I’m no stranger to the dangers of social media and gaming culture, or of allowing children too much screen time. My family lived through the nightmare of watching our smart and outgoing son fall prey to an online cult through the messaging platform Discord, which my husband and I had approved as safe. We witnessed our once-happy boy tumble into a world of isolation, anger and despair, ultimately leading him to attempt suicide. Twice. Thankfully, we were able to intervene, and we got him the support he needed. So when the U.S. surgeon general issued a dire warning to Americans that young people are experiencing a mental health crisis driven by social media, he was speaking directly to the horrific experiences of families like ours. Yet when I see schools banning phones and blocking social media and governments limiting the use of technology for young people, I worry those actions may backfire, making them even more enticing to adolescents and teens, who naturally test limits as part of their normal development. Don’t we have an obligation to teach our children how to navigate these spaces safely instead of just limiting their access? Australia just passed sweeping legislation to ban children under age 16 from social media, which would put apps like TikTok and many others off limits. The U.S. House of Representatives, meanwhile, is poised to vote on the Kids Online Safety Act , which passed the Senate by a vote of 91-3 in July. While I support mandating oversight for social media companies, this bill won’t solve the fundamental problems. To address the underlying crisis, we need to teach young people how to use online platforms and digital resources in a way that is healthy and responsible. Joshua Buxbaum June 21, 2024 The Kids Online Safety Act creates a “duty of care” for social media companies, making them responsible for mitigating harms to young users and requiring annual risk assessments . But relying solely on social media and online gaming companies to keep kids safe is a losing proposition. While companies certainly have ethical obligations to protect young users, legislation is a blunt instrument for making nuanced decisions on what content is appropriate for young people. The language of the bill prompted 28 advocacy organizations – including the American Civil Liberties Union, the Electronic Frontier Foundation and LGBT Tech – to sign a Dec. 9 letter to congressional leadership opposing KOSA . Their letter argues that the bill could lead to arbitrarily stifling young people’s access to educational information related to reproductive health, LGBTQ+ content and other topics that are relevant to marginalized youth. Even those of us who support this bill can’t allow it to lessen the urgency of finding other safeguards. Just as car safety standards don’t remove the need for driver’s education, students still need direct instruction on the digital rules of the road. Similarly, families and educators need help building better relationships with the tools their children will continue to use. We have failed to protect our kids from the power of the online world – and we must remedy that. But rather than fixating on bans on users and companies that are unlikely to change kids’ behaviors, we should be asking how we can help young people create healthier relationships with technology that is an inevitable and growing part of their lives. Based on my professional expertise in education technology and my family’s difficult experience, I want to offer practical advice for families and educators to teach healthy technology use and build responsible stewardship of online social media and gaming sites. These are skills that young people need, regardless of government intervention. We should not fall into the trap of making social media content “forbidden fruit” that invites boundary-challenging teenagers to redouble their efforts to consume it. First, we need to recognize that even if they are “digital natives,” young people encounter new things every day, just like the rest of us. Sure, they’ve grown up with smartphones and social media. But when it comes to navigating digital tools like ChatGPT or even spreadsheets, they’re often just as confused as their parents. We have a responsibility to arm them with the skills and resources for safely navigating these spaces and developing the life skills they require. When a child turns 16, we don’t throw them keys to the family car and say, “Have fun!” So why are we putting powerful technology in the hands of kids without teaching them how to safely operate the various platforms? I often use the concept of a “digital media driver’s license” to help parents and educators think about how we can teach kids at home and in classrooms to develop healthy tech habits. Scott Allendevaux July 25, 2024 One activity that’s proven particularly powerful is asking students to download TikTok’s user agreement , copy and paste it into an AI chatbot, and direct the bot to give them the highlights and outline how it uses their personal information. Not only do they learn how to use AI as an effective tool to translate a 70-page user agreement, but they’re also learning just how much personal information the platform takes from them and stores. We’ve heard from educators that when students do this exercise in class, nearly half of them take TikTok off their phones because they’re so upset with the way the app is using their information to sell ads. Digital literacy and digital citizenship education, beginning as early as kindergarten, should teach kids age-appropriate skills to keep themselves safe, to protect their data and identity, and to learn ethics for online engagement. Students have long been taught to cite reliable sources for academic purposes; they need to learn how to extend this skill to content on social media and elsewhere online. As AI grows in prevalence, bringing healthy skepticism to images seen online (looking for telltale signs of manipulation, for example) is vital. Additionally, students need to be able to distinguish credible news from misinformation, and they must build the muscle of cross-referencing facts. That’s only half the equation, though: Young people are not just consumers of online content, they’re also creators. It’s vital that we teach students how to engage online with kindness and respect, and how to express ideas and opinions in constructive, impactful ways. We also need to talk more to kids about how their actions online – particularly cyberbullying – create a ripple effect that has a real impact on people’s lives. In one of the more extreme examples, eighth grade students at a middle school in Pennsylvania created fake TikTok accounts impersonating more than 20 of their teachers, filling them with racist and homophobic memes and innuendo about pedophilia. The actions wreaked havoc on teachers’ lives and resulted in suspensions for the students involved. The worst part: many of the students didn’t seem to understand why what they did was wrong . It’s also important to set clear rules and boundaries – and model them ourselves. In my home, we have “No Tech Sunday” once a month, when no one in our family is allowed to use technology from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. It’s as challenging for me as it is for my kids, but these are also the days in which we are most likely to end up in deep conversations, enjoy board games and get outside for fresh air. The flip side of this is just as important: having dedicated time for technology and social media. During these periods, we should teach our kids what it means to have a digital footprint, how to create and manage their own, and how to grasp the permanence of it. I appreciate the need to limit cellphones in class to keep the focus on instruction, but when students are allowed to use them at recess, during lunch or after school, they rush back to their devices instead of engaging with their peers in person and can even fail to eat lunch. By helping to solve one problem, we created additional ones. And cellphones are only one type of device students use: 96% of teachers say their students use tablets or laptops in the classroom at least once a month. We need to dedicate class time to ensuring students can use these digital tools responsibly and effectively. While the perils of technology are real, we shouldn’t embrace the attitude that technology is inherently bad. But that’s a potential message sent by the KOSA legislation before the U.S. Congress and the bill recently passed in Australia. Instead, each of us needs to teach students how to harness the potential of technology to do good things and to unleash their creativity. Fostering an open communication about the pitfalls as well as the positive impact will help them make smart, informed decisions. As for my family, we count ourselves among the lucky: Our son graduated high school last spring, and he is thriving. We are thankful every day for where he is now. We hope that smart and respectful approaches to educating our children about social media, as opposed to outright bans, will help protect many other families. A 7-year-old rivalry between tech leaders Elon Musk and Sam Altman over who should run OpenAI and prevent an artificial intelligence "dictatorship" is now heading to a federal judge as Musk seeks to halt the ChatGPT maker's ongoing shift into a for-profit company. Musk, an early OpenAI investor and board member, sued the artificial intelligence company earlier this year alleging it had betrayed its founding aims as a nonprofit research lab benefiting the public good rather than pursuing profits. Musk has since escalated the dispute, adding new claims and asking for a court order that would stop OpenAI’s plans to convert itself into a for-profit business more fully. The world's richest man, whose companies include Tesla, SpaceX and social media platform X, last year started his own rival AI company, xAI. Musk says it faces unfair competition from OpenAI and its close business partner Microsoft, which has supplied the huge computing resources needed to build AI systems such as ChatGPT. “OpenAI and Microsoft together exploiting Musk’s donations so they can build a for-profit monopoly, one now specifically targeting xAI, is just too much,” says Musk's filing that alleges the companies are violating the terms of Musk’s foundational contributions to the charity. OpenAI is filing a response Friday opposing Musk’s requested order, saying it would cripple OpenAI’s business and mission to the advantage of Musk and his own AI company. A hearing is set for January before U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers in Oakland. At the heart of the dispute is a 2017 internal power struggle at the fledgling startup that led to Altman becoming OpenAI's CEO. Musk also sought to be CEO and in an email outlined a plan where he would “unequivocally have initial control of the company” but said that would be temporary. He grew frustrated after two other OpenAI co-founders said he would hold too much power as a major shareholder and chief executive if the startup succeeded in its goal to achieve better-than-human AI known as artificial general intelligence , or AGI. Musk has long voiced concerns about how advanced forms of AI could threaten humanity. “The current structure provides you with a path where you end up with unilateral absolute control over the AGI," said a 2017 email to Musk from co-founders Ilya Sutskever and Greg Brockman. “You stated that you don't want to control the final AGI, but during this negotiation, you've shown to us that absolute control is extremely important to you.” In the same email, titled “Honest Thoughts,” Sutskever and Brockman also voiced concerns about Altman's desire to be CEO and whether he was motivated by “political goals.” Altman eventually succeeded in becoming CEO, and has remained so except for a period last year when he was fired and then reinstated days later after the board that ousted him was replaced. OpenAI published the messages Friday in a blog post meant to show its side of the story, particularly Musk's early support for the idea of making OpenAI a for-profit business so it could raise money for the hardware and computer power that AI needs. It was Musk, through his wealth manager Jared Birchall, who first registered “Open Artificial Technologies Technologies, Inc.”, a public benefit corporation, in September 2017. Then came the “Honest Thoughts” email that Musk described as the “final straw.” “Either go do something on your own or continue with OpenAI as a nonprofit,” Musk wrote back. OpenAI said Musk later proposed merging the startup into Tesla before resigning as the co-chair of OpenAI's board in early 2018. Musk didn't immediately respond to emailed requests for comment sent to his companies Friday. Asked about his frayed relationship with Musk at a New York Times conference last week, Altman said he felt “tremendously sad” but also characterized Musk’s legal fight as one about business competition. “He’s a competitor and we’re doing well,” Altman said. He also said at the conference that he is “not that worried” about the Tesla CEO’s influence with President-elect Donald Trump. OpenAI said Friday that Altman plans to make a $1 million personal donation to Trump’s inauguration fund, joining a number of tech companies and executives who are working to improve their relationships with the incoming administration. —————————— The Associated Press and OpenAI have a licensing and technology agreement allowing OpenAI access to part of the AP’s text archives.Ever wanted to bring your dog with you aboard a cruise ship? Do you have a business focused on dogs and their families? If you answered yes to either question, you’ll be excited to learn that what’s being called the first-ever dog-friendly cruise is being planned aboard Margaritaville at Sea’s Islander out of the Port of Tampa in November 2025. And business opportunities await. Cruise ships famously don’t allow dogs other than service animals. Organizers of this cruise anticipate selecting from a long line of hopefuls. A “waitlist for all dog parents who have dreamt of bringing their furry friends along for their vacations will open soon,” a news release says. Organizers are calling for 250 dogs, “their owners and their closest humans” to become “inaugural ambassadors” for the cruise, which they promise will offer “unique experiences and activities including gifts and samples from top vendors, dog shows and trainings, guest speakers, costume contests, parades, and more.” The event is being staged by two organizations — Cruise Tails and Expedia Cruises of West Orlando. The website cruisetails.com seeks sponsors and investors in hopes of turning the cruise into a recurring event. Sponsorship and partnership opportunities are available for companies seeking brand visibility “across a passionate pet-loving audience,” the site says. And participants must sign photo waivers, the website says, adding, “We anticipate the fun will be all over social media and even in the press. In fact, the 250 chosen will undoubtedly be asked by sponsors to try products and post about them.” Cruise Tails was formed by Steve Matzke, a Bradenton-based entrepreneur listed on LinkedIn as beginning his career this month as an “independent consultant.” Matzke spent four years prior to that as senior director of external relations for the American Accounting Association, and 12 years before that as director of faculty and university initiatives for the American Institute of CPAs, his LinkedIn profile shows. Expedia Cruises of West Orlando was founded in 2019 by Dawn von Graff, an avid traveler who has taken more than 75 cruises and visited more than 80 countries, and her husband. She owned a computer networking firm, worked as an international tour manager, and was a top salesperson for Marriott before forming Expedia Cruises of West Orlando as a full-service travel agency. Details including dates, prices and itineraries have not yet been released. According to the website, organizers hope to select the inaugural 250 dogs based partly on how the dogs perform in a “video talent singing contest” as well as “a variety of criteria” to be announced “over the next few weeks.” The bigger the dog’s entourage, the better chance it will have to be chosen, the website says. “Preference will be given to dogs in a group which includes one dog cabin traveling with two or more associated cabins of friends or family without dogs,” it says. A spokeswoman for Margaritaville at Sea says the organizers are chartering the Islander, and the cruise will not be available for booking to the general public. Each dog will have “private relief stations” on their cabin balconies, and when dogs don’t make it to the relief station, each will have its own “pet butler” to ensure “their cabin and the boat remain in top condition,” a Cruise Tails spokeswoman said. Participants must agree to follow protocols on board, including keeping their dogs in permitted areas and making sure they are up to date with appropriate vaccinations. Dogs will not be allowed in dining areas, the ship’s casino, pool decks, lounges or music venues, according to the news release. Organizers will also be looking for workers and vendors. “We’re going to need dog walkers, pet butlers, and so much more,” the website says. And “if you have a proven skill like pet massage, grooming and pet walking or if you make custom dog costumes, have a unique dog product you would like to promote or are a well-known dog expert, we would love to chat with you.” Calls for pet handlers and vendors will be posted “in the next few months,” the site says. Whether the event turns into the profitable industry that its organizers hope for will undoubtedly depend on how the first one unfolds. A spokeswoman did not immediately have answers to such questions of what will happen to dogs that get aggressive with humans or other dogs? Will owners be required to purchase additional insurance to cover any possibilities? Will food be provided and how will feedings be handled? Contributors on Reddit.com posted mixed reactions to the announcement on Monday. “Cruises are already floating petri dishes. This doesn’t seem like a very good idea,” said one. “Now all decks are poop decks,” said another. A couple of posters worried about dogs going overboard. One said, “sounds awesome if you like dogs,” while another chimed in, “Better than a gorilla-friendly cruise, I suppose.” Ron Hurtibise covers business and consumer issues for the South Florida Sun Sentinel. My fiance and I purchase these strips and saw immediate and significant differences in the color of both of our smiles. There were so many strips provided in this packet that both of us were able to use these to the point that we were both happy with our results and still had more left over to continue to use for maintenance in the future. So even though it might feel expensive, this pack could last the two of us for at least a year. [...]” — AAndC (This review has been edited for length. Read the full review here .) “ I absolutely LOVE this product! I was reluctant to try them for so long in fear of them not working so great. Boy, was I wrong! I noticed how white my niece’s teeth were looking. I asked her what she was doing, because I honestly thought she was having her teeth professionally whitened by a dentist. To my surprise, she told me she was using Crest White Strips. So, I finally bought them and used the strips right away! I noticed a visible difference after one use. As a smoker, my teeth were looking yellow and I was self conscious about my smile. I couldn’t believe the difference just one use made. Now, after using them for a few weeks, my teeth are significantly whiter and brighter!! I am completely shocked and ecstatic with my results!! I smile bigger and wider these days and have won my confidence back again!!! Woo-hoo!!” — Maria G. “I got these bc my teeth were super stained from coffee and tea, and I was very self conscious of it, but literally after using just the 1 hour express ones that it comes with (it comes with 2 of them) I used one today and one 2 days ago, my teeth are GLOWING they aren’t yellow anymore and they are actually white for once, I was skeptical at first but these actually work Scarily well, they do make my teeth a little more sensitive right after using and that slowly fades over the next few hours.” — Donnie “My bottom teeth are pretty crowded, and gnarly. I have a 4 tooth upper bridge where my front 2 teeth had been knocked out on a fall when I was 7. I wasn’t sure if these whitening strips would work on my teeth. I am on day 5 of using the using the strips, and I can tell already that my permanent teeth are lightening up! They look better now, than after a cleaning at my dentist! I have to kind of tuck the strips onto my bottom teeth, bc they are so crowded, but they work! I haven’t noticed any teeth sensitivity yet, buy my gums are a tad irritated from the strips. Nothing so troublesome that I would discontinue using them. I’m very happy with this purchase.” — MaRyan R. Related From Our Partner

A man jailed after intimidating his former partner with a knife and punching her and throwing her to the ground has been released after an appeal. or signup to continue reading Jaleel Barker had been in an on and off relationship with the victim, which she ended in January last year. The victim was out with her friends in Albury on February 4 last year when Barker walked past and called her pathetic. The woman left at the end of the night and asked to go back to Barker's unit to get some of her property. She let herself in and Barker returned about 15 minutes later. He asked "where's my baby?" and went into his kitchen and grabbed a knife. He approached the victim while armed and pointed the weapon at her while a short distance from her face. "I just want to grab my stuff and leave," she said. "If you leave, I will kill you," Barker replied. He dropped the knife and grabbed the woman by her hair and pulled her downwards, punching her twice. Barker threw her to the ground. The punches caused pain, redness, swelling, and a bruise. Barker smashed the woman's iPhone. He had blamed the woman for triggering him but said he didn't remember the offending due to his intoxication. The 23-year-old was jailed for a minimum of 15 months by Judge Sean Grant, which Barker appealed. Three Supreme Court justices on Friday, December 6, allowed the appeal, and noted issues with the original sentencing. Barker was placed on an intensive corrections order, served in the community, instead of full time custody. The order started on Friday and will run for 14 months, allowing his release. The judges noted that while the offending was serious it was "not the most serious offences of domestic violence". The court heard his rehabilitation was "still a work in progress" and he had, concerningly, justified his actions against the victim and blamed her for his offending. IRVING, Texas (AP) — The NFL will consider expanding replay assist to include facemask penalties and other plays. Officials have missed several obvious facemask penalties this season, including two in a three-week span during Thursday night games. “When we see it, because I see it like yourselves and the fans, I have an opportunity to see it from a different angle and see it from a slow-mo,” NFL executive Troy Vincent said Wednesday at the league’s winter meetings. “When you think about the position of where the officials are, things are happening so fast. Sometimes the facemask can be the same color as the gloves. There’s a lot happening. Concerning? Yes, because that’s a big miss. That’s a big foul. That’s why we would like to consider putting that for the membership to consider putting that foul category that we can see, putting that (penalty flag) on the field to help. There is a frustration, and we believe that is one category we can potentially get right." Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold was grabbed by his facemask and brought down in the end zone to end Minnesota’s comeback attempt against the Rams on Oct. 24. But there was no call. On Oct. 3, officials missed a facemask on Buccaneers running back Bucky Irving while he ran for 7 yards late in the fourth quarter. Tampa Bay instead was called for holding on the play, got forced out of field-goal range and Kirk Cousins rallied the Falcons to an overtime victory. “That is one this year, the facemask seems like it was the obvious one” Vincent said. “That keeps showing up.” Vincent also cited hits on a defenseless player, tripping, the fair catch, an illegal batted ball, an illegal double-team block, illegal formations on kickoffs and taunting as other areas that warrant consideration for replay assist. Current rules only allow replay assist to help officials pick up a flag incorrectly thrown on the field, or in assisting proper enforcement of a foul called on the field. The NFL’s Competition Committee will review potential recommendations for owners to vote on for expanding replay assist. Vincent was emphatic about the league’s desire to eliminate low blocks that could lead to serious injuries. “The low block below the knee needs to be removed from the game,” Vincent said. “You look at high school, you look at college, too. Every block should be above the knee, but below the neck. All the work that we’ve done for the head and neck area, all the things that we’ve taken out of the game, this is the right time for us to remove the low block out of the game. Be consistent with high school. Be consistent with college. Every block should be above the knee and below the neck.” The league will consider changes to the onside kick after dramatically overhauling the kickoff rule on a one-year basis. “We need to look at that. That’s a dead play,” Vincent said of the onside kick’s low success rate. “That is a ceremonial play. Very low recovery rate. When we look at the kickoff and maybe where the touchback area should be during the offseason, we need to revisit the onside kick.” Options include giving the team an opportunity to run one play to gain a certain number of yards to keep possession. The Washington Commanders’ search for a new stadium site includes options in Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia, and work has escalated on one in particular. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and controlling owner Josh Harris met with lawmakers on Capitol Hill last week about the RFK Stadium site in Washington, which requires a bill getting through Congress to transfer the land to the District government before anything else can happen. “I think there’s a bipartisan support for this,” Goodell said, adding he’d like to see it get to a vote soon. “We hope that it will be addressed and approved so that it’s at least an alternative for the Commanders if we go forward. I grew up in Washington, and I know would be exciting for a lot of fans.” The NFL continues to discuss a potential 18-game season, but would need approval from the players’ union. “We are doing analysis I would say, but we are not finalizing any plans at this point,” Goodell said. “They’ll share that analysis with the players’ union, which would need to agree to any change.” AP Sports Writer Stephen Whyno contributed. A 7-year-old dispute between tech leaders Elon Musk and Sam Altman over who should run OpenAI and prevent an artificial intelligence "dictatorship" is now heading to a federal judge as Musk seeks to halt the ChatGPT maker's ongoing shift into a for-profit company. Musk also wanted the job, according to emails revealed as part of the court case, but grew frustrated after two other OpenAI co-founders said he would hold too much power as a major shareholder and chief executive if the startup succeeded in its goal to achieve better-than-human AI known as artificial general intelligence , or AGI. —————————— The Associated Press and OpenAI have a licensing and technology agreement allowing OpenAI access to part of the AP’s text archives.
