The large mysterious drones reported flying over parts of New Jersey in recent weeks appear to avoid detection by traditional methods such as helicopter and radio, according to a state lawmaker briefed Wednesday by the Department of Homeland Security. In a post on the social media platform X, Assemblywoman Dawn Fantasia described the drones as up to 6 feet in diameter and sometimes traveling with their lights switched off. The Morris County Republican was among several state and local lawmakers who met with state police and Homeland Security officials to discuss the spate of sightings that range from the New York City area through New Jersey and westward into parts of Pennsylvania, including over Philadelphia. Dozens of mysterious nighttime flights started last month and have raised growing concern among residents and officials. Part of the worry stems from the flying objects initially being spotted near the Picatinny Arsenal, a U.S. military research and manufacturing facility; and over President-elect Donald Trump’s golf course in Bedminster. Drones are legal in New Jersey for recreational and commercial use, but they are subject to local and Federal Aviation Administration regulations and flight restrictions. Operators must be FAA certified. Most, but not all, of the drones spotted in New Jersey were larger than those typically used by hobbyists. The number of sightings has increased in recent days, though officials say many of the objects seen may have been planes rather than drones. It’s also possible that a single drone has been reported more than once. Gov. Phil Murphy and law enforcement officials have stressed that the drones don’t appear to threaten public safety. The FBI has been investigating and has asked residents to share any videos, photos or other information they may have. Two Republican Jersey Shore-area congressmen, U.S. Reps. Chris Smith and Jeff Van Drew, have called on the military to shoot down the drones. Smith said a Coast Guard commanding officer briefed him on an incident over the weekend in which a dozen drones followed a motorized Coast Guard lifeboat “in close pursuit” near Barnegat Light and Island Beach State Park in Ocean County. Coast Guard Lt. Luke Pinneo told The Associated Press Wednesday “that multiple low-altitude aircraft were observed in vicinity of one of our vessels near Island Beach State Park.” The aircraft weren't perceived as an immediate threat and didn't disrupt operations, Pinneo said. The Coast Guard is assisting the FBI and state agencies in investigating. In a letter to U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, Smith called for military help dealing with the drones, noting that Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst has the capability "to identify and take down unauthorized unmanned aerial systems.” However, Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh told reporters Wednesday that “our initial assessment here is that these are not drones or activities coming from a foreign entity or adversary.” Many municipal lawmakers have called for more restrictions on who is entitled to fly the unmanned devices. At least one state lawmaker proposed a temporary ban on drone flights in the state. “This is something we’re taking deadly seriously. I don’t blame people for being frustrated," Murphy said earlier this week. A spokesman for the Democratic governor said he did not attend Wednesday's meeting. Republican Assemblyman Erik Peterson, whose district includes parts of the state where the drones have been reported, said he also attended Wednesday's meeting at a state police facility in West Trenton. The session lasted for about 90 minutes. Peterson said DHS officials were generous with their time, but appeared dismissive of some concerns, saying not all the sightings reported have been confirmed to involve drones. A message seeking comment was left with the Department of Homeland Security. Most of the drones have been spotted along coastal areas and some were recently reported flying over a large reservoir in Clinton. Sightings also have been reported in neighboring states. James Edwards, of Succasunna, New Jersey, said he has seen a few drones flying over his neighborhood since last month. “It raises concern mainly because there's so much that's unknown,” Edwards said Wednesday. “There are lots of people spouting off about various conspiracies that they believe are in play here, but that only adds fuel to the fire unnecessarily. BRASILIA, Nov 27 (Reuters) - A committee in Brazil's lower chamber of Congress approved a bill on Wednesday that would ban abortion in Brazil in all cases including those currently allowed such as fetal deformation, rape or when the mother's health is in danger. The Constitutional and Legal Affairs Committee, where conservatives have a majority, voted 35-15 to approve a proposal for a constitutional amendment to establish that the inviolability of the right to life applies from the moment of conception and not at birth. The sponsor of the legislation, Chris Tonietto of the right-wing Liberal Party, said the amendment would "ensure that unborn children will enjoy the right to life." The proposed bill will now go to a special committee set up for the issue and discussions are expected to take place early next year. Progressive lawmakers criticized the amendment, calling it a "secular setback" and an attack on women's rights. They said the measure will paralyze research into stem cells and rule out procedures such as in vitro fertilization. "It's a provocation. NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — Three African politicians seeking to head the African Union detailed their plans on Friday for regional security amid conflicts and political coups while strongly advocating for inter-Africa trade among other issues. Raila Odinga of Kenya, Mahamoud Ali Youssouf of Djibouti and Richard Randriamandrato of Madagascar are seeking to be elected as chairperson for the 55-member state African Union. They participated in a two-hour debate Friday in Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa in which they all advocated for two permanent seats for African countries in the U.N. Security Council to effectively represent the continent with the youngest population. Odinga said that two permanent seats with veto power were “a must for Africa” and that this was “only fair” since the continent has more than 50 countries. Randriamandrato urged member states to cease the opportunity and “speak with one voice on the choice of who will represent Africa in the UNSC.” The three are seeking to convince most African countries before the February election to succeed African Union Chairperson Moussa Faki, who has served for two terms. The African Union has faced several challenges that include conflict in member countries and political coups that have seen five member states expelled from the union, making regional security a major theme in Friday’s debate. Youssouf said that regional security could be enhanced if the resources for a regional standby force were increased to reduce the overreliance on foreign partnerships for resources. “When there is no unity of purpose among neighboring countries peace will be compromised,” Youseff said. Randriamandrato encouraged countries to take charge of their internal security while cautioning that foreign military bases should be “a thing of the past” because they “could be a source of conflict.” Despite the continent’s young population of 1.3 billion that is set to double by 2050, regional trade has faced challenges that were addressed in the Friday debate. Odinga said that Africa had a “huge domestic market” that it could leverage on for economic transformation by opening up opportunities for trade between African countries. Youssouf proposed a payment compensation system that would ensure countries don't lose out while trading in different currencies adding, “are we going to have a single currency, why not?” Randriamandrato said that regional economic blocs like the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa had a huge role to play in easing inter-Africa trade. The African Union has several proposed reforms on its structure and leadership aimed at achieving its purpose, and all candidates promised to implement the reforms if elected. Youssouf said that key reforms in the union were facing a funding bottleneck and that “it has to change,” adding that he wouldn't impose it on member states but would “advocate for it.”
Mumbai: The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay has in discussion with companies participating in its upcoming placement season to avoid offering annual packages below ₹ 6 lakh. This comes after the institute recorded its lowest-ever offer of ₹ 4 lakh during the last placement cycle. Last year, 10 students got packages between ₹ 4 lakh and ₹ 6 lakh from seven companies. Phase 1 of the placement season, which begins on December 1, is set to witness a notable shift, with increasing participation from core sector companies and a dip in representation from IT firms. “Last year, we saw fewer IT firms due to a slowdown in bulk hiring, which followed the high demand during the Covid-19 recovery years in 2021 and 2022,” said an official from IIT Bombay, who requested anonymity as they aren’t authorised to speak with the media. To meet students’ evolving needs, IIT Bombay has curated a more targeted selection of recruiters based on student feedback and industry trends. This year, the institute plans to onboard new companies, including startups, and has invited several public sector undertakings (PSUs). Despite challenges in the IT sector, IIT Bombay’s placement office remains optimistic about international hiring. “We have Japanese clients participating and hope to see an increase in foreign offers. However, offers must align with local currency standards or be in USD,” said a student representative. Startups will also play a critical role, with IIT Bombay targeting those operational for at least three to four years. Additionally, some pre-placement offer (PPO) recipients will be allowed to participate in regular placements. Hybrid placement models, which combine in-person and online processes, will continue to cater to company preferences, ensuring flexibility and wider participation. The institute has also expanded its outreach to attract companies from niche sectors such as earth science and environmental science, aligning with growing student interests. “Students have asked for opportunities in these fields, and we’ve responded by inviting relevant companies to participate,” said the official quoted earlier. “We are focused on expanding our client base and ensuring students have access to quality offers across industries.” Over 2,400 students have registered for placements this year, up from 1,400 in 2015-16. Last year, IIT Bombay received 300 PPOs, of which 258 were accepted. “This year’s figures are expected to be similar,” the official added. The student representative emphasised that market demand drives recruitment trends. “Placements depend on the market situation, and while we offer strong student support, there has to be demand from employers. Mumbai: The Reserve Bank of India ( RBI ) injected funds into the banking system as the weighted average call rate, a barometer for short-term borrowing costs, rose 23 basis points above the policy repo rate at 6.73% on Friday. Surplus liquidity in the banking system shrank to ₹84,154.75 crore due to monthly GST outflows. This is akin to a fine-tuning exercise to manage call rates near the repo rate, as monthly tax outflows drew surplus liquidity out of the banking system, money market experts said. The RBI injected funds worth ₹25,000 crore via a variable rate repo auction (VRR) to ensure that recent overseas outflows from local debt and equity do not drive up banks' cost of funds, analysts said. This is the second such auction that the RBI has conducted post its change in stance to neutral from withdrawal of accommodation. On Thursday, surplus liquidity - as measured by absorption of funds by the RBI - dropped to a one-month low of ₹84,154.75 crore, central bank data showed. "The RBI has been very flexible and quick to manage liquidity. I am also expecting some VRR auctions to happen around mid December when there are advance tax outflows," said Vikas Goel, MD and CEO at PNB Gilts . Article content A 7-year-old rivalry between tech leaders Elon Musk and Sam Altman over who should run OpenAI and prevent an artificial intelligence “dictatorship” is now heading to a federal judge as Musk seeks to halt the ChatGPT maker’s ongoing shift into a for-profit company. Recommended Videos Musk, an early OpenAI investor and board member, sued the artificial intelligence company earlier this year alleging it had betrayed its founding aims as a nonprofit research lab benefiting the public good rather than pursuing profits. Musk has since escalated the dispute, adding new claims and asking for a court order that would stop OpenAI’s plans to convert itself into a for-profit business more fully. The world’s richest man, whose companies include Tesla, SpaceX and social media platform X, last year started his own rival AI company, xAI. Musk says it faces unfair competition from OpenAI and its close business partner Microsoft, which has supplied the huge computing resources needed to build AI systems such as ChatGPT. “OpenAI and Microsoft together exploiting Musk’s donations so they can build a for-profit monopoly, one now specifically targeting xAI, is just too much,” says Musk’s filing that alleges the companies are violating the terms of Musk’s foundational contributions to the charity. OpenAI is filing a response Friday opposing Musk’s requested order, saying it would cripple OpenAI’s business and mission to the advantage of Musk and his own AI company. A hearing is set for January before U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers in Oakland. At the heart of the dispute is a 2017 internal power struggle at the fledgling startup that led to Altman becoming OpenAI’s CEO. Musk also wanted the job, according to emails revealed as part of the court case, but grew frustrated after two other OpenAI co-founders said he would hold too much power as a major shareholder and chief executive if the startup succeeded in its goal to achieve better-than-human AI known as artificial general intelligence, or AGI. Musk has long voiced concerns about how advanced forms of AI could threaten humanity. “The current structure provides you with a path where you end up with unilateral absolute control over the AGI,” said a 2017 email to Musk from co-founders Ilya Sutskever and Greg Brockman. “You stated that you don’t want to control the final AGI, but during this negotiation, you’ve shown to us that absolute control is extremely important to you.” In the same email, titled “Honest Thoughts,” Sutskever and Brockman also voiced concerns about Altman’s desire to be CEO and whether he was motivated by “political goals.” Altman eventually succeeded in becoming CEO, and has remained so except for a period last year when he was fired and then reinstated days later after the board that ousted him was replaced. OpenAI published the messages Friday in a blog post meant to show its side of the story, particularly Musk’s early support for the idea of making OpenAI a for-profit business so it could raise money for the hardware and computer power that AI needs. It was Musk, through his wealth manager Jared Birchall, who first registered “Open Artificial Technologies Technologies, Inc.”, a public benefit corporation, in September 2017. Then came the “Honest Thoughts” email that Musk described as the “final straw.” “Either go do something on your own or continue with OpenAI as a nonprofit,” Musk wrote back. OpenAI said Musk later proposed merging the startup into Tesla before resigning as the co-chair of OpenAI’s board in early 2018. Musk didn’t immediately respond to emailed requests for comment sent to his companies Friday. Asked about his frayed relationship with Musk at a New York Times conference last week, Altman said he felt “tremendously sad” but also characterized Musk’s legal fight as one about business competition. “He’s a competitor and we’re doing well,” Altman said. He also said at the conference that he is “not that worried” about the Tesla CEO’s influence with President-elect Donald Trump. (AP) — Florida State has its quarterback for next season, and the Seminoles are counting on this college journeyman working out better than their previous one. Former Boston College standout Thomas Castellanos officially signed with FSU on Friday. The 5-foot-9 Georgia native started 20 games for the Eagles over the last two seasons, throwing for 3,614 yards and 33 touchdowns. He also ran for 1,307 yards and 15 scores. But he was injured and then benched in a game in early November. Five days later, he announced plans to enter the transfer portal and was not with the team for its final three regular-season games. The Eagles went 2-1 without him. Castellanos replaces DJ Uiagalelei, another two-time transfer who played just five games in 2024 before missing most of the season with a hand injury. The Seminoles (2-10) also started Brock Glenn and freshman Luke Kromenhoek, a former top recruit who reportedly is entering the transfer portal. None of those QBs proved effective as FSU ranked 132nd in total offense out of 134 teams. “Thomas Castellanos is one of the most dynamic playmakers in college football,” Seminoles coach Mike Norvell said . “He will be a great addition with his ability on the field, and he will be a tremendous complement to our roster as we bring this program back to the Florida State standard.” Castellanos spent his freshman season at UCF, where current FSU offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn was the head coach.
