How long ring fingers can point to a love of alcohol November 26, 2024 Swansea University There is evidence that alcohol consumption is influenced by prenatal sex steroids so experts decided to use a sample of students for their research into the subject. Facebook Twitter Pinterest LinkedIN Email The length of your fingers may hold a vital clue to your drinking habits, according to a new study. There is evidence that alcohol consumption is influenced by prenatal sex steroids so experts from Swansea University and colleagues from the Medical University of Lodz decided to use a sample of students for their research into the subject. Their findings have just been published by the online journal American Journal of Human Biology. They found relationships between high alcohol consumption and long 4 th digits relative to 2 nd digits. This showed that high prenatal testosterone relative to oestrogen is linked to high student alcohol consumption. Professor John Manning, of Swansea's Applied Sports, Technology, Exercise and Medicine (A-STEM) research team, said: "Alcohol consumption is a major social and economic problem. Therefore, it is important to understand why alcohol use shows considerable differences across individuals." The study used a sample of 258 participants -- 169 of them female -- and it revealed consumption rates varied between the sexes. In comparison to women, men show higher alcohol consumption and higher mortality from alcohol abuse. He said: "A pattern like this suggests an involvement of sex hormones, such as testosterone and oestrogen. Digit ratio (2D:4D: the relative lengths of the 2 nd [index] and 4 th [ring] fingers) is thought to be an index of early testosterone (long 4 th digit) and oestrogen (long 2 nd digit). "It is known that alcohol-dependent patients have very long 4 th digits relative to their 2 nd digits, suggesting high testosterone relative to estrogen exposure before birth. As expected, the associations were stronger for men than women." Now the researchers hope their conclusions will bring a better understanding of the factors underlying the pattern of alcohol consumption, from abstinence to occasional use to harmful dependence. This is the latest paper which has highlighted Professor Manning's work in the field of digit ratios. Previous research has examined how digit ratio may provide vital information concerning outcomes after contracting Covid-19, as well as oxygen consumption in footballers. WASHINGTON (AP) – A powerful government panel yesterday failed to reach consensus on the possible national security risks of a nearly USD15 billion proposed deal for Nippon Steel of Japan to purchase United States (US) Steel, leaving the decision to President Joe Biden, who opposes the deal. The Committee on Foreign Investment in the US, known as CFIUS, sent its long-awaited report on the merger to Biden, who formally came out against the deal in March. He has 15 days to reach a final decision, the White House said. A US official familiar with the matter, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss the private report, said some federal agencies represented on the panel were skeptical that allowing a Japanese company to buy an American-owned steelmaker would create national security risks. Yesterday was the deadline to approve the deal, recommend that Biden block it or extend the review process. Both Biden and President-elect Donald Trump have courted unionised workers at US Steel and vowed to block the acquisition amid concerns about foreign ownership of a flagship American company. The economic risk, however, is giving up Nippon Steel’s potential investments in the mills and upgrades that might help preserve steel production within the US. Under the terms of the proposed USD14.9 billion all-cash deal, US Steel would keep its name and its headquarters in Pittsburgh, where it was founded in 1901 by JP Morgan and Andrew Carnegie. It would become a subsidiary of Nippon Steel, and the combined company would be among the top three steelmakers in the world, according to 2023 figures from the World Steel Association. Biden, backed by the United Steelworkers, said earlier this year that it was “vital for (US Steel) to remain an American steel company that is domestically owned and operated.” Trump has also opposed the acquisition and vowed earlier this month on his Truth Social platform to “block this deal from happening.” He proposed reviving US Steel’s flagging fortunes “through a series of Tax Incentives and Tariffs.” The steelworkers union questions if Nippon Steel would keep jobs at unionised plants, make good on collectively bargained benefits or protect American steel production from cheap foreign imports. “Our union has been calling for strict government scrutiny of the sale since it was announced. Now it’s up to President Biden to determine the best path forward,” the steelworkers’ president David McCall said in a statement. “We continue to believe that means keeping US Steel domestically owned and operated.” Nippon Steel and US Steel have waged a public relations campaign to win over skeptics. US Steel said in a statement that the deal “is the best way, by far, to ensure that US Steel, including its employees, communities, and customers, will thrive well into the future”. Nippon Steel said yesterday that it had been informed by CFIUS that it had referred the case to Biden, and urged him to “reflect on the great lengths that we have gone to address any national security concerns that have been raised and the significant commitments we have made to grow US Steel, protect American jobs, and strengthen the entire American steel industry, which will enhance American national security.” “We are confident that our transaction should and will be approved if it is fairly evaluated on its merits,” it said in a statement. A growing number of conservatives have publicly backed the deal, as Nippon Steel began to win over some steelworkers union members and officials in areas near its blast furnaces in Pennsylvania and Indiana. Many backers said Nippon Steel has a stronger financial balance sheet than rival Cleveland-Cliffs to invest the necessary cash to upgrade ageing US Steel blast furnaces.
