return." (The Center Square) – The House is set to vote on the compromise version of the National Defense Authorization Act which authorizes nearly $900 billion to support U.S. military service members, infrastructure, and defense capabilities during the 2025 fiscal year. The 1,813-page document released Saturday by the Senate and House Armed Services Committees outlines U.S. defense policy priorities and their costs for 2025. Most of the proposed funds, $849.9 billion out of the $895.2 billion topline, would go to programs within the Department of Defense. Though the result of a bipartisan compromise, some provisions remain a point of contention, including a Republican addition that prohibits the military’s health program from covering any gender dysphoria treatments on minors that could "result in sterilization.” Ranking Member of the House Armed Services Committee Adam Smith, D-Wash., has urged House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., to “abandon” the provision and allow the House to bring forward a bill that “doesn’t attack the transgender community.” Johnson has argued that the current NDAA will “restore our focus on military lethality and to end the radical woke ideology being imposed on our military.” If the legislation passes, junior enlisted service members would receive a historic 14.5% pay raise and all other service members a 4.5% basic pay raise. The NDAA plan would also address multiple quality of life issues for service members, highlighted in a September report from the Government Accountability Office that revealed unsanitary and rundown living conditions for military personnel. It authorizes $2.7 billion to improve housing conditions, build more housing, and increase oversight. It also increases healthcare access and childcare services for military members by cutting red tape and approving $176 million for the construction of new childcare centers and $110 million for the construction of new schools. “Funding our military is one of Congress' most important responsibilities,” House Foreign Affairs Committee Majority Chairman, Michael McCaul, R-Texas, said on X. “Our brave men and women in uniform and their spouses allow us to enjoy the freedoms we have today. They deserve every benefit in this bill.” The legislation authorizes hundreds of billions in defense-related infrastructure and technology investments, including approximately $17.5 billion for military base or industrial construction projects; $33.5 billion to build seven battle force ships; and more than $161 billion for innovation and technology research and related programs. Nearly $16 billion would go to the Pacific Deterrence Initiative, funding new technologies like hypersonic weapons and AI to deter the Chinese Communist Party and mitigate espionage and cybersecurity risks. Anti-terrorism initiatives in the Middle East and overseas U.S. military construction projects countering North Korea and Russia would also receive funding, as well as a U.S.-Israel missile defense program and the Taiwan Security Cooperation Initiative. “We remain determined to confront increasingly hostile threats from Communist China, Russia, and Iran, and this legislation provides our military with the tools they need to deter our enemies,” Johnson said in a statement. “The safety and security of the American people is top priority, and this bill ensures our military has the resources and capabilities needed to remain the most powerful force in the world.” U.S. border security receives a relatively small portion of funds from the NDAA, with $90 million authorized for the construction of a new command and control facility at the U.S.-Mexico border and a $10 million increase in funding for the DOD’s counternarcotics activities. The House Rules Committee is set to vote Monday afternoon on advancing the measure to the House floor, where it can pass with a majority vote. The Senate must vote on it by the end of the month for it to take effect.Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield reverses decision to put a time limit on anesthesia

Angela Onwuzoo Medical experts have identified Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and glomerulonephritis as three major factors responsible for the rise in kidney diseases across the globe. The experts also blamed the surge on unhealthy diets, particularly processed foods. According to the World Health Organisation, kidney diseases are now the 10th leading cause of death globally, stating that mortality has increased from 813,000 in 2000 to 1.3 million in 2019. The Nigeria Association of Nephrology says about 20 million Nigerians are presently living with chronic kidney diseases. Speaking with PUNCH HealthWise in an exclusive interview on the worrisome rise, a Consultant Nephrologist at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, Dr. Theophilus Umeizudike, identified an increase in Type 2 diabetes which he blamed on the consumption of processed and unhealthy foods as a major cause of kidneys diseases globally. Umeizudike also blamed the rise in kidney diseases on hypertension and glomerulonephritis. The nephrologist explained, “Globally, the cause mainly is because of the increase in Type 2 diabetes which is also rising in our environment. “The reason why Type 2 diabetes is rising globally is because of people abandoning natural foods for processed foods. “So, processed foods are the reasons why people are coming down with Type 2 diabetes and people with Type 2 diabetes come down with kidney diseases later in life. Hypertension is also increasing cases of kidney diseases.” The kidney specialist noted that kidney diseases were on the rise in Nigeria. “In our clime, we have a very young population that are prone to many infections and inflammatory conditions that can affect the kidneys. “Oftentimes, the early signs of infection or inflammation of the kidney are silent. So, years down the line, these things begin to manifest. “In sub-Saharan Africa, we have glomerulonephritis that affects the kidney. It causes kidney damage over months or years usually within a period of five to 10 years. There are viral infections like hepatitis B, C, and HIV that cause kidney diseases”, he said. The nephrologist also attributed the surge in kidney diseases to a lack of access to affordable healthcare. Umeizudike said, “Another cause is that many of these young people do not have access to affordable healthcare. So, they resort to alternative therapies like herbal remedies which can damage their kidneys. “Again, we have a predisposition to coming down with kidney diseases as people of African origin because of gene mutation.” On how people can avoid coming down with kidney diseases, the nephrologist enjoined them to embrace a healthy lifestyle and to go for regular health checks for early detection and proper management. Umeizudike explained that when people keep living on processed foods, the tendency to come down with kidney diseases is high. “Eating processed foods pushes people to Type 2 diabetes and increases the risk of kidney diseases later on in life”, he reiterated. According to him, for someone to know whether he has a kidney issue, the person must go and do a test, adding that without a medical test, kidney diseases cannot be detected. He noted, “Medical tests are very important because early forms of kidney disease are completely asymptomatic. Once people start having symptoms of kidney disease, it means that it has advanced which will then require dialysis or transplant.” He pointed out that everybody should be worried about kidney diseases, assuring however that the risks of kidney diseases could be reduced or avoided through regular health checks and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. According to him, people in their 20s are coming down with kidney diseases. Also, a Registered Dietitian-Nutritionist, Cynthia Onyekwere, told PUNCH HealthWise that an unhealthy diet was a major contributing factor to the onset of kidney diseases. The dietician explained, “For one to keep kidney diseases away, it is important to pay close attention to his/her diet and make some dietary adjustments by mainly reducing intake of certain foods that can affect renal function negatively. “One of such foods to be reduced is salt. Salt contains sodium which when consumed in excess can cause high blood pressure which can lead to kidney damage. “To achieve a reduced salt intake, one can start by reducing the amount of salt and stock cubes used in cooking, stop adding salt to meals when eating, and limit intakes of pastries and salty snacks. “Also, processed foods can also affect renal function and as such should be consumed in limited amounts. Examples of processed foods include canned meat as well as canned fruits and vegetables. They should be consumed sparingly as they contain a lot of sodium.” Speaking further, Onyekwere noted, “Too much intake of protein can damage the kidneys. Although protein is required for the repair of worn-out tissues and the build-up of new ones, when consumed excessively, it is harmful to the kidneys. This is because it is the kidney that helps the body to get rid of the waste products that are generated after the digestion of protein. “Eating too much protein will place more burden on the kidneys and this can progressively cause damage. People must also be wary of herbal concoctions to ensure optimal renal function. Herbal concoctions in water or alcohol extracts contain substances that may be toxic to the kidneys.” Copyright PUNCH All rights reserved. The San Francisco 49ers are preparing for their Week 17 contest against the Detroit Lions on Monday at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California. Both teams have released their official injury reports, which are provided below. San Francisco 49ers Out G Aaron Banks (knee), DE Robert Beal (ankle), G Spencer Burford (calf), LB Dre Greenlaw (calf) Questionable LB Tatum Bethune (knee), S Ji'Ayir Brown (ankle), T Colton McKivitz (knee), CB Charvarius Ward (personal matter) Detroit Lions Out RB David Montgomery (knee), WR Kalif Raymond (foot) Questionable LB Jalen Reeves-Maybin (neck) Injury Notes With Trent Williams and Jaylon Moore on injured reserve and several others ruled out for Monday night's game against the Detroit Lions, quarterback Brock Purdy may find himself working behind a patched-together offensive line. It presents a significant challenge for a playoff-eliminated 49ers team aiming to pull off an upset victory. Neither right tackle Colton McKivitz nor offensive lineman Spencer Burford practiced on Saturday. While McKivitz was limited on Thursday, he has missed the last two practices entirely due to a knee injury. He is questionable to play. Burford, on the other hand, hasn't practiced all week after suffering a calf injury against the Miami Dolphins and has been ruled out against the Lions. Head coach Kyle Shanahan acknowledged that left guard Aaron Banks would be placed on injured reserve ahead of Monday night's game. Shanahan previously confirmed that linebacker Dre Greenlaw would not play again this season, so his inclusion on the list of those ruled out comes as no surprise. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that running back Isaac Guerendo is expected to play on Monday night. Shanahan confirmed that the rookie is full-go. Fullback Kyle Juszczyk returned to practice on Saturday after missing Friday's session due to an illness. Below are Saturday's practice participation reports for both the 49ers and Lions, which were provided by the 49ers Communications staff. Multiple VCs who invest in this space said there are now a fair amount of space tech, nano-materials, agriculture and composites, food tech, biotech, aerospace and defence ventures at various stages of incubation. “Most of this deep tech deal sourcing is today coming from incubators such as SINE and each funds proprietary networks,” added Desai. A little over a decade ago, many deep tech enterprises in areas such as space couldn’t get funded even if the VCs liked the idea because they couldn’t see visibility on follow-on funders. “But today it’s become easy for a deep tech venture to raise money as there are multiple funds who will look at Series A, B, C and D funding rounds,” said Samir Kapur, General Partner, Athera Venture Partners speaking at the event organised to commemorate SINE’s 20th anniversary. Part of the reason for the bullishness in the outlook of VC’s is both the growth opportunities presented by the sector — with the government for the first time coming out with a 10-year policy on space backed by budgets — and also by the evolving maturity of the investee firms business models. “We believe that demand for aerospace and defence can cross the predicted 8% per annum growth mark to 20%-25% a year by looking at domestic and export markets,” said Maneck Behramdin, Business Head aerospace at Godrej & Boyce manufacturing company. Seconding the companies, Amey Belorkar, Senior Vice President, IDBI Capital Markets & Services said that thanks to the Israel and Ukraine wars, India’s status as a neutral country is making it very attractive for global firms to Make in India and sell to the world. Firms are applying deep tech in areas even as fundamental as water where India has the physical capacity to treat only 30% of the 72 billion litres of wastewater generated. “We have managed the entire sewage and water infrastructure of Istanbul for several years and now are managing the sewage for four Indian cities including Agra and Ghaziabad,” said Skandaprasad Seetharaman, Group CFO, VA Tech Wabag. Addressing the innovation nation event Bhavish Aggarwal, Co-founder, Ola group said, “Momentum has built in starting up in India. Viksit Bharat will have to be founded on technological innovation by building jobs of the future for our citizens.” Keeping this spirit in mind and to give further impetus to deep tech start-ups, SINE has selected the first two recipients of a grant of Rs 50 lakh each, under its Project Titanium initiative. The grant, funded by alumni of IIT-B, follows a competitive selection process for choosing companies that show the most promise in taking technology discovered at the premier engineering school’s labs and commercialise it, as a for profit venture. The first ever Project Titanium awardees include Rheoheme, which is developing a low cost and low maintenance diagnostic platform for sickle cell disease, malaria and complete blood count for lower- and middle-income countries. The other awardee is Ferry Lifesciences which is developing a novel microfluidics device coupled with internet of things capabilities that can diagnose and treat anaemia - the commonest nutritional deficiency globally and a condition that affects every one of two Indian women.
