SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Building the current crop of artificial intelligence chatbots has relied on specialized computer chips pioneered by Nvidia, which dominates the market and made itself the poster child of the AI boom. But the same qualities that make those graphics processor chips, or GPUs, so effective at creating powerful AI systems from scratch make them less efficient at putting AI products to work. That’s opened up the AI chip industry to rivals who think they can compete with Nvidia in selling so-called AI inference chips that are more attuned to the day-to-day running of AI tools and designed to reduce some of the huge computing costs of generative AI. “These companies are seeing opportunity for that kind of specialized hardware,” said Jacob Feldgoise, an analyst at Georgetown University’s Center for Security and Emerging Technology. “The broader the adoption of these models, the more compute will be needed for inference and the more demand there will be for inference chips.” It takes a lot of computing power to make an AI chatbot. It starts with a process called training or pretraining — the “P” in ChatGPT — that involves AI systems “learning” from the patterns of huge troves of data. GPUs are good at doing that work because they can run many calculations at a time on a network of devices in communication with each other. However, once trained, a generative AI tool still needs chips to do the work — such as when you ask a chatbot to compose a document or generate an image. That’s where inferencing comes in. A trained AI model must take in new information and make inferences from what it already knows to produce a response. GPUs can do that work, too. But it can be a bit like using a sledgehammer to crack a nut. “With training, you’re doing a lot heavier, a lot more work. With inferencing, that’s a lighter weight,” said Forrester analyst Alvin Nguyen. That’s led startups like Cerebras, Groq and d-Matrix as well as Nvidia’s traditional chipmaking rivals — such as AMD and Intel — to pitch more inference-friendly chips as Nvidia focuses on meeting the huge demand from bigger tech companies for its higher-end hardware. D-Matrix was founded in 2019 — a bit late to the AI chip game, as CEO Sid Sheth explained during a recent interview at the company’s headquarters in Santa Clara, California, the same Silicon Valley city that’s also home to AMD, Intel and Nvidia. “There were already 100-plus companies. So when we went out there, the first reaction we got was ‘you’re too late,’” he said. The pandemic’s arrival six months later didn’t help as the tech industry pivoted to focus on software to serve remote work. Now, however, Sheth sees a big market in AI inferencing, comparing that later stage of machine learning to how human beings apply the knowledge they acquired in school. “We spent the first 20 years of our lives going to school, educating ourselves. That’s training, right?” he said. “And then the next 40 years of your life, you kind of go out there and apply that knowledge — and then you get rewarded for being efficient.” The product, called Corsair, consists of two chips with four chiplets each, made by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. — the same manufacturer of most of Nvidia’s chips — and packaged together in a way that helps to keep them cool. The chips are designed in Santa Clara, assembled in Taiwan and then tested back in California. Testing is a long process and can take six months — if anything is off, it can be sent back to Taiwan. D-Matrix workers were doing final testing on the chips during a recent visit to a laboratory with blue metal desks covered with cables, motherboards and computers, with a cold server room next door. While tech giants like Amazon, Google, Meta and Microsoft have been gobbling up the supply of costly GPUs in a race to outdo each other in AI development, makers of AI inference chips are aiming for a broader clientele. Forrester’s Nguyen said that could include Fortune 500 companies that want to make use of new generative AI technology without having to build their own AI infrastructure. Sheth said he expects a strong interest in AI video generation. “The dream of AI for a lot of these enterprise companies is you can use your own enterprise data,” Nguyen said. “Buying (AI inference chips) should be cheaper than buying the ultimate GPUs from Nvidia and others. But I think there’s going to be a learning curve in terms of integrating it.” Feldgoise said that, unlike training-focused chips, AI inference work prioritizes how fast a person will get a chatbot’s response. He said another whole set of companies is developing AI hardware for inference that can run not just in big data centers but locally on desktop computers, laptops and phones. Better-designed chips could bring down the huge costs of running AI to businesses. That could also affect the environmental and energy costs for everyone else. Sheth says the big concern right now is, “are we going to burn the planet down in our quest for what people call AGI — human-like intelligence?” It’s still fuzzy when AI might get to the point of artificial general intelligence — predictions range from a few years to decades. But, Sheth notes, only a handful of tech giants are on that quest. “But then what about the rest?” he said. “They cannot be put on the same path.” Get local news delivered to your inbox!
Rudy Giuliani in a courtroom outburst accuses judge in assets case of being unfair, drawing a rebuke107th Attack Wing leaders are betting a trailer outfitted with an $88,000 gaming system will help the New York Air Guard unit recruit new airmen in 2025. The goal, according to the 107th’s Recruiting Flight Chief Tech. Sgt. Kenneth Chudoba, is to get young people excited about the wing’s mission. The simulator and trailer combination is modeled on a system the Air Force also uses for recruiting, Chudoba said. The new simulator is comprised of an 86-inch 4K LG monitor, a gaming PC with a Core i9 14900K processor and an RTX4090 GPU, and a Digital Combat Simulator developed by Eagle Dynamics. This is hooked up to Marada cockpit throttles, yoke, and peddles, and a BOSE sound system and HTC VIDE Focux 3 virtual reality goggles complete the setup. According to Chudoba, while guests are flying the simulator, recruiters can speak to other people lined up waiting their turn. The trailer will provide a more inviting environment to ask questions as opposed to a traditional simulator set up on a tabletop, he said. In 2024, the wing recruited 104 airmen — both new recruits and prior service personnel — which is only the second time in the past 20 years this number of airmen have joined the 107th, Chudoba explained. The goal is to keep the momentum going and keep bringing in new recruits to the wing, which has a current strength of about 740 airmen. Col. Andrew Carlson, the commander of the 107th and a former F-15 pilot, praised the simulator’s attention to detail. “I was really impressed with the amount of realism; it was way cool and quite frankly a lot of fun!” he said. The 107th recruiters acquired the trailer in 2022. It was wrapped with both 107th and Air National Guard decals. It was taken to events to act as a backdrop and billboard, with heat and air conditioning. “We loved the outside of the trailer, we couldn’t just have it be a billboard on wheels,” Chudoba said. The wing worked with vendors to put together the simulator system. Two 4K LG monitors, gaming chairs, and Xbox consoles are also installed so that two other guests can check out those systems as well. Recruiting’s goal is to help increase the enlistments across the wing, and let the public know that they can serve local and live local. Hopefully they will hit their first event in January, Chudoba said. “This interactive exhibit will help get the word out about the amazing careers the Air National Guard can provide,” said Chudoba.

Genesis Bryant scores 27 and No. 19 Illinois women beat UMES 75-55 in Music City Classic
Ruben Amorim impressed with Arsenal’s corners after first defeat as Man Utd bossNASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Genesis Bryant scored 27 points, Kendall Bostic secured her third double-double this season with 12 points and 11 rebounds and No. 19 Illinois beat Maryland Eastern Shore 75-55 on Tuesday in the Music City Classic. Illinois (6-0) moved to 6-0 for the second time under third-year coach Shauna Green. Illinois scored the opening nine points of the game and took a double-digit lead for good with 2:11 left in the first quarter when Makira Cook made a 3-pointer to begin 13-2 run. UMES scored 13 straight points midway through the second quarter to get as close as 32-22, but Cook answered with a basket to end Illinois' three-minute drought. Bryant finished the first half with 14 points and Cook added 13 to help Illinois build a 43-26 lead. The pair combined to make seven of Illinois’ 14 field goals. UMES was 9 of 36 (25%), including 0 of 7 from 3-point range at halftime. Illinois also got 15 points from Cook and a career-high 11 rebounds from Brynn Shoup-Hill. Bryant, who reached double figures in the first quarter, scored 20-plus for the first time this season. Zamara Haynes led UMES (4-3) with 20 points and Mahogany Lester added 14. Illinois stays in Nashville to play No. 14 Kentucky on Wednesday. UMES travels to Piscataway, New Jersey, to face Georgia Southern in the Battle on the Banks on Friday. The NFL has made the final decision on Houston Texans linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair who was recently suspended by the league. Per NFL reporter Ari Meirov, the NFL has upheld Al-Shaair’s three-game suspension. He will miss games against the Miami Dolphins, Kansas City Chiefs and Baltimore Ravens. Al-Shaair will be eligible to return in Week 18 against the Tennessee Titans. Al-Shaair was suspended after hitting Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence while sliding to the ground. Lawrence was carted off the field, and Al-Shaair was ejected from the game. On Monday, Al-Shaair issued an apology to Lawrence. “I’ve always played the game as hard as I could. Never with the intent to harm anyone and anybody that knows me knows that,” Al-Shaair wrote, via X . “My goal is to hit you as hard as I can then I pray you’re still able to get up and play the next play. And when the game is over go home to your family unharmed because it’s not personal it’s just competition! We both are trying to do the same thing which is provide for our families! I genuinely didn’t see him sliding until it was too late. And it all happens in the blink of an eye. DeMeco Ryans shows support for Azeez Al-Shaair “To Trevor I genuinely apologize to you for what ended up happening. Before the game we spoke and I told you how it was great to see you back out on the field and wished you well. I would never want to see any player hurt because of a hit I put on them, especially one that’s deemed ‘late’ or ‘unnecessary.’ To the rest of his teammates I can definitely understand you having his back and defending him in a situation like that.” Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans seemed to place the blame on Trevor Lawrence. “ With the entire Azeez situation, we stand behind Azeez,” Ryans said, via KPRC2 . “It’s two-fold. A lot of quarterbacks in this day and age, they try to take advantage of the rule or they slide late and they try to get an extra yard. You’re a defender, a lot of onus is on the defender. Whether it’s on the sideline or whether it’s on the quarterback, you don’t need what a guy is thinking. You don’t know if a guy is staying up and he’s continuing to run. You don’t know, and then you get a late slide and you hit the guy.” This article first appeared on 5 GOATs and was syndicated with permission.Surging Flyers take aim at Panthers, who may be without top goalieATHENS, Ohio (AP) — AJ Clayton scored 16 points as Ohio beat Robert Morris 84-68 on Saturday. Brayden Long hit hit Logan Ramper with a 28-yard touchdown pass, then Slippery Rock scored on a hook-and-lateral on the ensuing 2-point conversion to knock off top-seeded Kutztown, 25-24 in overtime, in an NCAA Division II playoff second-round game Saturday. Kutztown (11-1) scored earlier on its overtime possession on Luke Maxwell’s 2-yard run. Slippery Rock (11-1) trailed by eight with 1:53 left when Kam Kruzelyak caught an 8-yard touchdown pass from Long, who then hit Ramper with a successful 2-point pass to tie the game. Long threw for 288 yards and Ramper caught nine passes for 120 yards. Steven Burkhardt rushed for 82 yards and a touchdown for Kutztown. Cal (Pa.) 34, Ashland 33 — Demonte Martin scored on a 48-yard touchdown pass from Davis Black with 3:49 left in the game as Cal (Pa.) (10-2) overcame a 12-point fourth-quarter deficit to beat Ashland (9-4) in the second round of the NCAA Division II tournament. Black threw for 275 yards and three touchdowns and ran for another TD. Trevor Bycznski threw for 319 yards and three touchdowns for Ashland, but he was also picked off three times. The Vulcans will face Slippery Rock in next week’s third-round matchup. Division III Second round Carnegie Mellon 24, Centre College 15 — Brendan McCullough caught 10 passes for 109 yards and two touchdowns from Ben Mills as Carnegie Mellon (10-1) beat Centre College (8-3) in the second round of the NCAA Division III tournament. Mills threw for 153 yards. Logan Young had two interceptions for the Tartans defense, which forced four Centre turnovers overall and set a team record by limiting Centre to minus-33 rushing yards. Jack Gohmann tossed for 402 yards and a touchdown on a 38-for-63 passing effort for Centre while Blake Busson caught 13 passes for 212 yards and Dant Bowling had 10 receptions for 121 yards and a touchdown. Carnegie Mellon advances to play Mount Union in next Saturday’s third round. Johns Hopkins 17, Grove City 14 — Jase Herrick recovered a punt blocked by Shay Aitken in the end zone with 3:43 left in the game to give Johns Hopkins (10-1) the NCAA Division III second-round win over Grove City (9-2). Grove City hit the left upright with nine seconds left on a 27-yard game-tying field goal attempt. James Rinello threw for 264 yards and a touchdown and added a rushing TD for Johns Hopkins, which will face DePauw in next week’s third round. Grove City’s Logan Pfeuffer threw for 273 yards and a touchdown to Scott Fraser, who had 19 receptions for 231 yards. Randolph-Macon 38, Washington & Jefferson 22 — In the second round of the NCAA Division III tournament, Mitchell Johnson rushed for 115 yards and two touchdowns as Randolph-Macon (10-1) overcame an early 14-point deficit to defeat Washington & Jefferson (9-2). The Presidents went ahead on two first-quarter touchdown runs by quarterback Jacob Pugh before Randolph-Macon scored the next 38 points. Dante Casciola threw for 137 yards and two touchdowns for Randolph-Macon while Jason Moore caught four passes for 125 yards and a touchdown. Pugh threw for 271 yards and a touchdown to Jacob Macosko, who had 11 receptions for 140 yards. Randolph-Macon matches up against Salisbury next Saturday in the third round.
Premier League leaders Liverpool had their advantage cut to seven points as Fabian Schar's late equaliser earned Newcastle United a thrilling 3-3 draw at St James' Park. Chelsea stay second after a 5-1 win over Southampton, ahead by way of goal difference on Arsenal, who beat Manchester United 2-1, while Manchester City are fourth after a 3-nil win over Nottingham Forest. Newcastle twice led but Mohamed Salah's brace looked like sealing victory for Arne Slot's side, only for a sliding Schar to punish a rare mistake by Liverpool keeper Caoimhin Kelleher in the 90th minute. Until Schar's late intervention the night was once again all about the unstoppable Salah who has now scored and assisted in 37 Premier League games in his career -- a new record. The Egyptian guided in substitute Trent Alexander-Arnold's pass in the 68th minute after Anthony Gordon had restored Newcastle's lead from Alexander Isak's pass. Salah then struck the crossbar with a wonderfully improvised effort but was not to be denied as he produced a silky turn in the area to fire a shot past Nick Pope in the 83rd minute. The 32-year-old has now scored in seven successive Premier League games and moved ahead of Manchester City's Erling Haaland at the top of this season's chart with 13 goals. Liverpool have 35 points from 14 games. Chelsea beat Southamption Chelsea were impressive in their 5-1 win at bottom club Southampton, with the home side having Jack Stephens sent off before half time for a hair-pull on Marc Cucurella. Chelsea took the lead in the seventh minute through Axel Disasi's header but Joe Aribo drew Southampton level four minutes later before a goalkeeping howler allowed Christopher Nkunku in to put the visitors back ahead. Noni Madueke extended Chelsea's lead 11 minutes from the break and despite the red card for Stephens, the visitors had to wait until the 76th minute before Cole Palmer added a fourth and three minutes from time Jadon Sancho rounded off the win. Southampton's struggles were compounded by Stephens' moment of madness when he pulled Cucurella's hair at a corner kick, with the defender shown the red card six minutes from the break. Arsenal beat Manchester United Jurrien Timber and William Saliba both scored from corners to give Arsenal a 2-0 victory over Manchester United at the Emirates Stadium, ending Ruben Amorim's unbeaten start. The Gunners threatened from set pieces but little else in a strangely subdued first half, with Thomas Partey unable to direct a dangerous Declan Rice corner that missing defender Gabriel would surely have converted. But the hosts took the lead from another Rice corner in the 54th minute, Timber heading in from a tight angle, before Partey's header from a Bukayo Saka delivery bounced off Saliba and in after 73 minutes. Arsenal's victory puts them third behind Chelsea on goal difference, with 28 points from 14 games -- but with the gap to Liverpool now seven points. Amorim's first loss as United manager left them 11th on 19 points. Manchester City beat Nottingham Forest Manchester City's Kevin De Bruyne bagged one goal and set up another in his first start in more than two months as City outclassed Nottingham Forest 3-0 to end their four-game losing run in the Premier League. Bernardo Silva and Jeremy Doku also scored to help end City's seven-match winless streak across all competitions, and lift Pep Guardiola's men fourth in the table with Forest sixth. "We needed it, the club, the players, everyone needed to win," Guardiola said. "The most important thing, of course, was to break this routine of don't win games, and finally we won." De Bruyne had not started since suffering an abdominal injury in September and his presence was immediately felt as he helped put City on the scoresheet in the eighth minute when Ilkay Gundogan lifted in a cross which the Belgian headed towards goal and Silva poked the ball home from close range. De Bruyne scored himself in the 31st minute when he latched on to a pass from Doku and fired home from just inside the 18-yard box. Doku all but put the game away in the 57th minute when he met a pinpoint long ball from Erling Haaland, cut inside his man and lashed it into the far corner. In other matches, Everton beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 4-0 at Goodison Park, and Aston Villa won at home, 3-1 over Brentford. - Reuters
The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has named Chief Tony Okocha its new chairman. Naija News understands that Okocha, who previously served as the Caretaker Committee Chairman of the party, was elected unopposed along with other executive members during the state delegate congress held in Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers State, on Saturday. The congress, which utilized a voice vote for the election process, was overseen by Dr Adoye Omalez, representing the party’s national chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje. Following the event, Chief Victor Giadom, the APC National Vice Chairman for the South-South region, praised the party delegates for their orderly conduct during the congress. Giadom emphasized that the peaceful nature of the congress reflects the unity and cohesion of the APC in Rivers State, urging party members to rally behind the new executive to advance the party’s objectives. In his inaugural address, the newly elected opposition party chairman asserted that the APC aims to assume control of the state government by 2027. Okocha also expressed that his election dispels the notion that the APC lacks unity and cannot hold a peaceful election. He commended President Bola Tinubu for his significant accomplishments in office, particularly the recommencement of petroleum production at the Port Harcourt Refinery, and affirmed the party’s commitment to achieving success in future elections in Rivers State. “If you know me very well, I’m an emotional person. Our joy is that our members came on their own volition. Nobody cajoled anybody to come, nobody bamboozled anybody to come here for the state primary election. “They came to show their love for the All Progressives Congress. I like to reassure you I’m sure you are seeing the indices and the variables already. “Those who said APC cannot conduct elections lied. APC will conduct and win elections and be in charge of government in Rivers State. Our business with you supporting us is to ensure that we route out a rudderless government in Rivers State. “By the year 2027 God keeping us alive, we will have an election in Rivers State and our target with you is to help us so that APC takes the reign of governance in Rivers State,” Okocha stated. Okocha added that with the mandate given to him and other elected executive officials, the party is set to capture the state in 2027. He said: “From Assembly, local government areas, National Assembly, and governorship election, APC will win in Rivers state and also ensure that we return the hero of our time, President Bola Tinubu. Let me again use this opportunity to say to Nigerians that we are on cause. The APC is on cause in Nigeria. I’m sure you have watched or you have heard what happened at the Port Harcourt Refinery some days ago. This is the tip of the iceberg that you will begin to see. “We have told you many times that Rome was not built in a day. That the day you plant a seed is not the day you will harvest it. So in less than two years, we have started up and running. The President has also directed that the Kaduna and Warri refineries should be on the same speed as the Port Harcourt Refinery. So when we can achieve this I’m sure the problems of Nigeria will be half solved. “So let me say it to all of us, particularly my colleagues here, it’s one family. I want to assure you of the appreciation of APC in Rivers State that we will come up with the best for the interest of all of us. I want to thank the delegation from the National who have come here and dutifully and profoundly led this process to this right. “Let me on behalf of the party thank you for your courage, dexterity for the love you have for the party. For this reason, you have left all that you are doing to come to Port Harcourt to superintendent this election to its logical conclusion. We would not have succeeded in concluding this process if INEC had not come to preside over this election. Of course, it’s their responsibility to preside over party primary elections. The leader of the delegation is no other person than the leader of INEC in the state he came here himself.” Other elected positions during the state delegates congress were that of the Deputy Chairman of the party, the State Secretary, the Publicity Secretary, the State Auditor, the State women leader, the Youth leader, the legal advisor and Zonal leaders of the party in the three senatorial districts of the state.
