One can never have enough quality wool or wool blend socks to wear with your boots and they go from $15 to $30 a pair depending upon where you buy them and the brand you buy. If you really want to splurge, Merino wool blend socks are awesome and generally range from $15 to $35. A basic outdoor first aid kit is a necessity for the active person. Stay away from the $5 variety and head for the $15 to $50 range. Even if the person you are shopping for already has one, many of the items in the kit become outdated after a year or two, so it does not hurt to replace them or keep an extra one in the truck. In a few months, anglers will start replacing the line on their reels in anticipation of warmer weather. Anglers are also losing terminal tackle that needs replacing, so check with your angler's fishing buddy to find out what types of flies, lures, hooks and spinners they like before heading to the stores. Ice fishing rods can easily be found from about $20 on up. Of course, you can also buy them terminal tackle, a folding chair to sit in, a plastic sled to haul their gear, hand warmers and other miscellaneous accoutrements. When all else fails, get them a gift card to their favorite fly shop, gun store, or outdoors store. My kids used to get me a gift certificate every year for the amount of a fishing license, so that when my license expired I could purchase a new one courtesy of them. I think it was their way of getting me out of the house on the weekends so they wouldn’t have to do as many chores. But who cares about their motive, I got a new fishing license every year out of the deal. Surface water temperatures have dropped into the 30s and there was still some ice in the back of the coves and the arms east of the highway were mostly ice covered. The dock is out of the water at the State Park boat ramp. With a cooling trend this week, we may start to see some ice formation along shorelines in the main body of the lake. But with daytime highs above freezing there shouldn’t be too much. It is not uncommon for the lake to start forming ice around the first of December, so get out while you can. Fishing continued to be good this past weekend, especially for fly fishermen using balanced leeches and chironomids. Fish in 6 to 12 feet of water with the fly about 4 to six feet below the strike indicator. Wooly buggers and leeches stripped on an intermediate or slow sinking line are also catching a few trout. Worms under bobbers or green or red PowerBait floated off the bottom continue to work for bait anglers. No report on any bass being caught, though few anglers are fishing for them. Blade baits may work in deeper water for bass. For trout small spinners, rooster tails or panther Martins should work for spin fishermen. Small minnow imitations in perch or chub colors may also catch a few trout. Just fish all the hardware slowly. With the colder water fish metabolism is slowing down. Fishing for perch has been slow to fair for numbers, but poor for size with fish averaging 4 to 6 inches as the perch population is still recovering from a 2022 die-off. Worms under bobbers or green or red PowerBait floated off the bottom continue to work for bait anglers. There was some ice in the backwater at the south end of the lake by the causeway. With the cooling trend this week we may start to see some ice formation in the backs of coves and along some of the shorelines. Shore fishing for trout continues to be good. Trout have moved up in the water column as well into shallow waters in search of food. Worms or PowerBait floated off the bottom using a slip sinker or below a bobber in the shallower water was working for those targeting trout. Fly fishing has good using both balanced leeches and chironomids. Balanced leeches in black/red, black/blue, wine or olive were working. Hot green or red bead heads on the balanced leeches seemed to produce more fish. Snow cones, chironocones, zebra midges in black or red, and Yankee buzzers were all catching fish. Wooly buggers sized 6 to 10 and leech patterns sized 10 to 14 in the black/red, black/blue, wine and dark red stripped on a sinking line should also work. Bass fishing is poor. No recent report on catfish or wipers being caught. Approximately 19,000 trout were stocked in mid to late October. Approximately 30,000 trout were stocked the first week of November. No recent reports from anyone fishing it, but expect ice to start forming here with the forecast colder temperatures. Use the same presentations and techniques as at South Fork Reservoir. Approximately 500 9-inch trout were stocked Nov. 8. The water level is good for this time of year and visibility is good. Fishing for bass has been slow and trout fishing has been good. No recent report on anglers fishing here. Like other lakes in the area, expect ice to start forming with the forecast colder temperatures. The same techniques and presentations that work at South Fork work here. With recent and forecast precipitation, expect muddy road conditions on the way out. Approximately 9,800 trout were stocked in late October. At last report, Harrison Pass was open but 4WD was recommended. There was some ice formation at the main boat ramp in the south lake. There may be some ice in places in the collection ditch, but if there it's not enough to impact fishing. Fishing in the collection ditch continues to be good for trout averaging 15 to 20 inches with a quite a few fish over 20 inches. Water clarity is good and water levels continue to be very good though vegetation is still thick in many areas. Fishing for brown and tiger trout is still good in the collection ditch. With colder temperatures and precipitation, it is time to switch to subsurface presentations though blue wing olives, ants and midge dry flies. Fly anglers have had luck stripping wooly buggers, leeches or small streamers in black or olive using short slow strips. Nymphs under an indicator are working best. Patterns to fish include eggs, chironomids, PT nymphs, gold ribbed hares ears and copper Johns. Spin fishermen should be using spinners, Kastmasters, panther Martins and other small lures fished slowly. It is artificial presentations only in the collection ditch, which includes the pond behind the hatchery all the way to Brown Dike. Wading is not allowed the entire length of the collection ditch. Approximately 4,600 rainbow trout and 500 brown trout were stocked in mid-October. No recent report, but anglers may encounter some shore ice starting to form over the next week or two. Aquatic vegetation growth is still making shore fishing difficult, so float tubes or small watercraft are the way to go. This will continue until the ice covers the lake. Fishing continues to be fair to good for 13- to 16-inch trout. Either dark or flashy spinners or small plastic baits fished with varying retrieves should work. Worms or PowerBait fished under a bobber is best for bait anglers. For fly rodders, wooly buggers and leech patterns on a sink tip or intermediate sinking line have been working. The usual assortment of nymph and chironomid patterns are also producing a few fish. Like other reservoirs in the area bass fishing is very slow to poor. Some 1,000 9-inch trout were stocked on Nov. 5. Fishing should be good for rainbow trout and tiger trout in the 9- to 12-inch range. Anglers fishing for trout should use spinners, nightcrawlers, and PowerBait. Fly fishers should use midge patterns, leeches or woolly buggers. Fish the buggers and leeches slowly. Bass fishing is poor with colder water temperatures. There is a limited black bass fishery and anglers are encouraged to catch and release these bass to help improve the bass fishery. Cave Lake is lowered to minimum pool and unfishable. Cave Lake is closed to fishing due to shorelines that are very soft and dangerous due to the complete saturation of the soil. Ice was covering about 90% of Comins Lake last week. The ice thickness varied from one-half to 2 inches, with areas of exposed water. All ice should be considered unsafe. Shore fishing access did improve this past weekend due to warmer daytime highs. If anglers attempt to fish from shoreline, a mix of spinners, nightcrawlers, PowerBait, and a fly behind a bubble should catch fish. Comins received 10,043 rainbow trout this fall averaging 8.9 inches. During northern pike suppression efforts this fall, rainbow trout were observed in the 1.5- to 4-pound range. Please note that NDOW has placed radio tags in several northern pike. These pike will have an orange Floy tag near their dorsal fin and a small antenna (~ 7 inches long) coming from their stomach. Please return these fish to the water for research purposes. Please do not return pike without the tags back to the lake. Black bass fishing is poor. There is a limited bluegill fishery at Comins Lake and anglers are encouraged to release bluegill so that the population can become better established. Illipah Reservoir is sitting at approximately 95% ice covered. The ice thickness varies from one-half to 2 inches, with areas of exposed water. All ice should be considered unsafe. Although warmer temperatures are predicted, it is unclear if the ice at Illipah Reservoir will open. If it does open up, similar baits such as nightcrawlers, PowerBait, and spinners should work. Fly fishermen should use buggers, nymphs and chironomids. Some 9,012 rainbow trout averaging 9.3 inches were stocked this fall. The road to Angel Lake was closed for the winter earlier this week. There will be no fishing reports until May when the road re-opens. Ice has covered the high mountain lakes. Anglers can expect winter conditions in the high country and only experienced back country travelers should visit them. There will be no more reports on these waters until late spring or early summer depending upon snow conditions. With colder temperatures and fish being cold blooded they are moving more slowly so anglers need to slow presentations down and spend more time fishing sections of streams. With recent and forecast snowfall, expect 4WD conditions in Lamoille Canyon. The tail water below South Fork is still producing some trout but flows are very low so fish are holding in the pools. Water conditions below Wild Horse Dam in the East Fork of the Owyhee have dropped significantly and icy wading conditions and snow are keeping many anglers away. The flows on the Jarbidge and Bruneau Rivers are still low, have haven’t changed much and fishing has been slow to fair. Access will soon be through Idaho depending upon the weather, if not already. As of Nov. 25, the East Fork of the Owyhee was flowing at 2.39 cfs below the dam and 20.7 cfs at Mountain City; the Jarbidge River was flowing at 5.47 cfs; the Bruneau River at 20.5 cfs; Salmon Falls Creek at 57.2 cfs; Lamoille Creek at 2.89 cfs; the South Fork of the Humboldt at 5.51 cfs; Cleve Creek at 7.29 cfs; and Steptoe Creek at 4.88 cfs. Calvert admitted to constructing the bomb out of nails, firecrackers and screws, and then blowing it up outside Republican Attorney General Steve Marshall’s office in the early morning hours of Saturday, Feb. 24, prosecutors said. No people were hurt, and nearby buildings in downtown Montgomery were not damaged. Remnants of the bomb were not discovered until the following Monday, according to a statement from the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency. Law enforcement arrested Calvert two weeks later. “Acts of violence like this one against our public institutions endanger public servants and entire communities, and they must not be tolerated,” said U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland. Calvert’s attorneys did not respond to an emailed request for comment on Thursday.
