TAIPEI: A Chinese film set during the COVID-19 pandemic won the top prizes in Taiwan's prestigious Golden Horse Awards, which saw the highest number of entries from China in recent years despite political tensions. Beijing banned its entertainers from joining Golden Horse - dubbed the Chinese-language "Oscars" - in 2019 after a Taiwanese director voiced support for the island's independence in an acceptance speech in 2018. China claims Taiwan as part of its territory, which the Taipei government rejects, and Chinese A-listers and big commercial productions have largely avoided the event ever since. Despite the sensitivity of the awards, more than 200 Chinese films entered this year's competition, which Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) said was the highest number in "recent years". Acclaimed Chinese filmmaker Lou Ye was awarded best director late Saturday (Nov 23) night for his docu-drama "An Unfinished Film", which was also named best picture. Lou was absent from the ceremony but his wife Ma Yingli read his acceptance speech, describing the film set during China's lockdown of Wuhan in the earliest stages of the pandemic as "the most special directing job I have ever done". Chinese actor Zhang Zhiyong, who also did not attend the awards, won best actor for his performance in Chinese director Geng Jun's same-sex drama "Bel Ami". Hong Kong's Chung Suet-ying was named best actress for her role in "The Way We Talk", which is about the deaf community. Neither "Bel Ami" nor "An Unfinished Film" has been released in China. Ahead of the awards, MAC spokesman Liang Wen-chieh told reporters that these films "may not be able to be screened in mainland China, but they still hope to have a free platform to participate and express themselves". "WORK OF CONSCIENCE" After several years absence, Chinese stars began trickling back to the awards in Taipei last year, with actress Hu Ling the first to grace the red carpet since the ban. While Geng missed out on best director and best picture, his film "Bel Ami" won the awards for best cinematography and best film editing. "This spirit remains unchanged. A mother who needed 65 units of blood products while giving birth and was told it was “a medical miracle that I’m still here” has met the NHS staff who urgently sent blood to the hospital. Adele Darlington suffered a massive bleed while giving birth to her daughter Jasmine just before Christmas last year. Mrs Darlington, 41, of Stockton Heath in Warrington, needed blood, plasma, cryoprecipitate and platelets during emergency surgery including a hysterectomy to save her life at the end of November 2023. “My husband was told to call in family to prepare to say goodbye, but thanks to everyone’s work I got to spend Christmas with my family and new daughter,” the mother-of-five said during an NHS appeal for Christmas and New Year blood donors. Mrs Darlington, who had placenta previa, a condition where the placenta partly or completely blocks the cervix, started bleeding during a planned C-section and lost 15 litres of blood in total. An average woman’s body contains just under five litres. After a four-hour operation during the C-section, she underwent another nine hours of surgery for a hysterectomy, tube and ovary removal and partial cervix and bladder removal. During surgery, Mrs Darlington received 28 units of red blood cells, 20 units of fresh frozen plasma, nine units of cryoprecipitate, and eight units of platelets – the biggest transfusion at the hospital since 2000. NHS Blood and Transplant’s Liverpool team had to send nine emergency orders overnight to Warrington Hospital for Mrs Darlington and other patients, as a huge team of nurses and doctors, including four surgeons operating at once, worked to save her life. To thank staff and support the Christmas appeal for blood donors, Mrs Darlington visited the regional centre which sent most of the blood for her care. Staff laid out the exact number of units of blood products she received to illustrate how much help she needed. Mrs Darlington said: “It’s been a really humbling experience to meet some of the people who sent blood when I had my transfusion, it’s been a really special day. “It was unbelievable to see the same quantity of blood that I received laid out, knowing that it took so many people to save me. I’m forever indebted to the more than 65 people who gave me the gift of life. “I never thought in a million years that this would happen to me, but trauma and the need for a lot of blood can happen to anyone at any time, including at Christmas, so I would urge anyone who is able to donate to please do so.” Mrs Darlington said she vaguely remember Jasmine being born during the C-section before she passed out. “By this point I’d already lost six litres of blood and it was thought that I’d stabilised, but in the recovery room it become evident that I was still internally bleeding so I was urgently rushed back into theatre,” she said. “They told me I needed a hysterectomy to save my life. “I had this sense of doom that I would not make it. “My blood pressure and heart rate were at dangerous levels. “I remember crying and saying: ‘I think I’m dying’, and telling the theatre staff that I was scared to go to sleep because I didn’t think I would wake up.” Mrs Darlington’s condition was so severe she developed disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), a blood-clotting problem in trauma patients so severe it is sometimes informally referred to as ‘death is coming’. “I was told it’s a medical miracle that I’m still here,” Mrs Darlington said. She added: “I’m still on a road to recovery I am just forever grateful that I am here. I am very aware that I shouldn’t be. “All of these amazing people worked together to save me. “Blood donors might think it’s not a big thing to donate – they donate and they have a hot drink and a biscuit – but I can’t thank them enough. “I will be eternally grateful to these selfless donors who took time to voluntarily donate and ultimately save my life.” Her husband Ian, who owns a media business, has signed up as a blood donor, along with many friends and family members. Julie Riley from NHSBT Liverpool Hospital Services, said: “I was on shift issuing the blood, and meeting Adele was absolutely beautiful. “We don’t normally get to meet anyone – we work in labs for eight hours a day. I am glad she got home for her little kiddies.” Michael Kay, NHSBT blood delivery driver, said: “It was the end of my shift but I stayed on to do a blue-light delivery and it’s just amazing to find out it went to Adele”. When you need some investing ideas, it's always a good idea to consider the moves of people who have proven their expertise. A perfect example is Ray Dalio, a self-made billionaire who got started by investing $300 in a stock at age 12 and tripling his money. Since then, he has had a flourishing career, and in the 1970s, launched Bridgewater Associates. He grew that firm into the world's largest hedge fund, with about $100 billion in assets under management today. Dalio believes in long-term investing -- holding onto stocks for a number of years and benefiting from their growth rather than moving in and out of positions over days or weeks. But he also knows when it's time to lock in profits. He has emphasized the importance of selling stocks when they are fully valued and reallocating those funds into stocks that still have room to run. Historically, Dalio's moves haven't necessarily gone along with the crowd. That was again the case with two of his maneuvers during the third quarter. Bridgewater sold what remained of its stake in cybersecurity leader CrowdStrike ( CRWD 0.22% ) , which Wall Street analysts generally predict will rise in the coming 12 months. At the same time, Bridgewater opened a new position in an S&P 500 artificial intelligence (AI) player that has soared 300% so far this year -- and that Wall Street thinks is headed for a 40% decline. Dalio's firm closed out its position in cybersecurity powerhouse CrowdStrike -- selling 7,140 shares -- after gradually decreasing its stake over the past year. Bridgewater originally bought CrowdStrike in the third quarter of 2022. Since the start of that quarter through the start of this year's third quarter, the stock has climbed about 118%, suggesting the billionaire locked in profits on the investment. Now, let's take a look at the new S&P 500 AI stock Bridgewater bought in the recent third quarter. That's Palantir Technologies ( PLTR 6.22% ) , a company offering AI-powered software to help clients make better use of their data. Bridgewater increased its position by more than 500% to 523,548 shares. This was after it originally bought the stock in the first quarter of 2022. Palantir has proven to be a winning investment so far, heading for a gain of more than 400% since the end of that quarter. From today's price levels, Wall Street's average analyst forecast calls for CrowdStrike to advance by about 2.5% over the coming 12 months -- not a big increase, but positive movement all the same -- and for Palantir to drop by about 40%. Has Dalio made the right move by locking in his profits from CrowdStrike and increasing his bet on Palantir? Pressure on CrowdStrike It's still too early to know for sure. But it's true that CrowdStrike could face some pressure in the months to come. The company's faulty software update in July unleashed the biggest information technology outage ever, and CrowdStrike has said it expects the costs of packages to compensate customers for the losses that caused will weigh on its growth in the coming quarters. It's possible this also will limit the stock's near-term performance, though the company still represents a top long-term investment. As for Palantir, yes, the stock's valuation has skyrocketed -- it trades for 184 times forward earnings estimates right now. But some investors -- including Dalio -- may be willing to accept that since Palantir is in the early stages of its AI growth story. The S&P 500 invited Palantir to join this fall, showing that it has entered the ranks of the companies that drive the modern economy. Palantir's AIP demand Palantir launched its Artificial Intelligence Platform (AIP) a year ago, and demand for it is soaring. The company's commercial customer growth has taken off in recent times, but with only about 300 U.S. commercial customers right now, Palantir still has plenty of room to expand. Finally, forecasts that today's $200 billion AI market is on track to grow to $1 trillion by the end of the decade suggest more growth ahead for today's top AI players. Palantir's recent earnings results support this optimism, with the company reporting its highest profit ever in the third quarter. All of this means that Dalio may have the right idea about investing in this high-flying AI stock today -- even if Wall Street isn't as optimistic about how it will perform in the coming months. It's also important to remember that long-term investing can mean holding onto a stock for five to 10 years or even longer. That means that no matter what happens over the first few months you own an investment, it still could be a winner for you over the long run.

The two men, who were in their 30s, died when their car was in a collision with another car in the village of Liscooley in east Donegal at approximately 10pm last night. The men have been named as friends Ryan Glenn and Gordy Galbraith, the Irish Mirror has reported. A man and a woman, both in their 70s, were rushed to Letterkenny University Hospital. They are currently in a serious condition in the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital. Another woman, in her 30s, is also being treated for non life-threatening injuries. The accident happened on a straight stretch of the N15 road and Gardai are trying to determine what caused the crash. Garda Forensic Collision Investigators arrived at the scene at first light this morning to begin their pain-staking investigation. Local Parish Priest at Crossroads, Killygordon, Fr Patsy Arkinson, attended the scene of the crash late last night. He also said a rosary for those involved in the collision. He described the scene as "shocking," and that locals were "shocked and hurt" following the tragic incident. He also offered his thoughts and prayers to the deceased and injured in the collision. Local Fianna Fail county councillor Patrick McGowan, who lives just minutes from the scene of last night's tragedy, said the entire community was in shock. "I would like to express my condolences to the bereaved families. We cannot imagine the pain they are going through now. The whole community is still in shock today to wake up to the news that two young men have lost their lives. It's just so sad. "But I would also like to wish those injured in the tragedy a speedy recovery. Our thoughts and prayers are with all involved," he said. Head of the Garda Traffic Corps in Co Donegal, Inspector Seamus McGonigle, appealed for anybody who was in the area at the time of the crash to contact Gardai. He said "We would like to contact members of the public who have already been in contact with us in relation to the collision. However, we would appeal to anybody who was driving between Stranorlar and Castlefin from 9.30pm to 10pm and may have witnessed anything to contact Gardai." Here are some things to know about Turner: From professional football to politics Turner grew up in a Dallas suburb, Richardson, and graduated from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. He was a defensive back and spent nine seasons in the NFL beginning in 1995, playing for the Washington Redskins, San Diego Chargers and Denver Broncos. During offseasons, he worked as an intern then-Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif. After Turner retired in 2004, he worked full time for the congressman.
