Paris, Dec 23 (AP) French President Emmanuel Macron's office announced a new government Monday, after the previous Cabinet collapsed in a historic vote prompted by fighting over the country's budget. The government, put together by newly named Prime Minister Francois Bayrou, includes members of the outgoing conservative-dominated team and new figures from centrist or left-leaning backgrounds. Coming up with a 2025 budget will be the most urgent order of business. The new government enters office after months of political deadlock and crisis and pressure from financial markets to reduce France's colossal debt. Macron has vowed to remain in office until his term ends in 2027, but has struggled to govern since snap elections in the summer left no single party with a majority in the National Assembly. Since his appointment 10 days ago, Bayrou has held talks with political leaders from various parties in search of the right balance for the new government. Some critics on Monday were angry at Bayrou for consulting with Marine Le Pen's far-right party, and some argue the government looks too much like the old one to win lawmakers' trust. Former Prime Minister Michel Barnier resigned this month following a no-confidence vote prompted by budget disputes in the National Assembly, leaving France without a functioning government. Le Pen played a key role in Barnier's downfall by joining her National Rally party's forces with the left to pass the no-confidence motion. Bayrou will need support from moderate legislators on the right and left to keep his government alive. Banker Eric Lombard will be finance minister, a crucial post when France is working to fulfil its promises to European Union partners to reduce its deficit, estimated to reach 6 per cent of its gross domestic product this year. Lombard briefly worked as an adviser to a Socialist finance minister in the 1990s. Bayrou has said he supports tax hikes championed by his predecessor, but it's not clear how the new government can find the right calculation for a budget that satisfies a majority of lawmakers angry over spending cuts. Hard-right Bruno Retailleau stays on as interior minister, with responsibility for France's security and migration policy. Sebastien Lecornu, who has been at the forefront of France's military support for Ukraine, remains defence minister, while Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot, who has travelled extensively in the Mideast in recent weeks, also retains his post. Among new faces are two former prime ministers. Manuel Valls will be minister for overseas affairs, and Elisabeth Borne takes the education ministry. Philippe Clement pointed to selection struggles as he responded to a question on the attacking nature of his side against Kilmarnock. Rangers ran rampant against the Ayrshire side with a flurry of goals in the second half to earn a 6-0 victory in the Scottish Premiership. Danilo started up front with Hamza Igamane also involved from the start alongside Ianis Hagi and Vaclav Cerny. Clement discussed his team selection post-match as he insisted the only reason it has taken time to adopt a more attacking system is down to player availability. Responding to a question on the starting XI "setting the tone and Rangers on the front foot", Clement said: "Yes, but how many times in this one year did I have two strikers available in the squad? That's the reality of the story also. Read more: Clement confirms Rangers 'big discussions' over transfer window "So it's major, it's important to keep everybody fit and you say now the right choices, but I'm sure if we didn't win with 6-0 that maybe you would have said, why is Connor Barron not starting today? "It's like that. It's like that, but all these players are pushing, they're working hard. I cannot say anything about that. "We need to keep it that way and then they all will have their moments to shine. They all will have their moments also to sit on the bench and to be ready for the next game because it's such an ultra marathon this season that we need this rotation and smart rotation in the squad and that's what we're going to do the next weeks and the next month. "So I'm sure maybe you're going to be the first one if we don't win the game to say, why is that one not playing? But that's easy after the game with insight. So that's the difficulty about this job."MILLIONS of Americans will not receive their Social Security checks on the usual date this month. However the good news is that because of Christmas , they will come through a day earlier than expected. The payments , worth up to $4,873, will hit bank accounts on December 24 because of the way the holidays fall this year. This change affects people who usually receive their money on the fourth Wednesday of every month, which in December is Christmas Day. And with pretty much everything closed for business over the holiday, it means recipients will receive their checks or direct payment to their bank accounts on Christmas Eve. It won’t affect all beneficiaries though, as how Social Security payments are distributed across the US depends on birth dates. Read more on social security Those with birthdays from the 1st until 10th of the month receive their money on the second Wednesday of each month. Recipients born on the 11th until the 20th are paid on the third Wednesday every month. Finally, people with a birthday falling from the 21st until the 31st of the month receive their social security payment on the fourth Wednesday of each month. SUPPLEMENTAL SECURITY INCOME Americans who receive supplemental security income (SSI) will face a second change at the end of the year. Most read in Money This benefit is paid to recipients on the first of the month – which of course in January is New Year’s Day . As this is a holiday, payments will be made the day before, meaning recipients will receive the first payment of 2025 on the last day of 2024. What’s more, the maximum monthly SSI payment on December 31 will be $967, rather than the $943 max seen so far this year. This is because the annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for 2025 kicks in from January. It represents a 2.5% increase to the monthly distribution and is based on inflation rates, as well as on what the government decides individuals need. Social Security provides a source of income when you retire or if you cannot work due to a disability. There are four main types of Social Security benefits: Retirement - a monthly check that replaces part of your income when you reduce your hours or stop working altogether. Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or “disability” provides monthly payments to people who have a disability that stops or limits their ability to work. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) - provides monthly payments to people with disabilities and older adults who have little or no income or resources. Survivor benefits - monthly payments to eligible family members of people who worked and paid Social Security taxes before they died. Supplemental Security Income is paid to individuals and couples age 65 and older, people with disabilities and those with limited income and resources. To qualify you need to have less than $2,000 in assets ($3,000 for a couple). BANK AND POST OFFICE CLOSURES Along with many retailers, banks and post offices will be closed on Christmas Day. They will generally be open on Christmas Eve, but may be working to reduced opening times. The USPS is shutting all of its post offices for Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, with services back to normal on December 26 and January 2. It confirms though that its offices will be open on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, but advises customers to check with their local branch for holiday hours. Some banks will be open on Christmas Eve, including some branches of Bank of America , Citibank and Capital One , according to USA Today . Again check with your local branch for up-to-date opening times. The SSA has a helpful calendar that shows the schedule for social security payments. SentinelOne down 11% after Q3 profit missThe Edmonton Oilers will be very involved in trade discussions in the months leading up to the NHL’s Trade Deadline, but who do they have to give up? Rumours about potential Oilers targets have popped up over recent weeks, with defencemen like and being linked to the team. Even goaltender . Yet, not much discussion has been had about the type of assets that Edmonton may give up in any of those potential deals. Draft picks will, of course, be expendable for an Oilers team hoping to finally capture the Stanley Cup, but are there any players in the organization who could be moved out? Possibly. Here are three potential players that the Oilers could dangle in trade talks this season: Though the , his name will be mentioned plenty by fans who are discussing potential trades. There is a lot to like about Savoie, who is a former top-10 pick in the 2022 NHL draft, as he torched the WHL last season. He’s got the pedigree of a high pick and the high-end talent that you want to see in your prospect pool. The problem is that he is unlikely to help the Oilers win a Stanley Cup this season, making him somewhat expendable if the team is looking to upgrade the NHL roster. Savoie is currently the team’s top prospect in a pretty barren pipeline, so there is always a risk in trading him, but the option is there. It might be shocking to see Evander Kane’s name here as the 33-year-old has yet to play a game this season due to a bevy of injuries, but it’s not without merit. and that will cause quite a crunch for the forward group. The team is in need of a scoring bump, but betting on Kane to provide that after such an extended period off would be risky. He found himself playing third-line minutes at times last season, and considering his $5.125 cap hit, it might be in the Oilers’ best interest to see if they can find him a new home. It’s tough to say what Kane’s value is on the trade market right now, and the recent injuries combined with the high cap hit may make it a difficult sell for some teams. The Oilers are no stranger to trading first-round picks less than a year after they draft them, and Sam O’Reilly could be next. during the 2024 NHL draft, signalling that the team felt strongly about adding him to the system. That alone might point to the Oilers preferring to keep O’Reilly over trading him, but GM Stan Bowman won’t have a lot of assets to work with if he wants to make a trade to improve this team. While O’Reilly did have a good training camp, he could be the main target of a rebuilding team in any trade with the Oilers. Think Reid Schafer when the Oilers traded him to the Nashville Predators in a package for Mattias Ekholm back in 2023.

The House Ethics Committee finally released its report about allegations against Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida on Monday after Donald Trump’s failed effort to nominate the former congressman as U.S. Attorney General. And while Gaetz has denied allegations that he had sex with a minor, it’s a pretty shocking read all around. From at least 2017 to 2020, Gaetz allegedly paid thousands of dollars for sex with women, as well as a 17-year-old girl. The report also alleges that Gaetz took illegal drugs like cocaine and ecstasy, and accepted a gift trip to the Bahamas that broke congressional rules. Gaetz also helped one of the women he was having sex with to get an expedited passport, falsely telling the State Department that she was one of his constituents, according to the report. Gaetz also allegedly obstructed Congress as the investigation into his behavior was conducted and refused to cooperate as the committee sought to establish whether the congressman had broken ethics rules. It’s unclear whether Gaetz will face state charges over any of the allegations, though the committee no longer has jurisdiction over Gaetz since he resigned his seat, despite winning reelection in November. The congressional report found that based on its investigation, “there was substantial evidence that Representative Gaetz violated House Rules, state and federal laws, and other standards of conduct prohibiting prostitution, statutory rape, illicit drug use, acceptance of impermissible gifts, the provision of special favors and privileges, and obstruction of Congress.” The report also includes screenshots of text messages from Joel Greenberg, a friend of Gaetz who’s currently serving 11 years in prison for sex trafficking of a minor. Greenberg pleaded guilty to several charges in 2022 but denied having sex with any underage girls. The report has a breakdown of how much Gaetz allegedly paid various women from 2017 to 2020, totaling over $60,000, including a former girlfriend who was allegedly involved in some of the activities with sex workers, though the report notes “some of the payments may have been of a legitimate nature.” Gaetz did not hand over text messages to the committee, but the report includes some messages from him, presumably obtained through the sex workers he was paying. The texts sometimes refer to “party favors” which the report claims are references to illegal drugs. The committee also details in the report how Gaetz was allegedly introduced to women by Greenberg who found them on the website SeekingArrangement.com, an online dating site now known as just Seeking.com, which specializes in “sugar dating” relationships where a younger woman typically engages with an older man under some kind of steady financial arrangement. Gaetz took to social media after the release of the report to defend himself against the charges in the report. Many Republicans objected to the release of the report, including the chairman of the ethics committee Rep. Michael Guest of Mississippi. Guest wrote for the dissenting members of the committee, insisting they no longer had jurisdiction to release the findings since Gaetz had resigned, an argument that doesn’t make any sense whatsoever. “We believe that operating outside the jurisdictional bounds set forth by House Rules and Committee standards, especially when making public disclosures, is a dangerous departure with potentially catastrophic consequences,” wrote Guest. It’s not clear what could be “dangerous” about releasing a congressional report unless it contained something inaccurate, which Guest doesn’t allege. Congress releases reports about people who’ve never worked as congressmen all the time. The committee simply doesn’t have jurisdiction to punish him anymore. The state and federal authorities, however, do have jurisdiction if they wish to charge him with any of the offenses outlined in the report. There are hundreds of pages included in the appendices, with everything from airline boarding passes and travel itineraries to questionnaires submitted to the committee and text messages between Gaetz and the women he allegedly paid for sex. And some on social media took the opportunity to joke about some of the details in there, including the fact that at least one of the women was flying Spirit Airlines . Whatever the topic, the internet is going to roast you.
Things to watch this week in the Big 12 Conference: No. 14 BYU (9-1, 6-1 Big 12, No. 14 CFP) at No. 21 Arizona State (8-2, 5-2, No. 21), Saturday, 3:30 p.m. ET (ESPN) League newcomer Arizona State has a three-game winning streak and BYU is coming off its first loss. The Cougars, after losing at home to Kansas, still control their own destiny in making the Big 12 championship game. They can clinch a spot in that Dec. 7 game as early as Saturday, if they win and instate rival Utah wins at home against No. 22 Iowa State. Arizona State was picked at the bottom of the 16-team league in the preseason media poll, but already has a five-win improvement in coach Kenny Dillingham's second season. No. 16 Colorado (8-2, 6-1, No. 16 CFP) at Kansas (4-6, 3-4), Saturday, 3:30 p.m. ET (Fox) Coach Deion Sanders and the Buffaloes are in prime position to make the Big 12 title game in their return to the league after 13 seasons in the Pac-12. If BYU and Utah win, Colorado would be able to claim the other title game spot with a win over Kansas. The Buffs have a four-game winning streak. The Jayhawks need another November win over a ranked Big 12 contender while trying to get bowl eligible for the third season in a row. Kansas has won consecutive games over Top 25 teams for the first time in school history, knocking off Iowa State before BYU. Iowa State quarterback Rocco Becht has thrown a touchdown in a school-record 14 consecutive games, while receivers Jayden Higgins and Jaylin Noel both have more than 800 yards receiving. San Jose State is the only other FBS team with a pair of 800-yard receivers. Becht has 2,628 yards and 17 touchdowns passing for the Cyclones (8-2, 5-2), who are still in Big 12 contention. Oklahoma State goes into its home finale against Texas Tech with a seven-game losing streak, its longest since a nine-game skid from 1977-78. The only longer winless streak since was an 0-10-1 season in 1991. This is Mike Gundy's 20th season as head coach, and his longest losing streak before now was five in a row in 2005, his first season and the last time the Cowboys didn't make a bowl game. ... Baylor plays at Houston for the first time since 1995, the final Southwest Conference season. The Cougars won last year in the only meeting since to even the series 14-14-1. ... Eight Big 12 teams are bowl eligible. As many as six more teams could reach six wins. The Big 12 already has four 1,000-yard rushers, including three who did it last season. UCF's RJ Harvey is the league's top rusher (1,328 yards) and top scorer with 21 touchdowns (19 rushing/two receiving). The others with consecutive 1,000-yard seasons are Texas Tech career rushing leader Tahj Brooks (1,184 yards) and Kansas State's DJ Giddens (1,128 yards). Cam Skattebo with league newcomer Arizona State has 1,074 yards. Devin Neal, the career rushing leader at his hometown university, is 74 yards shy of being the first Kansas player with three 1,000-yard seasons. Cincinnati's Corey Kiner needs 97 yards to reach 1,000 again. Get local news delivered to your inbox!ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — New Jersey gambling regulators have handed out $40,000 in fines to two sportsbooks and a tech company for violations that included taking bets on unauthorized events, and on games that had already ended. In information made public Monday, the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement fined DraftKings $20,000. It also levied $10,000 fines on Rush Street Interactive NJ and the sports betting technology company Kambi. According to documents released by the state, Rush Street accepted 16 bets worth $1,523 in Nov. 2021 on a college basketball game between the University of North Carolina-Asheville and Tennessee Tech University after the game had already concluded with a UNC victory. Kambi told the enforcement division that a trader had failed to manually remove that game from its betting markets, saying it had stopped receiving messages from its own sports data provider due to a network connectivity error. Kambi said it has updated its guidelines and retrained its traders to prevent a recurrence. Kambi, which is based in Malta, did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment Monday. Rush Street declined comment, and DraftKings had no immediate comment Monday. DraftKings stopped using Kambi in 2021. In March 2022 Rush Street took seven bets totaling just under $2,900 on three Magic City Jai Alai games after the results were already known. Kambi told the division it experienced a connectivity issue that allowed the bets to be accepted after the games were over. An explanation of what Kambi did to address the situation was blacked out in documents released by the division. A month earlier Rush Street took 13 wagers worth $8,150 with pre-match odds on a Professional Golf Association match after the event had already begun. In this case, Kambi told the division a newly hired trader failed to enter the correct closing time time for bets on the event. The trader and a supervisor underwent retraining. DraftKings was fined for taking bets on unapproved events including Russian basketball for nine months in 2020 and 2021. It eventually voided over $61,000 in bets and returned the money to customers after being directed to do so by the state. In this case, Kambi told the division it misidentified this particular Russian basketball league as one that was approved for wagering in New Jersey. DraftKings told the state it did not catch the error, either. In 2020, DraftKings accepted 484 wagers on unapproved table tennis matches. Kambi incorrectly enabled the events for wagering without conditions required by the state, the division said. In Feb. 2022, the division said DraftKings took pre-season NFL bets involving specific players but did not give the state specific information on what information was to be included in the bets, drawing 182 wagers worth nearly $7,000 that were later voided and refunded to customers. ___ Follow Wayne Parry on X at www.twitter.com/WayneParryAC

As November draws to a close, the Ottawa Senators’ dream of making the playoffs for the first time in eight years seems to be fading. After their embarrassing loss to the Vancouver Canucks on Nov. 23 that extended their current losing streak to five games, they have a record of 8-11-1 for a points percentage (PTS%) of just .425. They now sit just one point ahead of the lowly Montreal Canadiens in the Atlantic Division and are five points out of a wild card entry into the postseason. Ever believers, many of the Senators’ faithful say that after just 20 games it’s too early to throw in the towel on this campaign. President of hockey operations and general manager Steve Staios echoed these feelings saying in a postgame interview on Nov. 20 after his squad’s loss to the Edmonton Oilers that, “I don’t think this is a dire situation for this group at all. The team looks and feels like not only a competitive team, but a playoff looking team.” After the loss to the Canucks, Staios may well have changed his tune. Here’s why. Senators Dig Deep Hole for Themselves in November To punch a ticket to the NHL’s postseason with a wild card, teams generally need to have a PTS% of around .600. For the Senators, this means in their remaining 62 games they’ll need to rack up at least 81 points – and that’s .656 hockey. To put that into perspective, the Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers notched a PTS% in the regular season last year of .671. Does anyone really believe that from now to the end of the season the Senators can take, on average, between six and seven of every 10 games they play? Nothing they’ve shown to this point in the season suggests they can. What Ailed the Senators in First 20 Games of 2024-25 Season Social media in Ottawa is exploding with explanations of why the Senators have disappointed so far this season. They often start first with goaltending. Starter Linus Ullmark was supposed to have solved Ottawa’s problems between the pipes. Fans now scoff at his save percentage (SV%) of .881 and his goals-against average (GAA) of 3.10. This stings because former Senators’ goalie Joonas Korpisalo , after eight games with the Boston Bruins this season boasts a SV% of .991 and a GAA of 2.38. The Senators are still paying a quarter of his salary in accordance with the terms of the trade that sent him to Boston last summer. Some say Ottawa’s Swedish goalie tandem of Ullmark and Anton Forsberg isn’t the problem at all. They just look bad because of what they say is a crummy D-corps playing in front of them. Exhibit number one is Jake Sanderson, once regarded as a stud on the Ottawa blue line, who all but disappeared in November notching just four assists in the 11 games he’s played. On the season he has a plus/minus of minus-11 – the worst on the team. What makes this hard to swallow is that former Senators’ defenceman Jakob Chychrun, who Ottawa sent to the Washington Capitals in exchange for Nick Jensen and a draft pick, now sports a plus/minus of plus-9 earning a rank of second in the league among defensemen overall. Last season in Ottawa he registered a minus-30. Sanderson is just one symptom of an Ottawa blue line that continues to disappoint. Akin to a beer league squad, Ottawa’s defence on too many nights fails to clear the zone, turns pucks over, allows opposing players to cruise through the neutral zone and enter the D-zone at will and embarrasses themselves getting caught up ice. It’s one of the reasons they now rank 20 th in the league on goals against and their team’s goal differential has slipped to minus-3. As for points, Tim Stutzle, Brady Tkachuk, Drake Batherson, Josh Norris and Claude Giroux are all on track for record-setting seasons. Even so, point production by the bottom-six as a whole has been anemic standing at barely more than a point per game. Veteran forwards including newly acquired Michael Amadio and Nick Cousins are not on track to match their point production of previous seasons. What’s more, Shane Pinto has shown himself to be perfectly average despite the high hopes placed on him at the start of the season. If anyone should know what explains the woeful performance of the Senators to the quarter mark of the season it should be Staios. Yet he’s not sure what’s going on either saying after the loss to the Oilers that, “We’re 8-9-1 and they (opponents) keep scoring for a reason. Do I think we’ve played better than that? Sure. But it’s for us to figure out as a group why that’s our record. That’s what we’re trying to unlock.” Senators’ Turnaround in December Will Be Tough The Senators haven’t won the games they should have in October and November. They simply can’t afford to give up two points as they did in games with weaker opponents like the Buffalo Sabres and Philadelphia Flyers. Yet at the same time they need to be able to steal a win or two from good teams. That’s something they haven’t managed to do in November, with the exception of their win against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Nov. 12. Here’s a look at their opponents in the 13 games they’ll play next month and my assessment of how difficult it will be to win each. In December, six consecutive games are out of town – part of a nine-game road trip the Senators must play because Canadian Tire Centre is hosting the World Junior Championship at the end of the year. In all, eight of 13 games next month are road games. To achieve a PTS% of .600 in December, the Senators would need to win three of the four games I’ve assigned a high probability of them winning. On top of that, they’ll need to take three of the five that I’ve given them 50/50 odds of winning and two of four matchups against teams that I’ve given them little chance of winning. That’s a tall order and still wouldn’t be good enough for them to notch the .600 PTS% on the season as a whole that they’ll probably need to win a wild card spot in the playoffs. To sum it all up, the Senators will need a recovery in December worthy of Lazarus to have a chance at avoiding an early start to their golf season next spring.
