DALLAS (AP) — The championship vision that led Nathan Eovaldi to sign with Texas as a free agent two years ago is the same one that brought him back to the Rangers. A World Series title in his first season was followed by a losing record this year. “I believe in the guys in the group that we have. We were able to do it in ‘23. I don’t feel a lot has changed,” Eovaldi said Friday, a day after finalizing a $75 million, three-year contract . “We had a down year last year, but I've said it before, you learn a lot from losing seasons.” Eovaldi had declined a $20 million player option to become a free agent again and reaching an agreement during the winter meetings in Dallas. Texas also acquired slugging corner infielder Jake Burger in a swap with Miami. Burger had fallen asleep before getting a call late Tuesday night that he had been traded to Texas, where his family was already planning to move after the October birth of a daughter with Down syndrome. “The other city that is really good other than Nashville in terms of children's hospital and resources for her Downs is in Dallas," Burger said. “Not just from the baseball spectrum, from the life aspect as well ... I feel like it was meant to be, and we couldn’t be more more excited about that.” In the Nashville area, Burger lives close to Rangers manager Bruce Bochy, whom he plans to visit with soon. His former Marlins manager, Skip Schumaker , was hired last month by the Rangers as as a senior adviser for baseball operations, and Luis Urueta, Miami’s bench coach the past two seasons, recently joined Bochy’s on-field coaching staff for 2025. Burger and Rangers pitcher Dane Dunning were once roommates in the Chicago White Sox organization. Burger hit .250 with 29 home runs and 76 RBIs in 137 games for the Marlins last season, when he started 59 games at third base and 50 starts at first. He was with the White Sox in Texas when he got traded to Miami on Aug. 1, 2023, and four days later hit his first homer with the Marlins at Globe Life Field. When the Rangers made the title run in 2023, Eovaldi was 5-0 with a 2.95 ERA in six postseason starts. He was the winning pitcher in their World Series-clinching Game 5 at Arizona. He was also part of Boston’s 2018 title. Eovaldi was 12-8 this year with a 3.80 ERA in 29 starts, the last seven scoreless innings in the regular-season finale. He is 24-13 with a 3.72 ERA in 54 starts for Texas the past two seasons. The new deal for the Texas native, who who turns 35 in February, includes a $12 million signing bonus, half payable on Nov. 15, 2026, and the rest on Jan. 15, 2028, and salaries of $18 million next season, $25 million in 2026 and $20 million in 2027. He gets a full no-trade provision. After being welcomed back by Chris Young, the Rangers president of baseball operations, the pitcher said he never felt like he really left. The Rangers stayed in contact throughout the process after he declined his option Nov. 4. “Kind of listening to the market and everything, I’m extremely happy to be back. I’m glad we were we were able to make it all work out,” Eovaldi said. “We had a lot of teams reach out right away and we were in contact with most them across the league. Ultimately we were able to make it back here.” AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/mlbAn ugly scene in the aftermath of Saturday's rivalry game between Michigan and Ohio State resulted in players from both sides being pepper sprayed by police. After the Wolverines' 13-10 upset of the Buckeyes, UM players attempted to plant their flag at midfield of The Horseshoe — leading to a brawl between the two schools. Officers at the stadium quickly got involved to try to break up the skirmish and some appeared to take things too far: Video surfaces appearing to show police pepper spray players after Ohio State/Michigan game. Liquid appears to spray around the 36-second mark. Ohio State player is then immediately in pain. pic.twitter.com/kpu1OuKSOJ Fans couldn't believe the viral video. "OSU has gotta be the worst in the world," a user said. "Y'all get worked and don't show up then your PD pepper spray the victors as they celebrate. Shameless but not surprising." "That's crazy man... big payout coming," another replied. "We are out here pepper spraying 20 year olds in Columbus? Over a flag plant? They do realized Texas planted one in Ann Arbor earlier this year right?" a fan asked. "Sad [expletive] losers #GoBlue." "ENTIRE STATE OF OHIO IS GARBAGE FOR THIS....WTF Man. Loser [expletive] cops. ZERO NEED FOR THIS." "Ohio State also needs to be disciplined for this," another person commented. "Unacceptable." "Why is this necessary?" "Well at least it was Ohio State too. Thought it was only Michigan players. Would have looked even worse," another person commented. Jason Mowry/Getty Images Michigan running back Kalel Mullings appeared to sum it up best in his postgame interview with FOX's Jenny Taft: "You hate to see stuff like that after the game. That's just bad for the sport, bad for college football... They gotta learn how to lose man. We had 60 minutes — we had four quarters to do all that fighting. And now people want to talk and fight. That's wrong." Related: Michigan Players Were Pepper Sprayed During Ohio State BrawlNoneUCF coach Gus Malzahn reportedly resigning to take Florida State OC job

Aidan O'Connell shows in loss to Chiefs that he is the Raiders' QB for the rest of season HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) — Aidan O'Connell might not be Mr. Right for the Raiders, but he is Mr. Right Now. Mark Anderson, The Associated Press Nov 30, 2024 2:37 PM Nov 30, 2024 3:05 PM Share by Email Share on Facebook Share on X Share on LinkedIn Print Share via Text Message Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Aidan O'Connell (12) calls a play at the line of scrimmage against the Kansas City Chiefs during the first half of an NFL football game in Kansas City, Mo., Friday, Nov. 29, 2024. (AP Photo/Charlie Riedel) HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) — Aidan O'Connell might not be Mr. Right for the Raiders, but he is Mr. Right Now. He did enough in Friday's 19-17 loss at Kansas City to show that Las Vegas' quarterback job will be his for the rest of the season — barring, that is, another injury. O'Connell didn't look like a quarterback who hadn't played in nearly six weeks because of a broken thumb . Plus, the Raiders had a short week to prepare for the Chiefs, meaning O'Connell only went through a series of walk-through practices. Even so, he completed 23 of 35 passes for 340 yards, including touchdown passes of 33 yards to tight end Brock Bowers and 58 yards to wide receiver Tre Tucker. He didn't throw any interceptions. “Thought he competed,” coach Antonio Pierce said Saturday morning. “I thought for what we knew we were getting with Spags (Kansas City defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo) and that defense, that he stood in the pocket, made some tough throws, took some hits, took the shots down the field like we wanted. We had some opportunities to take shots down the field, he threw them. And I thought our skill guys did a hell of a job competing and making some really good plays for us.” O'Connell's performance would've shined even more if not for the Raiders' final offensive play. He led the Raiders from their 8-yard line to the Chiefs 32 with 15 seconds left. The plan was for O'Connell to take the snap and throw the ball away to run off a few more seconds, then send Daniel Carlson out for the potential winning field goal without giving Patrick Mahomes enough time to mount one of his signature comebacks. But rookie center Jackson Powers-Johnson snapped the ball before O'Connell was expecting it, and the Chiefs recovered to secure another close, last-minute victory. The Raiders were called for illegal shift, which Kansas City declined. But there was some question about whether officials intended to call a false start instead. Though that infraction would have cost Las Vegas 5 yards, the pre-snap penalty still would've given Carlson a shot at the field goal. Pierce said his team heard an official's whistle before the snap, and that will be included in the Raiders' report to the NFL. “We do that every game,” Pierce said. “Typically, anywhere from three to five questions, and then we’ll get a letter within 24 to 36 hours, and we’ll read it and learn from it.” What’s working Bowers had another sensational game. He was targeted 14 times, catching 10 passes for 140 yards. For the season, he has 84 receptions for 884 yards and four TDs, making him a strong contender for Offensive Rookie of the Year. “We’re seeing double-teams and them really shifting their zone to him, and I don’t really think it matters,” Pierce said. “I think we've got a really special player on our hand.” What needs help The Raiders need to do better on first and second downs to set up more favorable third-down conversions. They have faced 47 third downs from 7 to 10 yards, tied with the Dallas Cowboys for fifth most. Las Vegas' conversion rate on those plays is 36.2%, which actually is favorable compared to the rest of the league, but the Raiders are still creating too many of those situations. Stock up Las Vegas made life difficult for Mahomes, sacking him five times. And it wasn't just Maxx Crosby bringing the heat. Four players had at least one-half sack, including K’Lavon Chaisson, who had 1 1/2. It was a season-high total for the Raiders, and they have taken down the opposing quarterback in 30 consecutive games, the third-longest active streak. Stock down Carlson is usually money, but he missed field goals from 56, 55 and 58 yards. Hardly chip shots, but he is capable of converting from those distances. He had made 30 of 38 field goals from 50-plus yards entering the game, with a career long of 57 yards. Injuries WR DJ Turner injured his knee in the second half. Key number 12 — The Raiders are one of three teams to fall behind double digits in each of their first 12 games of a season. The others were the 1986 Indianapolis Colts and 1972 New England Patriots. Dobbins and Alohi Gilman are placed on injured reserve by Chargers Nov 30, 2024 1:32 PMKeith Jones has established himself as a staple in Philadelphia’s hockey, and the greater sports scene. A veteran of parts of nine NHL seasons, the Brantford, Ontario-native went on to have a successful career in both Philadelphia and national media outlets as a television and radio broadcaster. The respect he garnered from the hockey world, coupled with his extensive knowledge of the game, opened the door for the former right-winger to accept a position with the Philadelphia Flyers’ front office in 2023. Juniors Jones played three seasons of junior-level hockey in Canada before being selected by the Washington Capitals 141st overall in 1988. In two seasons, between 1985 and 1987, with the Paris Mounties of the now-defunct Niagara & District Junior C Hockey League (NDJCHL), he appeared in 60 games, recording 116 points and 197 penalty minutes. The following campaign, he joined the Niagara Falls Canucks of the Golden Horseshoe Junior Hockey League (GHL), a league that ceased operations in 2007. In 40 games, he recorded 130 points (50 goals and 80 assists) and 113 penalty minutes. This offensive breakout season caught the attention of NHL scouts and led to Jones being drafted by the Capitals. Western Michigan University Jones played four seasons with Western Michigan University. He joined the Broncos leading up to the 1988-89 season. In his freshman campaign, he appeared in 37 games, recording nine goals, 12 assists, and 65 penalty minutes. He only got better as his college career progressed. He racked up 37 points during the 1989-90 season, 49 during the 1990-91 campaign, and a college career-high 56 points during his senior season. During his fourth and final campaign, the 1991-92 season, his 25 goals, 31 assists, and 77 penalty minutes served as a strong indicator that Jones would have a shot at the NHL. His excellent play during this campaign earned him a spot on the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) First All-Star Team. Following the conclusion of the college hockey season he made his professional debut with the Capitals’ American Hockey League (AHL)-affiliate, the Baltimore Skipjacks. Washington Capitals Jones joined the Capitals’ big league roster at age 24. In parts of five seasons with Washington, he appeared in 258 games between 1992 and 1996. The Capitals made the postseason four times during his tenure. His best season with Washington came during the 1993-94 campaign when he recorded 35 points (16 goals and 19 assists), 149 penalty minutes, and a plus-4 rating in 68 games. During the Capitals’ playoff run, he appeared in 11 games. The seventh-seed Capitals upset the second-seeded Pittsburgh Penguins in the Eastern Conference quarterfinals (4-2). Washington failed to pull off another postseason upset in the next round, as their season came to an end at the hands of the number-one seed New York Rangers in the semifinals (4-1). Over the next two seasons, Jones compiled a total of 61 points and 168 penalty minutes. During the 1996-97 campaign, he played in 11 games for the Capitals before being dealt to the Colorado Avalanche. Colorado Avalanche Jones joined an absolutely stacked Avalanche team on Nov. 2, 1996 when the Capitals dealt him with a first-round pick (Scott Parker) and a fourth-round pick ( Krys Barch ) in the 1998 Draft for Curtis Leschyshyn and Chris Simon . Over parts of three seasons in Colorado, Jones played with some of the franchise’s greats including Patrick Roy, Joe Sakic, and Peter Forsberg . In 67 games during the 1996-97 campaign, Jones scored 23 goals, tallied 20 assists, and recorded 105 penalty minutes. His plus-5 rating was a testament to the impact the left-shot forward had on a team that fell to the eventual Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings in the Western Conference Final (4-2). In six playoff games, Jones had three goals and three assists. In the following campaign, Jones appeared in only 23 games for the Avalanche and four with their then-AHL affiliate, the Hershey Bears. His playing time was cut short due to a knee injury. With Colorado, he recorded 10 points and 22 penalty minutes in these limited appearances. In seven 1998 postseason games, he was pointless, recording 13 penalty minutes. The Avalanche ended the season on a disappointing note, falling to the Edmonton Oilers in a hard-fought seven-game Western Conference Quarterfinals matchup. Jones played in 12 games for the Avalanche before heading east to Philadelphia. In these limited appearances for the eventual 1999 Western Conference Final runners-up, he had four points (two goals and two assists) and 20 penalty minutes in 12 games. Prior to the trade, Jones was getting back into his offensive flow, ending his time in Colorado with a plus-6 rating. Philadelphia Flyers Jones’ career with the Flyers began on Nov. 12, 1998, when he was acquired from Colorado for Shjon Podein. In 66 games with Philadelphia, he scored 18 goals and tallied 31 assists. His 78 penalty minutes and plus-29 rating established the new winger’s popularity amongst fans and teammates alike. Jones slapped on another three points (two goals and one assist) and 14 penalty minutes in six games to his statistical totals that postseason, as the Flyers fell to the Toronto Maple Leafs in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals (4-2). Jones had another quality season with the Flyers during the 1999-00 season. In 57 regular season games, he had nine goals, 16 assists, and 82 penalty minutes. In the postseason, Jones’ six points and 14 penalty minutes in 18 games helped the Flyers in their playoff run. In the Eastern Conference Final, the Flyers squared off against the rival New Jersey Devils. In Game 2 of the seven-game series, Jones had an assist on Daymond Langkow’s game-winning goal. New Jersey went on to take the classic series 4-3. Jones played his final string of NHL games during the 2000-01 season, appearing in just eight before a knee injury forced him to hang up his skates at age 34. His official retirement from hockey came on Nov. 21, 2000. His time away from the game did not last long, as Jones’ popularity as a player translated well into a career in the broadcasting field. Media Soon after his retirement from hockey, Jones began his second career as a hockey and sports analyst. Between 2000 and 2023, he served as an analyst for Flyers telecasts on NBC Sports Philadelphia. His popularity as an analyst in Philadelphia helped him to get work on national hockey broadcasts for NBC and TNT. In these broadcaster roles, he was able to cover the NHL Winter Classic and the Stanley Cup Final. Jones was also a member of the popular 94 WIP’s Morning Show in the Philadelphia sports radio market. Hockey Executive Jones was named president of hockey operations for the Flyers on May 11, 2023. In this role, he is considered a valuable part of the club’s ongoing rebuild. With GM Daniel Brière , Jones has playoff-deprived Flyers fans eager to see just what the franchise can do in the near future. The Flying Fijians have discussed about the importance of working together as a unit if they are to maintain Ireland in Sunday’s (Fiji time) Test clash at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin. This was the view of veteran halfback Frank Lomani during a zoom session with the media on Wednesday night. “We spoke about the last few days that Ireland was the number one team in the world a few months ago,” the newly appointed Fijian Drua co-captain said. “At the moment they (Ireland) are so vulnerable that as a team and a group we can counter on that.” Lomani highlighted that they have been training hard under wet conditions throughout the week. “I think we are in good form moving into the weekend,” he said. Lomani said they would need to be cohesive in attack and defence against the Irish who are very structured in their game. “They (Ireland) are still in the top three (world rankings) and if we keep playing the way that we played in the last two games; I think we will do better,” he said. Lomani said it was about time the Flying Fijians should be beating Tier One nations. “If you see the statistics way back, we’ve almost beaten Wales three or four times, it’s always a close contest most of the time. “We almost beat Ireland by one point in 2017, so this team has come a long way,” he said “Now we are starting to realise, we’re getting our confidence going to big games knowing that if we can beat teams like Wales, Australia, England and then we can beat other teams too.” Lomani said the team would need to maintain their discipline if they are to defeat Tier One nations. “Discipline plays a massive role in this game, as long as the players stick together. Trust and stick to the game plan; we are going to be on point. “We are improving, and the law is not only for island teams but for all, so we are just going to abide by it,” Lomani said. “Rugby is not a perfect game; it has an oval ball that can bounce either way, so the thing is we make mistakes. “Ireland hasn’t been playing well as they lost to New Zealand but they almost got beaten last week (by Argentina) so that’s rugby. “That won’t change the way we prepare going into this week and consistency is something that we’ve been talking about, trust and being patient about it.” Outstanding Players Lomani said he was impressed with 18-year-old lock Setareki Turagacoke after scoring on his Test debut against Spain. He described Turagacoke as an enthusiastic player and quick learner. “It’s good to have him especially for coming through the pathway,” he said. “It can be challenging coming into a new environment having players that you used to watch on TV before and being in camp is one of his highlights of his career.” Lomani said Turagacoke journey is a testament to young rugby players that their becoming a Flying Fijian can be a reality. Also, he praised the inclusion of winger Peniasi Dakuwaqa to replace the suspended Semi Radradra. Lomani said Dakuwaqa is an asset to the team as he brings speed to the team’s attack. “Having Dakuwaqa in the squad is a big boost for us. He’s great player, physical and a good player that we’d like to have,” he added. The match kicks-off at 3.10am. Ricky Ponting in shock as Australia’s final day mystery is solvedGrowing up, and to this day, game nights have been a regular activity my family enjoys. Whether it is our annual “Game Day” in the winter season where we all gather for a day of playing our favorite card and board games or trying out new games together when visiting out-of-town family, playing games has been a fun way for my family to bond. Reflecting on all the time my family has spent together playing games, I recognize how strongly it impacted our relationships, without actually realizing it in the moment. Along with strengthening relationships, there are countless hidden benefits that come from family game nights. Focusing on the benefits for children, playing games has a strong influence on a child’s development. Playing games strengthens hand/eye coordination and fine motor skills. Games that are especially good for fine motor skills include Jenga, Operation, and any games that involve rolling dice or shuffling cards. When a child plays games, there is a high likelihood their grades will improve. Games entailing academic elements can help students prepare for and excel in school. Examples of games with academic elements include Uno, Scrabble, and Chutes and Ladders. Problem-solving is another developmental skill that can be improved by playing games. Certain games help with the growth of memorization skills as well as assisting children in solving problems on their own. Examples of games that promote problem-solving include Chess, Trouble, Connect 4, and Monopoly. Additional benefits of game playing include growth in vocabulary and reading skills, building math skills, and encouraging strategic thinking. At school, motivation levels increase, and students have stronger relationships with their peers. Children learn how to take turns, develop patience, practice playing fair, follow rules, and gain the ability to predict outcomes. From watching their family win and lose, children can also develop good sportsmanship. Playing games has benefits for all members of the household. No matter how young a child is, they are positively impacted by this time together. Two- to three-year-olds have the skills for beginner games or to participate some, and infants enjoy the noise of conversation. Games promote family bonding through communication, working together, and making memories. For adults, laughing and playing games can reduce stress and lower blood pressure though the release of endorphins. Not only are games an amazing way to help children develop in all aspects of their lives, spending this time together also creates unforgettable memories you will have forever. While it can be a challenge to add playing games to the mix of work, sports practices, homework, school, and other family commitments, there are creative ways to make time. Some ideas include playing a game right after dinner, scheduling dates in advance, playing games at birthday celebrations, or even working in a short game for ten minutes. Grab a game, your family, and start your own family game night tradition! The benefits will continue for a lifetime.
