NEW YORK — U.S. stock indexes are drifting lower Tuesday in the runup to the highlight of the week for the market, the latest update on inflation that’s coming on Wednesday. The S&P 500 dipped by 0.2% in late trading, a day after pulling back from its latest all-time high. The index is on track for its first back-to-back losses in more than three weeks, as momentum slows following a big rally that has it on track for one of its best years of the millennium. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down by 7 points, or less than 0.1%, with roughly an hour remaining in trading, and the Nasdaq composite fell 0.3%. Tech titan Oracle dragged on the market and sank 7.8% after reporting growth for the latest quarter that fell just short of analysts’ expectations. It was one of the heaviest weights on the S&P 500, even though CEO Safra Catz said the company saw record demand related to artificial-intelligence technology for its cloud infrastructure business, which trains generative AI models. AI has been a big source of growth that’s helped many companies’ stock prices skyrocket. Oracle’s stock had already leaped nearly 81% for the year coming into Tuesday, which raised the bar of expectations for its profit report. In the bond market, Treasury yields ticked higher ahead of Wednesday’s report on the inflation that U.S. consumers are feeling. Economists expect it to show roughly similar increases as the month before. That and a report on Thursday about inflation at the wholesale level will be the final big pieces of data the Federal Reserve will get before its meeting next week, where many investors expect the year’s third cut to interest rates. The Fed has been easing its main interest rate from a two-decade high since September to lift the slowing jobs market, after bringing inflation nearly down to its 2% target. Lower rates would help give support to the economy, but they could also provide more fuel for inflation. Get local news delivered to your inbox!
Former Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney says Canada didn't live up to its values on immigration over the last few years as it allowed more people into the country than it could absorb. Carney, who is currently a special adviser to the Liberal party, made those comments during an event in Ottawa held by Cardus, a Christian think tank. Carney says Canada let newcomers down by admitting more workers and students than it could provide for, including with housing, health care and social services. Earlier this fall, the Liberal government announced a plan to significantly reduced its immigration target for permanent residents and to dramatically scale back the number of temporary residents in Canada. Those changes came about after a period of strong population growth that led to mounting criticism of the Liberal government's immigration policies. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has acknowledged that the federal government did not get the balance right on immigration after the COVID-19 pandemic. Just a day after revealing its Holiday 2024 lookbook , Palace has served up a look at each and every piece from the collection. As is par for the course regarding the brand’s cold-weather offerings, technical materials from GORE-TEX to Polartec are abundant, as are bold, playful logo-adorned garments that offer a compelling juxtaposition between cold-weather style and warm-weather flair. Of course, collaborations get in the mix as well. Palace has worked with its fellow Londoners at The Great Frog for an extensive offering of apparel, accessories and jewelry, while both Kangol and New Era contribute to the line’s headwear range as well. Take a look at the full collection below, and expect its first drop to touch down in Europe and the US both online and in-store at 11 AM local time Friday, November 29. Japan and Korea will receive the drop a day later on Saturday, November 30 at 11 AM local time, and the China release will also go down via WeChat at 11 AM local time on November 30. Jackets Any holiday range worth its salt needs a compelling outwear offering, and Palace Holiday 2024 has something for everyone. Pretty much every technology in the GORE-TEX book, from the brand’s signature waterproof membrane to other weather and wind-resistant technologies like GORE-TEX Infinium and GORE-TEX Windstopper make an appearance. If you’re on the hunt for something slightly less technical, there’s also a fully reversible fur-lined bomber, faux sherpa jackets, work jackets with embroidered hits and even a bespoke leather jacket created in collaboration with The Great Frog. Sweatshirts A wide range of sweatshirts and crewnecks are included in the offering, including rock-and-roll inspired designs created with The Great Frog and plenty of Polartec-equipped pieces. Tri-fergs and glitter embellishments make an appearance, and Palace’s unique sense of humor is on display with the fleeces as well, thanks to the return of its “Palaska” logo and a humorous crewneck with a stylized horse that looks as if it could be ranch merchandise. Knitwear and Shirts The knitwear and shirt offering is one of the season’s strongest sets. A skull-and-bones knit seen in the collection preview is presented in two colors, and there’s a fun logo flip that salutes a beloved pasta brand on a football-inspired sweater. Outside that, lined flannel shirts offer a warm and hardy option, while both sturdy overshirts and peppy rugbys take a step into the technical world with Palace’s clever use of Polartec fleece. Longsleeves and Tees Though we may be headed for the year’s coldest days, that hasn’t stopped Palace from offering a variety of bold tees. More collabs with The Great Frog can be seen here, as can a logo application that seems more summer than winter, but most notable of all is likely the “Not Today Satan” shirt that swaps out both of the As in Lucifer’s moniker for Palace’s famed tri-ferg logo, a devilishly good follow-up to the memorable “Jesus Saves” tee from the brand’s Spring 2021 collection. Bottoms The collection’s offering of bottoms give you a chance to complete your roadman look with several fleece options that match some of the more technical tops (there are also matching pants for the faux sherpa jackets for the ultimate cozy boys). Standing out the most, however, is a pair of loose-fit jeans in both a light and dark watch that feature a deceiving warped pattern on the right leg and a embroidered logo hit on the left leg. Hats Hoods, sheistys, beanies and caps aplenty are on display across the collection. For wearers who want to cover their face in full, there’s warm puffer hoods and hats, while those who are looking for something lighter can choose between sleek Polartec beanies or playful, shaggy “bear ear” hats. There are also hats made in collaboration with Kangol and New Era, as well as classic P logo strapbacks and a fully-reversible fur trooper hat. Accessories and Hardware The accessories are where Palace’s collaboration with The Great Frog really hits home, thanks to a set of silver rings and an accompanying pendant. Jewelry is not the only ornamentation in Palace Holiday 2024 either, as the brand has crafted a variety of tree ornaments that include a 3D Tri-Ferg logo, a bow-toting cherub and even a mini puffer jacket. There’s also a puffer jacket for dogs, a jump rope made in collaboration with Everlast and a good deal of small Blackwatch plaid card carrying options accompanied by a matching belt. Editor’s Note: Though bags and hardware are typically stand-alone categories on this list, they’ve both been rolled into the “Accessories” gallery here as this season’s offerings were particularly concice.Brazil shares lower at close of trade; Bovespa down 1.50%
EL SEGUNDO — Running back J.K. Dobbins suffered a sprained knee during the Chargers’ loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Monday night and is likely to be sidelined for Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Falcons. Coach Jim Harbaugh said Wednesday he “didn’t really know how to categorize” the injury, however. “He’s working through something with his knee,” Harbaugh added. The NFL Network, citing an unnamed source, said Dobbins would be out this week. Dobbins gained 40 yards on six carries before he was sidelined in the second quarter of the Chargers’ 30-23 loss on Monday. The Chargers turned to Gus Edwards and Hassan Haskins in Dobbins’ absence in the second half, but relied almost exclusively on their passing game after trailing 14-13 at halftime. The Chargers (7-4) rushed only five times in the second half. Overall, Edwards had nine carries for 11 yards and one touchdown and Haskins had one carry for 3 yards. Quarterback Justin Herbert rushed four times for 29 yards and one touchdown, a 5-yard scramble on the Chargers’ first drive of the game. Edwards’ 1-yard touchdown run came on their final possession. “Gus is heating up,” Harbaugh said. “Great to have him back in there.” Edwards has rushed for 206 yards and one touchdown on 63 carries in seven games, spending four games on injured reserve because of an ankle injury. Harbaugh was uncertain whether Dobbins’ injury would force him onto the injured reserve list and a minimum of a four-game layoff. “Don’t know that yet,” Harbaugh said of the possibility of Dobbins going on IR. Haskins has rushed for 26 yards and one touchdown on 13 carries, primarily playing an impactful role on special teams. Rookie Kimani Vidal, another possible replacement for Dobbins, has rushed for 44 yards on 18 carries and caught three passes for 49 yards and one touchdown. Dobbins has rushed for a team-leading 766 yards (fourth in the AFC) and eight touchdowns on 156 carries. He and Edwards signed with the Chargers in the offseason as free agents after starting their careers with the Ravens. Dobbins, 25, has had an injury-plagued career, but hasn’t missed a game so far this season. His 2023 season ended early after he sustained a torn Achilles tendon in the Ravens’ season opener. Herbert is the Chargers’ second-leading rusher with 211 yards and two touchdowns on 45 carries, most coming on scrambles away from on-rushing defenders. He set a career-high with a 38-yard scramble in the first quarter of the Chargers’ 26-8 victory over the New Orleans Saints on Oct. 27. Cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. hasn’t played since the Chargers’ loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 3, placed on injured reserve because of a shoulder injury. Harbaugh declined to speculate whether Samuel would be sidelined for the remainder of the season, referring questions to Samuel. Samuel isn’t required to speak to reporters while on IR. So, his extended absence has been something of a mystery. However, his absence has opened the door for rookies Cam Hart and Tarheeb Still to move into the starting lineup. Hart is sidelined by an ankle injury that required him to wear a protective boot while watching Monday’s game from the sideline. Still has been a reliable fill-in with 33 tackles and one interception. “No, I don’t expect him back this week,” Harbaugh said of Samuel. Related Articles In somewhat related moves, the Chargers placed cornerback Eli Apple on injured reserve because of a hamstring injury suffered against the Ravens. They also claimed safety Marcus Maye off of waivers. Maye played 11 games this season with the Miami Dolphins, who cut him earlier this week. Maye started three games and had 30 tackles overall for the Dolphins. Wide receiver DJ Chark Jr. started the season on injured reserve, but he hasn’t cracked the lineup consistently after recovering from a hip injury. Chark was active for only one game this season, the Chargers’ Nov. 10 victory over the Tennessee Titans , and he was on the field for only one snap. “The opportunity is there, the opportunity is there,” Harbaugh said of Chark, a seven-year NFL veteran. “I really like what I see. Every week, there’s an opportunity. Opportunities are guaranteed, and DJ has the license and opportunity to take advantage of that opportunity.”
