New tools like Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) have been developed to fill the gap as antivirus grew unable to stop newer forms of cyberattacks like malware. But even traditional EDR has its weaknesses -- most notably that it only registers threats once they have penetrated your system. Your organization needs a zero trust endpoint security solution that stops threats before they execute in your environment. From antivirus to endpoint detection and response The development of EDR tools was the next step in cyber resiliency after antivirus began falling behind in its ability to stop malware. The struggle began when the rate at which new malware was created and distributed far outweighed the rate at which they could be logged and prevented from causing harm. The most logical step to take was to develop a cybersecurity tool that could identify malware by actions taken, not just by code. Cybersecurity experts are continuously working to improve EDR tools to better detect and respond to threats faster and more accurately, introducing strategies including, but not limited to: Artificial intelligence (AI): The recent boom of AI has helped cybersecurity tools identify malware more frequently and with fewer false positives or negatives. This means that malware could cause immense damage before traditional EDR tools notice and act, if they notice at all, and that the best they can do is reduce the amount of damage incurred. Detection tools are not the future of endpoint security The next step in cyber resilience is "zero trust" controls that enforce the least privilege across applications, user access, data access, and network traffic. Take, for example, application blocklisting versus application allowlisting. Blocklisting aligns with antivirus strategies in that it makes a list of what is known to be bad, blocks everything on that list from running, and allows everything else. With application allowlisting, you create a list of the applications and software you trust and need and block everything else from running. Allowlisting is a zero trust method of application control that prevents known and unknown threats from running on your devices, preventing cyberattacks, like ransomware, from detonating. The attack began when the threat actor breached the hospital's site with stolen domain admin credentials purchased on the dark web and entered the network through the corporate VPN. At the time, the hospital did not have two-factor authentication enabled for VPN connections into the network due to a lack of budget. Upon accessing the network, the ransomware gang attempted to install and run AnyDesk, a remote desktop application, which was immediately denied and blocked by default due to ThreatLocker application allowlisting. Understanding that they would not be able to run any malware in the environment, the threat actors moved laterally to attack the second hospital on the same network that was not protected by ThreatLocker. ARK Technology Consultants, the hospital's Managed Service Provider (MSP) and a ThreatLocker partner, discovered that there was an attempted cyberattack when they identified that someone had tried to clear event logs. ARK was able to observe the threat actor's attempted activities via the ThreatLocker allowlisting and Storage Control modules' event logs recorded in the unified audit. The ransomware gang left behind a note claiming to have stolen terabytes of data from the first hospital, but the unified audit, with event logs from the Storage Control module, said otherwise. In reality, ThreatLocker Storage Control had blocked them from being able to read, write, or move the critical data, leaving the gang unable to steal anything of importance from the first hospital. In the end, despite the ransomware gang having stolen domain admin credentials and VPN access to the hospital's network, they could not carry out their cyberattack because ThreatLocker's application allowlisting blocked AnyDesk from running and prevented the attack from exfiltrating or altering the files in the database with Storage Control. Zero trust endpoint protection for the future A full security strategy calls for a detection tool like EDR and antivirus so that all bases are covered. These tools act as your last line of defense against cyber threats. But traditional EDR and other detection tools can no longer be relied on as a complete security strategy. HALIFAX — A day after Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston led the Progressive Conservatives to a massive majority win, the Liberals were licking their wounds and wondering why their party was almost wiped off the political map. On Wednesday morning, once all the ballots were counted, the incumbent Tories had secured 43 of the 55 seats in the legislature, an increase of nine. The NDP won nine seats, an increase of three, and the Liberals fell to only two seats, a dozen less than when the campaign started. One Independent candidate held her seat — a first for the province. Liberal Leader Zach Churchill, a 40-year-old former cabinet minister, lost his seat after a long, see-saw battle with his Tory rival in the riding of Yarmouth — Churchill's hometown on Nova Scotia's southwestern shore. The Liberals had to give up their role as official opposition and the party barely held on to official party status. "At the end of the day, this falls on my shoulders," Churchill said afterwards. "This loss belongs to me and me alone." But it would be wrong to blame Churchill for his party's collapse at the polls, says Tom Urbaniak, a political science professor at Cape Breton University in Sydney, N.S. "Zach Churchill was dealing with a damaged Liberal brand — damaged in large part by the current standing of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau," Urbaniak said in an interview Wednesday, adding that Houston took advantage of that weakness. "(Churchill) was portrayed as Justin Trudeau's junior protege. And that stuck with some Nova Scotians." Throughout the campaign, Houston and his Tory colleagues tried to link Trudeau — whose Liberals are trailing the federal Tories by about 20 points in the polls — with Churchill, a well-spoken career politician who was elected to lead the provincial party in July 2022. "We know Zach Churchill defends his federal cousins at every turn,” provincial Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister Kent Smith said in a statement early in the campaign. “Once again, when Zach Churchill had the choice to stand up for Nova Scotians or stand with Justin Trudeau, he chose Trudeau.” Churchill was also hobbled by a relatively low provincial profile, Urbaniak said. Despite the fact that he had held the riding of Yarmouth for the past 14 years and served in the cabinet of former Liberal premier Stephen McNeil, Churchill failed to leave much of an impression on the electorate, he said. Part of the problem was that McNeil, who served as premier from 2013 to 2021, rarely let his ministers spend much time in the limelight. "Stephen McNeil, at times, ran a one-person government," the professor said. "The premier made the big decisions .... That came back to hurt Zach Churchill." As well, Houston's decision to call an early election also stung the Liberals and the NDP, both of which were still nominating candidates when the campaign started. On another front, the Liberals in southwestern Nova Scotia were hurt by the fact that residents in several fishing communities had long complained about what they said was the federal Liberal government's failure to stop the illegal fishing of lobsters and baby eels. "The perceived federal mismanagement was a factor in some ridings," Urbaniak said, pointing to the Acadian riding of Clare, which had been held by the Liberals for the past 31 years. Liberal candidate Ronnie LeBlanc, a local fisherman, lost the riding to rookie Tory candidate Ryan Robicheau on Tuesday night by more than 1,000 votes. During the campaign, Churchill promised to establish an inquiry into illegal fishing, but voters on the South Shore were unimpressed. The Tories won all nine ridings in the region. It was Churchill's first election as leader. On Tuesday night, he declined to say if he would stay in the role. Neither Churchill nor Houston were available for an interview Wednesday. As for the NDP, party leader Claudia Chender said she was looking forward to taking on the large Tory majority. "I think what we take away from being the official Opposition is that people are looking for a strong voice and they are looking for a different voice,” said Chender, a 48-year-old lawyer. It was also her first election as leader. She said her priorities include pushing for more protection for renters, and reducing the number of people still seeking a doctor. The three additional seats won by the NDP are all in the Halifax area, part of the party’s traditional power base. WASHINGTON — Millions of Americans with obesity would be eligible to have popular weight-loss drugs like Wegovy or Zepbound covered by Medicare or Medicaid under a new rule the Biden administration proposed Tuesday morning. The costly proposal from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services immediately sets the stage for a showdown between the powerful pharmaceutical industry and Robert F. Kennedy Jr., an outspoken opponent of the weight-loss drugs who, as President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee to lead the agency, could block the measure. While the rule would give millions of people access to weekly injectables that have helped people shed pounds so quickly that some have labeled them miracle drugs, it would cost taxpayers as much as $35 billion over the next decade. “It’s a good day for anyone who suffers from obesity,” U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra told The Associated Press in an interview. “It’s a game changer for Americans who can’t afford these drugs otherwise.” The rule would not be finalized until January, days after Trump takes office. A bipartisan coalition of congressional members has lobbied for the drugs to be covered by Medicare, saying it could save the government from spending billions of dollars on treating chronic ailments that stem from obesity. While it’s unclear where Trump himself stands on coverage of the weight-loss drugs, his allies and Cabinet picks who have vowed to cut government spending could balk at the upfront price tag. Under the proposal, only those who are considered obese – someone who has a body mass index of 30 or higher – would qualify for coverage. Some people may already get coverage of the drugs through Medicare or Medicaid, if they have diabetes or are at risk for stroke or heart disease. Becerra estimated that an additional 3.5 million people on Medicare and 4 million on Medicaid could qualify for coverage of the drugs. But research suggests far more people might qualify, with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services estimating roughly 28 million people on Medicaid are considered obese. Medicare has been barred from offering the drugs under a decades-old law that prohibits the government-backed insurance program from covering weight-loss products. The rule proposed by the Biden administration, however, would recognize obesity as a disease that can be treated with the help of the drugs. The anti-obesity drug market has expanded significantly in recent years, with the Food and Drug Administration approvingb a new class of weekly injectables like Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy and Eli Lilly’s Zepbound to treat obesity. People can lose as much as 15% to 25% of their body weight on the drugs, which imitate the hormones that regulate appetites by communicating fullness between the gut and brain when people eat. The cost of the drugs has largely limited them to the wealthy, including celebrities who boast of their benefits. A monthly supply of Wegovy rings up at $1,300 and Zepbound will put you out $1,000. Shortages of the drugs have also limited the supplies. Kennedy, who as Trump’s nominee for HHS secretary is subject to Senate confirmation, has railed against the drugs’ popularity. In speeches and on social media, he’s said the U.S. should not cover the drugs through Medicaid or Medicare. Instead, he supports a broad expansion of coverage for healthier foods and gym memberships. “For half the price of Ozempic, we could purchase regeneratively raised, organic food for every American, three meals a day and a gym membership, for every obese American,” Kennedy said to a group of federal lawmakers during a roundtable earlier this year.
