A burden has been lifted off Lora Wood’s shoulders. Lora Wood was one of 39 people who had non-violent convictions pardoned by President Joe Biden on Dec. 12, 2024. For 20 years, the 39-year-old Maxwell, Nebraska resident has been living under the pall of having been convicted of a felony. That limited her career opportunities. It also made her unable to own a firearm, which, as a livestock farmer, created difficulty at times. Wood was one of 39 people who had their non-violent convictions pardoned by U.S. President Joe Biden on Thursday. Biden also commuted the sentences of close to 1,500 people. Wood’s pardon stems from 2004, when she pleaded guilty to possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute. Wood said when she was 19, she got involved with the wrong guy. Wood served one year in federal prison in Illinois and four years under supervised release as part of her plea agreement. Today, Wood said she's happy; living with her husband, Jeremy, and two children. She works as a graphic designer for Pro Printing and Graphics — a printing company owned by her mother-in-law in North Platte — and spends time on the farm. Having been clean for 20 years, Wood remains active in the community. She volunteers helping animals through Paws-itive Partners Humane Society in North Platte. With the humane society, she has organized pet food fundraisers, including Woofstock, an event where people can come with their dogs to a carnival-like atmosphere. She also works with therapy dogs. Wood began applying for a pardon five years ago. As part of her application process, the Federal Bureau of Investigation interviewed her, her family and her employers both present and past. When she got the call on Wednesday, she was moved to tears. “I was really excited,” she said. “This has been one of those things where you don’t have any information. It just came out of the blue.” In a press release, the White House noted Wood’s steady employment and volunteer service. The White House added Wood has been praised for her work ethic and devotion to her children. Although it does not expunge Wood’s conviction, she believes the pardon will give her better job opportunities and access to a firearm, which she said would come in handy if she needs to put down a sick pig at her and her husband’s farm. “Trying to put down a pig without a gun is a very difficult process,” Wood said. “We have to call neighbors to do it for us.” She also said the pardon would allow her to visit nursing homes to help comfort residents with a therapy dog. Wood said her drug conviction prevented her from doing that. There is plenty of ground to traverse, people to talk to, clues to pick up on, issues to report, and interviews to conduct. Reporting also involves observations and listening — for instance, to chatter in various places, such as tea stalls and village kattas (where people gather for conversions) — to gauge the mood. Before the recent Maharashtra Assembly elections , I heard diverse voices and issues across constituencies. Farmers spoke about crop losses, loan waivers, and Minimum Support Price. Young voters said they were frustrated about the job situation. Women spoke about inflation. In urban pockets, religious and caste polarisation, infrastructure issues, and the popularity of a few leaders dominated conversations. But to predict an outcome is a different game altogether. But it is necessary to be cautious in this regard too, as politics always throws up surprises. Elon Musk , the world’s wealthiest man and President-elect Donald Trump’s “first buddy, ” took to his social media platform X to ominously accuse the key witness in Trump’s first impeachment of treason while calling for him to “pay the appropriate penalty.” Musk, who has been tasked by Trump to lead an outside agency on government efficiency named after a meme , took issue on Wednesday with comments made by former National Security Council official Alexander Vindman during an appearance on MSNBC. Vindman, who testified in 2019 that Trump pressured Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to launch an investigation into then-presidential candidate Joe Biden, cited reports that Musk had been engaged in secret conversations with Russian President Vladimir Putin dating back to 2022. He then expressed concerns that Musk, who has federal contracts through his SpaceX, Tesla and Starlink companies, may have shared “state secrets” with Putin. “And [Putin’s] been using the richest man in the world to do his bidding. In some cases, that’s encouraging him probably to support Donald Trump,” Vindman told MSNBC. “That’s not speculation. We see how far in Elon has gone. And then using Twitter as a disinformation platform.” Reacting to a clip of Vindman’s remarks, Musk tweeted : “Vindman is on the payroll of Ukrainian oligarchs and has committed treason against the United States, for which he will pay the appropriate penalty.” According to U.S. Code Title 18 , the penalty for treason — which is defined by the Constitution as levying war against the United States or adhering to the nation’s enemies — is death, or no fewer than five years imprisonment. After Vindman first testified before the House impeachment inquiry about Trump’s actions towards Zelensky, Fox News hosts and GOP lawmakers said he “has an affinity for Ukraine” while suggesting he was simultaneously advancing Ukrainian interests while working in the White House. A TRAVEL expert has revealed the clever packing hack that stops your clean clothes getting dirty on holiday. Travellers are always eager to find new hacks that allow them to pack their luggage more efficiently before jetting off on holiday . One of the biggest annoyances for those heading abroad is keeping dirty clothes separate from clean ones while on holiday. It goes without saying that our bags often become a jumbled mess by the end of the trip. However, a well-seasoned flyer has shared one method which could help stop this headache for holidaygoers . According to Samantha Hamilton, an expert traveller who runs the New England Wanderlust blog, there is a correct way to pack your dirty laundry when traveling. H amilton, who has been travelling for over 10 years, told holidaygoers: "Keep your dirty laundry in a separate packing cube." The travel whizz says that packing cubes have been the most effective way to contain the smell. She also says they are especially handy as they maintain an element of the compression to save space. A specific compression packing cube will help you save space and keep the smells away from clean clothes. Compression packing cubes are great at creating more space in your suitcase as they reduce the room taken up by clothes and other items. Hamilton also advises travellers to “throw a dryer sheet into your dirty laundry cube" to help with bad smells. You might not use a lot of dryer sheets in your normal laundry routine, but pack a few to keep your suitcase from permanently absorbing the scent of every adventure. There is no harm in putting them in your suitcase and also in the packing cube with your dirty laundry. Hamilton says they are her "last line of defence" to stop odours from seeping into the rest of her suitcase. And for longer trips they come in handy even more thanks to taking up no room at all. HELSINKI — China launched the third batch of 18 satellites for the Thousand Sails constellation late Tuesday as the firm behind the project aims for global services in 2025. A Long March 6A rocket lifted off at 11:41 p.m. Eastern, Dec. 4 (0441 UTC, Dec. 5) from Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center, north China. The state-owned Shanghai Academy of Spaceflight Technology (SAST) announced launch success hours later, once all payloads were deployed into their predetermined polar orbits. Aboard were 18 flat panel satellites for the Thousand Sails megaconstellation to provide low Earth orbit communications services. The project is led by Shanghai Spacecom Satellite Technology (SSST). The project is sometimes also referred to as Qianfan and G60 Starlink. The launch followed earlier Thousand Sails/Qianfan constellation satellite launches in August and October this year. The satellites were developed by the Shanghai Microsatellite Engineering Center and are the first generation of Thousand Sails satellites. Spacesail aims to construct a 14,000-satellite constellation, with the aim of having around 600 satellites in orbit by the end of 2025. SSST has garnered substantial support, securing approximately $943 million in funding in early 2024. The company recently reached an agreement with Brazil , which will see Spacesail begin providing services to the county in 2026. The move follows a dispute between Brazil and the X social media platform owned by Elon Musk. The issue saw Brazil’s Supreme Court temporarily freeze the bank accounts of Starlink in the country. The Long March 6A, developed by SAST, is the first and so far only Chinese launcher to bundle a liquid propellant core stage with solid propellant side boosters. It is capable of launching 4,500 kilograms of payload to a 700-kilometer sun-synchronous orbit The rocket has, despite successful launches, suffered issues with its upper stage fragmenting . The launch which carried the first 18 Qianfan satellites broke up into a cloud suspected to number more than 700 pieces of orbital debris. SAST has so far not responded to requests for comment. The satellites from the previous launch, in October, have yet to be cataloged by U.S. Space Force space domain awareness. There are also concerns over the apparent brightness of the Qianfan satellites and their potential impact on astronomy. The launch was China’s 62nd orbital launch attempt of 2024. It is China’s fifth launch since November 27, when the first enhanced Zhuque-2 rocket lifted off from Jiuquan, northwest China. This was followed by two experimental satellites on the first Long March 12 , the launch of likely early warning satellite TJS-13 on the 100th Long March 3B, and the launch of the first enhanced Kuaizhou-1A solid rocket from Xichang. China’s national record for launch attempts in a calendar year is 67, set in 2023. The country had stated plans to launch around 100 times across 2024.
Qatar tribune Agencies Bitcoin soared above $100,000 for the first time on Thursday, marking a widely anticipated milestone that is hailed even by skeptics amid coming-of-age for cryptocurrencies – as investors bet on a friendly U.S. administration to cement cryptos’ place in financial markets. The total value of the cryptocurrency market has almost doubled over the year so far to hit a record just shy of $3.8 trillion, according to data provider CoinGecko. By comparison, Apple alone is worth about $3.7 trillion. Bitcoin’s march from the libertarian fringe to Wall Street has minted millionaires, a new asset class, and popularized the concept of “decentralized finance” in a volatile and often controversial period since its creation 16 years ago. Bitcoin has more than doubled in value this year and is up more than 50% in the four weeks since Donald Trump’s sweeping election victory, which also saw a slew of pro-crypto lawmakers being elected to Congress. Once it broke $100,000 in Thursday’s Asian morning, it was soon above $103,000 on its way to an all-time high of $103,619, a surge of about 6% on the day. It was last fetching $101,933. “We’re witnessing a paradigm shift,” said Mike Novogratz, founder and CEO of U.S. crypto firm Galaxy Digital. “Bitcoin and the entire digital asset ecosystem are on the brink of entering the financial mainstream – this momentum is fuelled by institutional adoption, advancements in tokenization and payments, and a clearer regulatory path.” Trump embraced digital assets during his campaign, promising to make the United States the “crypto capital of the planet” and to accumulate a national stockpile of bitcoin. “We were trading basically sideways for about seven months, then immediately after Nov. 5, U.S. investors resumed buying hand-over-fist,” said Joe McCann, CEO and founder of Asymmetric, a Miami digital assets hedge fund. Bitcoin has proven to be a survivor of precipitous downturns. Its move into six-figure territory is a remarkable comeback from a dip below $16,000 in 2022 when the industry was reeling from the collapse of the FTX exchange. Founder Sam Bankman-Fried was subsequently jailed. Analysts say the growing embrace of Bitcoin by big investors this year has been a driving force behind the record-breaking rally. U.S.-listed bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) were approved in January and have been a conduit for large-scale buying, with more than $4 billion streaming into these funds since the election. “Roughly 3% of the total supply of bitcoins that will ever exist have been purchased in 2024 by institutional money,” said Geoff Kendrick, global head of digital assets research at Standard Chartered. “Digital assets, as an asset class, is becoming normalized,” he said. “If you fast forward a number of years on trading floors, you’ll have a sales and trading desk ... which will sit alongside FX and rates and commodities.” It is already becoming increasingly financialised, with the launch of bitcoin futures in 2017 and a strong debut for options on BlackRock’s ETF in November. Crypto-related stocks have soared along with the bitcoin price, with shares in bitcoin miner MARA Holdings and exchange operator Coinbase each up around 65% in November. Software firm Microstrategy, which has repeatedly raised funds to buy Bitcoin and held an aggregate of about 402,100 bitcoins as of Dec. 1, has gained 542% this year. Trump himself unveiled a new crypto business, World Liberty Financial, in September, although details have been scarce. The billionaire Elon Musk, a major Trump ally, is also a proponent of cryptocurrencies. The cryptocurrency industry has been criticized for its massive energy usage, while crypto crime remains a concern, and the underlying technology is yet to deliver a major revolution in how money moves around the globe. Still, as Russian President Vladimir Putin pointed out at an investment conference on Wednesday: “Who can prohibit it? No one.” And its longevity is perhaps a testament to a degree of resilience. “As time goes by, it’s proving itself as part of the financial landscape,” said Shane Oliver, chief economist and head of investment strategy at AMP in Sydney. “I find it very hard to value it ... it’s anyone’s guess.
